Calton Hill, Edinburgh reimagined by Vlad Suppish. "The original piece immediately caught my attention - melancholic and wistful, a truly rich sonic source, open for interpretations. Plans for it were epic at first but the compositional process became rather an exercise in reductionism. "As a main tool were used Make Noise's Morphagene. Despite of dazzling possibilities it has I've decided to keep everything relatively simple, intuitive and immediate. Prepared loops on Morphagene were triggered by hand with Pressure Points while processing it in real time. "The recording process felt more like a live recording. A flute was added later as a cherry on top of the most climactic moment. "The final piece is not perfect. Mistakes were plentiful but sometimes in emphasizing them is the character and a beauty of the piece. "So honor thy failures as a hidden intention."

For my audience, Anthony Rolando probably needs no introduction. As the product designer at Make Noise Music, his work is found in almost every modular system you’ll run across. From his earliest designs (such as the Maths) to his latest (like the Morphagene), he’s helping to define the future of modular systems. Recently, Make Noise has come out with a new standalone device – the Strega. This is a remarkable system-in-a-box that includes integrated effects and tone generation, and is particularly focused on live play. As a collaboration with Alessandro Cortini, the Strega is a deep, opinionated view on noise/sound manipulation, and launches a new perspective on what an ‘instrument’ is all about. In our discussion, we dive into depth on the development of the Strega, Tony’s personal musical adventures, and a bunch of follow-up from our previous podcast (https://artmusictech.libsyn.com/podcast-152-tony-rolando-of-make-noise). As with any discussion with Tony, it was revealing, challenging and inspiring. Enjoy! Transcription available at http://www.darwingrosse.com/AMT/transcript-0352.html

In our follow-up episode to part 1, we keep the conversation going with Tom Erbe. In part 2, Tom talks about making music, patience in understanding art, what he's currently working on, and we listen to a clip from his new version of James Tenney's: For Ann (rising). Prepare your ears... This is episode 2 in a 2-part series. Bio: Tom Erbe has had an important role in American experimental and electronic music over the last 30 years. In addition to creating the pioneering and widely used program SoundHack and many audio plugins, he is one of the most sought after and respected sound engineers for contemporary music. Recent activities include performing the first new version of John Cage’s “Williams Mix” since it’s original interpretation in 1952, and developing five new Eurorack synthesizer modules for Make Noise Music: the Echophon, the Erbe-Verb, the tELHARMONIC, the Morphagene, and the Mimeophon. Kurt Kurasaki is an electronic music composer based in Northern California. While his preferred instruments are the vintage Buchla Music Easel and Buchla 200/200e system, he is versed in wide array of synthesizers and electronic composition techniques. Kurt’s professional associations include work with notable music companies such as Dave Smith Instruments, Rossum Electro-Music, and Propellerhead Software. Recently he has focused his efforts into producing and recording experimental works that incorporate modular synthesizers and prepared tape materials. The piece presented here is a live recording at the “Modular On The Spot” event held during Moogfest on May 21, 2017 in Durham, North Carolina. The composition, titled Buchla Abstractions for Morphagene, is based on recordings created with Buchla synthesizers, but is performed on a Eurorack system comprised of Rossum Electro-Music, Make Noise, and Audio Damage Modules.
