Middle age.  What comes to mind?  Next question:  When you think of a woman who's aged somewhere between her early 40s and mid 60s, who do you picture?  And if you're not one of then, when you're thinking about women in this age range, how do they show up in your daily life?  Do they show up?  And, what race is the woman you pictured?   Depending on your answers, and your own stage of life, you'll process the conversation with our next guest in different ways; something personal to you, or something that you might need to open your eyes to, especially if you're in any sort of people-facing business.  No matter what, it's a conversation that we should all be having more frequently.  For us, our big takeaway was that there is more than just the maiden-mother-sage concept to the trajectory of womanhood: there is also the queen phase.  That's midlife.  And that's what Valerie Albarda talks with us about, to make sure midlife women are not made to feel invisible - with the extra layer of what it's like to be a midlife woman of color. Have questions, comments, or concerns? Email us at hello@dearwhitewomen.com What to listen for: The definition of midlife What is the invisibility trifecta, and why is it important for society to be aware of it? What are the things we can all do to open our eyes to the value that midlife women - in particular midlife women of color - can bring to the table?   About Valerie: In 2015, Valerie Albarda decided to take off her blinders and go through life with her midlife eyes wide open by embracing this dynamic and opportunistic time in her life. That same year, she created the website, Midlife-A-Go-Go, to help women navigate this pivotal time in their lives and to understand that they can enjoy the midlife and skip the crisis. In 2018, she added “Midlife-A-Go-Go the podcast!” to her roster. Her podcast meets women where they live – in the second spring of life – and has candid conversations on the ups, the downs and the “everything in between” of midlife. Valerie is a recent TEDx speaker with her Talk, “The Invisibility Trifecta: Coming Out of the Shadows.” In her Talk, she focuses on one of society's forgotten demographic: midlife women of color. She takes the idea of the ‘invisible woman syndrome' one step further and sets out to disrupt the mindset that midlife women of color are disposable. Valerie is a writer, author, podcaster, and speaker. Her writings have appeared across the web, including on HuffPost, Find UR Cool, Kindra and Midlife Boulevard.   Buy our book, Dear White Women: Let's Get (Un)comfortable Talking About Racism, and leave us a review on Amazon! This episode is my goodbye to you, the Midlife-A-Go-Go the podcast audience. The podcast is going on an indefinite hiatus. But please don't let that stop you from continuing to experience the wonderful bounty of episodes that focus on midlife women. Over the past three years, I've recorded 76 episodes. That's a true accomplishment for me. Now, it's time for me to hang up my microphone – for now – and focus on other pursuits in my life. It's been a wonderful ride and I would never have made it this far without a loyal audience who listened, commented, engaged and recommended the show to others. Finding Enjoyment in the Next Stage of Life As women age, we're often pushed aside and forgotten about as if our value diminishes with time. Our guest for this week's episode, Valerie Albarda, has made it her mission to remind aging women of our worth, and make sure we are seen and heard in a society that dismisses us. She talks about how the different aspects of our identity, namely race, age, and gender, can play a role in what she calls the “invisible woman syndrome”.  Valerie Albarda likes to think of herself as a midlife women's advocate. She tries to inspire women to embrace this time in life, and to squash the notion that just because we're midlife, it doesn't mean we have to be in crisis. She was recently diagnosed with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, and that changed her world. Even with this, she didn't consider herself in crisis. Valerie began researching and reading about MS so that she can become an advocate and ally for those also dealing with the disease, especially midlife women. “I'll get even more granular: I advocate for midlife women of color who have MS because the medical community often treats us as disposable people; collateral damage in the healthcare system. I don't like that.” Albarda is also a TEDx alumna. She recently completed her Talk in October 2020, and it started airing in February. “My talk, "The Invisibility Trifecta," tackles the invisible woman syndrome as it relates to women of color (hence, the Trifecta: midlife women of color). I grew up in Maryland with my parents and four sisters. I didn't go to college straight out of high school. At the age of 37 1/2, I was determined to get my degree. I completed an accelerated degree program in 2.5 years and walked across the stage to get my BS in Management 2 months shy of my 40th birthday.” Currently, by day she works as a senior writer for a large home improvement retailer. On her off hours, She devotes most of her time to her website, Midlife-A-Go-Go, her podcast, MS work and spending time with her family. She's a wanderlust at heart and she can't wait to embark on her next adventure. “I do think that we need to embrace that notion that midlife does not mean that we are at the end of our life, and that there are so many wonderful things still left for us on the horizon.“ Valerie Albarda What You'll Learn from This Episode: Valerie's journey through her multiple sclerosis diagnosis How to enjoy midlife and skip the crisis Why women in their midlife stage tend to feel like a they're a “disposable demographic” Steps you can take to redefine who you are What the “invisible woman syndrome” is and how race can exacerbate this issue Why Valerie wants both midlife women and other demographics to hear her message What it is like to have health concerns be dismissed, and why you should always be your own biggest advocate Featured on the Show: Website | Facebook | YouTube | Twitter | LinkedIn | Instagram Effortless Happiness: How to Find Your Voice and Finally Ask For What You Really Want Paperback or Kindle copy.

As we celebrate Black History Month, "Midlife-A-Go-Go the podcast!" is honoring unsung heroines by profiling a few black women in history whose names may not be at the front of your mind or in our history books, but their footprints and their legacies lives on. When I began researching for this episode, I wanted to specifically shine a spotlight on black women who did remarkable things a little later in life. Each of the women profiled today lived full lives in their own way, and each highlight that I focused on was done by a midlife woman. I hope you'll join me in celebrating the lives of these women and help to ensure that their story continues. ________________________ Visit Midlife-A-Go-GoMidlife-A-Go-Go on Facebook Midlife-A-Go-Go on Instagram Midlife-A-Go-Go on Twitter

Valerie Albarda suggests we enjoy the midlife and skip the crisis.   She has a podcast she calls Midlife-A-Go-Go, filled with interviews, stories and testaments of mid-lifers exploring their worlds, enjoying their lives and making changes that matter to us all.   Valerie recently gave a TEDxCharlotte talk titled The Invisibility Trifecta:  Coming Out of the Shadows.  In this talk, she discusses midlife invisibility and the intersection with aging, sexism and racism.  She asks us to consider how the experience of being a black woman in midlife is different and challenging: I want people to be more aware of black and other midlife women of color in society; to make room for us at the table; to show us respect; to acknowledge the value of our life experience. Now, Valerie faces another challenge, a diagnosis of Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.   Through it all she is a storyteller, an advisor and an activist.   We experienced her as both playful and formidable, a very potent mix. Menopause, aging, feeling invisible, and more - it's so much to deal with that it's understandable why we may sometimes tend to forget that men experience midlife right along with us. But here's the burning question: Do men experience midlife the same way women do? Valerie gives permission for us to have the midlife without the crisis! We stumbled upon this amazing guest on her podcast “Midlife A Go Go” and couldn't stop finding out about all things Valerie Albarda. Women not yet in menopause need to listen and know Valerie to be prepared to rock this fun season of life. After typing on Google the words “midlife” she could not find anywhere where Google separated the crisis from midlife. She addresses in this podcast the destructive process of our obsession with youth and that you are only vital when you are young. Embracing this stage and what we have to offer the world is her message. The wisdom, the depth need to be shared with the world. For some reason we have attached negative things with aging. This is a mindset shift that needs to occur. A tip :Meet yourself where you are in your life.  It is ok to look back and remember the good ole days occasionally but don't take up residence in the past. Don't allow your life to be dictated by that because it will take you down rolling around in memories. Come out of that place and think of what CAN BE!Reinvention is a big part of midlife.  It doesn't mean you have to change everything in your life though.  You can lose weight, change careers, or change your hair color. You don't have to do a whole 180 though. Get on a good path and view midlife as your coming of age! NOT the end of life.Valerie bring guests to her podcast that talk about the hard things. The changes in dynamic in our lives and bodies. She brings in doctors and experts that speak on physical and sexual changes at this new stage. Her favorite episode addresses being childless by choice. A topic that we don't hear women talking about. Making a conscious decision to not have children can be seen as a negative by some women and she dispells that myth. We value youth, fertility and beauty as a society and we get to be in the movement that brings value to all women in all stages of life.More tips from Valerie:Tip:IT'S NOT TOO LATE.  It's time to stop telling yourself that.  Those thoughts and words embedded in your mind and really do stop you. Start saying “I'm not too old to do something new”, “I'm not too old to learn something new”. When you start doing this instead you will be UNSTOPPABLE!YOU ARE NOT DONE YET!Tip:Start saying mantras to yourself.  You can find some she did on her blog!TODAY I WILL LET MY INNER WOMAN IMERGETODAY I AM STEPPING BACK INTO MY POWERTip:We cannot allow others to write our story.  You need to take back your power and take back your voice and thoughts. Strut into your day and own it! It is ok to not be for everyone. Valerie shares that she is crunchy peanut butter and someone may want nutella all up on their bread.  You don't have to Final Tip:Look inside yourself, think about the woman that you want to become. Be realistic about it. Start small. Don't allow people to shut you up, silence you. Temper your words because you don't have to be full of ugly words, but be bold about saying what's on your heart and mind. Don't allow your own internal voice to put you down or shut you up. Start believing that you have something to say and the right to say it.This is an unprecedented time for inner growth!  Stay open!Join the movement and listen to Valerie on her podcast “MIDLIFE A GO GO” on all platforms. Women in film? Not just women, but midlife+ women . . .? Good, quality roles that don't fit the stereotypical mode are few and far between for midlife+ women. We think that should change. Does it matter what stories are told? Yes, it does. And we want to see more midlife+ women in those positive roles -- not the wacky grandmother, not the foul-mouthed cranky woman, not the quintessential cougar. We're more than that. And that's what we're talking about on this episode.  Join me as I continue the conversation with Christie Glascoe (also known as Chatterbox Christie) where we talk about girl power, seeing ourselves reflected on the screen and more. ****** Midlife-A-Go-Go the podcast! In the meantime, join me as I chat with Christie Glascoe (also known as Chatterbox Christie). Midlife—whether you’re in your 40s, 50s or 60s—it’s a wonderful time to be a woman. No longer do we have to beat ourselves up (or down) and feel as if life as we know it is over. With age comes wisdom, and many midlife women could teach a thing or two to the younger generation. Midlife women are knocking down the old stereotypes and showing the world we're more than just a 'woman of a certain age.' We are midlife. On this inaugural episode of "This is What Midlife Looks Like," Midlife-A-Go-Go founder Valerie Albarda is interviewed by her husband, Maarten, about her challenges, wins and more as a midlife woman. ****** Midlife-A-Go-Go the podcast!
