Becca Brown is a Harvard graduate who worked her way up the ladder at Goldman Sachs, eventually landing a Chief of Staff position in London. Then she left it all behind. Today, Becca is the co-founder of SoleMates shoe and foot care products, along with former classmate and Goldman Sachs colleague Monica Ferguson. They pitched their flagship product, the SoleMates High Heel Protector that keeps heels from sinking into grass or getting stuck in grates or cracks, on Season 8, Episode 4 of Shark Tank and hooked a deal with Robert Herjavec. Although Becca and her partner were already very experienced businesswomen, they took extra steps to ensure a successful pitch on the show. They hired a formal media trainer to help them with a game plan, key talking points, and how to thoroughly answer questions while guiding all conversations back to the key points they wanted to convey. They also held rapid-fire Q&A sessions with their team a few days a week for months before their appearance on the show. "Know your message, know how you want to communicate it, and keep reinforcing it" is one of Becca's best pieces of advice, but she stresses that without authenticity, it will all fall flat. Be sure to check out this episode of my Lessons From The Tank podcast for more business wisdom from Becca. Today SoleMates are carried in Nordstrom, DSW, and David's Bridal stores worldwide and on major e-commerce sites like Amazon and Zappos. Celebrities such as Oprah, Viola Davis, and Carrie Underwood are happy SoleMates customers! Our society tells us that we are supposed to look, act, and be a certain way. But the reality is that a majority of us do not fit into those ideal molds. And half of the people that do, are faking it. Stacy Sorgen has been a health and fitness professional for well over a decade, and she does not fit the mold. She had to carve her own path in one of the most judgmental industries there is. I've coached runners for 15+ years and served as Head Coach for SoleMates for GOTRPS for 5 years. I hold Yoga Teacher Certification RYT200 (2015), STOTT Pilates Mat-based practice training (2010), and a certification as a Holistic Health Coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (2013). I completed the 9 month Body Trust Project: School for Unlearning in 2021 and the Promoting Body Trust in Your Work for Practitioners in 2022, both hosted by Be Nourished. In July 2022 I successfully completed a 9 month Process-Oriented Facilitation (somatic interventions) program led by David Bedrick, JD, Dipl PW. Most recently I completed EXOS education's course, “The Applied Neuroscience of Peak Performance”. I'm currently pursuing the GGS-1 Women's Coaching Specialist Certification with additional study regarding movement and PCOS, strength training specific to Menopause, and pre/post-natal considerations for movement. When it comes down to it, I'm really just a queer, anxious, fat cis woman who grew up in a suburb of Chicago. I now live in Seattle, WA with my incredibly patient and kind wife of 12 years (almost 13 years) and our 3 dogs; Oliver (Boxador), Pumpkin (Italian Greyhound/Chihuaua), and Emmie (Chihuahua). Would you believe me if I told you that my wife and I met on Craigslist? Lol. I looooove live music, random acts of kindness, paddle boarding on Lake Washington, and cozy nights watching some sort of trashy television. I love movement in many different forms and I do the work that I do because I'm passionate about it – and I love to use that passion for movement to support others. I love triathlons, a really good slice of pizza, saying hello to every dog I meet – ever, and reading trashy books on the beach.

128 | Becca Brown Teaches Us to Serve Pizza with Our Sales Pitch Does your pitch ever feel like it’s falling flat? Becca Brown, the cofounder of Solemates, a brand of footwear solutions and accessories. Known for their flagship product that was featured on Shark Tank (a patented high heel cap that prevents high heels from sinking into grass and getting damaged), they make products that make you more comfortable in your shoes. Solemates was born out of personal necessity - they were tired of ruining their shoes! Becca has a passion for entrepreneurship and loves supporting other aspiring entrepreneurs achieve their dreams. Have you ever watched the movie Hitch? I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I do love movies! I was recently on a plane and ended up watching Hitch. In this movie, Will Smith stars as a dating coach. One of his clients wants to get the attention of the woman he likes and calls on Hitch to help. Together, they study the woman: what does she like? What is important to her? What will speak to her? Hitch isn’t there to make them fall in love. If you could call a relationship a fire, Hitch was the one to help them find that spark, to know if it truly would catch. The research that Hitch and his clients did helped them to be able to light that spark and see what would happen. As we’re pitching investors, customers, and brands, we need to find how to light that spark, and sometimes, it requires an extra level of creativity. This week’s guest on Success Unfiltered, Becca Brown, is the co-founder of Solemates, a line of shoe accessories specifically designed to keep high heels from sinking into the grass. When Becca was exploring creative ways to be carried in David’s Bridal, she ended up catching the approval of Oprah instead! How did she get their attention? You’ll have to listen to find out! HINT! It has to do with Pizza! Get on that elevator with confidence and tell the world what you do with style. Grab my FREE Guide 3 Steps To ROCK Your Pitch (And Get More Sales)! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Becca Brown, Shark Tank vet of the month. Becca describes Solemates, her brand of shoe accessories to help keep high heels from sinking when walking on grass. Becca and her business partner, Monica, came up with the idea when at Columbia Business School. For a class project, they presented the idea and the business plan. The retail expert giving feedback said that NO one would be interested in putting an ugly piece of plastic on a high heel. It was hurtful and disappointing to hear that, especially at the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey, but Becca and Monica decided to turn that NO into fuel to keep themselves going! “To offset disappointment, go back to basics. Figure out what things you can take personal satisfaction and confidence off of on a daily basis. It sounds cliche, but know yourself.” ~ Becca Brown “Knowing yourself doesn’t make you bulletproof against rejections because you’re human. It just gives you the tools to be able to get back to that confident base.” ~ Becca Brown Becca shares about her Shark Tank experience, and how it was surprising that the first Shark to say NO was the woman who wore high heels. Preparation was the key to staying calm and cool and collected in the face of rejection. Becca and Monica took media training before they appeared on Shark Tank: the goal was to learn how to be calm when uncomfortable, and they were equipped to handle whatever came their way. One particular key point was to be mindful of facial expressions, especially their resting expression. Some of the first customers of Solemates were bridal boutiques. They had their sights set on David’s Bridal, but it was difficult to get into stores like David’s Bridal. They had to come up with a persuasive sales pitch to get the attention of David’s Bridal, so they sought out bridal shows, other retailers, and “confidence builders.” Every situation requires a different approach, Becca shares. In order to stand out, you can’t use a one size fits all way of doing things. Don’t be afraid to use common interests to connect: if you wanted to connect with Becca, you’d want to talk about cycling because she shares so much about her love for cycling. Born to a Nigerian father and Ivorian mother in Guymon, Oklahoma, Gladys Edeh has always been a lover of the arts right from the age of 13. Her love affair for film blossomed after watching the 1980’s movie classic, "The God's Must be Crazy" with her dad. Her dream was to attend film school and begin her life as a filmmaker, but her father had other plans and wanted her to pursue a degree that would provide better job prospects. She moved from Kano State, Nigeria to Atlanta, GA in 1995 and attained a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems with a minor in Film Studies at Kennesaw State University. Upon graduation, even though she worked in IT full time, she became an active member of the film community in the Atlanta area and participated in every film or video project she could find and performed in several roles such as a boom operator, background actor, production coordinator., production manager, etc. But in 2008, she formed KokoAtDawn Productions and produced her very first short film, ‘But Mamah’ which was screened at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema in Atlanta, GA during the 48 Hour Film Project that year. In 2009, the film got selected to be part of the ION Film Festival which was hosted in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. In subsequent years, she went on to produce fictional short films such as A Day in A Life, Go Fish, Lost Memory and Solemates. In 2012, she began to focus more on the documentary style of filmmaking which led to her directing, producing, filming and editing short form content for the web. This led to opportunities to capture celebrities such as Afrobeats singer and songwriter Lagbaja, AfroJazz/Folk Soul artist, Tosinger, British-Nigerian actor Wale Ojo, and Deyemi Okanlawon, a Nollywood Actor, and a host of other artists. Her latest short film, Mr. Gele: The Man.The Story. The Craft gave her access to profile the talented African headgear mastermind, Mr. Hakeem Oluwasegun Olaleye, also referred to as Segun Gele. “Mr. Gele” which is currently in the film festival circuit has been an official selection in the Sidewalk Film Festival, Cleveland Film Festival, African World Film Festival, CineOdyssey Film Festival, African New York Film Festival and the BronzeLens Film Festival where it received a nomination for Best Short in the Short Documentary category. It is also now airing on the Africa's first Global Black Entertainment & Lifestyle network, EbonyLife TV to over 49 countries in Africa. As a filmmaker with an African heritage, one of her goals is to produce documentaries that showcase the multifaceted lifestyles and untold stories of Africans living in the diaspora. Her films are meant to capture, celebrate and share these stories that normally do not get the light of day on the global stage. She is currently working on creating a 13-episode documentary TV series, a fictional short film and a feature documentary. Gladys Edeh has been a resident of Atlanta, Georgia for over 20 years and currently lives with her husband and two kids.

Jim and Cheryl Brown Jim and Cheryl Brown inspire each other to overcome injury and age to continue their love of running. Through The Running Lifestyle Show's suggestions, they've found new ways to keep on running. Find out why it was like a reset button for both of them to go from frequently running to being restricted. Learn how they got back into running (using 4-1 intervals). Discover why they changed their fueling strategies. Hear why they urge runners not to be afraid to play around with fuel and different running strategies. Learn a key strategy so that you don't start off a race too fast during a race. Hear about their experience with the Hot Chocolate 15K. They performed nearly the same post-injury, so tune in to learn how! Find out about their upcoming races like the Soldier Field 10 Mile together, and Cheryl is running the Tinkerbell Half Marathon with their daughter, Amanda, who uses the run-walk method. Runner of the Week Jim Brown, who went through hip resurfacing surgery, talks about the part of running that speaks to him, advice for new runners, and his first half marathon experience. Jim started running during his time in the Marine Corps (where running equaled pain and punishment for him). After fifteen years of not running, he was overweight and needed to take control of his life. He lost weight and was invited to run a half marathon. He had never run more than three miles, so this was a new challenge for him. He downloaded Hal Higdon's Half Marathon Novice 2 program and started training. The night before his first half, his friend Scott Johnson offered to help support him during the race. Jim offers advice for someone who's thinking about running or who has just started running. This week's Runner of the Week is sponsored by Sports Suds. Are your clothes sweaty and stinky? Give yourself or a loved one the gift of Sports Suds, which is a laundry detergent that has no perfumes or dyes, is safe for septic systems, and gets clothes totally clean. Get a 25% discount at www.sportssuds.com by entering code RUNLIFE at checkout. Mike Clarke Mike Clarke discusses the two charities that the Big Beach Marathon supports. Charity 1: Can'd Aid is Oscar Blues Brewery's charity that supports local organizations. A portion of the proceeds from registration goes to Can'd Aid. Charity 2: Operation ReConnect gives soldiers in combat—and their families—a week's vacation when they come home.
