It demands a systematic approach to learning that begins with certainty in belief before moving to practice. This article explores the framework laid out in Imam Al-Ghazali's The 40 Principles of Our Religion, examining why aqidah (creed) forms the essential foundation upon which all other religious knowledge is built.The Three Dimensions of Islamic PracticeThe Islamic tradition recognises three fundamental dimensions of religious life: Islam, Iman, and Ihsan. This framework, derived from Hadith Jibreel (known as Umm al-Sunnah), provides the organisational structure for understanding our religion.Islam: The Science of PracticeIslam encompasses the ritualistic and practical aspects of religion, which later developed into the science of fiqh (jurisprudence). While four major schools of Islamic law are widely recognised today, the historical reality reveals far greater diversity. Scholars document more than 80 madhabs during the early period of Islamic intellectual development.The survival of a legal school depends not on the Imam's knowledge alone, but on the continuity of transmission. Consider the madhab of Imam Al-Layth ibn Sa'd: despite Imam Al-Shafi'i's assertion that he was “afqahu min Malik” (more knowledgeable in fiqh than Imam Malik), his school did not survive because his students failed to continue the work.The Importance of Unbroken TransmissionContemporary practitioners receive their understanding of Islamic law through an unbroken chain of transmission (isnad) extending back to the founding Imams. For Shafi'i scholars, this means a documented chain of teachers and students from the present day all the way to Imam Al-Shafi'i himself.This chain preserves not just the rulings, but the contextual understanding and technical terminology. Without this living transmission, legal texts become increasingly difficult to interpret accurately. Imam Al-Shafi'i's magnum opus, Al-Umm, illustrates this challenge. Despite its importance, this foundational text is rarely taught in traditional Islamic circles today because the specific terminological framework has not been preserved in the same way as later works.Legal terminology evolves across generations. Early scholars often used cautious language when discussing prohibitions, preferring phrases like “I dislike this” rather than definitively declaring something haram. This reflected both their taqwa (God-consciousness) and their reluctance to claim authority over matters of divine law. In communities with high levels of religious commitment, such subtle expressions were sufficient to guide behavior.As communities changed, scholars adapted their pedagogical approach. The terminology became more explicit and categorical, even as the underlying rulings often became more accommodating. Imam Al-Nawawi's strict position on Fatiha recitation—invalidating prayer for mispronouncing even a single letter—was later moderated by scholars like Imam Al-Haythami, who recognised that people from certain linguistic backgrounds might be physically unable to produce specific Arabic phonemes.This adaptation reflects not inconsistency, but the dynamic nature of fiqh as a living discipline that must address the reality of Muslim communities. A contemporary example: visiting a remote fishing village in Malaysia, one encounters Imams who are part-time dive masters or boat captains, leading congregations where the recitation quality varies significantly. The fiqh tradition accommodates this reality while maintaining standards appropriate to each context.Iman: The Science of BeliefIman addresses matters of belief, formalized into the science of Aqidah. Within this domain, several schools of thought emerged:Athari (textual): This approach relies primarily on scriptural authority. The Quran commands belief, therefore one believes. This circular reasoning functions effectively in majority-Muslim contexts where baseline assumptions about God's existence and the Quran's authority are shared cultural knowledge.Ash'ari and Maturidi: These schools, founded by Imam Abu Hassan Al-Ash'ari and Imam Mansur Al-Maturidi respectively, integrate revelation with rational argumentation. This synthesis became necessary as Muslims encountered diverse philosophical traditions and needed to defend their beliefs through reasoned discourse.Ihsan: The Science of Spiritual ExcellenceIhsan developed into the science of tasawuf (Islamic spirituality), which also encompasses multiple approaches:The Salaf approach emphasizes wara' (scrupulousness) and zuhud (asceticism). Note that “Salaf” refers to a historical period—the first three centuries of Islamic history—rather than the modern movement called “Salafism,” which emerged several centuries later.Imam Al-Ghazali championed tazkiyah (purification of the soul), focusing on removing spiritual diseases from the heart and cultivating praiseworthy character traits.The Falsafah (philosophical) school, represented most prominently by Ibn Arabi, engaged with metaphysical questions and influenced Islamic mystical thought, particularly in Ottoman territories.This study focuses primarily on the tazkiyah tradition, as it addresses the practical work of spiritual development most directly applicable to contemporary Muslims.

İbrahim el-Halebî (r.âleyh), Haleb-i Kebir adlı eserinde bunun müstehap olduğunu söylemiştir. Birinci rekâtında Fatiha-i Şerife'den sonra “Kafirun” suresi, ikinci rekâtında “İhlâs” suresi okunur. İbn Ebi Şeybe (r.âleyh), el-Musannef isimli eserinde bu konuyla ilgili olarak Peygamber (s.a.v.) Efendimiz'den naklen şu rivayete yer verir: “Sefere çıkmak isteyen kişinin, ailesine bırakacağı en hayırlı şey iki rekât namaz kılmaktır.” (İbn Ebi Şeybe)Enes b. Malik (r.a.)'den rivayete göre kendisi şöyle buyurdu: “Peygamber Efendimiz (s.a.v.) iki rekât namaz kılmadan konakladığı bir yerden ayrılmazdı.” (Sahih ibn Huzeyme) Yola çıkarken Allâh (c.c.) rızası için iki rekât namaz kılmak müstehap olduğu gibi yoldan döndüğünde de kerahat vakti değilse iki rekât namaz kılmak müstehaptır. Bu namazı yolculuğa çıkarken evde, yolculuktan döndükten sonra da mescitte kılmak daha faziletlidir. Yolculuğa çıkarken bu namazın kılınması; işlerini kolaylaştırması ve sağ salim, kazasız, belasız yuvasına kavuşturması için Allâhü Teâlâ Hazretlerine duâ etmek anlamı taşımaktadır. Yolculuktan döndükten sonra bu namazın kılınması ise; kişinin, eşine, dostuna, çoluk çocuğuna kavuştuğu için Allâhü Teâlâ Hazretlerine şükretmek anlamı taşımaktadır. Bunların yanı sıra bu namazın kılınmasında daha birçok hikmetler de vardır.(Sualli Cevaplı İslam Fıkhı, c.2, s.364-366)

Bu libasınızı çıkarıp içinizde olanı açığa vursaydınız benim için dahaiyi olurdu. Ve siz, içi başka, dışı başka olmaktan uzak olurdunuz. O'nunvarlığını hazır bilin; kulluğunuzu o niyetle yapın. Peygamber (S.A.) efendimiz şöyle buyuruyorlar: - «Allah'ıgörür gibi ibadet et; sen O'nu görmesen bile O seni görür.»Ey evlâd! Helâl yiyip içerek kalbini temizle. Rabbini bilirsin. Giydiğini, yediğini ve kalbini temiz tut. Bu yoldaniç âlemi temiz olanlar zümresine dâhil olabilirsin. Tasavvuf, safâdan gelir. Suf (kalın yün elbise) giymektengelmez. Tam mânası ile sofi olan, kalbini Allah sevgisi ile doldurur. Başka sevgilere yer vermez. Bu hâl birbaşka hâldir. Kolay elde edilecek cinsten değildir. Elbise değiştirmekle ve renk sarartmakla olmaz. Omuzeğmek, bu hâli veremez. Geçmiş büyüklerin hikâyesini dil gürültüsü ile anlatmak bu hâle vardıramaz.Parmak aralarına tesbih almak insanı o yola götüremez. O yola ileten şey, sadık kalple Allah'ı aramakla olur.Allah'ın size gönderdiği peygambere iyi bağlanınız. Ona bağlılığınız doğru olsun. O'na bağlılık, getirdiklerineuymakla olur. Peygamberin emirlerini ne kadar iyi yaparsanız uymanız o kadar iyi olur. İstanbul evliyâsının büyüklerinden. 1664 (H.1075) târihinde Tokat'ta doğdu. Mehmed Emîn Tokadi hazretleri, ilim tahsîline memleketinde başladı ve 1698 senesinde İstanbul'a geldi. Şeyhülislâm Mirzâzâde Muhammed Efendiden uzun müddet ders aldı. Sonra Mekke'de, İmamı Râbbani Hz.'nin oğlunun talebesi Ahmed Yekdest Cüryânî hazretlerinden tasavvuf ilmini öğrendi. İkinci Hicaz seferinde hadîs âlimlerinden Ahmed Nahlî'den hadîs ilmini öğrenip icâzet aldı. Bundan sonra kendisine Ravza-ı Mutahhare'de Resûlullah (s.a.v.) Efendimiz'in türbesinde türbedarlık verilmiştir. Bu göreve getirildiğinde, kavuştuğu nimete şükrederek; “İki cihan sultanının türbesinde bekçi ve hizmetçi oldun. Onun yüksek kapısının süpürgecisini, Mevla mahrum eylemez, zarara uğratmaz. Cihanın sultanı olan Resûlullah (s.a.v.)'in hizmetçisini kimse incitmez. Ey Emin! Sana müjdeler olsun! Resûlullah (s.a.v.) Efendimiz'in kapısında zahiren ve batınen hizmetçi olmakla şereflendin.'' diyerek Allâh'a duâ etmiştir. Mekke'de üç senelik eğitiminden sonra hocası artık İstanbul'a gitmesini istemişti. Kendisinden son bir arzusunun olup olmadığını sorduğunda, hocasına ''Benim vefatımdan sonra kabrime gelip bir Fatiha okuyanın vücudu cehennem ateşinde yanmasın.'' Bu istek karşısında hocası kendisine şunları söylemiştir. “Vasiyet et ki, vefatından sonra kabrini kolay bulunacak bir yere yapmasınlar. Virane bir yere defnetsinler. Kimse bilmesin. Ancak, nasibi olanlar gelip bulsun, duâ etsinler.'' 1745 târihinde İstanbul'da vefât etti. Kabr-i şerîfi, Unkapanı'na inen cadde ile Zeyrek Yokuşunun kesiştiği tepe üzerinde, Soğukkuyu Pîrî Paşa Medresesi kabristanındadır. Kendisini vesîle ederek, kabri başında yapılan duâ biiznilah müstecâbdır, makbûldür. Tanıyıp sevenler kabrini ziyâret ederek feyz almakta, murâdlarına kavuşmaktadırlar.**(Evliyalar Ansiklopedisi, s.1910)**

Bu üç isim ise temel üç bozguncu ahlâk olan şehvet, gazâb ve hevânın karşılığıdır. Buna göre üç isim, kötü ahlâkın üç esasının; Fâtiha Suresi'nin yedi ayeti de, yedi kötü huyun mukabilindedir. Sonra Kur'ân'ın tamamı sanki Fâtiha Suresi'nden çıkmış dallar budaklar gibidir. Aynı şekilde bütün kötü huylar da, bu yedi kötü huydan çıkan dallar ve budaklar gibidir. Kim “Elhâmdülillâh” derse, Allâh (c.c.)'a şükretmiş ve eldekiyle yetinmiş olur. Böylece de, şehveti yok olur.Kim O (c.c.)'un âlemlerin Râbbi olduğunu bilirse, bulamadığı ve elde edemediği şeyler hususundaki hırsı; elde ettiği şeyler hususundaki cimriliği zail olmuş olur. Böylece de ondan şehvet ve onun lezzetlerinin belâsı savuşmuş bulur. Kim Allâh (c.c.)'un Râhman ve Râhim olduğunu bildikten sonra, O (c.c.)'un din gününün sahibi de olduğunu bilirse gazâb ve öfkesi zail olur. Kim, “Yalnız sana ibâdet ederiz ve yalnız senden yardım isteriz” (Fatiha s. 5) derse, birincisiyle (Yalnız sana ibâdet ederiz) kibri; ikincisiyle de (Yalnız senden yardım isteriz) kendini beğenmesi yok olmuş olur. Böylece de ondan, gazâb ile ondan meydana gelmiş olan kibir ve kendini beğenme afeti savuşmuştur. “Bizi dosdoğru yola ilet!” (Fatiha s. 6) deyince de ondan hevâ şeytânı bertaraf olmuş olur. “Kendilerine nimetler verdiklerinin yoluna.” (Fatiha s. 7) deyince ise, kendisinden küfür ve şüphe gitmiş olur. “Kendilerine gazab olunmuşların ve sapıtmışların yoluna değil” (Fatiha s. 7) dediği zamansa, ondaki bidatler savuşmuş olur. Böylece, Fâtiha'nın bu yedi ayetinin bu yedi kötü ahlâkı defetmiş olduğu ortaya çıkar.(Fahruddîn Er-Râzî, Tefsîr-i Kebîr Mefâtîhu'l-Ğayb, c.1, s.374)
