While their debut album tagged them as Dinosaur Jr Jr thanks to loud guitars and J. Mascis behind the board, Buffalo Tom's second album, Birdbrain, builds on the raw, guitar-driven sound of their debut but with more mature songwriting and production. Produced again by J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. with Sean Slade, the album emphasizes emotional intensity over polish, with songs like "Birdbrain" and "Enemy" showcase the band's knack for combining distorted guitars with introspective lyrics. Though not a commercial hit, the album helped solidify Buffalo Tom's place in the early '90s indie rock scene and shows a significant step in the band's evolution toward the more refined sound of their later work. It's our fifth year of getting the patrons together and giving thanks for the new music that gave us happiness and good vibes in 2024. I love reviewing films that have been on my list for ages but haven't watched yet. This was such a great film that I took me way too long watch. Over the past few years this has become a theme, so much that I made (and will add to) another list on Letterboxd about films I was obsessed with on a late viewing. This has now joined the ranks of that list. Gas Food Lodging, directed by Allison Anders is a great drama and coming of age film set in the Southwest. The performances by Fairuza Balk and Ione Skye need to be studied and talked about more. I get into the INCREDIBLE fashion that stemmed from the late 80s, why J. Mascis is great at composing a movie score, and how I loved the end of this story.Off-topic rants include: fashion and music categorization and why you can think of me as the clerk behind the video rental counter ---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Emerging from the same mid-90s Chicago scene that saw bands like Veruca Salt, Loud Lucy, Menthol, Triple Fast Action, and Local H get signed to major labels, Fig Dish delivered alternative guitar rock that paid homage to the legends of Mt. Rockmore - Zander, Mascis, Mould, and Westerberg - under the Polygram Records (and subsidiaries) banner. Their discovery is the stuff of legend: the band sent demo cassettes to various major labels with a handwritten note from “Steve,” claiming to have found a band worth checking out, banking on the idea that everyone knows a Steve and the label would think it was a genuine tip. Despite their immediately catchy songs that could easily fit into any alternative rock radio playlist, the band (Blake Smith - vocals/guitar, Rick Ness - vocals/guitar, Mike Willison - bass, Andy Hamilton - drums) struggled to grasp the elusive brass ring. Their single “Seeds” was released with a video but saw limited play on MTV's 120 Minutes. Touring across the country, they opened for acts like Juliana Hatfield, Veruca Salt, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Owsley, and Walt Mink. However, their 1995 album, That's What Love Songs Often Do, produced by Lou Giordano, failed to make a significant impact. Their 1997 follow-up, When Shove Goes Back to Push, recorded under challenging circumstances, also ended up in used CD bins despite featuring some of the catchiest rock tunes of the year. In a last-ditch effort, the band filmed a video for “When Shirts Get Tight” featuring adult film stars in humorous, over-the-top scenarios. The video, too risqué for MTV, became more myth than reality. By 1998, Fig Dish's tenure with Polygram ended unceremoniously. They recorded new songs at Andy Gerber's Million Yen studio in Chicago, hoping for a second chance that never materialized. Smith and Willison went on to form Caviar (known for “Tangerine Speedo”), while Ness and Bill Swartz (who played drums on Shove) formed Ness. Recently, Forge Again Records from Chicago reached out to the band to release their two albums on vinyl for the first time. While the band agreed, navigating the bureaucratic red tape with record labels has been time-consuming. In the meantime, Forge Again asked if Fig Dish had any unreleased material, leading to the release of their 1998 demos as Feels Like the Very Second Time on vinyl. In this interview, Smith and Ness reveal there was no dramatic story behind the band's breakup; the members remain friends and stay in touch. While they won't be quitting their day jobs to relive their (less than) glory days, there's a strong possibility that Fig Dish will release new material in the near future. Plenty of guitar-oriented bands rose to prominence in the 1990s thanks to wave after wave of new artists from various genres. The Seattle sound, pop punk, Britpop, etc. all offered a diverse array of sounds for six-string fans. It was like the 1980s era of guitar heroes, but with an emphasis on diversity of tone and style - the melodic mayhem of J. Mascis to the angular buzzsaw of Kim Thayil to the jazzy funk of John Frusciante - all finding the balance between creative tangents and serving the songs. That brings us to Big Hate, an Atlanta via New York band that utilize a fuzz pedal to its maximum potential. From the opener "Century," that features a lazy slide adding just the right amount of dissonance, to the riffing "Writer's Block," the band takes full advantage of their twin guitar attack. But while it shines musically, the band leaves a bit to be desired vocally, from not nailing a truly hooky chorus, to often sliding into early Our Lady Peace / Raine Maida territory. Once again the music gods have bestowed so much great new tracks that the monthly new release show must be expanded into two episodes. That is a great sign for 2024, and especially so because not only is there quality and quantity, but there’s a great mix of classic artists and brand new acts. There’s 18 year old Owen Adamcik’s plan for a new EP every month this year. There are Ledge “friends” such as Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin’s monthly single and a new tune by local legends Thought Patrol. There’s the return of veterans The Smoggers and Rubber City Rebels. Plus surprisingly great new tracks by the liks of J. Mascis, Green Day, and Superchunk. And to kick things off is a late submission for last year’s “52 weeks of Teenage Kicks” series. Two weeks ago Thee Volatiles, “thee best punk rock band in all of Montclair NJ!” sent me their version, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! In fact, I will always accept new covers of the tune. So if you were considering it last year, please go ahead and do it and I’ll guarantee to open my next show with it! For setlists and other info, […]

Kyle Thomas is recording artist "KING TUFF", also known for being a member of the band "WITCH" and for his original freak folk project "FEATHERS". Jaymee feels Kyle's most recent album "SMALLTOWN STARDUST" (Sub Pop) is a masterpiece, a deeply spiritual album that isn't sneaking in religious messages or mantras; it's a call to return to the magic and simplicity of art creation, nature and friendship. Jaymee and Kyle become fast friends in this episode, which is rank with laughter, amazing album recommendations, fun stories about his friendships with Josh Tillman (Father John Misty), J. Mascis, Devendra Banhart, Tim Heidecker, and what it was like recently being joined onstage by their hero Ringo Starr. Fresh off releasing "Two Songs I Wrote in 1993 & Recorded Last Week," legendary Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee joins me for episode 93 (pure numerological coincidence!) to reflect on key moments of musical discovery -- seeing Nirvana play at Big Day Out, starring in a school musical called Uncle Moishe and his Mitzvah Men, recording fucked-up sounding songs on his Tascam 244, hoping to emulate Appetite for Destruction but coming up with something even cooler, figuring out how to get his demo to a record label, and more recent insights about longevity and staying true to your unique vision. He also discusses his songwriting practice today, prioritizing playfulness, supporting young artists, and more. Ben and his wife, Ione Skye, host an awesome weekly podcast called Weirder Together, and their Weirder Together podcast network presents shows hosted by J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and Jello Biafra, among others. Ben will be on tour in September. Get tickets here.

We're back to this century for this months episode as we talk about our favourite songs from 2011, ranging from indiepop to black metal, with various arguments about The Muppets along the way. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Battles, Beastie Boys, Bon Iver, Anna Calvi, Childish Gambino, Death Cab For Cutie, The Deer Tracks, Dir En Grey, Fleet Foxes, The Go! Team, King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, Kvelertak, Lanterns On The Lake, Limp Bizkit, Liturgy, Low, J Mascis, Mogwai, Thurston Moore, Opeth, Amanda Palmer, Josh T. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Completando 30 anos em 2023, Where You Been é o quinto álbum do Dinosaur Jr., e o segundo por uma grande gravadora.
Baxie talks to Lou Barlow from Dinosaur Jr! Lou talks about his Western Massachusetts roots as well as the early days of Dinosaur Jr. Bax and Lous also talk about reuniting with J. Mascis, forming Sebadoh, and scoring a hit with Folk Implosion in 1995 ("Natural One"). Really interesting stuff! Listen on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, and on the Rock102 website!
This week we talk about a four-transistor fuzz circuit called the Big Muff and the main different variations of the circuit, we recreate J. Mascis's tone from the Dinosaur Jr. hit "Start Choppin'", and we talk about basic rules of the road when it comes to putting your effects in order.

Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis is rock 'n' roll's loudest low talker. Onstage, the reserved frontman is overshadowed by his three full stacks, summoning up President Teddy Roosevelt's quote: “speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.” Fellow volume-dealing stalwarts Emmett Jefferson Murphy III (drums)—better known as “Murph”—and Lou Barlow (bass/vocals) helped J form the band in 1984 after their first group, Deep Wound, dissolved. Both left Dinosaur Jr., and then rejoined in 2005. This core group has released eight studio albums of dynamically rich rock that teeters between a runaway locomotive fueled on feedback and buzzing riffs, and hooky, melodic, pop-soaked nimble rhythms that carry more than they crush. While never reaching the mainstream stratosphere like some of their contemporaries (including Nirvana, who opened for Dino Jr. in 1991), this consummate power trio have remained popular in the American underground by continually selling out theaters, splashing into the Billboard 200 (climbing even higher in the Independent and Rock charts), and headlining alternative-music festivals. All along the way, their soft-spoken shredder has ascended as a guitar-hero among musical outcasts. Before Dinosaur Jr.'s sold-out show at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl, Mascis reconnected with PG's Chris Kies to talk Teles (yes, you read that right; he's touring with more Telecasters than ever), including the development of his new signature T that's based on his studio-perfect '58 model. We also witness two firsts for J: a Phantom-Tele-Jazzmaster Frankenstein and a Floyd Rose-equipped guitar. Dinosaur Jr. is an American rock band formed in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1984, originally simply called Dinosaur until legal issues forced a change in name. The band was founded by J Mascis (guitar, vocals, primary songwriter), Lou Barlow (bass, vocals), and Murph (drums). After three albums on independent labels, the band earned a reputation as one of the formative influences on American alternative rock. Mascis's drawling vocals and distinct guitar sound, hearkening back to 1960s and 1970s classic rock and characterized by extensive use of feedback and distortion, were highly influential in the alternative rock movement of the 1990s. Lineup: Wipers, The Dream Syndicate, True West, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Birthday Party, Throbbing Gristle, Venom, Accept, Saint Vitus, The Eastern Dark, The Neats, Green On Red, Meat Puppets

“The finest rock songwriter after Dylan.” “The best electric guitarist since Hendrix.” Who is this man? A man who packed more than a lifetime of experiences into his late teens and twenties? None other than international and longtime beloved music legend Richard Thompson. The master of British folk music joined us with an intimate look at the early years of his career, encapsulated in his memoir Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice 1967-1975. In this conversation with Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis, Thompson took us on a moving journey through the pivotal years of 1967 to 1975, when he formed the band Fairport Convention with some schoolmates and helped establish the genre of British folk rock. The journey then took us through a heady period of massive tours, where he crossed paths with the likes of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix. But while there were some high highs, there were undoubtedly some low lows. The eight-year period was also marked by change, upheaval, and tragedy. Join us for a conversation that vividly captures the life of a remarkable artist during a period of creative intensity, in a world on the cusp of change. Richard Thompson‘s widely beloved early work within the band Fairport Convention revived British folk traditions, and his duet albums and performances with Linda Thompson are legendary. His songs have been covered by Elvis Costello, David Byrne, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, and REM, among others. He continues to write and perform, and to tour widely. He lives in New Jersey. J Mascis is a musician, producer, and film composer, best known as the frontman of the influential indie rock trio Dinosaur Jr. He started as a founding member of the hardcore band Deep Wound, until co-founding Dinosaur Jr. in 1984. In 1991, Dinosaur Jr. disbanded and Mascis released More Light, his first recording under the moniker J Mascis + The Fog. He often plays with other bands in addition to performing solo, and has been heavily involved behind the scenes producing and mixing records for highly regarded acts. Our Chief Toilet Radio Correspondent Ian sits down for a spell with Fear Factory mastermind Dino Cazares! Dino talks about his new record, how the band locked into a singular groove to create Damanufacture, and an incredible story about how the entire band formed from listening to the drum-and-guitar syncopation on Metallica's "One". As a bonus for the gear heads, Ian presses Dino on EXACTLY how he gets his signature guitar tone. BUT FIRST, me and Breno are talking about our favorite memories of Fear Factory as edgy boi youths in the 90s and early 2000s. Topics include: Mortal Kombat, Saw, Carmageddon, KK Downing and Dave Ellefson, Wacken, and the eternal presence of J. Mascis. It's a good one. “Reason To Live” Well, if your looking for the kings of the indie rock grand slam, it's a short list. But Lou Barlow is on it. The Ohio-born Barlow has Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, the folk Implosion and his solo career on his CV and that's only a partial list that doesn't include Sentridoh and Deep Wound. Yes, Lou Barlow has been a major part of major bands that were all groundbreaking and game changers in terms of sound, recording approach and aesthetic. He's been on legendary labels like SST, Homestead , Sub Pop, Merge and Domino and he's one of the most recognizable and adored indie rock dudes of all time. So yes, Barlow is a founding member of three groundbreaking indie rock outfits and his solo career has yielded several remarkable albums, including his fabulous new one Reason To Live. A songwriter of startling depth, introspection and pinpoint emotional accuracy, Lou Barlow is, to put it simply, one of the best we've got. Over the course of his career, he's collaborated with Mike Watt, Stephen Merritt, Dale Crover of the Melvins and Belgian musician Rudy Trouve' He's both vulnerable and brave his work redolent with intimacy, observational wisdom and longing. Reason To Live might very well be his best work yet. Managing to be both layered and spare, this album is filled with breezy acoustic numbers, rolling pop jangles and textured indie rock that's catchy, memorable and moving. In this conversation Lou talks to Alex about eating dinner with strangers, walking the financial tightrope, writing again with John Davis of The Folk Implosion and why it was so hard to ask J. Mascis for a drumbeat….
Our guest on the show this week is J Mascis. Along with Lou Barlow and drummer Murph, he formed Dinosaur Jr in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1984. After their original run, which ended acrimoniously in 1989, Mascis continued on with Dinosaur Jr, the Fog, and plenty of other wiggy and interesting side projects. But in 2005, the original Dino Jr. lineup returned with a genuine comeback classic, Beyond. Since then, they’ve reliably put out a great album every couple of years. Plenty of bands come back in some diminished form, but not these guys. Their latest is Sweep It Into Space, produced by previous Transmissions guest Kurt Vile and Mascis. It’s full of incredible riffs and trademark melodic resignation. It was great to have J on to discuss it, along with his solo albums, early SST days, playing with heroes like Ron Asheton of the Stooges, and more. Listen for a special appearance by J’s dog, Candy.

As our nation remains as bitterly divided as ever, and this year of despair and madness draws to a close, we look to a few sacred things that we can all agree on, no matter what side of politics (or reality) we reside. In the world of rock n roll, nothing is as reliable as the prevalence of an epic beard on the faces of our favorite rock stars. All the greats have had them from time to time, but only a select few can trace at least some portion of their rock star status to that furry thing on their chin. An epic beard is something to behold, and who better to help us celebrate this than the man who also possesses a beard of some epic-ness himself. ATTT is delighted to welcome back our fuzzy friend Dustin Prince to help count down the most iconic, the most striking, the most epic of all beards in music. Buffalo Tom were (and remain) one of the most critically-acclaimed bands of the last 30 years. Starting out in Boston in the late 80s under the tutelage of J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Buffalo Tom really hit their stride in the early 90s with hallmark albums like 92's Let Me Come Over and 93's Big Red Letter Day featuring classic tracks like "Taillights Fade" and "Soda Jerk". Unfortunately, despite appearing on the TV show My So-Called Life, racking up a devout following and attracting a host of famous fans, they never quite crossed over. Frontman Bill Janovitz spends the first part of this conversation discussing why that is and what the arc of the band has been. His deep education on rock history contextualizes that arc in unique ways. But, then we start debating the current state of rock music criticism, the enduring mystique of Exile on Main St. (he wrote a book on the subject) and even the Red Sox. It's a little bit of everything! Oh, and they have a new album coming out in a few weeks - Quiet and Peace. Check it out! http://www.buffalotom.com/ http://billjanovitz.com/blog/

A seminal power-trio of early-to-mid 90's alternative-rock, Buffalo Tom are fresh off the funding of a brand new album via PledgeMusic, and plotting tour dates this year around the upcoming 25th anniversary reissue of their influential third album, Let Me Come Over. Today, singer/guitarist Bill Janovitz discusses the feeling of having his music on vinyl for the first time, discovering tons of classic 45's that were left behind by his neighbors, the eclectic sounds of 70's AM radio, the democratic nature of Buffalo Tom choosing their album art and earning some cool points with his daughter for getting a song dedication from Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard. FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP21. King Tuff. 07.27.12An artist worth their salt won’t stop creating their art, even if it only challenges a slight preconceived notion of who they may be, or what they’re able to do.Our hero, Kevin Thomas’s, story begins in Battleboro, VT where meets a like-minded artist in the record store he works at. Kurt Weisman, and Thomas would collaborate on some songs and then seemingly by magic the two would start what indie rock critics label as a cult-like folk ensemble, by the name Feathers. While gigging with Feathers Kevin, would attract the attention of Sub Pop legend, and Dinasour JR front man J. Mascis (Maskis). Mascis had the idea to lay off the guitar and sit behind a drum set, in the band Witch. A band Mascis had started with longtime friend and bass player Dave Sweetapple. The sound was an early 70’s version of heavy metal with Kevin on lead guitar and vocals.A marriage of these two sounds would birth King Tuff: A persona taken on by Thomas when recording an album in his house. Even if it didn’t catch on right away word of mouth helped distribute this recording, and grow Thomas’s popularity in the deep-deep underground, indie music scene. While working with his new project, Happy Birthday, Thomas says that people started asking about King Tuff. The word of mouth and popularity had grown so exponentially that the decision to go back to his old band seemed almost subconscious. Although not much of a stretch from Happy Birthday, four years later Kevin has created his second album with King Tuff. This self-titled effort was released on Sub Pop Records. Does the distribution come with help from former band mate Mascis? If not then I like to think that his Bob Dylan/ Mic Jagger vocal baby of a voice got him the record contract. This is King Tuff.Tracks Heard In This Podcast: Feathers – Come Around Witch – Seer King Tuff – Sun Medallion Happy Birthday – Subliminal Message King Tuff – Keep On Moving
