The observance of National Hispanic Heritage month goes on every year from September 15th to October 15th to honor the lives of American citizens with Hispanic heritage. That goes the same for the VFW as we are just a melting pot, a reflection of the greater society of our great nation. Although we are all different strands, America is much stronger when we are braided together, and nothing does that more than military service. Through the camaraderie, we are unidos, or joined together. Rob's guests on today's episode are two gentlemen who have very different Hispanic backgrounds, and different military service experiences, but are both Americans to the core. First, he speaks with VFW's QuarterMaster General Mark Garduno. He talks about his military service and what it means to be the financial steward of one of the largest and most established veterans service organizations in the nation. Then, he speaks with Retired Army Master Sergeant Felix Figuroa. He reflects on his background, military service, and the invasion of Afghanistan on the anniversary of the war. Marc Garduno, VFW Quartermaster General As Quartermaster General, Marc and his team are responsible for all VFW finances and the management of VFW facilities. [2:06] After high school, Marc followed in his father's footsteps joining the Army in the 82nd Airborne until retiring in 2008. [5:44] Wanting to continue serving, Marc got a degree in nonprofit management and put his name in the ring to be assistant to the Quartermaster General. [17:24] Marc describes the roles and responsibilities of the Quartermaster General. [21:47] Marc describes the importance of the official brand and the use of the store. [26:11] Marc embraces his Mexican heritage but considers himself an American first. [33:20] Felix Figueroa, Retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant and Afghan War Veteran Felix describes being proud of his Puerto Rican heritage growing up in Michigan and his decision to enlist in 1997. [44:47] Remembering September 11, 2001, Felix describes serving his country on U.S. soil until his deployment to Afghanistan. [50:02] Felix continues his story about the shock of serving in Operation Enduring Freedom as a Broadcast Journalist. [1:10:38] Felix and his team left Afghanistan in February between Operation Tempo and Operation Anaconda. [1:29:39] Felix offers a word to fellow Afghan War veterans. As many of you may know, September is National Hispanic Heritage month as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latino community. Many of those who came to this country had one clear endgame: to accomplish the American Dream. To celebrate all the Latinos' accomplishments in the United States, I decided to bring back an episode that has a special place in my heart, my father's story. Now that we are about to celebrate Mexican Independence Day on September 16, I wanted you to hear his story of how he was able to manifest his dreams and create a successful life not only for himself but for his children. Today's guest, Raul Tapia, will tell us why he decided to leave Mexico and come to the United States, his first job as a truck driver, and how, from there, he was able to build his own profitable business. Raul Tapia began his career in the food service industry in 1972 as a truck driver. In 1978 he was promoted to a sales position in which he worked to become the top sales executive for Vincent Arranaga Foodservices. In 1980, Raul bought his restaurant Casa Gamino, and after 27 years of proprietorship, he sold it to his long-time manager. In 1985, he founded Tapia Brother with his two brothers, which has become a very successful business today. Raul negotiated many contracts and block buys for the company and continues to be the cornerstone of Tapia Brothers Co. Some Questions I Ask:Where were you born? (7.16)How do you make decisions in your business? (21.07)Did you ever think you would be in this position when you were a kid? Episode 1: Why A Podcast? Hispanic Heritage Month & Meet The Deli - Interviews with Adriana the Deli Manager + Cheese Chat with Lynda & Nancy the Meat and Cheese Assistants. Welcome Introduction: Hello and welcome to our first ever episode of Hotdish, the Just Food Co-op podcast. I’m Vicki, your host and I am very excited to bring you the latests news from your friendly neighborhood co-op. The purpose of this podcast is to keep the conversation going beyond the walls of our building. Just Food Co-op aims to be a meeting place for community and friends, where our stories can be heard and shared. Where there is an open line of communication about your food, where that food comes from, and how it is being used to nourish our town and its members. Announcements: This is our first ever Just Food Co-op Podcast. This is a podcast in progress, and the format of the podcast will adjust to meet the needs of a particular week or subject area. Generally we are aiming for a 10-15 minute podcast that catches you up on what is happening at the store. We will also include stories from the community, vendors, farmers, and employees. There will be discussions with board members and the management team of the store. But, since we’re called Hotish, we also want to get the stories behind what’s happening as well as the story behind the food we’re selling. Segment 1 - Story - Why a podcast? The story of this podcast. (Vicki) I started at Just Food Co-op just under a year ago. At that time I was hired as the Social Media & Creative Coordinator. This meant that I was responsible for the online presence and voice of the co-op. As I was working with the concept of what the co-op sounded like, I started thinking about all of the voices I hear inside the store on a day-to-day basis. The buyers ordering over the phone, the deli department describing a use for a gourmet cheese, or a produce stocker raving about the new type of mango we now have in stock. These are the voices and the conversations that get me excited to try new foods and use new ingredients. What I wanted to do is capture these conversations and get them out to the community. If you are a frequent shopper here, you know how knowledgeable our staff is and how helpful they are when you’re looking for something. What you don’t often get to hear is how these products came to be in the store. How were they chosen? The other conversations that no one gets to hear are the ones between our buyers and our vendors and farmers. When the orchardist is excited about a new apple - when the local farmer is getting ready to harvest. These are the exchanges I hope to bring to you through this podcast. I’ll also be discussing different cooperative tenants and principals in attempt to demystify what our co-op does and what we stand for. So, tell me about what’s on your plate. Interview - (Adriana) Hispanic Heritage Month, Breakfast Bar, 4 days a week Hot Bar.
