Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes joins us to talk about the evolution of humor in his songwriting, why he's transparent with his fans, and maybe the most Bob Dylan of Bob Dylan stories we've ever heard. PART ONE:Paul and Scott address the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area, and encourage people to help make a difference by considering a donation through one of four organizations: Fire Aid (fireaidla.org)The Red Cross (redcross.org)MusiCares (musicares.org)World Central Kitchen (wck.org) PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Taylor Goldsmith of DawesABOUT TAYLOR GOLDSMITH:Taylor Goldsmith is best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter for the folk-influenced rock band Dawes. The group, which also includes Taylor's brother, Griffin, has released nine full-length studio albums, six of which have hit the Top 5 on Billboard's Americana/Folk Albums chart, and four of which have hit the Top 10 on Billboard's rock chart. In addition to his work with Dawes, he has been a member of the band Middle Brother with Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit and John McCauley of Deer Tick. Taylor also contributed to T Bone Burnett's New Basement Tapes project—which completed unfinished Bob Dylan songs—alongside Marcus Mumford, Jim James, Rhiannon Giddens, and Elvis Costello. As a songwriter outside the band, Taylor has collaborated with The Killers, Conor Oberst, Brandon Flowers, Robert Ellis, Demi Lovato, and his wife Mandy Moore. The most recent Dawes album, released in October of 2024, is called Oh Brother. Sadly, not long after our conversation, both Taylor and his brother Griffin became victims of the massive Southern California wildfires that devastated portions of the Los Angeles area and severely damaged or destroyed their homes.

Rex and Craig are on the case, from Luke Combs' "Fast Car" cover and performance at the Grammy Awards Show with songwriter Tracy Chapman; to our review of this year's Super Bowl halftime show starring Usher and friends; to our inquiring why some people get so triggered by Taylor Swift to Houston Astros pitchers and catchers reporting. Also, Craig has a couple of Tik Tok stories. Errata: Not really an error, but the quote from the Whatever Podcast is, "It's very convenient that women waited until after one of the most deadly and brutal wars to secure their right to vote." The vampire's name in "Nosferatu" (1922) was Graf Orlok, played by Max Schreck. The film starring Willem Defoe was "Shadow of the Vampire," not "Kiss of the Vampire." Craig replaced "Possum Kingdom" with Delta Spirit's "How 'Bout It." It's not made clear, but Nicky Minaj settled with Tracy Chapman. The "Mark" in Devo is Mark Mothersbaugh. Clergy and performing artists have a lot in common. How is liturgy like a concert? A staff meeting like a band rehearsal? All leaders, and all Christians, can learn so much from artists, good art, and artistic discipline about God's world, God's work, and life in Christ. Today I'm joined by the Rev. Jonathan Jameson, also known as Jon Jameson of the indie rock band Delta Spirit. We talk about his own giftings in the arts and ministry and how they've been mutually illuminating. We talk about about discipleship on the concert circuit, the importance of geeking out and loving what you love, steps to discerning vocation, and how Björk accidentally ended up in a conversation about sin and grace with Arvo Pärt. Jonathan is associate rector at St. John's Episcopal Church Savannah, Ga. Until becoming a priest he was a full-time professional musician. Jonathan and his wife Amy, a fashion designer, recently moved from Montreal, and have two young children. Delta Spirit is the Americana-influenced indie band he's been part of for 17 years, along with four other musicians. They've toured with My Morning Jacket, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cold War Kids, and The Shins. Turn up your Fender Frontman -- maybe even to 11. Get those headphones on tight. We hope you enjoy the conversation. Watch Björk with Arvo Pärt Visit Delta Spirit's website Give to the Living Church --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/living-church/support

Jim Ruland ("Forest of Fortune," "Do What You Want: The Story of Bad Religion") joins us this week to discuss his wonderful new book "Corporate Rock Sucks: The Rise and Fall of SST Records" (available at your local indie bookstore or at bookshop.org). Black Flag, Hüsker Dü, The Minutemen, Sonic Youth, Screaming Trees and so many more influential bands called SST home from its founding in the very early 1980's into the '90s. Ruland's thoroughly researched and very accessible book chronicles these bands and SST's, well ... rise and fall.  Also this week, we look at the MLB standings as baseball crosses the Memorial Day threshold. We also talked about this video and this one. Check It Out!Andrew: Stephen Sanchez, "Until I Found You"Rex: Traitors Gate, "Devil Takes the High Road" reissueCraig: Delta Spirit's new album "One Is One," released May 20. The band released the album's first single, "What's Done is Done" (NSFW) on March 21, World Down Syndrome Day.Errata: It's a safety pin, not a clothes pin. Ruland was correct - as we recorded the episode was being recorded, the Dodgers and Yankees were tied for MLB's best record. For some reason, Craig kept mispronouncing  Hüsker Dü, as though it was a Nebraska band. It was Mark McGuire, not Albert Pujols. We really should have asked Andrew about Cindy. Talk of water restrictions in the Austin area has begun as drought conditions worsen. Anticipating future wildfires, the construction of an emergency evacuation road for Steiner Ranch is nearing the completion of its design stage. The big "Cyber Rodeo" grand opening event at the Tesla Gigafactory is today, watch for potential traffic snarls nearby - the event starts at 4 this afternoon. It's not just you, the rent is ridiculous for just about everybody as the area sees a 34% single-year jump in one bedroom rental rates. And it's also not just you sneezing as oak pollen saw a huge spike across Central Texas yesterday due to windy conditions - hackberry pollen came in very high on Wednesday as well. A continuing surge in accidental opioid overdose deaths across Texas is being attributed to the steadily increasing presence of fentanyl in street drugs. Local business leaders are rallying behind proposed federal legislation that would incentivize domestic microchip manufacturing, which would positively impact Austin's growing chip production base. Bob Bowlsby, commissioner of the Big 12 Conference, announces an early retirement brought on in part by the chaos that has resulted from the departure of UT and OU. Weekend entertainment includes the MotoGP Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas motorcycle races at Circuit of the Americas Friday thru Sunday. Live music for the weekend sees Friday shows with Charli XCX at ACL Live, and Mount Westmore with Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Too Short and E-40 at Round Rock Amp. And Saturday catch the Liberty Lunch Reunion at the Far Out Lounge, Delta Spirit at the Mohawk and Porches at the Scoot Inn. And, today's your last day to register for two elections to be held in May, including a city ordinance that would ban arrests for marijuana possession and also ban no-knock warrants, and the settling of runoffs that resulted from the March primary election. Make sure you get it right - as many as 25,000 mail-in ballots in that primary a few weeks ago were rejected under new state voting restrictions, almost 13 percent of them.

If they fail to do one of these two things, they will enter "Plak Tow," or the "blood fever," become violent and potentially die. Star Trek canon has established that Vulcans can have sex (and I guess, masturbate too) any time they want; not just during pon farr. But masturbating can't kill their crazy sex urges during pon farr. Only mating with a Vulcan they're bonded to can do that (or, alternatively, ritualized battle, or the "kal-il-fee").“Africa U.S.A” was a 100-acre wild animal preserve in Soledad Canyon, California (in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles). It only existed from 1965-1969 before it was tragically destroyed by a flood. “Shore Leave” was in fact the only Star Trek episode filmed there.Angela reappears at the end, after Kirk and the Caretaker have had a conversation about the planet. We don't see her coming out from underground, but at the end, when everybody is paired up we see her standing next to Rodriguez, apparently healed and/or resurrected. At no point does anyone mention her or the fact that she was injured/dead.Androids, or robots made to look like humans, are a science fiction staple. The term originates in the 1700's, as a descriptor for an automaton. (Automatons are human-like or animal-like mechanical dolls that move and perform functions when wound up or switched on. There are lots of creepy historical examples. See for yourself on YouTube.) Androids began showing up in science fiction around the turn of the century and have been heavily featured in lots of science fiction short stories, books, film, and television. Some famous and early examples are found in Metropolis, the 1927 German film by Fritz Lang, I, Robot by Issac Asimov, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick (which was the inspiration for Blade Runner), Westward , which, before it was the popular HBO series created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, was another television series from the 1970's, written and directed by Michael Crichton, and of course, Star Trek. Episodes of the Original Series that feature androids include “What Are Little Girls Made Of?", "I, Mudd", "Return to Tomorrow", and "Requiem for Methuselah.” One of the most beloved main characters of Star Trek: Next Generation is Data, an android created by Dr. Noonien Soong. Many stories about androids are not really about androids as much as they are about humans; android stories tell us about the human condition and human nature. Depictions of female androids, like the androids in The Stepford Wives or Westworld, tell us something about the ways that humans (read: men) understand, idealize, and seek to control women.

Deer Tick was started by self-taught multi-instrumentalist John McCauley as a solo songwriting endeavor in 2004. The band's instant, ear-perk appeal is McCauley's wiry, craggy voice narrating personal hardship and loss. When you hear Deer Tick albums, the honesty that pours out of the speakers punches your gut and tears your heart. Originally touring with a revolving cast of supporting musicians, McCauley solidified his rhythm section with half-brothers Dennis Michael Ryan (drums) and Christopher Dale Ryan (bass) before finalizing things with Ian Patrick O'Neil on guitar in 2009. The band's staying power and relevance is rooted in their ability to cross-stitch ringing hi-fi Americana harmonies and lo-fi alt-country vibes with melancholic Nick Drake moods and trouncing honky-tonk rumblers with tattered rockers perfect for Iggy or Kurt. That amalgamation is both timeless and contemporary. (It's worth noting that McCauley—a self-proclaimed Nirvana nut—sang and played guitar alongside surviving members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear during Cal Jam 2018.) Before Deer Tick's co-headlining show with Delta Spirit at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl, McCauley (vocals/guitar) and Ian Patrick O'Neil (guitar/vocals) chatted with PG's Chris Kies. The conversation covered Teles (and why they're the duo's current favorites) and how Fender combos have always factored into the band's sonic scripts for stage and studio. Plus, both pickers provided a quick-and-dirty sampling of their stomp situations. [Brought to you by D'Addario XPND Pedalboard: https://ddar.io/xpnd.rr (https://ddar.io/xpnd.rr)]

¡Feliz Navidad! My guest today is Stephen Shirk an engineer, producer, and owner of Shirk Studio in Chicago. Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, he began playing in bands through junior high college at Miami University where he earned a degree in Business and Marketing.  In 1998 he moved to New York City to chase his dream of working in a recording studio where he worked at The Hit Factory, Pink Noise and Three Tree Productions as well as assisting on sessions at many legendary NYC facilities like Avatar (Power Station), Clinton, Right Track, and Sound on Sound. Recording in New York also exposed Stephen to a unique artistic community beyond that of music. His collaboration with Nadine Robinson would ultimately land one of his sound designs in the Museum of Modern Art’s Tempo exhibit in 2002.    In 2004, Stephen relocated to Chicago to continue producing and recording bands, creating sound for art installations, as well as providing audio services for the advertising community. This was the beginning of SHIRK studios. Through a chance meeting at SXSW in 2006, Stephen partnered with the music blog, HearYa.com, and began recording and filming the HearYa live sessions.  The video series featured powerful live in-studio recordings of artists like Alabama Shakes, Delta Spirit, Other Lives, Patterson Hood, White Denim, Strand of Oaks, Rayland Baxter and many more. In 2013 he acquired the building that now houses SHIRK studios in Chicago’s West Town neighbourhood. Firmly planted in Chicago, Stephen records, produces and hosts sessions with some of Chicago’s most celebrated artists as well as those just getting their start. I had the pleasure of spending a day at Shirk studio in 2019 when I hosted a mixing clinic there with Anthony Gravino. We spent the day listening to the beautiful Sphere console and I knew I found a new favourite studio in Chicago. Plus Stephen is the coolest. Thanks to our sponsors! One stormy morning in 1880, naturalist John Muir set out to explore a glacier in Alaska's Taylor Bay, accompanied by an adventurous little dog that had joined his expedition. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the harrowing predicament that the two faced on the ice, which became the basis of one of Muir's most beloved stories. We'll also marvel at some phonetic actors and puzzle over a season for vasectomies. Intro: In 1904 a 12-year-old J.R.R. Tolkien sent this rebus to a family friend. Matthew Logan Vasquez spent the past decade fronting the California-based band Delta Spirit, which has released four albums. The band's music soundtracked the final scene of the television series "Friday Night Lights." Delta Spirit is currently on a break, but Vasquez isn't slowing down. He released his debut solo LP, "Solicitor Returns," in February and recently played a headlining show at Denver's Lost Lake Lounge. The album is Vasquez's attempt to move away from pure Americana-folk and into a rock 'n' roll sound.

In December 2014, Tasjan spent a week recording In the Blazes at New Monkey Studio in Los Angeles, the same hallowed space where Elliott Smith cut his final record From a Basement on the Hill. At the helm for the sessions was Tasjan’s good buddy Eli Thomson of the band Everest, whom he’d met on tour while pulling a stint with Brooklyn indie-folk outfit Alberta Cross, and who produced Delta Spirit’s Ode to Sunshine. “Eli is a very grounded dude, personality-wise—he has a zen way of being,” Tasjan says. “On a subconscious level, that’s a comforting thing to be around during the creative process. You’re relaxed enough to try new things and blow it. And for better or worse, part of my thing is messing up—I have to mess it up first to do it great. Really, that idea permeates my life, far beyond being a songwriter,” Tasjan explains. “I always identify with the underdog. Some people, if you look at ‘em, you wouldn’t think much of them, but then they surprise you. It turns out there’s something about them that blows your mind. And that’s kind of the overarching theme of most of the songs on In the Blazes.”Truth in advertising—In the Blazes finds Aaron Lee Tasjan more than just one toke over the line. But it’s cool. The charmingly self-deprecating underdog of an East Nashville songwriter can handle his shit. Instead of the munchies, young gun Tasjan—who cut his teeth playing lead guitar in late-period incarnations of The New York Dolls and Drivin N Cryin—wound up with one hell of a debut LP. http://aaronleetasjan.com
