In Part 2 of Episode 50, I'm joined by two-time Tennessee PGA Teacher of the Year, Virgil Herring, and two-time PGA Tour winner, Rick Fehr. Virgil Herring is a graduate of Mississippi State's Professional Golf Management program and has earned the title of Middle Tennessee Section PGA Teacher of the Year five times, as well as Tennessee Teacher of the Year twice. He has worked with several Tour players, including Brandt Snedeker. In our conversation, Virgil shares stories about his time working with Snedeker, and we discuss Brandt's recent accolades—being named the recipient of the 2024 Payne Stewart Award and serving as an Assistant Captain at both this year's Presidents Cup and next year's Ryder Cup. Virgil also offers valuable advice on how to get your swing on the correct plane and how to reach a Flow State on the mental side of the game. Rick Fehr, who helped BYU win the national championship in 1981, was the low amateur at both the 1984 Masters and U.S. Open. After winning twice on the PGA Tour, Rick transitioned into becoming a top instructor. Rick and I dive into the topic of old-school versus new-school golf instruction. Have tools like Trackman and home simulators given us a false sense of knowledge about our game? He also shares his thoughts on Scottie Scheffler's claim that his mind is the strongest part of his game. We discuss whether trying harder or trying something different is the right approach, and Rick reflects on what it was like seeing himself on a trading card for the first time.
Meet Chris Ardolina - a multi-award-winning teaching professional at Cove Cay Golf Club in Clearwater, Florida. Chris became a scratch golfer at - wait for it - the age of 14. After deciding not to pursue professional golf, he decided to give teaching a go. He immediately fell in love with it and the rest is history. In today's episode, you'll learn: How to identify the root cause of your struggles AND develop an effective practice plan to overcome them. How to infuse both intention and purpose into your practice sessions to accelerate results. How to approach the mental and physical aspects of your warm-up and what differes compared to when you practice. The three-step accelerated improvement framework Chris uses with all of his clients to meet them where they're at and get them to where they want to be - fast. Plus, Chris shared the top priority to focus on when you're trying to break 90, break 80, and shoot scratch. Get your pencils ready and start listening. More About Chris Chris grew up in central New Jersey and started playing golf at the age of 12. By age 14, he started shooting "par" at his local public course and earned recognition as one of the top junior golfers in the area. Throughout high school, Chris played 4 years of varsity golf, and his 9-hole score of 3 under par 33 remains tied for the lowest in school history. Chris's pursuit of a golf-focused career led him to Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina where he majored in Business Administration with a concentration in Professional Golf Management. After graduating, he embarked on a journey with the Jim McLean Golf Schools in Miami, Florida, where his passion for teaching blossomed. He now owns and operates the Chris Ardolina Golf Academy out of Cove Cay Golf Club located in Clearwater, Florida. Beyond golf, Chris finds joy in playing ice hockey, tennis, yoga and biking along the scenic Tampa/Clearwater trails. Practice with intention and purpose, starting with small drills and gradually progressing to more challenging exercises. Create a focused warm-up routine to bring confidence and clarity to the first tee. Follow a three-step process for improvement: understand the current state, identify areas for improvement, and implement changes. As you progress in golf, shift your focus to more specific aspects of the game. Consistency is key for golfers looking to break 100. Eliminating big numbers and focusing on reducing penalty shots can lead to significant improvement. To break 90, golfers should work on their approach shots and aim for consistent distance control. Being able to get close to the green and give themselves a chance to make par or bogey is crucial. Breaking 80 requires hitting more greens and having a solid short game. Golfers should aim to make more pars and reduce the number of putts. Becoming a scratch golfer involves paying attention to the details and making good decisions on the course. Strategy and course management become more important at this level. Playing in tournaments requires practicing under pressure and being familiar with the rules. Many golfers struggle in tournaments because they are not used to playing with the same level of pressure and adherence to rules. Key Quotes: "You can go from hip high to shoulder to full swing all within that singular practice session" "I want you to take one to two practice swings for every ball that you hit" "The biggest thing that can help them create consistency and help them lose less golf balls or take less penalty shots." "Breaking 90 comes down to a lot of approach shots and consistent distance control." "To break 80, you need to hit more greens and have a solid short game." This week I'm joined by Champions Tour Pro and member of the University of Texas Hall of Honor Bob Estes, Pittsburgh native and now Director of Golf at the Golf Club of Houston Adam Lockwood, Top Instructor and Host of The Golf Kingdom TV Show Rob Strano, and Champions Tour Pro and 1987 US Amateur Champion Billy Mayfair. This week I got all four guys to weigh in on the rollback of the golf ball. It is certainly the hot topic around the game and will have reverberations for years to come. In addition to that: Bob Estes talks about his Texas Longhorns run at the National Championship in college football. We also talk about this season on the Champions Tour, the great history of men's golf at Texas, and the complicated formula for players to qualify to play on the Champions Tour. Adam Lockwood is from just outside of my hometown of Pittsburgh. He had a very successful high school golf career at Apollo-Ridge which launched him to attend PennWest California and enter their Professional Golf Management program. We get into that, the internships he did around the New York City area, and now being the Director of Golf at the Golf Club of Houston, the former site of the Houston Open. Rob Strano is one of the Top Instructors in our game plus the Host of The Golf Kingdom TV Show which you can check out on Amazon Fire, Roku TV, Blab TV, and Rob's YouTube Channel. He shares his thoughts on the rumors of the day including an interesting idea for what could happen if Jon Rahm defects to LIV and Rory moves to England. We also get a playing from his Time To Build segment and a pointer on Don't Be That Guy. Billy Mayfair and his wife Tami are two outstanding people. I got to spend some time with them on the practice tee prior to the Mitsubishi Electric Classic in Atlanta. Billy went out and had his best tournament of the year that week, which I'm totally taking credit for. Along with that, Billy shares memories from his win at the 1987 US Amateur Championship, the pressure of being an Arizona State grad standing on the 16th tee at the Waste Management Open knowing the fans can't wait to boo or cheer you. We also learn one of the best parts of playing in the Greater Milwaukee Open which had nothing to do with the golf and what it feels like to have how much money you earned publicized every week.

I often get asked the question of how do you turn your Instagram into cash. This question came up again during a recent talk I gave at Campbell university to the Professional Golf Management class, and the answer I gave in the moment I think was someone evasive. So I wanted to follow up on the many ways that having a professional Instagram profile can lead to monetary gain. It may not be in the sense that you just buy followers and trick people into advertising with you (I’m sure that has worked for many), but in a real way.
