Deborah: Judges 4:4-ff 1. No military function 2. Barak was to lead the army 3. She admonishes him for wanting her along (lack of male leadership) 4. To shame him…victory will be at the hand of a woman (Jael)Jesus & the Early Church in their current cultural context: (Jerusalem in the Time of Jesus, by Joachim Jeremias) 1. Not permissible for men to talk to women publically: Accordingly, a woman was expected to remain unobserved in public. There is a recorded saying of one of the oldest scribes we know, Jose b. Johanan of Jerusalem (c. 150 BC): ‘Talk not much with womankind', to which was added, ‘They said this of a man's own wife: how much more of his fellow's wife!' (M. Ab. i.5). Rules of propriety forbade a man to be alone with a woman (M.Kidd. Iv.12; etc…see John 4:27), to look at a married woman, or even to give her a greeting. It was disgraceful for a scholar to speak with a woman in the street. “ p. 360 2. Not to teach a woman Torah: “Further, she was exempt from study of the Torah; R. Eliezer (c. AD 90), a tireless upholder of the old tradition, says impressively, ‘If a man gives his daughter a knowledge of the Law it is as though he taught her lechery' (M. Sot. iii.4). Here is another of this scholar's sayings: ‘Better to burn the Torah than to teach it to women', j. Sot. iii.4). 3. The testimony of women was not valid in court.Notable Women in the NT:Pricilla: Acts 18:24-26 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. However, what CVS omitted is that the donations collected from customers through in-store fundraising weren't going to be in addition to the initial pledge. Rather, they would be used in lieu of donations coming from CVS's coffers. Customers subsidized CVS's generosity without knowing it, as their donations were part of a larger pledge that CVS had made to the ADA. No matter how you slice it, infidelity is not a word you want associated with your marriage. That's true for financial infidelity as well. So how do you figure out if your partner is being financially unfaithful? And what should you do? Pete and Seth are joined today by Wealthspire's Aviva Pinto to discuss financial infidelity, rebuilding your credit, alimony, and more. What is financial infidelity? We break down the definition and why it's such a problem for marriages. If you're done with your divorce, is it too late to call Aviva or someone like her to get help? Nope! People may not realize the financial infidelity until it's done, or perhaps they had reasons they wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible, but there still can be remedies. We look at financial planning and the importance of rebuilding your credit, as well as why a single credit card can help that credit score climb back up. It's an important topic today, and honestly it's relevant for people who aren't getting divorced too. Check it out! She represents a wide range of clients, including hedge funds and private equity companies, shareholder activists, and real estate developers. She was named in Notable Women in Law by Crain's New York Business, and frequently appears in the New York Super Lawyers list. In this episode… How do you move up the leadership ladder at your firm? Do you jump at any opportunity presented to you at the drop of a hat? Or do you hang back and wait until someone approaches you personally with an offer? According to Lori Marks-Esterman, Chair of the Litigation Practice Group at Olshan Frome Wolosky, you're doing your career—and yourself—a disservice if you're doing the latter. In her 20 years as a seasoned trial attorney, she has progressed from Litigator to Partner, and she did this successfully despite being in contradiction to senior professionals. What made her so successful in navigating her way through a cut-throat business and profession? In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge, Elise Holtzman interviews Lori Marks-Esterman, Chair of Litigation Practice Group at Olshan Frome Wolosky, about her strategies for progressing to a leadership role at her firm—and how you can do the same in yours. Lori also discusses whether women approach leadership differently, the biggest and most common obstacles between you and career advancement, and why she believes it's okay to ask questions as long as you come prepared before you approach anyone with them.
