He reminds us that, as someone who trains the next generation of operators, he needs to be cruel on occasion—not to be kind, but for the greater good.

TEACHING PROFESSIONAL, Chris Armanini joins the show.2- 18 HOLES CHAMPIONSHIP COURSES...The Royal Ka'anapali Course is one of only two courses in all of Hawaii designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The architect took advantage of the rolling landscape to create gently sloping fairways and large contoured greens to ensure a challenging approach to each hole. Stretching 6,700 yards, this par 71 course will challenge your club selection and putting skills. The Royal Ka'anapali Course begins at sea level with a par 5 hole extending 550 yards. The course hugs the shoreline before winding its way to the West Maui Mountain foothills. Arnold Palmer called the 18th hole (par 4) one of the best and most challenging finishing holes he'd ever played. The 449-yard hole plays longer than it looks, hugging the brackish water canal the entire length of the fairway and green, making it a memorable last hole.Along many holes on the Ka'anapali Kai Course lie natural canals, gulches and lava rock boundaries. The course is landscaped with native flowers along the trails like the hibiscus, bougainvillea and plumeria, as well as the Norfolk Pines and coconut trees that border many fairways. These features are part of what makes the course most enjoyable. Ka'anapali Kai Course was redesigned by Hawaii's most prolific golf course architect, Robin Nelson. This course focuses on strategy of your round, not necessarily distance or strength, which is why this course is enjoyed by both the beginner and avid golfer.CALL 808.661.3691 TO INQUIRE.

The Birdies & Bourbon team had a blast chatting with Pete Kelbel on the PGA Tour, Justin Thomas, golf in Michigan and more. Pete Kelbel is a 3rd generation professional golfer, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, both of whom had distinguished careers as teaching professionals. From a very early age, Pete accompanied his dad to Harbor Point Golf Club where he would help out around the course with jobs such as picking up balls from the range and washing golf clubs. After a spell as a caddy, Pete started playing with ‘sawed-off’ clubs and by the age of 14 shot his first even-par round. Pete joined the Professional ranks whilst still at college and successfully completed his PGA Apprenticeship. Initially based in South Florida an opportunity arose at Walloon Lake Country Club in Petoskey, Michigan. After several years going back and forth between Florida and Michigan, Pete finally settled in Michigan and has now been the professional at Walloon Lake for just over 30 years. In addition to his full diary as a Teaching Professional, Pete is very passionate about junior golf and coaches both the girls and boys teams at Harbor Springs High School, taking great pride in their performances at school and then at college. Pete also writes for WomensGolf.com in which he analyses the swings of the top LPGA players. Walloon Lake Country Club Walloon Lake, located just to the South West of the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan in the United States, has a long and rich history. The Walloon Lake Country Club was established in 1904 with an initial 9 hole configuration. In 1925 the golf course was expanded to 18 holes after the purchase of adjoining land. In 1990, after finally securing approval from the members, the golf course expanded once again. Today, the 18 hole course provides an excellent test of golf with well-tended fairways and fast greens, with terrific views of Walloon Lake and the surrounding countryside. A regular visitor to the Club is the 8-time major winner Tom Watson, who as a youngster used to play at the club when his family spent the summer months at Walloon Lake. The Watson Cup, the annual invitational golf tournament at Walloon Lake, is named in his honor. In addition to the golf course, the Walloon Lake Country Club also offers: Professional Golf Lessons with Pete Kelbel Professional Tennis Tuition and 4 tennis courts A varied activity program for children including swimming and sailing Information from golfingherald.com. Please check Pete out online on instagram @petekelbelgolf Thank you for taking the time listen to the Birdies & Bourbon Show for all things PGA Tour, golf, gear, bourbon and mixology. Getting Better Now from the Golf Business Network with Dean Kandle, PGA
In this episode we're joined by Jason Sutton, aka “The Golf Guru”, who is the Director of Instruction at Carmel Country Club in North Carolina and the host of the appropriately titled podcast, “The Golf Guru” show. But long before Jason was putting out 90+ episodes of his show, he was building a following online and developing his own brand, which as we talk about, has paid major dividends. He’s a personal development junkie and as we walk through his story, we find out how his commitment to learning and growing inside and outside of golf has led him to the successful spot he’s in right now. Jason is open about one of lower points of his career and I think all of our listeners should tune into this part of his story. It’s an invaluable lesson and reminder that many times in order to achieve our goals, we need to experience some failures and learn from those lessons. Jason loves to mentor young golf coaches and we get into how you would know if you’re meant to be a full time golf coach and what all young coaches should do first, if they want to get better. So no matter where you are in this industry and what type of Golf Professional you are, this is a great conversation with a lot of insight. Check out Jason's podcast, The Golf Guru Show, and stay tuned for his new show "Coaching Better Now" which is part of the new Instructor Division of the Golf Business Network. www.golfbusinessnetwork.comwww.golfprofessionalgrowth.com

Dennis Bergevin and I have a lot in common. He's a bass player. Me too. He taught public school orchestra. So did I. His career has taken an unexpected turn. I totally identify with that. For Dennis, it was the interactions with the students that he found most valuable. Not that the music wasn't important, but helping young people to find their path in life was what really mattered to him. I agree 100%. By the way, Dennis is a rockin' bass player. Check out this video of him playing Bach. So Dennis has transitioned out of that orchestra director role and is now training to work in guidance at the college level. It’s amazing the opportunities that exist at the university level outside of being a professor, and how critical the people in roles like what Dennis is doing are to shaping the direction of student’s lives. I also like this photo of Dennis and Edgar Meyer! Learn more about my coverage of music teaching at contrabassconversations.com/teaching. Topic: Highs and Lows of Building a NYC Schools STEM /STEAM Pipeline Guest: Scott Krivitsky “I have been an educator for 12 years and recently was awarded Teacher of the Year by the Daily News and Department of Education. Also, I was spotlighted in the National Educational Alliance Magazine for creating a STEM Pipeline that bridges elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges, and workforce development organizations. This model for education has never been done in New York City before. I would love to be on your team to help Empower our Teachers and Schools. We need to bring back Creativity and Spontaneity to our Classrooms. ” What issues do you feel are most critical for our union? “The biggest issue is that our teachers have lost a Voice in Education. Once again, we need to create a safe teaching environment, where teachers bring fun back into the classroom without fear of being micromanaged by administration. Educators are the pulse of our schools and deserve the respect of being a Teaching Professional. As educators, we need to bring back Pride into Teaching. I will help Impact Education for the Better for our Teachers.”

Unlike the traditional approach to ethics education that involves reading, writing, and discussing moral reasoning in the abstract, our new pedagogy uses experiential games to position students in situations that require first-hand ethical decision-making. The games allow students to personally explore what factors prevent them from living up to their moral ideals, and what strategies are effective for coordinating groups to address collective-action problems, where personal incentives are at odds with the group’s best interests. Each game consists of complete and independent modules that can be combined to form undergraduate & graduate level courses in sustainability ethics. Furthermore, both the modules and the course are deliverable in a synchronous (or semi-synchronous) fashion at multiple Universities, wherein students at multiple campuses interact on-line through game play. The games can also be played entirely in-class, in blended learning environments (online and in-class), or completely online. This novel multi-campus form of instruction allows students to be mentored by multiple instructors from different disciplines.

Founders Message- Thank you for your interest in the Swingdicator. If you are anything like me you probably love to golf and you’re on a constant quest to improve your game. After getting all sorts of advice on how to improve my swing and trying every swing aid on the market, I was left confused and frustrated. I took that information overload and distilled it down to a simple program that really works using my little plastic invention we call the Swingdicator.I’ve lost a leg to diabetes and there are millions of others who are suffering from this debilitating disease. At Swingdicator we are pledging a good portion of our proceeds to diabetes research. I want to personally thank you for joining us in our two-fold mission to cure your golf swing and at the same time cure diabetes. Thanks!Steve PorterThe Swingdicator System is an incredibly easy to use yet remarkably effective golf swing training aid that can help anyone from beginner to pro improve their golf games. The Swingdicator System consists of the Swingdicator swing aid and an instructional DVD starring PGA Tour Professional, Scott Verplank. When used together, the Swingdicator System produces undeniable results. In the DVD, PGA Tour Winner, Scott Verplank, and Teaching Professional ,E.J. Pfister, reveal the many uses of the Swingdicator. If you would like to improve any of these elements of your game:PROPER GRIPTARGET ALIGNMENTSWING PLANE (eliminate that slice or hook)SHORT GAMEBUNKER SHOTSthen you need the Swingdicator System. The primary advantages of the Swingdicator over other swing aids are simplicity and portability. A Swingdicator is about the size of most divot repair tools and comfortably slides between the ring and middle finger of the non-dominant hand. This compact size allows it be taken anywhere to quickly tune up a swing on the driving range or on the course. Many PGA teaching pros that have tested the product consider it to be the easiest and most effective swing aid on the market. www.swingdicator.comClick here for information on Golf-A-Palooza 2009 with Mike and Billy!Avila Beach Golf Resort - www.avilabeachresort.com Blacklake Golf Resort - www.blacklake.comInn at Avila Beach - www.avilabeachca.comAvila LaFonda Hotel - www.avilalafondahotel.comGolfland Warehouse - www.golflandwarehouse.comSlickstix - www.slickstix.comFor more information on Golf Talk Radio with Mike & Billy visit www.golftalkradio.com and visit www.centralcoasttoday.com for Golf Talk TV with Mike & Billy.
In 1950, Jim Flick was a scratch golfer in his second year at Wake Forest—and not good enough to make a starting team that included Arnold Palmer and Buddy Worsham. Flick's roommate was his best friend, Gene Scheer; Palmer's was Worsham. One evening, after a home football game against Duke, Scheer and Worsham got impatient waiting for Flick and Palmer and drove without them to a dance in Durham.Coming home, their car crashed and both perished. Flick and Palmer, feeling their lives were spared and trying to overcome their grief, decided to room together. Thus, Palmer was one of the first major influences on Flick's career.Flick lettered in basketball and golf, but turned his attention to golf instruction. Although Bill Strausbaugh was an early influence, Bob Toski had a special effect. Toski and Flick developed the Golf Digest Schools from 1972-'90. Flick also spent 20 years as director of instruction at Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, where he helped Tom Lehman go from a struggling Hogan Tour player to the 1996 British Open champion. In 1990, Flick worked with Jack Nicklaus at The Tradition tournament. Jack won the event, and Flick has been his coach ever since.Today, Flick is director of instruction at the TaylorMade Learning Center. "I'm more of a motion teacher than a position teacher," he says. "I advocate swinging the arms and club with the body reacting." www.jimflick.comCasey Martin was born in Eugene, Oregon and still resides there. Educated at Stanford University, and briefly a teammate of Tiger Woods, Casey was three times all Pac-10 and also a member of the University's NCAA Championship team in 1994. He won the 1993 Sahalee Players Championship, and after turning professional in 1995 Casey competed in several PGA and Nationwide tour events. While pursuing his professional golf career Casey came to national prominence in the late 90's by suing the PGA of America to allow him permission to use a golf cart while playing. Suffering from birth with a defect in his leg know as Klippel Trenaunay Weber syndrome, Martin feels the daily effect of this rare circulatory disorder that withered his right leg to the point that may eventually force him to face amputation. Although Casey won his lower federal court decision to utilize a cart in competition, many PGA professionals took opposites sides of the decision and the debate still exists as to the extent that "disabilities" should be consisted and accommodated on the professional golf tour. An interesting irony to this circumstance exists since many Senior or Champion PGA tour players exercise the option to compete while utilizing carts on the "Senior Tour." In spite of the controversy, Casey maintained a positive attitude and has been described by many as honoring the game and facing his circumstance with both "courage" and "dignity".Now the Head Men's Golf Coach at the University of Oregon since 2006, Martin continues to impact others golf game and life circumstances. Many know Rick Smith the golf instructor, but few know about his accolades as a player. He never lost a match at Upper St. Clair High School near Pittsburgh, he qualified for the 1983 U.S. Open at Oakmont, and in 1980 he shot a 61 in the PGA's club professional Playing Ability Test."I learned a lot working for Walker Inman at Scioto Country Club, and he believed that to be a great teacher of the game, you had to be a pretty good player," says Smith. "I still love playing golf. So much, I've actually thought about playing on the Champions Tour when I turn 50."Ever since he used to pass instruction notes to high school teammates and give lessons to a then 14-year-old Lee Janzen, Smith says his time spent on the lesson tee is his favorite part of the day.RICK SMITHMASTER TEACHING PROFESSIONAL TO THE PGA TOUR’S BEST!Rick Smith, CEO and President of Rick Smith Enterprises, Inc., has achieved great success in golf as a teacher, designer and communicator. Dave is a playing and teaching professional in Orange County California. He has obsessively been studying the golf swings of the games greatest players and the teachings of what are considered to be the world's best teachers for the past 30 years. As Dave's teaching philosophy developed he realized that the “true” secret of the golf swing is the clubface and the ability of the golfer to control it throughout the entire golf swing. The majority of golfers in the world do not have a good understanding of the clubface position throughout the swing. Dave made the clubface position throughout the entire golf swing the center piece of his professional instruction, which resulted in his students achieving greater success much more quickly.www.clubfacegolf.comAvila Beach Golf Resort - www.avilabeachresort.com Blacklake Golf Resort - www.blacklake.comInn at Avila Beach - www.avilabeachca.comAvila LaFonda Hotel - www.avilalafondahotel.comGolfland Warehouse - www.golflandwarehouse.comSlickstix - www.slickstix.comFor more information on Golf Talk Radio with Mike & Billy visit www.golftalkradio.com and visit www.centralcoasttoday.com for Golf Talk TV with Mike & Billy.
