First-up there's Martin Campbell, the director of the acclaimed James Bond films Goldeneye with Pierce Brosnan and Casino Royale starring Daniel Craig. This is followed by a chat with Simon West, the director of the iconic '90s Nicolas Cage pic, Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie. Martin Campbell discusses his new film, Cleaner, a high-rise action pic starring Star Wars star, Daisy Ridley and Clive Owen. We not only talk about the practicalities of making an action film, but we also cover 30 years of Goldeneye, the legacy of the James Bond franchise, as well as why we haven't had a belated second sequel to his brilliant 1998 film, The Mask Of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. This was my third time interviewing the great Simon West, so we had great fun talking about keeping interviews fresh, as well as his new comedic action film, Old Guy. Shot and set in Belfast, the film stars the eclectic combination of Christoph Waltz, Cooper Hoffman and Lucy Liu. Simon talks about filming in Belfast and why he was so eager to ditch the stereotype of Northern Ireland's violent past and shoot the province as a contemporary European location.

Hoffman appeared in five of Anderson's films, shaping some of his most iconic works and forming one of the most significant director-actor partnerships in modern cinema. From their five brilliant collaborations, Bella and Nick have selected three standout films showcasing Hoffman's extraordinary range:First up is Boogie Nights, where Hoffman plays Scotty J, the kind but awkward and vulnerable crew member in Anderson's dark, raunchy, and wildly entertaining 70s period piece.Next, we dive into Magnolia, one of Anderson's most acclaimed films, with Hoffman delivering a touching performance as Phil, a compassionate hospice caretaker with a heart of gold. Finally, we arrive at The Master, a masterpiece in both filmmaking and acting. Are you like me and just a little too young to have experienced firsthand some of the retro pop culture you've grown to love? Then I've got five films to help take you back to the 70s and 80s, that weren't made during that time. These films are like me—not quite retro. First, we have It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), which deliver a one-two punch of horror and nostalgia. This film adaptation of Stephen King's It moves the setting up to the late 1980s and mid-2010s, modernizing the original story just a bit, but still leaning into the nostalgia of childhood, friendship, and conquering childhood trauma. Next up is 2011's Super 8, written and directed by J. J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. Set in 1979, a group of kids while making a Super 8 movie accidentally record a train crash and get footage that they shouldn't have seen. It's a wonderful send-up of horror and sci-fi directors, like Spielberg, George Romero, John Carpenter, and Alfred Hitchcock, while also being a poignant exploration of grief. If you need something to lighten the mood after the scariness of the It films and Super 8, you'll enjoy 1998's The Wedding Singer! The tagline for the film is “He's going to party like it's 1985!” and boy, does he ever. Wonderfully silly and surprisingly sincere and romantic, The Wedding Singer is a lot of fun from start to finish. Grab your Aqua Net and enjoy this fun rom-com with the person who wants to grow old with you. Our final selection for our Not Quite Retro movie night is the 2021 Paul Thomas Anderson film, Licorice Pizza. While met with some initial controversy, this is a multi-award nominated and winning film from the writer and director that brought you Magnolia and Boogie Nights. Set in 1973, Licorice Pizza watches our leads, Alana Kane (played by Alana Haim) and Gary Valentine (played by Cooper Hoffman), grow up, figure out life, and fall in love. It's a mythology of early 70s San Fernando Valley legends with an amazing soundtrack, a cast stacked with phenomenal actors, and the band HAIM, as well as their parents. Make a martini, or maybe just grab two cokes, and enjoy the feel-good comedy that is Licorice Pizza. We hope our selections this week take you back to a time in history that you may or may not have experienced firsthand. If you did, do these films accurately capture that time period? Which films do you think capture it best? Thanks for joining us on this trip back to the 70s and 80s in this episode of the Video Store Podcast. This week, P.T.August continues with P.T.A.'s most recent output, and for the second time this year we're joined once again by the people's champion Matt Pollock to talk about a movie he has been smitten with since its COVID-era theatrical release: it's 2021's Licorice Pizza, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and starring Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, Benny Safdie, Skyler Gisondo, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Harriet Sansom Harris, and the entire Haim family. A collection of mostly true stories from 1970s L.A. embued with the golden glow of Anderson's own That One Summer childhood nostalgia, its led by two extremely winning performances from a pair of actors both making their big screen debuts. While not without its controversies, it's a dreamlike hazy hangout movie we all loved quite a lot. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our discussion, Licorice Pizza is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and across the globe on the Criterion Channel at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Twisters, Targets, Scanners, Kim's Video, Michael Clayton, Saturday Night, The Ladies Man, Coneheads, It's Pat, Rebel Ridge, Hold The Dark, Green Room, Blue Ruin, Clueless, Dazed and Confused, Wild Wild West, An Evening With Kevin Smith, A Star Is Born, Maestro, Warrior, Are You There God? P.T.August rolls on with the only PTA movie neither host had seen before embarking on this month-long odyssey, a 1950s period piece set in the London fashion world that seems on the outside like a stuffy Oscar drama but packs some hidden humour in its dramatic depths. It's 2017's Phantom Thread, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps and Lesley Manville. While most folks would might work their way through a filmography in chronological order, we've fallen into an accidental cosmic alignment as this feels more in line with The Master than almost any other movie Anderson has made, boasting another terrific Jonny Greenwood score. Plus: Hayley's fired up to welcome her little niece into the world, while J Mo's got a theatrical field report on Deadpool & Wolverine. Bombay starts it off by remembering a time he ruined his chance with a girl by not being able to play it cool after she gave her number. Then the boys look at one of the great hang movies of all-time that's centered around two flawed lead characters, and how Paul Thomas Anderson seamlessly transported the viewer back to 1973 with this charming film brimming with messy characters. Cooper Hoffman's Gary may border on narcissistic, but he seems well-adjusted compared to the older megalomaniacs he and Alana encounter, which include a surprisingly hilarious turn from Sean Penn, and a scene-stealing cameo from Bradley Cooper.

In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision-making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 26 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Dan Bayer to discuss the final film in their Paul Thomas Anderson series, Licorice Pizza (2021). In his latest film to date, PTA embarked on a cinematic return to his home, the San Fernando Valley, to create a nostalgic look back on the time and place he grew up in. In collecting stories from friends, permission to create characters based on real life people, and filming a movie with his friends and family during the end of the 2020 pandemic, PTA set out to make a hot bottom film that got a lot of people talking about the story of Alana and Gary, to lost souls that collide for a series of adventures during the summer of 1973. With two all-time first-time performances from Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman, PTA made relaxed comedy on the surface that works equally as a commentary on the uneven power dynamics men and women deal with throughout their lives. In this film episode of the series, Ryan, Jay, and Dan talk about the central relationship of the film, what the ending really means, some of the internet chatter surrounding the film, the veteran actor work from Sean Penn and Bradley Cooper, Alana Haim's real life family playing roles in the film, water beds, pinball machines, gas shortages, peanut butter sandwiches and a whole lot more. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h15m. The guys will be back next week to begin their series covering the films of William Friedkin with a review of his next film, The Boys in the Band. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. It's another exciting match-up this week on Fabulous Film & Friends as we compare the works of two L.A. showbiz-loving poets cum grand masters with Quentin Tarantino's 2019 magnum opus, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Margaret Qualley, Dakota Fanning, Mike Moh, a pre-Elvis Austin Butler, Kurt Russell, Al Pacino, and a whole host of familiar faces against Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza starring unknowns Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman with big time help from Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper, Tom Waits, Ben Safdie, John Michael Higgins and in a master class of supporting acting, Harriet Sansom Harris as a tough-talking agent.   I'm your host Gino Caputi and my guests this week are once again series regulars Dr. David Johnson and Roseanne Caputi and here celebrating his birthday with us, the ageless and unstoppable Gordon Alex Roberstson . Again, simple synopses, which as we all know are always the best.Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, is set in the summer of 1969 under the looming shadow of the Manson family's forthcoming murder-spree, a fading TV star named Rick Dalton who is next-door neighbor to Manson victim Sharon Tate and her husband Roman Polanski, juggles the ups and downs of his career, while leaning on the solid friendship of his stunt double and best friend Cliff Boothe.  Licorice Pizza, chronicles the story of Alana, an aimless 25-year old school photographer's assistant, living with her parents  in 1973 in the San Fernando Valley, and Gary Valentine, a 15-year old actor and aggressive entrepreneur who, try as they might, cannot escape the fact that they were meant for each other. Are these two films entirely different or very similar?Find out!

O elenco ainda traz Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn, Tom Waits e Maya Rudolph. Já "Belfast" concorre a sete estatuetas: Melhor Filme, Direção, Roteiro Original, Ator Coadjuvante (Ciarán Hinds), Atriz Coadjuvante (Judi Dench), Som e Canção Original ("Down to Joy", de Van Morrison).
