It's a Special Guest episode featuring the Middle Brother; MK_Dudley_Art! In this episode we tackle the fun of CyberPunk 2077 and the possibility of an Electric Boogaloo. We ponder on the late 90's dark romance of HOME FRIES and ask if ALIEN: ROMULUS is killing the franchise (“Is he full of milk”?). We take a look at NOSFERATU and hear the most MKD statement EVER. We look into the occult with I SAW THE TV GLOW, LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL, and IMMACULATE.
Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes joins us to talk about the evolution of humor in his songwriting, why he's transparent with his fans, and maybe the most Bob Dylan of Bob Dylan stories we've ever heard. PART ONE:Paul and Scott address the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area, and encourage people to help make a difference by considering a donation through one of four organizations: Fire Aid (fireaidla.org)The Red Cross (redcross.org)MusiCares (musicares.org)World Central Kitchen (wck.org) PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Taylor Goldsmith of DawesABOUT TAYLOR GOLDSMITH:Taylor Goldsmith is best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter for the folk-influenced rock band Dawes. The group, which also includes Taylor's brother, Griffin, has released nine full-length studio albums, six of which have hit the Top 5 on Billboard's Americana/Folk Albums chart, and four of which have hit the Top 10 on Billboard's rock chart. In addition to his work with Dawes, he has been a member of the band Middle Brother with Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit and John McCauley of Deer Tick. Taylor also contributed to T Bone Burnett's New Basement Tapes project—which completed unfinished Bob Dylan songs—alongside Marcus Mumford, Jim James, Rhiannon Giddens, and Elvis Costello. As a songwriter outside the band, Taylor has collaborated with The Killers, Conor Oberst, Brandon Flowers, Robert Ellis, Demi Lovato, and his wife Mandy Moore. The most recent Dawes album, released in October of 2024, is called Oh Brother. Sadly, not long after our conversation, both Taylor and his brother Griffin became victims of the massive Southern California wildfires that devastated portions of the Los Angeles area and severely damaged or destroyed their homes.
It's a real $h1t $h0vv this week as the boys power their way through some technical difficulties in the last half of the ride that may be a little distracting to the unfamiliar listener. Anyway, the music is good at least. Included: Beach Boys; the Felice Brothers; Yes; Pete Townsend; Middle Brother; Nathaniel Rateliff; Jethro Tull; Marianne Faithful; Jesse Welles; John Hiatt; Miley Cyrus
My guest on this episode is John McCauley from the band Deer Tick, as well as side projects Middle Brother and Diamond Rugs. In our conversation, John shares some amazing stories about his early days as a musician growing up in Providence, what the process was like for him touring during that time, and how seeing DIY shows in Olneyville as a teenager influenced his stage performance to this day. We also cover the writing and recording process of many of his records included Deer Tick's latest album, "Emotional Contracts" which is out now via ATO records. Interlude song order: "Dirty Dishes" by Deer Tick from their Daytrotter Session "Goodbye, Dear Friend" by Deer Tick from their album, Black Dirt Sessions "Main Street" by Deer Tick from their album, Divine Providence "Out on My Own" by Diamond Rugs from their self-titled album "Ashamed" by Deer Tick from their live performance at Newport Blues Cafe on Jul 28, 2019 (audio credit: Chad) "Once in a Lifetime" by Deer Tick from their album, Emotional Contracts // Interview recorded March 11, 2024 at John's home // Intro music by Cedros // Hosted by James Toomey //

On a dark and stormy night...we got to talk to one of our favorite musicians. Matthew Logan Vasquez of Delta Spirit (who we just saw live in LA), Middle Brother, solo projects, and countless other creations, joins us to laugh at literally everything from his Twainian youth to twat-ass geese, dreaming of Lauryn Hill and fighting a horse-sized duck with two-buck chuck.
Taylor Goldsmith joins Rhett from his home in Pasadena, CA to discuss the making of Dawes' new album and the challenges of pushing himself and the band artistically to create something new. Taylor explains why he doesn't adhere to the ‘rules' of the music business when it comes to songwriting, how he pushes through negativity, and shares the insight he would give to his 21-year old self. Taylor Goldsmith is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer. He is the frontman for the band Dawes, which he formed with his younger brother in 2009. Taylor has also been involved in several side projects over the years, including Middle Brother (2010) and New Basement Tapes (2014), and performed as a session artist for singers including Jackson Browne, John Fogerty and more. “Misadventures of Doomscroller”, the new album from Dawes, will be released this month. And, don't miss Rhett's new single "Follow You Home". Wheels Off is brought to you by Osiris Media. Hosted and produced by Rhett Miller. Co-produced by Kirsten Cluthe in partnership with Nick Ruffini (Revoice Media). Editing by Matt Dwyer. This episode features Matthew Logan Vasquez. Best known as the frontman/crooner of Delta Spirit, he shatters the axiom “there aren't enough hours in the day” by employing his talents in other groups: Middle Brother, Glorietta and his solo project, MLV. This week we get transported to a remote New Mexico mountain town at the very moment, in a naked nathaniel rateliff hot tub-soaked jam session, an unlikely singer-songwriter super group was born. In 12 songs, Glorietta captures rocking, heartbreaking and introspective songs recorded by pals of Matthew Logan Vasquez (Delta Spirit, Middle Brother) at a ramshackle rental outside Santa Fe over five days. That's next, on The Radio Cure!

9:50 - I head to the United States and find a country deeply divided, struggling with sexual norms and deep seeded racism. Autumn Storm recently transitioned from male to female at 19 years of age. I felt in a way she represented what America as a whole is going through. She also helped foreshadow the turbulent weather I would soon experience on my journey. 20:42 - No trip to Portland could be complete without a visit to Powell’s Books. At a live author talk Germany-based author Nell Zink comments on the difference between the “old world” and the “new world” and skewers the American treatment of its most vulnerable. 29:28 - I get heavy into the black metal experience, playing a monster-filled boardgame called Munchkin and listening to vinyl of extreme Norwegian music. We use the genre as a jumping off point to discussions about politics, podcasting, wave perspectives — and a different type of sacrifice. “I sacrificed everything I knew and loved to go be an uncle and finish college in Indiana.” 50:04 - I happen upon a Black Lives Matter protest over a new police contract organizers claim would prevent effective oversight of body camera footage and encourage bad officer behaviour. I stand face to face with riot gear-clad police, just feet away from protesters who got pepper-sprayed. Music remixed from a pepper-spray promotional video. 1:25:10 - A stop at a sidestreet coffee shop got me connected to a scenario where I was lucky enough to get an Ableton Live lesson from downtempo producer Jesse Jade (@jesse-atrapasuenos) and hear new music from Hakuu (@hakuu). Big thank you to Keenan Branch for passing along a bunch of high quality tracks, which I used as background music for a number of the segments during the episode. Music from: CloZee (@clozee), Rene LaVice (@renelavice), Washed Out (@Washed_Out), Middle Brother (@middle-brother-official), Thievery Corporation (@thieverycorporation).
Hear Costello perform with several special guests, including Glen Hansard and Middle Brother.

A supergroup featuring the leaders of three largely likeminded bands — Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith, Deer Tick's John McCauley and Delta Spirit's Matthew Vasquez — Middle Brother naturally takes on many incarnations: moodily brooding folk-pop, boozily spirited rock, spotlight-sharing roots music. Altogether, it adds up to roughly the sum of its parts. Hear the band perform live as part of a SXSW showcase at Auditorium Shores in Austin, Texas, on March 19, 2011.
