The jazz standard “Makin' Whoopee” — introduced in a 1928 stage musical with a performance by legendary song-and-dance man Eddie Cantor — is built around the sassiest words ever penned by one of the great lyricists of the Roarin' Twenties.Gus Kahn was born in 1886 in Bruschied, Germany, son of a cattle farmer who emigrated to the United States four years later and moved his family to Chicago. After graduating from high school, Gus worked as a clerk in a mail order business before launching one of the most successful and prolific careers on Tin Pan Alley. In the next 30 years, Kahn contributed to an extraordinary number of Great American Songbook numbers. Like what? you say. Like “Pretty Baby,” “Ain't We Got Fun?,” “Carolina in the Morning,” “Toot, Toot, Tootsie *Goo' Bye!),” “Yes Sir, That's My Baby,” “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me.”No wonder that in 1951 — 10 years after his death — Gus was featured in a popular movie about his life. “I'll See You in My Dreams” starred Danny Thomas as Kahn opposite Doris Day as Gus's wife, Grace LeBoy. The film was a serious hit, Warner Brothers' second-highest-grossing film of the entire year.Walter DonaldsonGus had a life-long friendship with his main collaborator, composer Walter Donaldson (who you may remember from our earlier post about their “My Blue Heaven.”) Their first collaboration was “My Buddy” in 1922. They went on to compose over one hundred songs together. In 1928, the pair composed all the tunes for a show called “Whoopee!” based on Owen Davis's play, “The Nervous Wreck.” Included in the score was “Makin' Whoopee,” the winking-est and nodding-est number of the season. The title refers to love and marriage. Quickly, though, "making whoopee" becoming a euphemism for recreational love making. Gus's lyrics begin with a sardonic celebration of a wedding (“another bride, another June … a lot of shoes, a lot of rice”), then moves on to the love nest and babies and responsibilities (‘washing dishes and baby clothes, he's so ambitious he even sews…) but then to affairs and confrontations, possible divorce, a visit to a judge…The 1928 show was successful enough, but oh, that song! In the same year that it debuted on Broadway, it also was recorded Bing Crosby and Paul Whiteman and the next year by Rudy Vallée. Then in the 1950s, after that Danny Thomas / Doris Day movie, the song was back in a big way, with versions by Nat King Cole, Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald. And that isn't the end. More recently, it has been recorded Dr. John and Rickie Lee Jones, by Cyndi Lauper and Tony Bennett, by Rod Stewart and Elton John. Our Take on the TuneHonestly, we don't know how a band that's been around for nearly half a century — one that has a special love for novelty and good-time tunes of the 1920s and ‘30s — could have missed this one.But the fact is it's only now that The Flood started playing around with this classic. Guess it took our newest members — Veezy Coffman and Danny Cox — to open our ears to it. We're sure glad they did. This is a public episode. What a treat to have Freya Wolf on the show plus every song from her new album called "Just Another Day" was an exclusive to New Starz Show thanks Freya and Ross Hemsworth of Remote Highway. The album will be released April 29th 2022. Freya was born in Aberdare in South Wales in 1978 She lived in Aberdare, Swansea, Carmarthenshire raised alongside The Stereophonics and like so many Welsh people, was born with an amazing voice! She moved to Street in 2008 before travelling the UK for two years, with stays in London, Scotland, North and South Wales, Cornwall, Devon, before finally settling in Somerset. As a classical pianist she was inspired early on by Nina Simone and Beverly Craven. She then found a love for female soul singers. She says “I have varied tastes from rock to reggae, classical piano to drum and bass. However, my all-time favourite soul tracks are RESPECT by Aretha Franklin and My Baby Just Cares for Me by Nina Simone. My favourite track from other genres is Brighter Days by Hybrid Minds ft Charlotte Haining.” Freya writes and co-writes her own material including her first two singles This Man is Mine” and “Meet Me at 8” both of which she co-wrote with U.S. Songwriter's Hall of Fame member Ross Hemsworth. The single Red Roses (Are Never Enough) also co-written with Ross, attracted the interest of world-famous guitarist Marc Ribler who provided the solo and outro guitar work on the rack. FOUR of the tracks from the album, have already been picked up by two U.S. music publishing companies who specialise in placing music into films and TV series' through pitches on Broadjam! Freya's first three singles have had considerable global airplay but we believe the forthcoming single I CAME HERE TO DANCE could see her rocket into the public eye with yet more radio and media interviews planned and even senior management of online platforms such as TikTok are now showing a big interest in Freya! **Explicit Permission has been given by the artist and Remote Highway to play the songs and the interview ** --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/neil-clark10/message
“Wild is the Wind” é uma destas insólitas obras harmoniosamente coabitadas pelo sublime e o intolerável. Exageradamente humana, prodigiosamente bela. Estamos em 1966. On this episode of Baring It All with Call Me Adam, on the Broadway Podcast Network, I am recording at The Houdini Museum in NYC with writer, actress, and singer Laiona Michelle. After a triumphant debut in 2018 at the George Street Playhouse, of Laiona's original musical Little Girl Blue - The Nina Simone Musical, Laiona Michelle will be returning to George Street Playhouse for a one-night only concert to celebrate Black History Month & Women's History Month, paying special tribute to the life and music of the High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone. The evening will feature some of Nina's most iconic hits including "Feeling Good," "My Baby Just Cares," and "Little Girl Blue" + a selection of Broadway classics. ***Due to COVID-19 Pandemic An Evening with Laiona Michelle has been postponed. As soon as a new date is announced, I will post it here along with a ticket link.*** Laiona & I also discuss the projected 2021 NYC premiere of her original musical Little Girl Blue - The Nina Simone Musical as well as the development of her Broadway-bound original musical Mandela, a new musical developed in partnership with the Mandela Family, music & lyrics by brothers, Greg Dean Borowsky and Shaun Borowsky, and book by Laiona Michelle. Prior to her Broadway debut, Laiona had been on the road, cast in the first national tour of the musical, Book of Mormon, which won nine Tony Awards in 2011. Laiona’s passion as an actor took a different turn during the run of Amazing Grace, which was written by a first-time playwright. That story captivated the writer’s side of her. And what began with a thought, turned to obsession, and led to a re- discovery of her writing skills, one she now continues to perfect. In 2018, Little Girl Blue – The Nina Simone Musical made its way to the George Street Playhouse, where it had a limited run engagement and played to sold-out audiences, standing ovations and stellar reviews. She has since been commissioned by the Mandela estate to collaborate on a new, Broadway bound, Mandela Musical, based on the South African activist, imprisoned for 27-years, and who was eventually released to become that nation’s president. The musical features music and lyrics by Shaun and Greg Dean Borowsky, and book by Laiona Michelle. It is being produced in partnership with the Mandela family itself, and is scheduled for a New York theatrical – date to be announced. As an actor, she has been nominated for a number of awards including the Independent Reviewers of New England, Best Lead Actress award (2001, Stonewall Jackson’s House), Laiona is the recipient of the Barrymore and Carbonell Awards (2004, Constant Star), The NAACP Hollywood award (2005, Constant Star) and she was nominated for the Helen Hayes Award (2005, Yellowman). In addition to her stage work, Laiona has also made appearances on network and cable television in Showtime’s Lift, ABC’s All My Children, NBC’s Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: CI, The Blacklist as well as Amazon’s, Sneaky Pete (Bryan Cranston and Giovanni Ribisi).
A few weeks ago I was at one of my regular ukulele group meetups, and someone new turned up to play. He confidently walked in, introduced himself as Tom the Pom, and started playing with us. It didn’t take too long for me to decide that I had to get him on the podcast. He was only in Canberra for a couple of days, but agreed to record a conversation with me on the following evening. I’m glad I followed my instincts! Enjoy. Please support me on Patreon and get an exclusive Ukulele Is The New Black decal for your ukulele case!
