Josh is joined by recurring guest Daniel Lima to discuss the newest film from Hunger Games direct Francis Lawrence, "The Long Walk." They discuss how Lawrence made cinematic the Stephen King adaptation set on a single walk along one road, the anti-authoritarian messaging of the film, the performances from Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson and the rest of the young up-and-coming cast and much more!
Mike and Kenny review and spot faith in the second film this year based on a novel by Stephen King, The Long Walk. Stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Mark Hamil, Judy Greer and was directed by Francis Lawrence. The Long Walk was the first novel Stephen King wrote although it was not published for many years. Some of the film and faith themes we discuss from The Long Walk are echoed in later novels and series such as The Hunger Games, Squid Games. Faith Spotted: Persons of faith are called to be content with what one has Psalm 46. Greed in acquiring material, or social wealth and reptuation is contrary to the teachings of both testaments of the Bible. Set in the midst of a post apocolyptic America, the story presents 50 or 100 persons (depending on the film or novel) that are willing to put themselves in the gravest danger for a 1% or 2% chance to win a large payout. The countryside and towns are presented as bleak and the people as joyless with litte to no hope in life. Faith allows persons to find meaning, joy and purpose in life and Philippians 4 calls Christians to rejoice in the Lord, always as, regardless of one's situation, the presence of the Lord is always with one and the promises of the Gospel of new life bring joy into one's life, regardless of the challeges or even suffering one is facing. All life has value because all people are children of God. Killing goes agains the commandments of both testaments. Not only are such contests that pit living persons against another not acceptable, participating in, or watching / condoning, them are incompatible with the teachings and life example of Christ. Those in leadership are charged with the responsibilty of the welfare of citizens and others in their cities, states, and nations. They are called to act as shepherds in offering care and protection to all people. The film depicts the games as a way those in control distract and control the population in much the same way as the gladiatorial games during the Roman rule. Such a strategy is not faithful leadership.
The latest of Stephen King's books to be brought to the screen is his 1979 dystopian novel The Long Walk. Directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by JT Mollner and staring Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson and Quebec Indigenous actor Joshua Odjick. So would Scott and I walk 10 000 miles to watch this film? or are we tired of even speaking about it? Also why does Winnipeg, Manitoba work so well for a dystopian film? You may think the American economy stinks now but it's still not bad enough to warrant the twisted walk that's portrayed in the movie “The Long Walk.” This movie takes place in a alternative history that resembles the 1950s. There was a great war and most people are in poverty. However there is an annual event called The Long Walk that's meant to inspire every state in America to work harder to make the country prosper again. A man from each state is chosen to participate in The Long Walk from a pool of men from each state who signed up. If you are the last man remaining at the end, you're rich and you are granted one wish for whatever you want. The rules? Very simple. If you stop walking long enough, you get shot dead. So lace up your Nikes and try not to have too much fun! The Long Walk is run by a character called The Major who is portrayed to be a malevolent, heartless blowhard so it makes sense he's played by Mark Hamill. Is it worth checking this movie out at the theater? Check out this episode to find out. “The Long Walk” also stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Jordan Gonzalez, Joshua Odjick, Roman Griffin Davis and Judy Greer. Fifty boys start walking, three warnings get you shot, and somehow we are the ones out of breath. In this week's Mindframes, Michael and Dave march into The Long Walk—where Cooper Hoffman broods, David Jonsson keeps the heart beating, and Mark Hamill cosplays as your least favorite PE teacher. Along the way we debate whether dystopias should come with better snacks, why America's obsessed with televised misery, and if ★★★/5 means we survived… or just need new shoes. Synopsis In a dystopian America, fifty young men are chosen to participate in a walk with no finish line for a chance to win endless riches. The catch: the winner is the only one who survives. Review I went into this film saying, oh so I'm just gonna watch a bunch of dudes walk for almost two hours? And yes, that is exactly what happens in the film. But, I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson are a great pair, they perform incredibly well as the two main characters. There is not an actor in this film that is unconvincing; I truly believe they were on a grueling walk for their lives. Like I said, yes it is a film where we are just watching men walk and die and walk and die over and over again, but the script is absolutely rock solid. I teared up, I laughed, I winced, I flinched, I felt all sorts of things. This is the ultimate dudes rock movie. It reminded me of how I felt watching Stand by Me for the first time. I loved this. Score 10/10

The Long Walk is one of the better ensemble castings this year, with deep rooted character development amongst a group of mostly charming young men who have felt the need to make the ultimate sacrifice. It fits right in line with how King's tales delicately handle camaraderie in dystopian dramas where people are subjected to horrific outcomes while striving for new hope. To kick off a new cycle featuring musicians turned actors, Julian, Madeline and Emilio rewatch 'Licorice Pizza', Paul Thomas Anderson's 2021 film and love letter to the San Fernando Valley circa 1973. Populated with memorable turns from Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Skylar Gisondo, Benny Safdie and others, the film is anchored by the performances of newcomers Cooper Hoffman (son of late great PTA favorite Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and Alana Haim, the youngest of three musician sisters that make up the band HAIM. The group discusses their own personal histories with HAIM, as well as the band's many collaborations with PTA, who directed several of their music videos, They then dig into the unusual friendship dynamic between Gary and Alana, discuss several of the reoccurring motifs, praise the film's visual aesthetic, the many great needle drops, and weigh in the film's polarizing final note. Next we check out the 4th & final film in the flagship Series in The Conjuring Universe centered around Ed & Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilso & Vera Farmiga). The Conjuring: Last Rites is based on the Warrens' final & most harrowing case & returning director Michael Chaves has us hopeful for a chilling & fitting sendoff to Hollywood's favorite ghost-hunting power couple. And finally, director Francis Lawrence breaks free from The Hunger Games to adapt a Stephen King novel with a sinister & strikingly simple setup -- as a group of teenage compete in an annual contest with chillingly simple rules: Walk or Die. The film looks tense & unsettling, not least because Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Batman: The Animated Series, srsly SO MUCH freakin' iconic stuff) appears to be giving a chilling turn as the boys' dastardly drill-sargeant. Starring Alien Romulus' David Jonsson, Licorice Pizza's Cooper Hoffman, & a cast of upcomers - here's hoping we have another strong Stephen King adaptation on our hands!! First-up there's Martin Campbell, the director of the acclaimed James Bond films Goldeneye with Pierce Brosnan and Casino Royale starring Daniel Craig. This is followed by a chat with Simon West, the director of the iconic '90s Nicolas Cage pic, Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie. Martin Campbell discusses his new film, Cleaner, a high-rise action pic starring Star Wars star, Daisy Ridley and Clive Owen. We not only talk about the practicalities of making an action film, but we also cover 30 years of Goldeneye, the legacy of the James Bond franchise, as well as why we haven't had a belated second sequel to his brilliant 1998 film, The Mask Of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. This was my third time interviewing the great Simon West, so we had great fun talking about keeping interviews fresh, as well as his new comedic action film, Old Guy. Shot and set in Belfast, the film stars the eclectic combination of Christoph Waltz, Cooper Hoffman and Lucy Liu. Simon talks about filming in Belfast and why he was so eager to ditch the stereotype of Northern Ireland's violent past and shoot the province as a contemporary European location.

Josh is joined by The Rewind's Resident Conservatives Daniel Lima and Josh Brown as they travel back to 1970s New York for a double feature. First, (Beginning-1:05:20) they discuss "The Apprentice" and whether the film taught its audience enough about Donald Trump's origins to justify its existence, its depiction of attorney Roy Cohn and his influence on Trump, the performances by Sebastrian Stan and Jeremy Strong as Trump and Cohn and much more! Then, (1:05:20-End) both Joshes head to primetime and discuss Jason Reitman's "Saturday Night" including the extent to which the story of the first night of SNL kept them engaged despite what they know about the show's success, where the film possibly took more liberties than was necessary, the performances from the deep young cast including Gabriel LaBelle, Cooper Hoffman and Rachel Sennott and much more! Disclaimer: This was recorded two weeks before Election Day 2024, which is why there is not specific commentary on the results of the election or events in the two weeks leading up to the election. Edited and Produced by Daniel Lima.
