Carolina Hiller (Lina) is a world champion long track speed skater from Prince George. The 26-year-old Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club alumnus recently won the women's team sprint earlier at the ISU World Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen, Netherlands. After graduating from high school she moved from Prince George, BC, to Calgary, AB, where she spent four years on Canada's 'Next Gen' national team program from 2017 to 2021. She was dropped from the team in 2021 and lost her national team funding, then began training at the Olympic Oval in Calgary and used this setback as a stepping stone to an eventual world championship. Having already set Canada's fastest 500-metre time this year (37.85 seconds), Carolina first arrived on the national scene as a multi-medalist in long track at the 2015 Canada Winter Games, hosted in Prince George. She spent four years on the NextGen national squad. Carolina has many competitions coming up, but her long-term goal is to represent Team Canada at the 2026 Olympics in Italy. Carolina's mom is a rider with Wheelin' Warriors of the north, so athletics runs in her family. Her twin brother Nicolas Hiller has also competed in speed skating and has been a member of Canada's national team program. Episode 012: Richmond Olympic Oval with Paul Fast, PEAs the founder of Fast + Epp, Paul has emerged a leader in architecturally exposed structures and is recognized for his unconventional use of materials, including hybrids of timber, concrete and steel. To this note, the Richmond Olympic Oval was constructed for the 2010 Olympic speed skating events. This structure capitalizes on Fast + Epp's ability to push the design envelope and create unique and visually pleasing spaces. This structure includes free spanning timber and steel hybrid arches with intermediate “wave” panels spanning between the arches. The “wave” panels are constructed with 2x4's, reclaimed from pine beetle kill material. This structure has received many accolades including awards in both the timber and steel categories.Fast + Epp is headquartered in Vancouver, BC, with offices all around world. Highly involved in the structural engineering community, Paul sits on several university advisory boards and the Structural Engineers Association of British Columbia. He was the 2021 Gold Medal Recipient from the Institution of Structural Engineers for his contributions to structural engineering community. He also won the 2022 education award for his mass timber class at the University of Illinois-Urbana. Fast + Epp uses forward thinking concepts such as their internal embodied carbon tool to quantify carbon output for projects and they are also able to test their design theories in their full scale Concepts Lab which is located in the first level of their office, allowing them to trail blaze innovation. If you enjoy this show and want more content like this, visit gablmedia.comMentioned in this episode:Gabl Membership

Isabelle Weidemann is having a year. The Canadian speedskater is number one in 3000 and 5000 meter racing. She is the woman the rest of the world is chasing, heading into the Beijing Olympics. Weidemann is also the acknowledged diesel engine in Canada's pursuit trio, along with Ivanie Blondin and Valérie Maltais. Why Diesel? Because once the lanky 26 year-old gets up to speed, she has fantastic efficiency and endurance. Weidemann hauls her teammates in her wake for extraordinarily long distances. Weidemann hunkered down for a chat with her old teammate Anastasia, at home in Calgary, a short jog from the Olympic Oval. The Ottawa-born skater is as surprised as anyone to find herself a team veteran. Time flies when you are logging hundreds of hours toward saving fractions of seconds. One of the surprises for Weidemann, amid the inevitable slog of training, is the recognition that try as she might in every way to be a better athlete, life away from the ice has more influence than most people acknowledge. The week she got a new puppy was also the week Weidemann smashed personal goals in training. A trip out of town with family set off a streak of racing successes. It happens too often to be a coincidence. For the truly driven athlete…there's an art to discovering when and how to step back, take the foot off the gas, and return to even greater results. Anastasia has often said Isabelle Weidemann is one of the most underrated athletes in Canada. Before the Winter Olympics get underway, here's a chance to discover why that quiet background buzz about the Canadian Speedskating team is getting steadily louder.

There's a buzz on about the Canadian Speed skating team, heading toward the Beijing Olympics. The recent national trials revealed surprising strengths and plunging race times from veterans and newer hopefuls alike. Before the cheering echos from the trials had a chance to dwindle away at Calgary's Olympic Oval, Player's Own Voice podcast host Anastasia Bucsis convened a 'state of the skate' meeting with three champions of the sport. It's a raucous sit down chat about Speed Skating then and now. Chef du mission for the Canadian team, Catriona Le May Doane, Assistant team Coach Shannon Rempel, and multi medallist and commentator Kristina Groves all piled around the table to talk through the challenging pursuit of crazy speed on dime-thin skate blades. None of these women care much for clichés, but they all agree- this is living proof that if you build it, they will come. Canada's most successful winter Olympic sport got to be that way, because decisions were made, back in 1988, to keep the Olympic skating Oval and institution, and coaching, training and expertise firmly in place. There are Olympic medal hopefuls right now, who got to be that way because they could see and skate alongside the best of the best, when they were first trying it out. Legends of Long track- this week on POV podcast.
