She was excited to be beginning a collaboration with Clarey from Gwyllem Clothing (now Storyline). This conversation is a full circle moment where Dalee reflects on her journey over the past 2 years, from launching her clothing line with Clarey, taking their collections on the road, experiencing a period of huge growth which culminated in a time of emotional and physical burn out.Dalee shares the shifts in their business, her personal life and her health that were necessary as they grappled with a frenzy of creativity alongside unrealistic deadlines and an inherently flawed system that doesn't make space for the holistic needs and wellbeing of any human. We speak about Dalee's transition into perimenopause and the impact this transformation had on her work, her relationships and her health. And we have the most beautiful conversation about two of my favourite adaptogens- Withania and Tulsi.**SHOW  NOTES**Dalee mentions Holistic Business planning as a method for maintaining suitability in business- the book she referenced is here**CONNECT**You can connect with Dalee through her Substack community here  and watch her creative process, and follow along with her slow build on their intentional community. You can buy Dalee Ella clothing through her collaboration with Clarey as Slow Fashion Australia hereConnect with Dalee via her new website soon hereYou can connect with JESS via instagram and facebook here and here,  join her newsletter community here, buy her handmade herbal products here or book an appointment here.**BUY ME A CUPPA**If you liked the episode and want more, a cuppa fuels my work and time, which is given for free. Localisation is a rapidly growing movement resisting globalisation through the rebuilding of place-based cultures, strengthening local communities, and reconnecting people with nature. It's an alternative economic model offering a healthier way of living in the face of increasing threats to human and ecological wellbeing. This week on Earth Matters we speak to Helena Norberg-Hodge, founder of the worldwide localisation movement and the international non-profit organization Local Futures.  We also speak environmental leader Arabella Douglas, a Minyunbul woman of the Bunjalung nation who is addressing environmental challenges in Northern NSW and South East Queensland. Given the challenges of developing SDA in the Tweed and Byron regions, primarily the cost and availability of suitable land and sites, it's unsurprising that so few new SDA homes have come to the market. There are only 30 New-Build homes and 11 properties (83 places in total) in the pipeline for the entire Richmond-Tweed SA4. Whether you're facing your own mental health battles or supporting someone who is, this episode is a powerful reminder that it's okay to not be okay, and that asking for help really is a sign of strength. In this podcast we chat about:When Drapes realised that something was going on with his mental health and what some of the warning signs wereHow he managed to return to MasterChef and what he did differently to support his mental healthHow his struggles with his mental health has influenced his parenting, and how they speak about mental health challenges with the kidsWhat it is like being the partner of someone going through a severe mental health crisisThe things that Drapes found to help him see the way out...and so much moreYou can connect with Brent on instagramIf you or someone you know is in crisis and needs help now, call triple zero (000). Are you looking for the current cost of renovating or building a new house in Brisbane, South East Qld or Northern NSW, Australia in 2024? In this episode you'll find out the current square meter rates for new custom construction. I talk to a building cost estimator and find out the cost of house construction in 2024 and what's forecast to happen in 2025.If this is your first episode, I recommend you go back and listen from the beginning of the season because everything builds on the episode before. At the very least, please listen to Episode 4. What are square metre rates? so you understand what they are and most importantly, when they're used by inexperienced people, they can lead to very inaccurate results! The information covered in this episode on current square metre rates is for education only.I'll be talking to building cost estimator David Knight from Total Estimating Services in Brisbane.INTERVIEW QUESTIONS00:00 Introduction01:30 How much does it cost to renovate or build a new house in Brisbane in 2024?05:55 What are square metre rates?07:23 What is the difference in build quality between lower and higher cost houses?12:07 How much does it cost to renovate or build a new house in South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales in 2024?14:15 What influences are affecting building costs?16:02 Can you suggest any ways to keep costs down?20:43 What materials have increased in cost in recent times?21:33 Is it more cost effective to renovate, or demolish and build a new house?24:35 How much cost do environmental initiatives add: Passiv Haus, double glazing, three phase power, solar ? 25:22 Are you seeing more environmental initiatives incorporated in houses in 2024?27:27 What cost escalation are you expecting into 2025?30:01 Key Points SummaryKEY POINTS SUMMARYWe covered so much information in this episode, but I just want to draw your attention to three main points.1. The first point was the wide range of costs to build custom, mid-range quality houses in the current market, which varied from around $3,000 up to over $6,000 per square metre.I predominantly work on residential renovations two storeys in inner Brisbane, which is quite sloped. So the fact that you could build on a flat block, a single story building for so much less, was quite a surprise to me.It was important to note what did make those renovations in inner Brisbane to older houses so much more expensive that everything is custom. Every bit of timber has to be custom cut. Everything has to fit in unusual sizes for houses out of square and that's what adds to those prices compared to the new single level building on a flat site.2. The second point to make is that there's no easy way to get costs down. There's never one or two big items that you can just take out of a job and save those costs. Costs are always spread across the entire project, so you really have to go through everything and take out little bits through the entire job.A better way to deal with this is when you're designing and as you go through and you choose each item, make sure you choose an item that's within your...

Big week at Talk Birdie To Me HQ, plenty to discuss, and Mark is excited to be playing one of Nick's fave courses this week, Cathedral. We chat Ripper GC's LIV win in Singapore, second in a row for the Aussies. Hopeless last year, on fire this year, says Nick. The hopeless team now in LIV is the Majesticks. Nick and Mark discuss playing Sentosa - water always a factor. And we kick around how many majors Brooks Koepka will end up winning. Currently on 5, Nick & Mark reckon by the end of his career he'll have 8.Nick mentions the doco 'Duel in the Sun', Mark says that if you haven't seen it you are banned from listening to the pod until you do. And he wants to know what you think of it. Onto TPC Craig Ranch. Mark says it looked poor on TV, he's not a fan. Nick agrees. This inspires Nick's Top 5 for later in the show: his Top 5 worst courses on tour.Last week we discussed the Golf Digest Top 100 list, which Mark was unhappy about - specifically Cape Wickham being named #1. Today he doubles down saying that Cape Wickham is not even close to #1, and looks at the criteria used by Golf Digest. Mark feels it's too complex, needs to be simplified, and because of the spectacular outlook at Cape Wickham, that is why it got the nod. Nick wonders how consistently playable Cape Wickham is, given the winds on the island. On Thursday this week we'll have a bonus pod with Steve Keipert of Golf Digest to discuss the Top 100 list with him, get his rationale for the rankings, and give him an opportunity to respond to Marks comments last week.We chat about LIV Adelaide and how much it cost to put on. Following last weeks pod, Mark had a call from his mate James who works for LIV and says that he believes Mark's inside info on a couple of players leaving LIV to be incorrect. We'll get James on for a bonus pod at some point and get his thoughts.Top 5 from Nick on the worst courses on the PGA and European tours. Ouch!Lots of feedback, a few whacks this week, but we don't shy from that we're happy to cop a whack. We also realise we have a lack of prizes, and Mark has the idea to give away copies of his DVD which strangely didn't sell out - the ironically titled '87 ways to make golf simple'. And we need your input for pod listener Rob - what are the 'must play' courses for him in Northern NSW. Let us know and we'll read them out next week.Huge week in the PING global results from Nick, and Marks masterclass for watchMynumbers is on a flaw he discovered in his game last week.A huge thanks to our Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;& the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. Yes, we MUST create and make art in these difficult, “liminal” times. I reference Teju Cole and late 19th-century philosophers to make my case. I also answer: How do you stay sane and be of service? John Seed is a 78-year-old world-renowned Australian environmental educator, author, activist, artist and filmmaker. A recipient of the Australian government's Order of Australia medal, John is the founder and director of the Rainforest Information Centre and, since 1979, has been involved in 100s of campaigns and education initiatives that have protected remaining rainforests and helped humanity rethink our relationship with nature. John and his family first came to Australia as Jewish refugees who experienced incredible hardship and devastating loss during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. They went on to create a new life in Australia, where John's mother, Judy Cassab, went on to become one of Australia's most celebrated painters.  John also has an artistic flair, and he and his mother had an exhibition together during the final years of Judy's life. John has had a fascinating and adventurous path in life. After a short career in computing with IBM, John joined the hippy trail, travelling overland through Afghanistan and onto India, where he studied meditation before arriving back in Australia and co-founding an intentional community in Bundjalung Country,  and the Northern Rivers ‘rainbow region' of Northern NSW at Bodhi farm, which still exists to this day. It was here that John found his true calling, or it found him. As you're about to hear, at the time, outside of Indigenous culture, there was little respect or appreciation for the value of rainforests, and they were being destroyed at an alarming rate. John joined locals in blockading the site at Terania Creek and said the experience at the time was as if nature was speaking to him. The protesters succeeded, and John went on to found the Rainforest Information Centre, a pioneering global organisation that has been instrumental in rainforest protection and conversation throughout Latin America, Cambodia, India, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and the South Pacific. His work also helped initiate the creation of the US Rainforest Action Network.John has written and lectured extensively on the concept of deep ecology. With Joanna Macy, Pat Fleming and Professor Arne Naess, he wrote "Thinking Like a Mountain - Towards a Council of All Beings" which has been translated into 12 languages including Korean and Tibetan. In 1987 he co-produced a television documentary, "EARTH FIRST!" for Australian national television about the struggle for the rainforests. In 2003 he spearheaded RIC's endangered species campaign and made the film "On The Brink" with David Attenborough, David Suzuki, Olivia Newton-John and Jack Thompson. You can find that via the Rainforest Information Centre online, as well as lots of other great videos, including one of John in conversation with Ram Dass in 1992.In 2021 – after an arduous and prolonged struggle with life-threatening cancer, John got back in the saddle and jumped straight into action. Some of his campaigning at this time helped lead to Ecuador's Constitutional Court ruling that mining in the Los Cedros Protected Forest is a violation of the constitutional rights of nature and is therefore prohibited in the forest. This has created an important national and worldwide precedent.More recently, John was involved in the Rising Tide blockade of coal ships leaving the world's Largest Coal Port in Newcastle, NSW. 3000 protesters gathered, and John was one of over 100 people in Kayaks arrested as part of a collective stand against Australia's continued investment in fossil fuels.   I should add that John is also an accomplished songwriter and has produced 5 albums of environmental songs, as well as numerous other environmental films.

Today my guest host and I will be sharing all about a “girl's” weekend the two of us had in the hinterland of the Byron Shire in the cute little village of Bangalow. Ok ok, I'll tell you who the guest host is - it is Mikaela from Easy Family Adventures who is actually my beautiful daughter – Miki. We try and have a mother-daughter weekend once a year together, but it has been a little difficult the last couple years. We chose Bangalow for our weekend for quite a few reasons – which we share in the podcast and I'm sure you will agree it was a great decision. We went on adventures into national parks, on very narrow windy roads to the top of a 100m gorge and waterfall. We explored the local village and many of the cafes, bars and restaurants and the famous Bangalow markets. It is a stunning part of NSW and only 15 minutes from the famous Byron Bay – so there is a lot to share. Stay listening to the end to hear where you can find out all about Mikaela's Easy Family Adventures and also hear her advice about the best places to go in the area if you have kids. Oh, and also, find out who or what is Saint Kevin and why we got a bit over seeing Saint Kevin several times a day.  I hope you enjoy this episode all about our fun girl's weekend – sorry Lyle – I'll let you back on the next episode.
