The World Happiness Report says that factors such as social support, economic security and work-life balance all contribute to life satisfaction and overall fulfillment. But checking all those boxes is easier said than done. Can we work hard toward our professional goals without sacrificing other parts of our lives? Jennifer Moss, a speaker and strategist on work-life balance whose latest book tackles employee burnout,  says it's paramount for our happiness and health that we don't overwork ourselves. She says that instead, we should focus on striking a balance in our lives. Conscientiousness, perseverance and meticulousness are all words associated with perfectionism. But perfectionism comes from a deeper sense of inadequacy, of not feeling good enough. Constantly striving to prove yourself leads to anxiety, depression and burnout. Researcher Thomas Curran describes perfectionism in detail, why it's getting worse and what we can do about it. Thomas Curran is a professor of psychology and behavioral science at the esteemed London School of Economics and author of The Perfection Trap: Embracing the Power of Good Enough, just released on August 8, 2023. In the book he explores the roots of perfectionism in wider society and explains how it affects our mental health and productivity. Perfectionism has risen sharply since the mid-2000s, which Thomas attributes to societal pressures like social media, smartphones, economic instability, and an emphasis on educational and career achievement. Collectively, these factors have led to increased feelings of not measuring up. Workplace burnout is such an urgent issue that up to 700,000 people are believed to have died primarily due to workload stress – and yet many company leaders remain in denial. Their stance is that self-care will provide the solution when, in fact, it's the workplace eco-system in which these victims are operating that so often drives their unfair fate. To be honest with ourselves and others by expressing our no from a place of clarity of what our bigger yes is.   Invisible Pressure: When leaders/bosses email employees on off-work hours, it creates invisible pressure. Because so many companies have shifted to remote work, leaders need to be aware of this invisible pressure and model proper work-life balance. Also, recognizing that due to employee gender, race, sexual orientation, and other factors, by not having awareness regarding emails, meetings, and conversations, leaders can sometimes unconsciously create a culture of inequity.   The Difference Between Technical and Adaptive problems: Leaders need to look at the difference between psychoemotional issues, the work culture they create, and mental health as separate from systematic issues. As a leader, you can understand that you are not a mental health professional. However, it is your responsibility to be the conduit for your employees so that they have the resources for mental health. This means putting systems in place for the adaptive problems and recognizing they are separate variables to be addressed.    Are we Mating or Meeting: How the brain registers our interaction with others on zoom or other online meeting platforms is important to recognize. Because we are not seeing the whole person and are able to gauge the eyes, our brain is registering the interaction from an animal instinct of mating or fighting. This is problematic in ways that create defensive and aggressive behaviors that would not happen if you were meeting in person with your people.

Christina Maslach: The Burnout Challenge Christina Maslach is the pioneer of research on job burnout, producing the standard assessment tool called the Maslach Burnout Inventory, award-winning articles, and several books, beginning with Burnout: The Cost of Caring, in 1982. Her research achievements over the past five decades have led to multiple awards from the National Academy of Sciences, Western Psychological Association, Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and many others. Christina has received awards for her outstanding teaching, including USA Professor of the Year in 1997. She has been a Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley since 1971. Christina is now a core researcher at the Healthy Workplaces Center, at Berkeley, and the author along with Michael Leiter of The Burnout Challenge: Managing People's Relationships With Their Jobs*. In this conversation, Christina and I address the reality that burnout is often perceived as an issue with just the individual. We explore how leaders can begin to look at the larger picture: context, culture, and management, in order to address burnout more proactively. We discuss key mindsets that will help and a few tactics that almost every leader can use to get started. Key Points The canary in the coal mine is an indicator of a problem, not the source of it. Our tendency is to focus on the person (the figure) and to miss all the context and environment factors (the ground). Burnout is first and foremost a management issue. “Fixing” the person should not be the focus — instead, get curious about where there is a mismatch. Instead of focusing on what's wrong with the person, shift to what may be wrong in the relationship between the person and situation. Ensure you have a plan for communicated survey results. If you'd done surveys previously, share those results and also the actions the organization had taken before engaging in more surveys. Mollie West Duffy: Big Feelings Mollie West Duffy is an expert in organizational design, development, and leadership coaching. Key Points It's a myth that the less you compare yourself to others, the better. Often, the opposite is true: we don't compare ourselves enough. We tend to compare our weaknesses to other people's strengths. Finding ways to curate our inputs is often much more useful. Shifting from malicious envy to benign envy is helpful. Thoughts such as “I'm inspired by what they've done…” or “I haven't done what they've done…yet,” can move us to a healthier place. We see the best of people on social media. It's helpful to piece together the missing footage by comparing some of the nitty gritty. Compare present you against past you.
