A lightning strike is more likely than the freak accident that took away months of Eduardo Garcia’s life and most of his left arm. But that fateful accident also left something behind: a second chance. If you haven’t seen the award-winning film “Charged,” watch it before listening to this podcast. The remarkable documentary tracks chef Eduardo Garcia before, during, and after a near-impossible accident in which he unwittingly touched a live, exposed electrical junction box. After 2,400 V entered and exited his body in an instant, Garcia was left on the brink of death. But that story, told so well in the film, was just the beginning. Garcia sat down with us to talk about survival and life after both the initial struggle and surprising fame have abated. Garcia now works with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, owns his own food brand (shout out to Montana Mex), and travels for speaking engagements (see his TED Talk here). He’s also an avid outdoorsman in the hunt, fish, run, hike, and surf spaces. Oh, and he hosts a cooking series. Clearly, nearly dying hasn’t put a stop to his living. That’s the story Garcia wants to share — and it’s a great listen. If you learn nothing else from this episode, remember to up your Cinco de Mayo game: Buy a tortilla press and some heirloom corn and make your own tortillas — Eduardo said so.

Eduardo Garcia is a professional Chef who owns retail food brand Montana Mex, a Mexican inspired line of Organic, NON-GMO condiment sauces, seasonings, and Avocado oil. He is known as the "bionic chef" because he cooks with a prosthetic left arm, the result of an accident while hunting in 2011. His story is the subject of the feature-length documentary Charged. Eduardo is an avid outdoorsman, fisherman, hunter, triathlete, and motivational speaker. After becoming the first blind climber to summit Mt. Everest, Erik Weihenmayer turned his focus to an entirely different kind of challenge: He learned to kayak and decided to attempt to paddle the length of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. It was the next chapter in Weihenmayer’s quest for presence, independence, and self-agency — things hard to achieve without sight. As The Weight of Water chronicles, the trip was much more than an adventure athlete notching another accomplishment in his belt. Weihenmayer joins a team of guides and new friends — including fellow blind kayaker Lonnie Bedwell, an absolute inspiration in his own right — on an emotionally weighted journey down one of America’s most iconic canyons. As they paddle, they confront loss, fear, and anxiety. They exemplify what people can achieve — and overcome — through selflessness, teamwork, and courage. And they let the river unlock its priceless lessons. The result is a triumph.Together, Erik and Eduardo discuss their adversities and what they have learned along the way.Resources:Read more about Eduardo and pick up some Montana Mex goodsWatch Charged on Amazon, iTunes, or VimeoWatch Weight of Water on Amazon Prime or iTunes Read Jeff Evan’s book: Climbing Through Storms

My guest is Eduardo Garcia. Eduardo is chef, entrepreneur, filmmaker, outdoorsman and philanthropist. I came across this story when I was checking out this amazing video series by Yeti called "The Hungry Life." I started to dig in and it took me down this amazing rabbit hole of inspiration and incredible stories. And great food too. Listen To The Podcast: Resources: www.montanamex.com www.chefeduardo.com www.chargedfilm.com Instagram: @chefeduardogarcia, @montanamex Mitch: The short version is that he grew up in Montana hunting, hiking, exploring and at about the age of 15 started to work at local restaurants. He uncovered this love for creating amazing food. He went on to culinary school, wound up becoming a chef for the uber wealthy on yachts and in private homes, pretty cool. But after about 11 years he decided to come back home and launch a natural foods company called “Montana Mex” with his friends. But around that same time tragedy struck and I want him to tell you the story himself. But needless to say he battled back from some incredible odds. And when you hear the story you will know exactly what I'm talking about. Incredible odds sells it short. But Ed not only survived but he's thrived. He's created this incredible life. He is truly living the epitome of the dream think do life. So I had to have him on. I can't wait for this episode. So let's get to this. Mitch: Eduardo, welcome to DTD. Eduardo: Hey Mitch, I'm excited to be here. I'm super ready. Mitch: Exactly I love it. And you are sitting outside beautiful Bozeman, Montana where I used to live. So once I found that out I'm like oh my gosh... He's got to be on dream think do. I just wanted to come to your house though and do the interview. So we'll do that next week. Eduardo: Next time. Mitch: Yeah, exactly right. I love it. So you grew up in Montana. Did you grow up with a love for the outdoors or was that something that came on later in life? Eduardo: Yeah. I think when we moved to Montana I was six years old and it's kind of one of those things I think there's nature and nurture and where I was living was mountains and four distinct seasons. Yellowstone River a stones throw away and it was my sandbox. So I had no other options nor did I know any better and then of course through programs like Boy Scouts of America and then your community and your friends and your peers, you grow up in the outdoors. You grow up skiing. You grow up hiking. You grow up fishing. You grow up. This is your hood. This is the peaks, the valleys, the streams, the meadows of the Rocky Mountain west. Mitch: Yeah. And then you just dive in and have at it, right? Eduardo: Yeah you have to. They always say to live in a place like Montana especially you know if you do not take advantage or engage with the outdoors in some way not only are you missing out on one of the greatest boons of being in a place like this geographically, but you're probably going bonkers. Because there's nothing to do here. Mitch: Exactly right. Eduardo: And I mean from an outdoors man's perspective, I have a calendar that I call my recreational calendar and it's every month of the year this is where my focus is from an outdoor perspective. Mitch: And doing activities outside different types of activities and that kind of thing. Eduardo: Yeah. You know snowboarding and snow sports, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, picking up antlers, mushroom foraging, fly fishing, floating the rivers to then hunting in the fall, putting the garden away, and then all of a sudden you're back into winter and snow sports. So it's like. Mitch: Yeah I'll never forget we lived out there for a number of years. We had a friend visit and he showed up on a Friday morning and that night my wife got home from work and I said, “What do you want to do?” and he's like, “Well what do you guys want to do?” I said,, “You want to go to the mountains. He's like yes.
In this episode of Unspoken, Ruthie and Miles interview Eduardo Garcia — a human being who embodies a kind of peace and tranquility that you cannot manufacture. If you have not heard his story, you will want to listen to this interview and then quickly watch his documentary, “Charged”. Eduardo Garcia is a man of many talents including being a chef, outdoorsman, athlete and motivational speaker & the co-founder of a national food brand, Montana Mex a clean label condiment brand. During a Montana backcountry hike in October 2011, Eduardo was electrocuted by a buried high voltage power source, where he suffered extensive, life-threatening injuries and had to have four ribs, his left hand and forearm amputated. This eventually lead to the creation of “Charged” He is also working on a number of media projects including “A Hungry Life” a tv concept which follows him into the wild places of the world as he creates exceptional food over a campfire. Learn more about Eduardo Garcia's work and passion here.
“Wake up every morning empowered by where you've been and encouraged by the curiosity, possibility and wonderlust of where you're about to go.”Eduardo GarciaImagine yourself alone in the Montana backcountry. You're doing what you love — camping, hiking and simply enjoying the wilderness — when you stumble upon a rusted old relic. An old oil drum perhaps. Curious, you approach and peer inside to discover the remnants of a long-dead black bear cub. You set down your backpack and reach inside to further investigate. What happened next would forever alter the life of this week’s guest – a flash of electricity so intense it should have instantly killed this young man of 30. 2400 volts that seared his insides, utterly destroyed his left arm, left his body with 9 severe exit wounds and delivered him to the ICU little more than a dead man with a heartbeat.Eduardo Garcia would spend 48 days in intensive care. He would undergo 21 surgeries that would claim four ribs, a ton of muscle mass, and even his left arm. On top of everything else, he would be diagnosed with testicular cancer. But against all odds, Eduardo survived.A chef by trade, Eduardo began his career at 15 before attending culinary school. He spent the next decade traveling the world cooking for various high-end people on various high-end yachts. In 2011, he decided to return home to Montana to start Montana Mex, a food company that today produces a line of fine organic & non-GMO sauces and seasonings. But the tragic accident that would soon befall Eduardo would ultimately set his life on a new and unforeseen trajectory beyond his wildest imagination.Dubbed the Bionic Chef, I first came across Eduardo's story by way of Charged*, a feature-length documentary that elegantly chronicles the spirit of what this man lost but more importantly, what he found. It's a survival story built on the foundations of love and forgiveness. It's about building stronger relationships and a better life after tragedy. And it's about finding your best self so you can live life fully charged.Today I have the great privilege of sharing Eduardo's incredible story. It's an inspirational tale of facing and overcoming extraordinary adversity. And it's about the power of attitude to persevere. But more than anything, it's about one man's journey to wholeness — and ultimately, redemption. For the visually inclined, you can watch our entire conversation on YouTube here: bit.ly/richandeduardoI sincerely hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Soundcloud | Stitcher | See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this episode, Adam is joined by Chef Eduardo Garcia. Many of you may have heard of Eduardo via his film, CHARGED: THE EDUARDO GARCIA STORY, released late last year. It is a story of survival, relationships and living life to the fullest. If you have not seen this film, it is a true must watch. Eduardo’s story is interesting to say the least. After being electrocuted by 2400 volts of electricity in a freak hunting accident, Eduardo’s life was forever changed. The film is, outwardly, about that unfortunate event but more importantly covers Eduardo's life journey before and after the accident. From his paradoxically challenging and charmed life leading up to the accident to the unbelievably difficult and inspirational recovery process he had to endure, this is a story that will impact you. Adam and Eduardo dive into a host of sub-themes covered in the film, and there is no question that this podcast is a heavy and deep exploration of what it means to experience life in the fullest sense, regardless of the cards you are dealt. Eduardo is also a very avid hunter and outdoorsman in general, on top of being a highly accomplished chef and businessman. He has worked with some of the brands we work with, like Mystery Ranch and Schnee’s, for quite some time. He is a Brand Ambassador for Mystery Ranch and, in my opinion, they couldn’t have asked for a better ambassador to represent their company and our community.
