Grandparent carer turned author Nada Lubay joined Millsy at Midday host Steve Mills in the 6PR studios to discuss the inspiration and passion behind her new book, based in parts on her life as a grandparent. Silent Heroines focuses on the positives of grandparents and is full of humour, portraying them as a resilient, resourceful bunch of oldies not afraid to laugh at themselves and make fun of their circumstances. "Like many other grandparents in WA, we've stepped in to provide safety for the child," she told Millsy. "And then what you have to do, is just get on with your life... forget that you have retirement, forget troubles, you forget that you're married, and you just start parenting again." This Sunday is National Grandparents Day, an annual event to recognise and celebrate the contribution grandparents make to their families and the broader community.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And as a passionate supporter of the first responders of September 11 – Sherri recognizes this day as one “We Will Never Forget” with her thoughts on how her grandparents lived through Pearl Harbor and promised never to forget that tragedy and for her generation 9/11 is our day of remembrance. For Caregiver Wellness News, Sherri talks statistics on grandparents and caregiving and offers some key resources to help care for older loved ones. For our Well Home Design News, Sherri besides the new design trends talks about September National Emergency Preparedness Month and offers a free webinar for listeners on how families can prepare for natural and other disasters and emergency situations. Since September 11 is National Grandparents Day, Laura decided to do an episode about our parents, who are obviously the grandparents of our children who have died. Every year at this time I am reminded by letters I received about International Hug Day. This year, it is September 17th. It is rather interesting that it is a week later than Grandparents Day. The National Grandparents Day is the second Sunday in September every year. As a great grandmother and support person for the grandparents around the country, I'm becoming more aware each day that we are the "ancestors." There are so many things that only grandparents can contribute. They give of their talents and skills, are able to tell those family stories, and listen to their grandchildren with patience and unconditional love. A recent article I read mentioned that grandparents today are rearing their children's children at an alarming pace. Over 32 million American children live with their grandparents. This is an increase of nearly 40% In the past decade. Other statistics mentioned that grandparents spend $30 billion dollars annually on their grandchildren. This is through telephone calls, travel, restaurant meals, and gifts. Two thirds visit their grandchildren regularly. Even those who don't live nearby. Dr. T Berry Brazelton states, "Children who have the luxury of relationships with grandparents win out in all studies of child development. The opportunity to experience multiple models while learning about life adds significantly to the child's potential." Grandparents - have you hugged your grandchildren today? And grandchildren remember to give that special grandparent a hug, too. Warm Thought: The old are the precious gem in the center of the household. Chinese Proverb. Remember International Hug Day! Celebrating Grandparents on Grandparents Day has become a tradition for Olive Community Services. The initial celebration 3 years ago was a wonderful experience for all who attended. Events dictated that last year's celebration were conducted virtually. This year, the staff at Olive Community Services designed a hybrid event that is worth hearing about. Grandparents Day is a national holiday, signed by proclamation in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter. It falls each year on the Sunday following Labor Day coming about through the unrelenting 8 year campaign from one woman, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, who hailed roots from West Virginia. He and her husband Joseph L. McQuade had 15 children, 43 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. For most of her life Marion Lucille Herridon McQuade advocated for older adults and people who were isolated in their homes, known at that time as shut ins. Her advocacy and relentless efforts were recognized and 1971 she was elected Vice-Chair of the West Virginia Committee on Aging. This was followed by her appointment as a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging. In 1972, Her efforts on behalf of shut-ins was successful and in President Richard Nixon proclaimed a National Shut-in Day. Mrs. McQuade continued with her service in other capacities, among them; President of the Vocational Rehabilitation Foundation, Vice-President of the West Virginia Health Systems Agency, and was appointed to the Nursing Home Licensing Board. Mrs. McQuade envisioned Grandparents Day as one in which there were family get togethers, community events, and family reunions if need be. An interesting fact is that Grandparents Day does not have an apostrophe, as Mrs. McQuade did not want the day to belong to any one person but rather a day of community celebration. She also envisioned a day of intergenerational programming, which Generations United in Washington DC encourages for the entire week following the celebration of National Grandparents Day. Grandparents Day is integral to the philosophy of Olive Community Services; Respecting and honoring the older adults and their families and their community. The celebratory event was designed to bring to life everything that Mrs. Quade envisioned it to be. Listen in to learn about the Olive Community Services Grandparents Day event and learn what you can do for the Grandparents in your family and in our community.

Episode 36. A Song for Grandma and Grandpa by Johnny Prill https://www.nationalgrandparentsday.com/ https://www.facebook.com/nationalgrandparentsday https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnnyPrill A Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter in the folk-polka tradition, Johnny Prill has received numerous accolades for both his music and his volunteerism, which began when he was 12 years old performing with his accordion at local nursing homes. Except for the impact of COVID-19, Johnny Prill and his family have performed monthly at the Cortney Manor Nursing Home since 1986. Each year they host an annual Christmas Eve show that features four generations of the Prill family and a special Grandparents Day Celebration for the community. In addition to the Health Care Association of Michigan's presentation of its “Volunteer of The Year Award,” he has received shout-outs from former Jeopardy Host, the late Alex Trebek; U.S. Olympian Misty May-Treanor; American actresses and comedians Betty White and the late Phyllis Diller; American folk singer the late Pete Seeger; country singers the late Charlie Daniels and Barbara Mandrell; and Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell. Elected officials on the local, state, and federal levels also have honored Johnny Prill for his volunteer work to honor senior citizens and veterans. In 1982, he wrote “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa” to honor his grandparents. It has become the official song for National Grandparents Day, which is celebrated in the United States the first Sunday after Labor Day. I extend a heart-felt welcome to this incredible musician. ****** I had hoped to present my interview with Johnny Prill as a bonus episode on Grandparents Day along with announcing the winners of the Adventures with Grammy Essay Contest to celebrate both Gorgeous Grandma Day, which we celebrate every July 23, and National Grandparents Day, which will celebrate this year September 12. However, a bit of a snafu prevented the contest from happening this year. Watch for it in 2022. Because Johnny Prill gave us permission to play “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa” on the podcast, I present it now to honor and celebrate grandparents near and far. ****** Adventures with Grammy Newsletter To sign up, visit https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/7ZleyB4 You will receive a micro-book that provides directions for a super fun activity to do with your children and grandchildren! Well folks, another weekend in the books! Did you miss the most special of holiday's on Sunday? We here on the QT certainly didn't... For those who may not know, the Sunday after Labor Day is reserved for celebrating an amazing group of people in our lives - National Grandparents Day! What better time to share some memories relating to these special people. Whether it's preparing specially shaped pancakes, taking you to the store to buy whatever you want, or shooting some epic games of billiards, our grandparents leave an indelible impression on our lives. Grandparents are always there to pick us up and feed our souls. This one's for them!
Today's podcast is a special one for me. My guest today is my grandfather, Mel Osterfeld. This is a unique podcast because it's one that I never actually planned on releasing publicly, but seeing that it's National Grandparents Day, and the fact that many of us have lost our grandparents this year due to the global pandemic, or we are in many cases unable to see our grandparents, I thought I would release this episode as a reminder to take the time to do the things that are important to you because we have no idea what tomorrow will bring. For years, I've tried to figure out ways to spend more time with my grandparents. I concocted fun ideas like cooking for the holidays together, weekly lunches, monthly movie nights, and of course, none of them happened. For years I've wanted some sort of audio or video with my grandfather and I always put it off because I was busy traveling for work, or busy with my daughter, or busy being busy. I wanted a recording, in his own words, his own voice, retelling some of my favorite stories. Like the hilarious story of his first date with my grandmother, when he thought he was meeting some blond and a brunette showed up at the door. Or the story of how he somehow convinced a restaurant franchise owner to allow him to open a franchise without the money to pay for it. Or the strange decision to retire at 49 years old, when he was finally making enough money to save a little, because he thought he wouldn't make it past his fifties. This pandemic has been difficult for a lot of different reasons, and I cannot discount how fortunate I am to have grandparents to even talk about, but it's been most difficult being unable to see my family, to not have my grandparents hold their newborn great-grandchildren, and celebrate birthdays together and so on. At nearly 90 years old, I can only hope my grandfather is around long enough for this pandemic to end, see his great-grandchildren take their first steps, speak their first words, and celebrate their lives together. I knew I could no longer wait for the timing to be perfect so I took the initiative, and decided it was now or never to get a recording with my grandfather! There is not a moment to waste in this life, and nothing could be more of a reminder than a global pandemic. So I bought my grandfather some headphones and a microphone, shipped to his house, and walked him through recording a podcast remotely. The audio is a bit muffled as I tried to troubleshoot virtually, but the stories are there and they are full of gold! My grandfather is not the perfect version of full life living. He can be rigid, aggressive, short-tempered, and downright grumpy, but he loves his family fiercely, he has an incredible work ethic, and he built his life out of nothing, consciously and deliberately building a family, working his butt off, saving, investing, deciding to retire when most people wouldn't even consider it. My grandfather is a force, and when he puts his mind to something, he gets it done. To say I learned a lot from him is a grand understatement. He taught me from an early age that real wealth is being surrounded by a loving family. He taught me the value of hard work, investing, saving, not living in debt, making your way in the world, being entrepreneurial, and never giving up. So happy Grandparents Day! If you have grandparents alive, let's give them a call today, let them know we love them, and that they're special to us.
National Grandparents Day was September 8th and is celebrated each year the Sunday following Labor Day.
