Hey sister, are you a woman of faith, the nest is empty (or close) and you feel like you are starting over? Maybe you feel a little lonely and now you are re-defining you and praying about what's next.We get you! We feel you! We know what it feels like to
Robin Grunder shares why it is important to share your story and legacy for your family. She uses the term legacy writing after starting a project with her grandmother to get her life story on to paper. She encourages you to put a prompt kit together for your aging family members so that you can capture their memories and lives. She put slips of paper with questions in a jar for her grandparents along with a journal to answer to questions. These journals allowed her to bring so much to this project for her grandma. She was able to get to know her grandma as a child, a newly wed, a wife and mother. With the extra time many retired persons may have on their hands, this is a great activity to document life stories and preserve the legacy. It is never too early to write your story but it can easily become too late. There is no story that can't be redeemed either. The beautiful end of this story is that the book was finished and the manuscript complete with her name on the cover as the author. Robin called her father to go with her to present her book to her, he returned the call to tell her that she fell asleep in Iowa that night and woke in heaven this morning. Robin was able to read from the book at her funeral. While it will not be a best seller on Amazon, it is a best seller with her family. Have you forgotten how to dream? Do you struggle with reaching the goals you set? This is a recorded episode from an energy challenge that Darlene took part in. We thought the info was so amazing we had to share it. Living without dreams is dying. Darlene's vision board workshops are life changing. She teaches how to set goals that you actually get done and not just cut out some pretty pictures and glue them to a poster board. She recommends that you do a vision board every 12 months. Darlene takes us through a guided exercise to imagine your dreams. Scientific studies indicate that students that visualized they has 100% accuracy. If they didn't even try only had 55% accuracy in anything they were trying to accomplish.Darlene reminds us to write our goals down in present tense as it they have already happened. "I am enjoying walking every day for 30 minutes". The inside out work gets us to where we want to go. Has your current situation become your story? You can change it."What to say when you talk to yourself" Shad Helmstetter is the book Darlene referred to.We get guest appearances from Alison Katchkowsky, Anita and Jerrod Roussel Brenda Stroth and Margie Setterlof.Support the show
Losing a child is unimaginable and the grief unbearable. Margie takes us through her story of the death of her son and how she processed and is still processing the grief. This is a great episode to learn how to deal with those who have suffered with loss and not say empty words and how to be there for them. She also shares her download from God about the stages of grief and how they are like losing a limb. Listening and asking about the deceased is so valuable to the family members grieving. One of the worse things you can do is try to compare your loss if it is not the same. If the person has lost a child and you lost your parents, not comparing the two.For Margie, staying connected to family and friends was one of the most healing things for her. Posting memories and prayers on Facebook was also healing for her along with the community she has on Facebook. She shares a beautiful analogy of a soldier on the battlefield that loses a limb. Stage #1: The moment of injury or the grenade in the field-Stop the bleeding and stop the painEmotionally:-Its the first call and you are in shock and can't move or breathe and feel like you are dying.Stage #2: The life saving surgery stageRushed off battlefield, wounds stitched up and stabilizedEmotionally: Desperate call for survivalYou go to an operating room as well, God and His Word is his scalpel and the OR team are the close people who know your pain to stabilize you.Stage #3: The phantom pain stageThe brain and nerves not communicating well and there is severe pain in waves.Emotionally: Waves of griefThere is denial and the waves of pain are very strongStage #4: The rehab stage (the longest stage)The goal is to get from dependence to previous level of function. There are ordered phases. You have to sit over the bed, then stand up, then walk. No patients says "oh I'm glad you are here, I'm ready" to their physical therapist. To stand you must be fitted with a prosthetic leg and will need a walker, cane or hand held assist until they can walk on your own.Emotionally: Getting up literally out of bed or just getting back to cooking a meal or walking. Something you don't want to do. The Word of God can be your prosthesis to get up and get moving. We can't stand up without it. The assistive devices emotionally are things like acts of obedience that need to happen to get us through. A mindset change, healing of relationship, lifestyle healthy habits, or getting counseling. The bottom line is that you can't give up. If we give up you will go backwards. Every time you fall you get stronger and can help others.Stage #5: Discharge to home or the new life eraMust develop of a new positive self image. You never look the same again. You are not handicapped. You are still the same person. Your pain and suffering do not define you but shape you into what you will be doing. You want to come out into the world so that you can help others. Now, re-imagine what your life will look like. An amputee will have to learn how to walk up stairs, drive a car, and so many things will have to be done differently. The same is true with the emotional loss. You can find Margie here:https://www.facebook.com/sonlighthealth/?eid=ARDMBKyHqPhMpDMGEvJZ2F5_sXoKHDjx9hrC2hh2V3oF9F_6fDuFAbYJS1q5IBnEqZ5l30Eb7XZqsGDE&timeline_context_item_type=intro_card_work&timeline_context_item_source=1526717813&fref=tagSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/THEFORREALLIFE)
Arnesha speaks to our business owners and while talking financial statements and taxes is not sexy she makes it fun. We refer to the stimilus that was granted in April 2020 but the content is very applicable no matter when you listen. Before you shut down shop you need to go over these quick tips to get help getting funded.1. Assess where you are? How much money do you really need? What is your current payroll or vendor bills for the next 90 days? Can you extend your payment plan? Assess your inventory, receivables.2. What are your cash reserves on hand? If you have a line of credit, now is a great time to call and ask for an increase. If you are in good standing often they will increase your limits.3. Determine what products are available right now? What do you qualify for now? A loan? A grant? Many didn't get the stimulus. You have to file taxes to qualify for products. Get with a tax professional to get good books. Even if your books are a mess because you have been grinding it out it is important to hire a professional to get you caught up so that you can apply for help if you need it. This will also help you see if you are or are not priced correctly. If you are a service based business now it the time to add an education arm to your company and get into the digital space. Are you praying for a miracle? With less than 10% chance of survival, this story of God's healing in Dianne McGuigan's body will encourage you and your faith. Her 23 years experience in health and wellness as well as raising her children as a single mom in a holistic fashion prepared her for this personal health crisis. The Danni Johnson community came up with a prayer schedule so people were praying around the clock for her healing. Friends flew in from all over to support her and her family expecting to attend a funeral. With circulation leaving her fingers and doctors threatening amputation her friends committed to massage her extremities and guard her to protect from providers amputating. Lymphatic drainage massage was a key tool used in her healing and keeping her fingers. She miraculously came out of the coma on the 7th day (medical team had estimated a month long coma) unable to speak or walk. With therapy and the goal to make it to an event she has committed to, she walked again and was able to thank all the people who had prayed for her.Her next health crisis brought her to the realization that she needed to drive her train. Not let the train run out of control. She was able to stick to her holistic roots and use thermography and natural practices.Dianne is a successful entrepreneur who has raised her three beautiful children and is now known as "Gammy" by her 3 grand babies and with another sweet grand baby on the way.Our big take away and Dianne's message to you is that you have a choice and to get second opinions. When you get a diagnosis it is important to SLOW THE TRAIN! You can feel like everything is whirling around you and that you have to make a decision RIGHT NOW but that isn't always the case and it's ok to say that you need time to think about the treatment being suggested and that you want another opinion.LIVE!!! Women, we are great at taking care of business but the suddenly happens when we least expect it. A family member gets sick or passes and you get the call to step in and take care of business for them. Brandee Harrington shares her story when this happened with her mother and the My Coinz Journal was developed as s result of stepping in for her mother's business affairs. Are you ready for someone to take over the banking and bills? Do they know your passwords, what bills are due and account information? Is there someone in your life (mother, father, grandparent) that you may need to know these details? Things don't have to get ugly during the "suddenlies".No one wants to dig through someone else's personal stuff and we don't want them digging through ours. You have all the jobs that you already have to take care of so adding one more thing can be devastating. If you are prepared this will make all the difference. No one wants to talk about it but we need to break this mindset.Brandee will help you build your legacy. Get prepared and help empower you and your family for crisis. Brandee Harrington is an author, Real Estate Broker, Investor, and Financial Coach. She was inspired to write My COINZ Journal TM after having to scramble to find financial information after her mother suddenly became ill. She designed this resourceful tool to help loved ones manage their own and/or family members financial assets and resources. My COINZ Journal TM provides a series of steps aimed to aid family members in documenting their personal affairs. In return, it reduces chaos many experience during a life changing event.Brandee lives in Jackson, MS and is a wife, mom and business woman. As a successful designer, a creative problem solver in the health & luxury beauty retail design industry for over 25 years, he brought many diverse experiences together at the creative intersection of modern lifestyle and ancient wisdom, the east and west to help solve the global problem of sleep in his health and life coaching. "Design for me, has always been about environmental sustainability and now I've shifted my focus to personal sustainability because my own burnout and depression taught me that without your health, you can't do what you really love. I believe that true effectiveness is more about managing your energy, not your time".Most of all, I now know that sleep is the foundation of ALL well-being. Good sleep changed my life and I know it can change yours and your clients lives profoundly.Tips:1. Be consistent about your sleep. A cool dark room. Go to bed and wake up at the same time even on the weekends.2. Dress for the part. Change into your sleep clothes and get ready for a soft take off and not a crash landing.3. Be intentional about your wake up. 4. Get daylight to your eyes in the morning hours. Grounding also helps.5. No heavy meals before bed so your body is resting not digesting.6. If you can't get back to sleep for more than 15-20 minutes, get up and change rooms. Read, meditate, pray but no screen time. We went THERE! If you have ever thought about committing suicide or been in a dark place, we pray this episode brings healing to you. We thought we were going to be talking about failure, Plan A & B and how God sees our lives. We thought we were going to chat about starting over and the best is yet to come. While we were able to get that in, it isn't how this conversation ended. It went in a direction we were not expecting but we are trusting God's plan in this and pray that you share this with someone that you know may be in a dark place or maybe it's you.For those of you who have been in ministry, gone through a divorce and been hurt you may also find this encouraging that you are not alone and that God has a plan bigger than your hurt and (what you think are) mistakes. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. While it is ok to not be ok, find someone you trust to talk to. Hold on to the frays at the end of the rope. Becki says "give Him your yes! HEALTH ISSUES OVER 50 EPISODE 33There are just some things that happen after we turn 50. Well, let's be honest, after 40 really. In this episode we go through a few things that can be happening and some tips on how to help.#1 ShrinkageWe start to shrink because of the reduction in water between the discs. Some tips are yoga, chiropractic care, stretching, and using a roller ball.#2 IncontinenceLaughing and coughing become a whole new experience because your pee just doesn't stay put like it used to. You never pass up a bathroom. Kegel exercises are really the key to this. Start early and be sure you are doing them right. The Mayo clinic has instructions on how to do these right.Mayo clinic kegel exercise link:https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/mens-health/in-depth/kegel-exercises-for-men/art-20045074#3 Decreased libidoOne of the big things is women just stop feeling sexy. You can feel sexy at any age and size. Haven't you seen women that were not size 0 and were just sexy. Queen Latifah rocks her feminine! Sometimes you can be taking medication that is not helping either. A great tip is to do something new. Charli shares in this episode how she tried pole dancing classes and her mom taking belly dancing classes. Hula hooping or try that Body Groove (check her out on YouTube).#4 More Sensitive to Stress & AnxietySound sensitivity is one that we chat about. Have you ever felt like you can hear every person, the birds outside, the person cutting the tomatoes in the kitchen and the cat meowing? That is due to hormones and can cause stress. When this along with other stressors can all add up and you just blow. It is important to share with trusted friends and family so that you release the pressure. It is great now that you can pay for counseling services online. #5 Pain from joints wearing outIf you don't move it, you lose it. You just gotta keep your knees and joints moving to keep that fluid in there moving. Charli shares that she uses lemongrass essential oil on her knees to help. You may need to take an anti-inflammatory like Advil or Motrin. CBD oil and cream is super helpful as well. #6 Sleep DisordersSleep is so important! Especially for stress control and for weight loss. You release human growth hormones during sleep which helps you lose weight. If you suffer from neck pain it could be from the lack of sleep. There are great yoga practices before bedtime. We talk about sleep apnea and the importance of using your c-pap. It's time to go get a sleep study. Turn those devices off and read before bed instead. Use CBD or Lavender oil also to help with sleep issues.#7 Decreased Taste & SmellHave you noticed that you are having to salt things more often. Well, it's because you are losing your ability to taste things like you used to. The same things goes for your sense of smell. ALERT!!! Please use no more than 4-5 sprays of perfume. Just because you can't smell it doesn't me we can't! This can happen if you have worn the same perfume for a long time and have gotten used to it. Oh, and don't wear perfume or perfumed lotions to the doctor's office.#8 Skin CancerAll the damage you did to your skin when you were younger will start appearing now. You get the little age spots on your hands and face. It is now time to get every square inch of you checked by a dermatologist EVERY YEAR! Put your sunscreen on. Wear a hat.FOLLOW @burntfreckle on instagram or facebook#9 Slower MetabolismSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/THEFORREALLIFE)
You don't have to be over 50 to get great tips from this week's podcast about SEX. Please be sure to listen to this episode with headphones on to protect sensitive little ears. You may be over 60 and still loving sex and not having any issues, but there are those that are over 40 that need a few tips and tricks because things are changing. We referred to AARP for what is going on for the average person over 50. It was sad to read that such a high percentage don't even hold hands in public. Those that do are happier. Sadly 78% of couples over 10 years say they don't anymore. If you are a hand holder, adding a little squeeze adds a charge to the moment. Or play with their hand like you did when you were dating. The jokes on this one are just too many you have to listen to the episode.Did you give up something or a part of yourself that was important to you for the relationship. Almost a ⅓ have. You feel less confident, happy and less sexy. Happy partners encourage one another in their passions and hobbies. Ask your partner.. What do you wish you were still doing that you now don't do because you are with me? What do you wish you were still doing that you gave up because of me?Tip:If your spouse is a sports freak, go find out some information or the back-story on some of the players of his favorite team and you will be excited to watch the game because you will root them on like they are your friends because you know something about them. You don't have to know the strategy of the game, it is just a tool to help you tolerate the game and your spouse will be so happy to have you involved in it.Over 90% of men say they tell their spouse they love them but only less than 60% of women say they did. 85% of couples that are happy say they say it at least once a week. Charli shares that she is intentional that there is nothing left unsaid if someone or she dies. People need to know how you feel.Tip:Set your spouse up for success. Send them pics of things you love and where you get massages or nails done. Gift giving then will be stuff you want and love but still a surprise because you sent lot of options.Tip:Ask them “why do you love me today”? You can do this with anyone. We think a lot of things that we don't say. Chari and Randy do this almost every day and they aren't allowed to say the same thing from the day before. You then look for things to notice because you know you will be asked.Spice things up a little by adding a lotion or potion and hey, even a little toy! Now you know how funny this part of the podcast is so go check it out. Do you still passionately kiss? So many still dont and sadly this is how to get the motor runnin' for a woman. Tip:Get back in the habit of passionate kissing. Set the mood with music. Give each other massages.Do you have a date night? The happiest couples do. If you aren't used to doing this and it may be difficult at first and you may even argue because you aren't used to being together one on one like this without kids and other people. Tip:Take turns being in charge of the date night so you try new and fun things.Telling men that they are respected will stir up passion and life back into your marriage. Don't be phony. Look for real reasons and watch his face as you say this to him that you “respect how he…”. All relationships need tending. Women it is time to rise up and take your place in the world! If you feel like you've made choices in life that has kept you back, you can stop believing that lie. Dr. Cortney tells her story of being a single mom on food stamps to getting her doctorate degree and running her own million dollar children's home health agency. She and her agencies has served over 100,000 children with special needs. She finally got fed up with dealing with bosses that weren't appreciative she started her own home health company. At thirty seven she decided to go back to school and get her doctorate degree in Organizational Leadership. She shares that at orientation she had to write her 80th birthday toast and realized she wasn't where she wanted to be. Just a few months later she had a stroke and realized that she was given a chance to make a difference. She focussed on women in leadership and narrowing the gender gap.We are still more than 100 years from gender equality at the C level. One of the four challenges she goes into is the lack of confidence that women have even at the executive level. This was the common denominator in all four of the challenges. We've been told to be seen and not heard, mind your manners, wear your Spanx to keep it all in but no one is telling “Bubba” to suck his gut in and pull up his pants. Another thing we face in growing our careers as women is other women. We act like crabs in a barrel. We seem to always get back to mindset and the inner mean girl that is telling you that you aren't good enough and wearing down your confidence. Women we need to straighten each other's crowns and not knock them off. We need to remind each other of who we are and who we can be!She shares that RESILIENCE is her super power. It is like a muscle and you need to keep using it to grow it. This is closely related to confidence. “Confidence is found at the intersection of courage to know your purpose and the faith to walk in that purpose”. Dr. Cortney BakerRight there at that intersection is where your confidence lies. If you have sent kids off to school and have the day alone again or maybe an empty nester, you are looking for the next new thing but afraid and not confident. Dr. Cortney is a great guide for those women who know the path they want but just maybe don't know how. She takes women zero to making that first sale or getting that first client and on to building to every level of success. We need to remember that if someone is paying you to do something and you don't have a boss, then you are a business owner and there are responsibilities to that. The IRS sees you as a business even if you are calling it a “side hustle”. We also address how to handle rejection and how to grow from it. Why are you taking it so personally? Kiss the frog and keep moving so that you get closer to your ideal customer or person you are going to hire. Until then BE IT UNTIL YOU BELIEVE IT! Shut that little voice inside you up that is telling you that you aren't enough.Last, we discuss why we need coaching for our business'. Dr. Cortney coaches women from start to finish and not having enough money to get coaching is not a good excuse. Betting on yourself and investing in yourself is the one thing you can control. TFRL SHOW NOTES #30DON'T SHRINK YOUR DREAMSOr DARE TO BE RAREThere are so many times in our lives that we change stations and our identity. We may start with being a mom and carrying a diaper bag all around and then when your babies are out of diapers you don't quite know what to do with your arms without the diaper bag but you get used to it. Now you may have kids that are driving themselves or they are out of the house and you are not quite sure what to do. We want to be cautious to not join the comparison tribe by looking what everyone is doing on FaceBook.Darlene shares that she had a hard time accepting her voice and not hating to hear herself. Now she loves her voice and using it for a purpose (being on this podcast). That inner mean girl seems to be something we talk about a lot. Apparently it is something that we need to get control of and not let her take over and minimize what we are here for.It may be time to up your dreams. Do you have something that you really want to do and need to get qualified for? Do you need to go back to school? Get some skill set training? We can't expect to go there if we haven't prepared for it.WE LOVE THINGS THAT ARE RARE.We value things that are rare. Decide that you don't want to be average anymore and you want to shift things around. Are you saying “I always attract…or people always treat met…” then it is time to realize that YOU ARE THE COMMON DENOMINATOR. It is time to be self aware and find out why you are attracting the same type of people or situations. What do you need to change to attract what you are wanting. Do you want to get paid more and attract a better job? Do what you need to do to level up and get that job and paid more.Do you want to attract healthier or happier friends or a spouse? Then you become healthier and happier. Oh Darlene goes there and tells us that “people treat us the way we teach them to”. She decided to be rare and she lost some relationships but they weren't serving her well. Lindsay Preston was such a great guest this week encouraged goal gettin' fear facin' women to go after the life they are meant to live. As a life coach, her super power is helping women find their mindset blocks and uncover their strengths. When she says “strengths” she uses the Clifton Strengths Assessment to test her client's natural talents. Only 1 in 33 million will have the top 5 strengths that you do. Her clients can see how they can implement their strengths as tools in their lives. “When you are living in your strengths you are like a kid in a candy store”.Limiting mindsets or “bullet holes”, are uncovered and see where in our childhood maybe we had a bad test grade and now afraid to shine. Her events or “Strength Suares” help women to understand how to understand their Clifton Strengths. These live workshops are interactive and fun. Lindsay shares that many women are just checking off the boxes like married… check… babies… check and don't really have a path other than that to follow. There is more to life than checking off the boxes. The top mindset that she has found is:I am not enough. When we pair our strengths with our mindsets that voice will overpower it and become the inner mean girl. It is time then to become aware of it and realize that it was a deep inner voice that needs to be acknowledged and dismissed. In the past we have focussed on fixing our weaknesses. When we are sick we go to the doctor. When our relationships are struggling we go to therapy. Her focus brings her clients to love themselves and feel empowered by focussing on what is right. Some of your strengths can get into overdrive and just need a little tweaking. Even in corporate we focus on what we aren't doing so great instead of putting emphasis on the strengths and tweaking their job to align with their strengths and applying them in a way that is productive and fun. You will be able to get it all done when you know where you are going. Why you know your why you get things done. LIndsay shares how fun it is to work with clients who know their why and she can partner with them in their strengths. It is really hard for people to really get how amazing they are because of the limiting beliefs and mindsets they need to overcome. There are still those little kids inside us reminding us of 8th grade or when you didn't get picked for the game telling you that you aren't enough. Getting those cleared out is necessary to move forward. If you aren't taking massive action once you know who you are and what you want it is an indicator that there is mindset issues to deal with. You may not get over them completely but you will recognize them. How do you deal with the inner mean girl?Top tipWhenever you are feeling an emotional charge of more than 7 seconds… YES 7 SECONDS…. It means that there is something deeper. Ask yourself, what am I fearing? You can interview your inner mean girl. In this episode Lindsay shows us how to do that, name her, and control her. If you aren't taking massive action then there is a mindset to deal with. Change is scary but so important to your personal growth.IF YOU AREN'T CLIMBING -----YOU'RE SLIDINGNone of us dreamed of being same ole…. same ole. No one wants to have the same house (or at least the same decorations), same hairstyle, same makeup, same car, or the same job. So we don't want to have the same BRAIN either !! We don't want to be the generation that says “ that's just the way it is..blah blah blahTHE BRAIN IS NEUROPLASTIC AND CHANGES ACCORDING TO ITS ENVIRONMENT. We have the power to determine the direction of our lives. It can be as simple as changing hair color and we are giving you permission to make some changes. It's time to get out of Routines OR Ruts and make some changes. Are you interested in different things? OR Better yet...Different People ! What is the worst that can happen if you try something new? You fail? You may. So what! Open your ears and your heart- you just may learn somethingAt least be sincerely interested in what their passion is- your energy comes through and either inspires and encourages them or they can tell you are just not tuned in. Choose to be inspiring and encouraging and not thinking about what you are going to say next. You want to hear them so that you get options to try new things. How about trying new hobbies or a new place to travel. You may not be able to take a week long vacation but a day trip 1-2 hrs away from home can give a much needed boost. Some of us don't even know what our hobbies are or don't even have any.Jump on to YouTube and try something new! Or how about starting to write your memoirs for your family and grandkids and great grandkids? Ok gotta get real, some of you need a new look. You don't have to have brand new clothes, but stop wearing the same look you had 10, 20 and some of you 30 years ago. Darlene has a great tip to go to a nice department store and look what is in style, what are women wearing, try on some new things. You can then go to Ross or TJ Maxx and recreate the look.We love Dominique Sasche and her YouTube channel. TFRL PODCAST NOTES #25Who said you can't be a bomb technician just because you are a beautiful young woman? They tried but didn't succeed with Peggy Munson! She proved them all wrong. Peggy started as a Las Vegas dancer then turned one of the first firefighters in Las Vegas to The Arson Bomb Squad. She has now returned to her roots of dancer to keep it fun and young. As a single mom, she found that God was bigger than anything she thought she couldn't do so she made a “God Can” to put all the things in it that they couldn't do but God could do. Every 6 months they would go look through the notes and see what God had done. She taught her daughter that God says “yes”, “no”, or “wait”. This is a tool that you and your children can use for the rest of your life. Her daughter inspired her to get out of an abusive relationship and to prove that she could do anything. She caused her to do things that she thought she could never do like get through a fire academy and a bomb squad academy. She was the 4th woman hired for the City of Las Vegas fire department. She walked into the firehouse full of men with a box of donuts and prayer. The captain told her she should be home barefoot and pregnant. She didn't leave. She didn't allow the harassment to scare her off. She's the one ON FIRE now at 56 making it happen! Life isn't over, she is retired and now she has new passions and excited about what is next. Her confidence is soaring and she is unstoppable!“Before I danced for everyone else and now I dance from my soul”Dancing has helped her process her grief of the loss of loved ones. What is her secret? Consistency. Not doing hours at the gym but having the habit to do even 20 minutes a day moving your body.Moving has kept her healthy with no ailments. She releases her negative emotions with movement. A little bit is better than nothing. Valerie gives permission for us to have the midlife without the crisis! We stumbled upon this amazing guest on her podcast “Midlife A Go Go” and couldn't stop finding out about all things Valerie Albarda. Women not yet in menopause need to listen and know Valerie to be prepared to rock this fun season of life. After typing on Google the words “midlife” she could not find anywhere where Google separated the crisis from midlife. She addresses in this podcast the destructive process of our obsession with youth and that you are only vital when you are young. Embracing this stage and what we have to offer the world is her message. The wisdom, the depth need to be shared with the world. For some reason we have attached negative things with aging. This is a mindset shift that needs to occur. A tip :Meet yourself where you are in your life. It is ok to look back and remember the good ole days occasionally but don't take up residence in the past. Don't allow your life to be dictated by that because it will take you down rolling around in memories. Come out of that place and think of what CAN BE!Reinvention is a big part of midlife. It doesn't mean you have to change everything in your life though. You can lose weight, change careers, or change your hair color. You don't have to do a whole 180 though. Get on a good path and view midlife as your coming of age! NOT the end of life.Valerie bring guests to her podcast that talk about the hard things. The changes in dynamic in our lives and bodies. She brings in doctors and experts that speak on physical and sexual changes at this new stage. Her favorite episode addresses being childless by choice. A topic that we don't hear women talking about. Making a conscious decision to not have children can be seen as a negative by some women and she dispells that myth. We value youth, fertility and beauty as a society and we get to be in the movement that brings value to all women in all stages of life.More tips from Valerie:Tip:IT'S NOT TOO LATE. It's time to stop telling yourself that. Those thoughts and words embedded in your mind and really do stop you. Start saying “I'm not too old to do something new”, “I'm not too old to learn something new”. When you start doing this instead you will be UNSTOPPABLE!YOU ARE NOT DONE YET!Tip:Start saying mantras to yourself. You can find some she did on her blog!TODAY I WILL LET MY INNER WOMAN IMERGETODAY I AM STEPPING BACK INTO MY POWERTip:We cannot allow others to write our story. You need to take back your power and take back your voice and thoughts. Strut into your day and own it! It is ok to not be for everyone. Valerie shares that she is crunchy peanut butter and someone may want nutella all up on their bread. You don't have to Final Tip:Look inside yourself, think about the woman that you want to become. Be realistic about it. Start small. Don't allow people to shut you up, silence you. Temper your words because you don't have to be full of ugly words, but be bold about saying what's on your heart and mind. Don't allow your own internal voice to put you down or shut you up. Start believing that you have something to say and the right to say it.This is an unprecedented time for inner growth! Stay open!Join the movement and listen to Valerie on her podcast “MIDLIFE A GO GO” on all platforms. This month we are focussing on self care and especially for those who are caregivers to loved ones. Brenda Stroth shows us how she fills her cup while being the full-time caregiver for her husband for the last six years.Brenda Stroth is an inspiring speaker and author who draws her audience into her experiences through vulnerability, transparency, humor and passion for the Kingdom of God. She has been a sought-after speaker for Women's' Retreats and Conferences for over 20 years. During this time, she has beenpursuing her love for studying and teaching Biblical truths from a Hebraic perspective. She sees the Hebrew text as a key to gleaning often missed insights into biblical texts and finding hidden treasures from historical and cultural occurrences, as well as wisdoms from sages and scribes of eras past. For the past several years, Brenda has been hosting a torah study community via weekly zoom conferences. She is also currently completing a workbook on the Hebrew alphabet and its hieroglyphic wisdoms. Her goal is not to teach “biblical knowledge”, but rather to encourage, empower and stir uppassion to know and love Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) and see Him revealed within all the Hebrew scriptures. In 2013 Brenda's life was dramatically impacted when her husband was diagnosed with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, and then again in 2016 when he was also diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. As with every challenge she is handed, Brenda has poured her energies and talents into becoming his Advocate and navigating through these daily challenges. She is determined to enrich her husband's life and to continue walking through this journey with gratitude, grace, humor and apassionate fierceness to see God glorified in every circumstance of her life. Little known fact about Brenda: her hobbies are breakfast, lunch, dinner and Caramel lattes with extraWhip. Brenda and Jeff have been married 35 years and reside in beautiful Texarkana, Texas. They have 4 adult children and one grandson. One of the first things that she realized is that she started to fall apart healthwise and couldn't turn her neck. Caregiving will sadly age you and taking care of yourself is so important. Another thing she has incorporated is respite care. Your energy is doubled up taking care of things that the person is no longer able to do and it is exhausting. She started adding positive things into their life to help. She had a friend come one day a week to take her husband to the gym and then go to lunch allowing her to have some alone time.Yoga is another thing that she has done to relax her mind, strengthen her body and relieve stress. This also helps manage emotions and breathing in the midst of situations at home as well.Eating properly has also made a huge difference. She is choosing to fuel her body to have energy that she would normally not have. Instead of grabbing a bag of potato chips and her body fighting to process that she chooses food that will actually fuel her to be able to do the things she has to do.Guarding her time and energy is also super important to Brenda. She decided she has only so much time and she has to let go of the things that were not valuable to her and replaced them with things that served the purpose of fueling her relationship or body/mind. An example was cutting out some non-essential reading and saying “no” more. Another example was letting her hair go grey and just rock a great haircut. And boy is she rocking that grey!!!We discussed how she initially asked for help. She became aware that she had decision fatigue from being the one who made all the decisions. Compassion fatigue also has made its mark on her. She was always so private with what was happening Support the show
STACEY HILL - Warrior of Faith, Health & Wellness** We apologize for any technical glitches but this is soo good we had to still share**This disco lovin' registered dietician has a passion for helping women to love their body. Her tagline is Education, Empowerment and Inspiring You to #LoveYourBody. She is a warrior of Faith, Health and Wellness. She has definitely made lemonade out of lemons! Her journey began with her divorce in 2015.... and that was the beginning of my calling to show women that there is life to be lived. But when the MS hit-that's when the Warrior began and the building of her nutrition business re-emerged. With her MS it was clear her life mission is now to spread body confidence and self love - even with a disease and obstacles.Stacey shares how you can still get your exercise in even when you are disabled or when you aren't 100%. She has found a way to keep in shape with her MS diagnosis. She is a dietician that isn't intimidating and REAL. She is intentional about eating clean so that she feels great not because of shame of how her body looks. “I'll never forget the feeling of self loathing I felt” after I had gained 20lbs from being on steroids and going to Target to get a baggy shirt. She decided to accept the process and love herself right here where she was. She needed to change her mindset first. She asked God to help see herself how HE sees her. He loved her right where she was.She found herself not wanting to do things with her friends because of how she looked. She has learned to say yes and intentionally indulge. You are not falling off a wagon. THERE IS NO WAGON! Give yourself food freedom and be ok with the process of trying to lose weight and be healthy. You learn to be ok with today and you get psyched where you might be in 3 weeks. In her Warriors of Faith, Health and Wellness group they talk about challenges without the shame. When you hear yourself shaming your body or talking bad about where you are, STOP! You wouldn't allow anyone to speak to your daughter or friend like that. We hear it all the time but truly it is not about a diet! It is about a lifestyle. Her mantra is “every meal is a Monday morning”. You may have gotten off kilter this weekend, you had fun, acknowledge that and now make better choices right now. It's a new meal and a new mindset! You can work one on one with Stacey as your nutrition coach or in her group. She helps you find your eating plan and work in intermittent fasting.Stacey leaves us with these tips:Tip #1Get with your mind that no matter where you are, you are beautiful and fearfully made.Tip #2Every day be nice to YOU! Stop making yourself be perfect. Be content with the choices that you make even if not perfect. Tip #3Surround yourself with other people that love their bodies too and on the same path as you are. This week's owner of the Ultimate Fitness Club and podcaster “The Ultimate Journey of Selfcare”. She walks her talk and you can hear her on her Tuesday LIVES on her FaceBook group. We asked her why don't women make the time for their health and fitness. Alison quickly told us is that it is because we don't see it as a priority and it is too hard so they say “I'm too busy”. Too busy is not something you will hear from her. She owns a private gym, is a personal trainer, conducts destination retreats, runs a facebook community, is a private coach and has just launched her own podcast (whew). When you take time for physical activity it actually adds time to your day because your brain is clear, functioning better and you just feel better! We laughed as we talked about people who say that they don't have the time like those famous people do. The truth is that we all have the same 24 hours and you are your biggest asset to take care of. When we say we have to do this and that and this and that we are saying that we aren't important. As women, we put everyone else first and wear business like a badge. Alison suggests to carve out ten minutes at the beginning of your day or end of your day and set your intentions. What if you sit all day and not very active? Tip: Set your phone to go off and get up every hour and walk around for a few minutes and then go back to sitting down.Prolonged sitting has been studied out and the physiologic effects for sitting 8-10 hours a day is equivalent to bed rest on your body. Muscles lose strength and more importantly they lose memory. We chatted a bit about caregivers who find themselves stuck in a sedentary lifestyle with the loved one. Sitting in a chair next to someone who is movement challenged you can still set your timer and move around even if it is stretching. People need to see others doing it to see that they can do it. Even after surgery PT comes in and makes you move while you are in bed. A little thing here and there is a step in the right direction. A mindset is that you start and stop things but your physical health is something that becomes a lifestyle not something to start and stop. We automatically tell ourselves that we can't do something when we are challenged to do something new. The key is to find something that works for you and stick with it.Another limiting belief is that “I have to get ready first”. This is like getting the house ready before the housekeeper gets there. Ya just gotta start! Be intentional and stick to it. This one hit Charli between the eyes. Alison tells us that this is just a delay tacted (ouch). Tip:Set an appointment for yourself to exercise. Put it in your calendar.Functional fitness was a new term for us but what a great way to do things at home. Alison suggests getting a stability ball and it can be used for so many things in your home and to work out.You can join her facebook community:Living Your Ultimate Life Through Fitness and Self CareThis is a great place to get help from Alison if you are stuck and need some help or answers to questions. So.. RECAP AND FINAL TIPS...-SET YOUR TIMER TO GET UP EVERY HOUR AND MOVE-SET APPOINTMENTS WITH YOURSELF TO EXERCISE-SELF CARE IF MORE THAN EXERCISING AND EATING RIGHT, ADD SOME FUN STUFF TO RECHARGEOh… ps…SELF CARE IS NOT SELFISH!!! If you are saying that, take a minute and check yourself and see what you are really saying by that. How do you find Alison??Facebook:Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/THEFORREALLIFE)
Women are natural caregivers to everyone. If you are a mother caring for small children, or grand-parent caring for littles, a wife caring for a spouse (or husband) or caring for a friend, relative or aging parent, you want to tune in this week as we interview Amy Goyer from AARP about self care for the caregivers.Amy started her career as a music therapist and has taken her life as a caregiver to family members and turned it into a successful career with aging adults and caregiving. She is also a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS). A passionate champion for family caregivers, Amy's work is the perfect fusion of her personal and professional experiences. She has been a family caregiver her entire adult life. Her caregiving roleshave varied from long-distance caregiving to very intensive “hands on” care for her parents' every need. In this week's episode we hear about Amy's 4 part caregiving analogy to take care of yourself. She didn't quite relate with the “oxygen mask” theory because that is a crisis and caregiving is a marathon. She started looking at how you fill your tank.Quick tank fills: The little things you can do throughout your day to fill your tank and nurture your soul. It can be as simple as a cup of coffee, a hug or a few minutes on FaceBook. Having flowers in the house. These often have to be things you do while you are caregiving like jumping jacks while your loved one goes to the restroom. Being mindful during the moments. Being present in what you are doing and not missing the small things.Premium Fill Ups: These take a little more time. It may be taking a class, watching a movie or going to book club with friends or out to dinner. Your premium fill up could include your loved one. Exercise classes, a walk and Amy paid for a private Pilates coach to keep her accountable. IT IS NOT BEING SELFISH IT IS BEING PRACTICAL! Tune Ups: This is time away from caregiving. From a day to a week minimum to get away. You are a better caregiver when you get a break from being “on” all the time. Organizations do trips that have scholarships and grants for family caregivers to go on trips. You need the reset.-Eldercare local aging organization http://www.Eldercare.acl.gov-Check with the area agency for aging to see what respite care you qualify for-Hospice patients are eligible for respiteRoutine Maintenance: Without these the car will break down-Sleep! -Doctor Appointments. Elizabeth's passion for women over 50 is contagious! We loved her message about going from VICTIM to VICTOR. Being a victor means you are now using that experience to teach and help others. We have all had bad things that have happened to us and don't need to compete with who had it worse, but instead let's teach each other on how we won!“I HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN MORE THAN I THOUGHT I KNEW”Her biggest fear since she was a child that she wouldn't make it. That inner voice was overcome by making a plan to insure that she would not end up under a bridge as a bag lady. She found a solution so that fear did not have control over her. Find a solution that your fear can't beat!See more and find out how to learn more about Elizabeth in our show notes...http://www.darleneandcharli.comSupport the show
