What is Birds Aren't Real? It's a satirical conspiracy theory designed to poke fun at legitimate conspiracies, spearheaded by Peter McIndoe. Since 2017, it's gained a massive online following, with plenty of people getting in on the joke while others harassed the founder. But even though it's all clearly meant to be satirical performance art, what can Birds Aren't Real tell us about actual conspiracies and how to dismantle them?--Written by Mike BedardEdited by Lewis Poggie--Join our Discord server!https://bit.ly/deepcutsdiscord--Pick up some Deep Cuts T-Shirts and other merch!https://bit.ly/deepcutsmerch--Get the official Deep Cuts shoulder patch!http://bit.ly/deepcuts_patch--Listen to our album, a 9 song rock opera about the rise and fall of Napster!https://open.spotify.com/album/63C5uu1tkzZ2FhfsrSSf5s?si=q4WItoNmRUeM159TxKLWew
Sub to the PPM Patreon to keep the show on the road:patreon.com/ParaPowerMappingAnd now for something different... "Anatomy of a Rug Pull: Crypto-Resistance or Jailbreak Hoax?" is the first podcast interview with internet prankster William Banks following his massively viral Free William Banks "Jail Saga" and the fake prison break that broke the web.Intro - 02:00Interview begins - 41:30 In which Klonny hangs up his deep history hat and switches into undercover journo mode.We embark on a brief history of Banks' "White Moses" alternate reality game / running bit that's composed of a series of vignettes purporting to show his "life behind bars" following his "arraignment" on charges of 6th degree larceny in the state of Connecticut for stealing pro-Israel lawn signs. For clarification: he did in fact steal the yard signs and a warrant was issued for his arrest, but Banks was never imprisoned. He turned himself in in February of last year and bonded out of detainment after mere hours. He appears to have rented a former prison in the state of Florida, possibly with financing help from his roommate Peter McIndoe (fellow internet prankster behind the somewhat comparable "Birds Aren't Real" conspiracy hoax), in order to produce the series of videos that he's been releasing to create the illusion of his incarceration over recent months at a steady drip. Since his charges were filed, his case appears to have concluded in December of last year and it was statutorily sealed (likely meaning it was dismissed on a technicality, he was acquitted, or... I'm not quite sure). We will seek to disambiguate some of reality from William Banks's fictions; see if we can catch him out in any narrative contradictions; ask him point blank about his stand up set posing as a Marine at the West Point Masonic Lodge on Apr. 1st of '22 to see if we can verify my contention that it actually happened contrary to it being a hoax; hear his response to some basic ideological & political questions re Israel, the resistance, & the genocide; provide him with an opportunity to respond to critiques from Calla Walsh, a communist & anti-Zion°ist saboteur who recently endured a 2 month prison sentence for damages caused to the Israeli-owned arms manufacturer El*bit Systems; and also politely press Banks on the finances of his crypto rug pulls and merch sales to see whether we can get definitive, comprehensive receipts re exactly how much of his earnings were donated to Gaza and whether he's lived up to his guarantees.A note re my interviewing methodology: I decided to try and meet Banks at his level by acting as if I'd returned to believing in the jailbreak to see if I could get him to be a little more forthcoming that way.Along the way, I think we may just manage to capture the most authentic glimpse of the real William Banks—glimpsed between the lines of his looping personification & self-mythologizing.All in all, one of the more fascinating episodes & interviews I've embarked on.A possible postmortem analysis of the interview may follow depending on developments.Songs & clips:| Various William Banks vids | | Tom T Hall - "A Week in Country Jail" | | Fetty Wap - "Trap Queen" |

Peter McIndoe is the founder of the Birds Aren't Real movement-slash-conspiracy theory. He is also the author of the book, Birds Aren't Real: The True Story of Mass Avian Murder and the Largest Surveillance Campaign in U.S. History. Peter doesn't believe any of that, by the way, but he has good insights on the type of people who do. Guest: Satirical conspiracy theory leader Peter McIndoe It all started when Peter McIndoe, a self-described “obnoxious teenager,” went to a women's march and scrawled the most random phrase he could think of on a sign: “Birds Aren't Real.” When asked by people around him what he meant, he improvised a whole back story, someone posted a video of him online, and a fake movement was born. He spent a couple of years zigzagging across the U.S. in his van, playing the part of a conspiracy leader, doing interviews and leading crowds of his followers in chants. Many of his fans were in on the joke, while others — including some journalists — did think he was serious. He joins “This Matters” to talk about the challenge of staying in character as a conspiracy leader, how he thinks these movements get sparked, what sustains them. He also talks about why those reasons may not be what you think. What would you like to hear on Toronto Star podcasts? Let us know in this survey and you can enter to win a $100 gift card.
Birds Aren't Real founder, Peter McIndoe, joins to talk about the impact of the satirical conspiracy that captured the imagination of Gen Z and what he learned about the appeal of false realities after spending years in character as one of the nation's leading conspiracy theorists. But first: Is TikTok helping Trump win? Why is Google telling people to eat rocks? And what's the story behind the “All Eyes on Rafah” image going viral across Instagram? Jon and Max break it down.

There was a time when Peter McIndoe might see you on the street and ask: have you ever seen a baby pigeon? If you said no, he'd probably grin and say, of course you haven't, because birds are actually spy drones created by the US government – and they emerge “fully adult” from “the factory.” Peter McIndoe peddled a crazy idea – that all birds are drones created and monitored by the U.S. government. As ridiculous (and hilarious) as this sounds, Peter's conspiracy theory that “Birds Aren't Real” gained a huge following. In this episode, Peter discusses why he's used the framework of a conspiracy theory to explore the "us-versus-them" mentality that is so pervasive in us humans. He also shares what he witnessed as he took his performance across the globe, and why he finds it more important than ever that we talk to each other with empathy even in the most absurd situations. On this latest episode of But Have You Heard About, Matt and I discuss the more recent conspiracy theory that birds...aren't real. They're just decoys from the government to spy on us. Does it sound a bit far fetched? Well...it should. In 2017, Peter McIndoe created this preposterous idea. This came to life while at a Trump Rally; memes upon memes came from this photo. While holding his single sign of "Birds Aren't Real," he started a movement that has thousands in on the joke. For every, "ok but explain__" he has an answer, albeit a ridiculous one. So why are so many people in on this made up conspiracy theory? Well, most Birds Aren't Real members, many of whom are part of an on-the-ground activism network called the Bird Brigade, grew up in a world overrun with misinformation. Some have relatives who have fallen victim to conspiracy theories. For many, the movement has become a way to collectively grapple with those experiences. Want to hear more about this actual fake theory? Take a listen and see if you agree that this theory might be a good way to help those that believe in other conspiracy theories see...how they might be wrong? To learn more about Birds Aren't Real, you can visit their site to grab gear or sign up to be part of the activist network, you can go here:https://birdsarentreal.com/

It's Casual Friday! Sam hosts Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Although technical difficulties cut the episode slightly short, Digby and Sam touch on the two year anniversary of the World Health Organization's declaration of the COVID-19 Pandemic, diving into what we've learned about our rampant individualist culture, and the complete decimation of our government's capacity to do anything – from the fact we still have no assessment of the role long COVID truly plays, to the absence of any infrastructure or apparatus to prepare or deal with future waves. Next, they walk through Biden's reactions to the invasion of Ukraine, from his steadfast commitment to keeping the US out of the actual warfare to his rhetoric around American energy independence, before diving into the failures in putting this rhetoric into practice, as he goes from discussing this independence from oil to flaunting the US's oil production. This brings them to the failure of Democratic leadership since Biden's arrival at the White House, and the myriad steps along the way, and then they wrap up with the surprisingly not-devastating effects of the recent round of gerrymandering on the Democrats. Next, the Public Information Officer for independent organization “Birds Aren't Real,” Peter McIndoe joins as he takes on mainstream media's refusal to do any research, and insistence on shutting down alternative opinions, before he dives fully into his organization's project, and how they've been fighting against takedowns by CNN and the New York Times. Sam also touches on the return of baseball, the collapse of the Iran deal, and Biden's potential reversal of Title 42. And in the Fun Half: Sam watches Sean Hannity do his best to lead Trump to water, but can't make him not come out as pro-authoritarian leaders worldwide, as he insists Putin, Xi, and Kim Jong-Un understood him better than he understood himself. Laura Ingraham continues her tradition of using her journalistic “integrity” to do whatever she can to make the world more dangerous for queer folks, and Ben Carson reminds the “LGB-whatever” community that they matter. Sam also dives into the Democrats' inability to portray the right in any honest and toxic light, and Andrew Callaghan's coverage of the alt-right's changing takes on Putin, plus, your IMs! In this episode I am talking about the nature of the conspiracy theory. I think the actual word "conspiracy" is negative. So I'm trying to substitute that word with the more positive word "curiosity". I will start by giving the definition of the good old well-known "conspiracy" theory and go from there. Anyway you look at it, we can see individuals following and trying to figure out what's real and what's fake in these theories. To do this individuals will need the help of science, evidence, proof, and research. Question everything is my belief. And then question more. Some believers aren't willing or don't want to look to find the truth but in the end, it's not dangerous... it's actually pretty harmless. I found it's more to do with hanging out with a like-minded group of people and not being alone. It really is okay. With these theories there's a great deal of information out there for you to watch, read, and listen to. And you can then choose what to believe. And then there's the "Dunning - Kruger Effect" that just might explain a few things about how we take in information and how we may think the experts are real experts but turn out to know very little. Beware of that. Charlatans are everywhere trying desperately to get notoriety, fame, and money for their so-called knowledge. I talk about two "conspiracy" ("curiosity") theories and let you decide. Let some of my Call-To-Actions help you along. This is a get-together episode. Grab a drink and listen with your family and friends to have a robust conversation. It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... a government drone spying on you? 5 years ago Peter McIndoe thought up a conspiracy theory on a whim, and now, the Birds Aren't Real movement has hundreds of thousands of social media followers, branches in multiple cities, and a presence that is still confusing the major news networks. But how does a satirical conspiracy theory fit into the modern age of disinformation? Are there risks? Is the idea of "fighting lunacy, with lunacy" a breakthrough? Osita sits down to unpack the project of Republican grievance that has been built over the last few decades, boiling over into violence last 1/6. Osita explores how conservatives have been forced to grapple with seeing themselves as a political majority while they see the culture slip away from their values. First, he and Sam contextualize this within the last few decades, exploring how Senate Republicans have last represented a majority of voters in the 90s, despite holding a majority of seats about half of the time, and how this, along with a similar situation with the presidency, has allowed analysis to take over the right that ignores the structure of our political system, allowing them to interpret the electorate as conservative. They then dive into the narrative set up by this ideology, seeing any success of a progressive agenda on the electoral or cultural fronts as a result of Democratic conspiracy to undermine the conservative majority, and look at how Democratic institutionalists have internalized the fight for white moderate support as a necessity in politics, thus only working to reinforce this idea that they must constantly be catered to. They wrap up the interview by exploring how leftist organizing can work to do what the DNC won't, building infrastructure on the ground to create a base that fights for its majority representation without conceding to a moderate conservatism that is antithetical to its platform. Sam also touches on some upcoming court cases taking on testing mandates, vaccine mandates, and Congress's capacity for delegation. Then, Sam is joined by comedian Judy Gold, host of the Kill Me Now podcast, as she makes her 2022 MR debut! Judy and Sam take on the 1/6 anniversary, the conservative fear of actually saying “fuck you” to a president, and the state of having children in Omicron. And in the Fun Half, Sam touches on the oral arguments for the SCOTUS case on vaccine mandates, Teacher Lauren discusses the failure of localities to stand behind their teachers and students, and Dennis Prager reminds us that 1/6 insurrectionists were unarmed, metaphorically. Elon Musk's single lane, Tesla-only tunnel in Las Vegas turns out to not help congestion, Peter McIndoe preaches about the self-care of letting yourself breathe drone-free air, and Adam from OH-6 discusses a potential plan to run for Congress, plus, your calls and IMs! On January 21, 2017 protests and marches took place in Memphis, TN. In this mist of the political activism 23 year old Peter McIndoe held up a sign and began yelling "BIRDS AREN'T REAL". He explained that birds were exterminated by the US government between 1950-1970 and replaced with surveillance drones to spy on US citizens. Since then his movement has gained thousands of follows and they have even protested in front of Twitter headquarters in San Francisco. The only problem, it's a 100% known fabricated conspiracy hoax. This conspiracy has become Generations Z's stress response to rising conspiracy theories and misinformation. Listen as Vic tries to guess if this theory is even possible. Marcus suspects a certain military official could be behind the whole bird extermination. The conspiracy's leader claims their conspiracy is a safe place for people to decompress from other conspiracies and misinformation out there, however our hosts put that idea to the test. The extended episode of our shows is EXCLUSIVE to our patrons. Vic and Marcus react to the high level of production that has gone into this hoax conspiracy. Vic and Marcus give their ideas how to actually decompress when you feel overwhelmed by conspiracies. They talk about how to avoid falling to far down the rabbit hole.
