THE BEATMASTERS – WHO’S IN THE ACID HOUSE This episode of Turn The Beat Around paid tribute to one of the most inventive production teams to emerge from late‑80s London: The Beatmasters. Across the hour, we explored how Manda Glanfield, Paul Carter and Richard Walmsley stepped out of the commercial jingle world and helped shape the sound of early British house and hip‑house. The special traced their rise from underground club innovators to chart‑breaking hitmakers, revisiting genre‑defining singles including “Rok Da House,” “Burn It Up,” “Hey DJ / I Can't Dance…” and “Who's In The House.” We also spotlighted their transition into one of the UK's most in‑demand production teams, contributing to major releases for Pet Shop Boys, Tina Turner, Yazz and their chart‑topping work with The Shamen. Across the hour, we celebrated the trio's fearless fusion of rap, house, pop and rave energy — a sound that cracked open the UK charts and left a permanent mark on club culture. In this episdode, Michael welcomes his longtime friend Yazz Abdulla, previously a guest during the pandemic to discuss food delivery and dark kitchens. They reflect on Copenhagen Street Food's grassroots style, then focus on founder-led hospitality businesses: founders often stay emotionally attached, operate like self-employed workers, lack systems (ops, HR, marketing, supply chain), misunderstand cashflow, and fail to plan an exit; Yazz advises emotional detachment, self-leadership, discipline, rituals, and valuing time and peace over status. They discuss the “lost art of hospitality,” arguing technology and transactional service have eroded human connection, while Gen Z is highly influential and brands like Blank Street succeed by designing for Gen Z.AI is seen as useful for optimization but unable to replace the human element. They compare struggling UK hospitality—blaming poor adaptation and leadership—against UAE hospitality, where conflict briefly crushed tourism but decisive government support enabled recovery.Lodgify is the headline sponsor for the Hospitality Mavericks Podcast Show.Lodgify is an all-in-one hosting platform built on one promise, minimum hassle, maximum independence. Miles Davis' “Générique” floats in like he was blowing fog through his trumpet. It's a surreal, beautiful, late-night ode to the night itself and all its pain and delight. To stretch that feeling over an entire album, rather than three minutes, would be a Herculean task of skill and restraint. And yet, La Saboteuse exists. Yazz Ahmed's document of psychedelic, Bahraini-inspired Jazz feels and sounds like nothing else in its genre. In a decade that saw Jazz reborn and reimagined through the fertile chaos of Hip-hop, Minimalism, Afrobeat, Caribbean swing and Cuban rhythms, Ahmed crafted a myth of dream-like quality. So hear our interview with Yazz, read our thoughts on her work and see why it's the best of the 10s. “[Psychedelic music] means losing your mind, being totally captured by the music, going into a dream like state. ” — Yazz Ahmed

Cuando el House de Chicago infectó a todo el planeta, el Pop fué influenciado y nutrido por el mismo. "I approached and signed all of the first weird Warp acts." The Sheffield record producer and label cofounder discusses starting the UK label and the early days of bleep techno. Before Warp became the landmark label it is today, it was a Sheffield record store. Robert Gordon was an employee there in the early '80s, working alongside colleagues Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell, with whom he'd start the label in 1989. Listeners familiar with the contemporary UK techno landscape may associate Warp with luminaries like Aphex Twin and other names associated with IDM and bleep techno. It also released a lot of artists who were recording in a Sheffield studio called FON, which is where Robert Gordon found his footing even before starting Warp. In this Exchange—conducted by DJ, producer, CDR founder and Resident Advisor board member Tony Nwachukwu—Gordon talks about FON and laying the groundwork for the Sheffield scene. In 1985, he recalls, it was the first local commercial 24-track studio and attracted luminaries like David Bowie, Yazz and groups tied to post-punk band Cabaret Voltaire. More recently, it's produced work by 808 State, Nightmares On Wax and Sweet Exorcist. Gordon also reflects on FON's early days. It was foundational to the sound of the '00s and formed a tight-knit community around itself that eventually became intrinsic to a bigger musical movement. Although Gordon left Warp in 1991, his A&Ring for the label—along with his own productions and engineering assistance—defined its sound. Listen to their conversation in full.

In this episode, Richard Boon joins us to talk about his life in music, taking in the birth of Buzzcocks, the Smiths on Rough Trade and his time as "the world's coolest librarian" in Stoke Newington. The punk instigator takes us back to 1976, when he went to see the Sex Pistols live in High Wycombe together with a certain Howard Trafford and Peter McNeish. This shock to the system led to Richard inviting them to play his art studio in Reading, plus the near-mythological Lesser Free Trade Hall show that everyone in Manchester later claimed to have been at. Once Howard and Pete re-christened themselves Devoto and Shelley and formed Buzzcocks, Richard fell into managing the group and put out their seminal Spiral Scratch EP on his New Hormones label. We then ask Richard about his move to Rough Trade around the same time as he brought them the Smiths. Clips from Martin Aston's 1986 audio interview with Morrissey form the backdrop for a discussion of why the band were special, their reluctance to film music videos and their relationship with their fans.  Following discussion of featured writer Cath Carroll, whose early interview with Morrissey and Marr plus pieces on Linder and New Order round out the Manchester theme, Mark and Jasper finish up on library highlights including Sandy Bull, Yazz, the Spice Girls, and Lewis Capaldi. Many thanks to special guest Richard Boon. Please note that this episode was recorded before the death of Jane Birkin. Pieces discussed: Buzzcocks, Spiral Scratch, Pete Shelley audio, Morrissey audio, The Smiths, Linder, New Order, Sandy Bull, Van Morrison, Little Feat, Yazz, The Spice Girls, Pete Rugolo, Chuck Berry and Lewis Capaldi.

If you've been following us for a while or are a Gold Course member, than you should know the basics of our simple business model. In short, we are simply landlords on paper but through our marketing we provide affordable, cooperative housing to a number of different demographics. Veterans, Transitional Housing, Sober Living, Senior Housing, MHMR are just a few of the most common examples. Although many of our tenants do need services that require licensing and/or professional certifications, rather than provide those services ourselves, the tenants simply receive the services they need via outsourced medical professionals. This allows us to provide housing to ANY demographic that is need while avoiding all of the red tape, licensing, paperwork, and staffing required to provide medical services. If you've spent any amount of time online researching how to start a Group Home, chances are that the instructions you've found are how to start a LICENSED facility. As you know, this process can seem very confusing. There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to each business model. Our founder has chosen the unlicensed route because it was much simpler to start and to scale. He's able to run organizations of 10-20 homes with essentially 1 other employee. HOWEVER The biggest advantage to running an ALF (Assisted Licensed Facility) is the sheer amount of dollars that they bring in. Most Real Estate investors would snicker at Andy's profit and loss statements, suspecting them to be scams. If they saw the type of numbers Yazz did they would laugh him out of the room! The ROI is simply unbelievable. On the very conservative, lower end, Yazz's properties brought in ~10k/mo. That's the LOW END. And he ran 9 of them for 10 years. Do you see why he is retired now?? Yazz's story is truly inspiring. His parents migrated here from Cuba and got into the medical field. Yazz actually started in Aviation, but after that industry took a hit with 9/11, he fell into the family business. You have probably heard us say that "there is a lot of money in confusion" and after working with Yazz, of course we're finding out that the same motto rings true in the ALF industry. There are a number of bureaucrats, Real Estate agents, construction crews, sprinkler companies, lawyers and consultants that will happily suck your time, energy and CASH while getting an ALF started. We've had some Gold Course students literally lose 6 figures and years out of their life. We actually learned while recording this podcast, that Yazz was able to skip allllllllll of that BS and start his empire by leasing his first property with only $2,000 down. You will learn more on this 45 minute interview then you will spending months, if not YEARS doing your research online or going back and forth with government bureaucrats. Now imagine what it would be like to personally work with Yazz.... CLICK HERE for more information on that :)
