Abbigail Kubiak, OTD, OTR/L, LRC is a Teaching Professional at Boston University's Sargent College in the online post-professional occupational therapy program and the founder of One Life Lived Well Occupational Therapy Services. She is dedicated to educating practitioners and advancing clinical excellence in emerging and innovative practice areas with a particular focus on Long COVID and other energy-limiting conditions. Her doctoral work explored the use of podcasts as a tool to enhance education, mentorship, and professional identity development in occupational therapy, particularly in areas of practice that are underrepresented or still emerging.

In Part 2 of Episode 50, I'm joined by Scott Munroe, Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher and one of the “Hoosiers” from the Two Hoosiers & a Hong crew. Scott is a longtime Teaching Professional at the ultra-exclusive Nantucket Golf Club in the summer. If you've ever wondered what golf looks like behind the gates of one of the most private clubs in the country, Scott takes us there. Nantucket has had members like Jack Welch and Bill Belichick, and the course was designed by our good friend Rees Jones, so the stories run deep. Scott also shares how he develops junior players in a way that may surprise you — teaching them backwards, starting on the putting green and working out toward the tee. It's a strategy we also heard from our friend Eva Rogers. Scott explains why it helps kids understand scoring, feel, and confidence faster than any launch monitor ever could. We also talk about the unique culture among great coaches in golf: the freedom and willingness to share knowledge, not guard it. No “secret sauce.” No holding back. Just helping each other help more players enjoy the game. And before we wrap, Scott gives us a few simple home drills to keep your swing loose and active during the colder months, so you don't feel like you're starting over when spring rolls back around. Welcome to the NYS AHPERD A-Z Health And PE Podcast. This is one of three episodes where we have invited special guests and students from summer courses I teach at Canisius University.  Students in this class entitled Capstone in Physical Education are graduate teacher candidates on the verge of student teaching either in the fall or this upcoming spring. Today, we have invited special guests from the NYC DOE and nearby area to discuss the teaching profession. Our graduate students have been asked to review some articles speaking to the teaching profession.Our first guest is Mr. Orlando Cordero.  Mr. Orlando Cordero is a dedicated advocate for education, currently serving as the President of the New York City ZONE for the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NYS AHPERD). In his role as a Physical Education Instructional Coach for the New York City Public Schools' Office of School Wellness Programs, Orlando plays a crucial role in shaping the educational landscape and promoting wellness initiatives.Sharing the stage with Mr. Cordero is Mr. Anthony Carrano. Anthony is an Instructional Lead with the New York City Department of Education, a Physical Education Adjunct Professor at Brooklyn College, a Martial Arts Instructor for the Hoteikan System, and a Climbing Conditioning Coach at Cliffs Climbing Gym. Prior to his current roles, Anthony served as the New York City President for the Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, taught Physical Education and Health to K-12 students and coached High School Track and Field for the Public-School Athletic League. He holds a School District Leader Certificate, a Masters in Kinesiology, is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the NSCA and is certified in the Science of Happiness from the Greater Good Science Center. And not to be outdone, our third guest is the one and only Ms. Laura Pizella.  Laura has been an educator for 30 years. Laura has been involved in many different facets of education. She has worked on many committees to improve the learning outcomes of middle school students in the South Bronx. She was part of a program that taught middle school students not only how to read and write better, but also how to contribute to society.. Laura is a huge believer, strong advocate and active at her professional association, New York State Association of health, physical education, recreation, and dance. She has held the position of Southeastern zone president, and is currently on the board of directors.

Gavin is a PGM Graduate from Campbell University and a PGA of America Golf Professional. If you are active on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, you may know him by a different name. He's the Chief Energy Officer (CEO) of Junior Golf! At the time of recording, over 10 million people have viewed the hashtag CEOofJuniorGolf on TikTok. What began as a goal of posting content every day for a year, has become a platform for elevating junior golf and HUMAN development in our current culture. Staying relevant, relatable, and real are some of the highlights of how Gavin uses his platform to impact the lives of the juniors he coaches and others who have their own golf aspirations.

In this special segment of the show I am joined by one of the Top PGA Club Professionals of our time, 1979 Ohio PGA Section Champion, and a member of the 2023 South Dakota Golf Hall of Fame Class, Rick Werner.  Rick and I start off by going back to his days at the University of South Dakota and the tremendous success he had there. We hear the story about the date he went on with Cheryl Ladd when they were in high school together. We hear the details of his victory in the 1979 Ohio PGA Section. We get into the time he spent as a Teaching Professional at Quaker Ridge Golf Club which is annually ranked among the top courses in the country. Rick talks about the other great Instructors he's learned from over the years including our good friend Jim McLean, plus John jacobs, Davis Love Jr., and Jackie Burke. We hear about the many rounds of golf he played with Gene Sarazen and Ken Venturi plus a fabulous story from when he was paired with the great Charlie Sifford. He met legendary Notre Dame Head Coach Ara Parseghian along his journeys and Rick talks about the influence Coach had on his life. Finally, you'll hear an emotional Rick talking about what it will mean to him when he gets inducted into the South Dakota Golf Hall of Fame this week.

TEACHING PROFESSIONAL, Chris Armanini joins the show.2- 18 HOLES CHAMPIONSHIP COURSES...The Royal Ka'anapali Course is one of only two courses in all of Hawaii designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The architect took advantage of the rolling landscape to create gently sloping fairways and large contoured greens to ensure a challenging approach to each hole. Stretching 6,700 yards, this par 71 course will challenge your club selection and putting skills. The Royal Ka'anapali Course begins at sea level with a par 5 hole extending 550 yards. The course hugs the shoreline before winding its way to the West Maui Mountain foothills. Arnold Palmer called the 18th hole (par 4) one of the best and most challenging finishing holes he'd ever played. The 449-yard hole plays longer than it looks, hugging the brackish water canal the entire length of the fairway and green, making it a memorable last hole.Along many holes on the Ka'anapali Kai Course lie natural canals, gulches and lava rock boundaries. The course is landscaped with native flowers along the trails like the hibiscus, bougainvillea and plumeria, as well as the Norfolk Pines and coconut trees that border many fairways. These features are part of what makes the course most enjoyable. Ka'anapali Kai Course was redesigned by Hawaii's most prolific golf course architect, Robin Nelson. Class A PGA Professional Jack Diehl joins me in the final segment. Jack has been a PGA Professional at great courses all across the country. He shares tips for how to play in different conditions across regions; from dry air in Arizona to thin are in Colorado, to heavy humid air in the South. Jack also talks about his new home at the Grey Stone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama site of the Regions Tradition a major on the Champions Tour.

The Birdies & Bourbon team had a blast chatting with Pete Kelbel on the PGA Tour, Justin Thomas, golf in Michigan and more. Pete Kelbel is a 3rd generation professional golfer, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, both of whom had distinguished careers as teaching professionals. From a very early age, Pete accompanied his dad to Harbor Point Golf Club where he would help out around the course with jobs such as picking up balls from the range and washing golf clubs. After a spell as a caddy, Pete started playing with ‘sawed-off’ clubs and by the age of 14 shot his first even-par round. Pete joined the Professional ranks whilst still at college and successfully completed his PGA Apprenticeship. Initially based in South Florida an opportunity arose at Walloon Lake Country Club in Petoskey, Michigan. After several years going back and forth between Florida and Michigan, Pete finally settled in Michigan and has now been the professional at Walloon Lake for just over 30 years. In addition to his full diary as a Teaching Professional, Pete is very passionate about junior golf and coaches both the girls and boys teams at Harbor Springs High School, taking great pride in their performances at school and then at college. Pete also writes for WomensGolf.com in which he analyses the swings of the top LPGA players. Walloon Lake Country Club Walloon Lake, located just to the South West of the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan in the United States, has a long and rich history. The Walloon Lake Country Club was established in 1904 with an initial 9 hole configuration. In 1925 the golf course was expanded to 18 holes after the purchase of adjoining land. In 1990, after finally securing approval from the members, the golf course expanded once again. Today, the 18 hole course provides an excellent test of golf with well-tended fairways and fast greens, with terrific views of Walloon Lake and the surrounding countryside. A regular visitor to the Club is the 8-time major winner Tom Watson, who as a youngster used to play at the club when his family spent the summer months at Walloon Lake. The Watson Cup, the annual invitational golf tournament at Walloon Lake, is named in his honor. Nick Juzdan sat down on June 10, 2020 with Brooklyn Native Tia Rose. Tia has been a Special Education Teacher in East New York Brooklyn for 7 years. She is currently teaching Reading Intervention for grades 6 - 8. She currently serves as the Special Education Department Chairperson for AFYW. She is also a freelance writer for NU Origins Magazine - an online black content magazine for the diaspora. She is dedicated to making an educational impact for our black and brown students.

Crystal is a mother, motivational speaker, media personality, and also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority inc. She is a strong advocate in her community and believes in uplifting and empowering others to be the success and not the statistic.
