Steven Jack Butala: Today's Jill Friday, she's going to talk about, it's too easy to get excited about a deal, and miss the red flags. Jill K DeWit: Kind of like dating, "He asked me out, I'm so excited. We went out to dinner, he didn't open a door for me, he ordered before I got there. He-" Steven Jack Butala: "He asked me for money." Jill K DeWit: "Asked me for money." That's so true. That's awesome. But the point is, "I gave him a hotbox, it's what he needed, he asked me on a second date, isn't this great? What do you mean there's a problem?" Steven Jack Butala: There's a guy version of this. Jill K DeWit: This is true, this is a true story. A dear friend of ours, I'm sure she does not listen to this, so I'm safe sharing this, we're not going to say names. Steven Jack Butala: Of course not. Jill K DeWit: Did multiple blind dates in a day, I don't know what she was doing, but she had two or three coffee dates in one day, and she was telling about the guy in the middle, that by the time she got there, he was sitting down, drinking his own coffee, never once offered to buy her a cup of coffee. She finally took it upon herself to say, "I'm going to go get a cup of coffee." And she, because she's the sweet thing, she just said, "Would you like another cup of coffee?" To which he said, "Yeah, sure." So she went and got her own coffee and brought him back to coffee, what does that say about that guy? And yes, that was the last time they communicated. She did not miss that as a red flag, and that's a huge red flag, it was funny, anyway. Steven Jack Butala: You know what happens to guys? Jill K DeWit: Oh, bring it. Steven Jack Butala: They, for whatever reason, starts to date a girl, and all their guy friends are like, "Dude, listen-" Jill K DeWit: Oh. Steven Jack Butala: "That girl's a mess, she treats you like crap." And his response is, "What are you talking about? We always have fun." And they're just blinded by the whole thing, and so fast forward 30 to 60 days later- Jill K DeWit: I thought you said years. Steven Jack Butala: Yeah, it could be years. Jill K DeWit: Yeah. Steven Jack Butala: Just a fire ball disaster- Jill K DeWit: Right. Steven Jack Butala: And it's all blown up, and he's like, "Yeah, you guys were right." I've been on both sides of that. I've been the victim of it, and the person saying, "Dude..." Jill K DeWit: Yeah, "You've got to see what we're seeing." Miss Flatbed Red has been creating art from the moment she could hold a pencil. She can draw big rigs like no one else. She keeps it between the lines but in a different way, creating compelling big rig artwork. Music won out over art at the college level, taking her to Bowling Green State University's College of Musical Arts for a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. Her main instrument was the trumpet, but she also played piano and studied conducting. All along the way, she continued to draw – mostly portraits in pencil. In 2012, Red relocated to London to pursue a Foundation Diploma from the University of the Arts London. She served as an apprentice to London-based portrait painter JHL Beattie where she learned classical painting and portraiture techniques. The Spring of 2016 brought Red (and her beloved cat, Tasha) back to Ohio. She married an avid historic truck-lover in May. In March 2017, she went with him to the Mid-America Truck Show, sketchbook in tow. While drawing her very first semi, she received her first truck commission. Since then, she has refined her technique and developed her unique style. “Flatbed Red” was born in the summer of 2017. She attends truck shows and creates on-location drawings. She also does custom studio drawings of trucks, pets, or almost anything else! This lady is super talented. You will be awestruck like we are. If you've missed red flags in a relationship, it's completely and totally okay. There is no shame in having missed the signs and suddenly realizing that they are there. Which is why I'm sharing what to keep in mind when you miss red flags. Lately, I've seen a lot of chatter about women starting to heal and then suddenly seeing the signs of a bad relationship that they'd previously missed. For so many women this noticing leads to feelings of shame and guilt that they didn't recognize the signs sooner. Stop right there. Instead of heading down the shame spiral, take a moment and be kind to yourself. So you didn't recognize those signs right off. You do now and that's what's important. Be kind, compassionate, and loving to yourself so that you can finally break the cycle. I also want you to know that there is nothing wrong with you. You are not what is broken. Even if you've chosen the same type of relationship over and over again, it's not your fault that you're being mistreated. Lastly, no matter how long you've been in the relationship or where you're at in life, you have the right to choose how to respond. It doesn't matter if you're 10 minutes, 10 days, or 10 years into it, you can change your future by making a new choice. You're on the path to healing and growth because you see the red flags. What choice will you make now that you know? In this episode: [00:35] Welcome back loved ones! [02:22] Have you ever felt regret or shame for missing red flags in relationships? [03:22] When you do notice those red flags, be kind, compassionate, and loving to yourself. [04:26] Do you know what being kind to yourself means? [07:28] I want you to do something different than you've ever done before. [09:36] There is nothing wrong with you. [13:06] Don't mistake self-accountability and taking ownership with self-deprecation. [13:38] No matter where you are or how long things have been happening, you get to choose how to respond. [15:27] As soon as you decide that you're ready to get out, that's all you need. The life we live... Being a human is hard! For me, music and movement are medicine, but the most powerful boost is having a supportive, authentic and hilarious group of people by your side for this wild slip slide ride! We all have to define success for ourselves... I must say I am feeling wildly successful these days, my heart is overflowing with love for life and my community... and BEATS!!! Saw @moontricks play in the Queen Elizabeth park yesterday evening and it was one of the most beautiful experiences I've had in Revelstoke... what a vibe! They played Soul Baby for their last track which reminded me of this old episode of Irie and Fiery from 2018. It was before I learned how to mix music, but the track selection is boss! This week we explore the folklore of the Dybbuk, a unique entity in Hebrew Mysticism, a disembodied human soul too wicked to be allowed to enter the afterlife, but unable to find refuge in this mortal plane. They seek a home in the bodies of unwitting victims, a parasite of the soul, whether human or animal. However, if needs be, they may take up place in something else. Some sort of a inorganic vessel, an object that can house the evil soul until a new host becomes available. In a story that starts before the second world war and continues even now, cursing pop stars and penniless immigrants alike, we see the Dybbuk moving even in this day. We hope you'll enjoy.

After some hazy sounds last week, we're altogether more upbeat this week. You wouldn't guess so with the opening track from Sax droner Colin Stetson, but with tracks from Miss Red, Moor Mother, Ramson Badbonez, and lost disco cats Teakwood, there's plenty in here to get you going.
This week The Quietus Hour begins with a John Doran who isn't quite as he seems. What is that high-pitched voice, the sound of innocence? On this week's programme we bring you some of our favourite new music from Darren Hayman, Factory Floor, Nails, Loose Meat, Cats Eyes, Warmduscher, Novelist, Miss Red and Cats Eyes, as well as the usual look at the pertinent news reports of the moment AND The Persuader. Plus corned-beef-grade chat about the things that might lurk behind that mysterious third door that always seems to be in rooms in budget hotel chains. Remember that we're now live streaming the recording of these programmes via The Quietus' facebook page - go and like that to have us appearing in your lives every Wednesday around lunchtime, whether you want us there or not.
