This week, Sara brings us the story of one of India's greatest heroines and rebel leader Rani Lakshmi Bai!  As the British East India Company tightened its grip on India by violating Hindu traditions, stealing land from Indian landowners and replacing India's leaders with British military officials, the people of India grew more and more angry. When rebellion breaks out in Jhansi, Queen Lakshmi Bai tries to play by the British "rules" to maintain order, but when they betray her and threaten her execution this badass rani takes no time in combining forces with the other rebellion leaders in a display of force the Brits are not expecting. How does this "Jezebel of India" build an army, escape a siege, ride almost 100 miles in a day and lead the rebel armies into combat? Eva "Evita" Perón - Part 2: The Truth, the Lies and Everything In Between

Last week we dove into the legend of "Argentina's First Lady" Eva Perón. We started from the outside in; What is it that people say about her today? What does her foundation and museum say about her? What does she say about herself in her autobiography? We found a LOT of mythology in the mix - she was obviously an incredible figurehead that helped transform Argentina and the lives of her descamisados (the shirtless ones). But the legend felt heavy with a rose colored tint and a LOT of swirling rumors portraying a darker side of the story so in Part 2 Sara attempts to thread the needle and discover the heart of the story. Who was Evita? Why do we see so much conflict and such disparate versions of her story? How can a woman both be so adored by the public that she draws incredible crowds and makes the cover of Time Magazine, but also has to end her European tour early because the crowd threw tomatoes at her?! Sara brings us a more complete version of the story - the dramatic history that led up to Evita & Juan Perón's rise, what Peronism stands for and accomplished for the Argentine people, and why Peronism and the the Peróns were targeted to heavily by the media and the oligarchy of their time. It's a really interesting journey - listen now to hear this incredible story. — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. Maria Eva Duarte Perón grew up in poverty with her mother after the death of her father. Falling in love with performance, she became a radio star, model and then moderately successful actress. An activist from early on - she took on leadership roles with the actor unions and became politically active - eventually meeting Juan Perón at an event and almost never leaving his side. As Juan's popularity with the people grew, the people in charge grew distressed, eventually arresting him. But after large protests he was released and was soon thereafter elected President of Argentina, with Evita as his side as First Lady. The work they did in Argentina to help the poor and protect the people is truly astonishing. The influence of the Perón Foundation and Peronism are still felt strongly in Argentina today and Evita is widely lauded as the country's most influential woman of all time - establishing women's rights including the right to vote, and helping pull countless people out of abject poverty through social services. But as we know on this podcast, the story isn't always so simple. In Part 1 of this 2-Part Broad, Sara brings you the Evita that you see in the museums and on the streets of Buenos Aires, including some of the controversy that still thrives on the lips of the people. Then next week we'll dive deeper into the rumors and the history to see if we can uncover some of the deeper truths of her story. — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. This week, Sara brings us the incomparable Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi! She is considered one of the foremost painters of the 17th century, eclipsing her father's skill and considered more brazen than Caravaggio himself. Due to her own exceptional skill and brilliant business tactics, Artemisia's popularity exploded and she painted commissions for the most elite patrons across all of Europe, becoming so successful she didn't even "need a husband" anymore. However, much of her life and success was overshadowed by her sexual assault at 17 years old and the public trial that followed. Much of her work reflects that brutal experience, too. Artemisia and her work has recently come back into the spotlight in the wake of the #metoo movement; Her paintings have become emblematic of the strong, powerful woman in the face of the violence inflected upon her. Sara's Broad of the Year - the woman who has made the most profound impact on women and women's rights this year is none other than Giséle Pelicot. This week saw the conclusion of the criminal trial against her ex-husband who drugged her without her knowledge, and 50 other men who r@ped her when she was drugged over the course of a decade. Giséle made the incredible choice to not only NOT remain anonymous, as most victims do in these proceedings, but ALSO to insist that the press and public be allowed into the courtroom, and that the video evidence of the crimes be played for all in the courtroom. This four-month trial has shaken France, but Giséle's actions have moved the women of France to stand up and speak out against the was women are treated in French society, and by the judicial system, the police and the hospitals. The impact of the trial, Sara thinks, may lead to great change from the women of France, and hopefully for the world. — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. It's spooky season once more and the perfect time to revisit the most well-known incident of witch hysteria in North America - the Salem Witch Trials! While many of you may be familiar with the story from your history classes and Arthur Miller's popular play-turned-Daniel-Day-Lewis-Winona-Ryder-movie The Crucible, Sara's research turns up some VERY interesting truths about the motivations of the the girls and their parents - who (not surprisingly) influenced, puppetered and corroborated the "accuser girls'" testimony. The second half of the episode we look more closely at the 13 individual women who were accused, tried, found guilty and were hanged for witchcraft at these trials; Who they were, why they were persecuted, and some of the specifics of their trials including the most ridiculous witness testimonies you could ever imagine. Another light went out of the world this week when we lost lost Joan Davis. "Ms. Davis" was Sara's High School History Teacher and was, arguably, THE BROAD THAT STARTED IT ALL! That's right, this podcast might never have come to being if it weren't for Ms. Davis. Teaching outside that standard curriculum and armed with Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States: 1492-Present, Ms. Davis made a profound impact teaching Sara and all of her students the importance of exploring history OUTSIDE of the viewpoint of the victors, the winners and the oppressors. That version of the story is not the full version - to understand fully how and why things in this world happened the way they did, you must understand the whole picture. It's not glossy, not beautiful, and often very unpleasant, but it's one of the most important things we can do for ourselves and for the future. Thank you, Ms. Davis, for your incredible work as a public school teacher. This week Sara brings us one of her personal heroes and feminist icons, the incomparable and prolific - bell hooks! Growing up a segregated Kentucky, Gloria Jean Watkins witnessed firsthand the wake of destruction wreaked by what she would later dub the Imperialist-White-Supremacist-Capitalist-Patriarchy. She spent the rest of her life in a fight against it as a writer, teacher, scholar, intellectual, cultural critic and author, and in Sara's opinion, is the the architect of a modern feminism that is both transformative and accessible to all. — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules.
