Once the dominant culture in what is now Sonora, Yaqui populations were eventually diminished from conflict, disease, and even deportation out of their homelands. They eventually won back a significant portion of their traditional homeland in 1930. Citing a troubling disparity for Native youth suicides, two tribes are suing the country's most prominent social media companies. The lawsuit by the Spirit Lake Dakota Tribe and the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin alleges the addictive pull of the platforms is driving a mental health crisis for young people – and Native youth are particularly vulnerable. They join a long list of states and other entities taking on social media corporations saying they are degrading the country's mental health. We'll discuss how to recognize when social media is becoming a problem and some ideas for a healthier approach. The land is located around Gregory Canyon, a sacred area in San Diego County in California that was once slated for development before the tribe started a campaign to preserve it. A hearing took place on November 19, 2021. H.R.1975 passed the U.S. House of Representatives on November 2, 2021, following consideration on November 1. • H.R.4881, Old Pascua Community Land Acquisition Act. The bill places land into trust for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and declares it to be part of the tribe's reservation. The land is located in Tucson, Arizona, and will be eligible for gaming purposes. Call 1-844-7-NATIVE or text the corresponding number: 1-844-762-8483.  National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233.  —  Mary Kathryn Nagle is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, an attorney, a playwright ― and an advocate working to increase protections for Native women in the U.S. justice system.   Not long after the Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA, was reauthorized in 2013, she sat with fellow activist Lisa Brunner to talk about a new play Nagle was working on in response to the ruling.   Brunner said she told the playwright that VAWA is just a “sliver of a full moon” of the protection Native women need.  The metaphor resonated with Nagle, and “Sliver of a Full Moon” would become the title of her play. It shares the stories of Native survivors of domestic abuse, and exposes the gaps in the justice system that often let non-Native perpetrators commit crime without consequence. Critics say that over decades those gaps became an opportunity for abusers to flourish on Native land.  “Just imagine your own community,” said attorney Alfred Urbina, “where certain people weren't prosecuted or arrested for crimes. If you lived in an area where certain people didn't have to abide by the law, what does that do to a community?”  Urbina is the attorney general for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe in southwestern Arizona, one of the first tribes to begin prosecuting non-Native offenders under the VAWA 2013 rules.   Among Native survivors of violence, more than 90% reported they had experienced violence from a perpetrator who was non-Native, according to a survey funded by the U.S. Department of Justice.   The Violence Against Women Act was reauthorized on March 10, 2022, reaffirming tribes' authority to prosecute non-Native perpetrators of sexual violence and certain other crimes. It expands prosecution power for tribal nations in Maine and Alaska and offers funding to support law enforcement implementation of VAWA.   “It's not the totality of everything that we need. Right?” said Brunner. “But, you know, the full moon is bright. And we're just starting with the moon. Pascua Yaqui Tribe gets tax credits to build homes for 200 families By Madison Thomas Cronkite News In southern Arizona, a new affordable housing development is underway for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. Cronkite News reporter Madison Thomas explains how the development could change lives More than 1,000 families in the Pascua Yaqui Tribe are on a waitlist for affordable housing. That's according to Keith Gregory. He's the tribe's housing director. But for 200 families the wait will soon be over. “What we're trying to do has never been done before, anywhere in tribal housing,” says Gregory. “The first of the project, the phase we are working on right now, is literally the largest tax credit project ever done in the united states on tribal land.” Gregory says the tribe applied for the tax credits through the state's department of housing. The project received roughly 15 million dollars through tax credits sold to investors. “The tax credit program is authorized by the federal government,” says Gregory. “They allocate dollars to the states that then are allocated to individual projects.” The construction company expects to complete the first phase of the project by the end of the year. The next phase will include twenty-seven units and a third phase is currently in design. Gregory says they are committed to providing the community with the resources they need. “Housing is more than just buildings. It's an opportunity to help people reach their own goals,” says Gregory. Tenants will have the option to buy the home at a reduced rate after renting homes for 15 years.
