Sustainable practices, by definition, seek to maintain the same, whereas regenerative practices recognize that natural systems are currently impacted and it applies management techniques to restore the system to improved productivity. Regenerative and sustainable actions can use essentially the same practices, the difference is the application and the management of those tools. Farmers are faced with skyrocketing input costs, declining product efficiency and industry pressure to implement sustainable and regenerative practices. The speaker will argue that revolutionary biological products have the ability to increase input efficiency, reduce reliance on chemical products, restore soil health and enable farmers to produce higher quality crops, sustainably. Speaker: Joshua Day Chief Joshua Day Chief is Chief Executive Officer of AdvancedAg (AAG). Since 2013, he has propelled the company's growth through groundbreaking research projects that have helped redefine biological technology in the agriculture industry. Collaborating closely with dealers, suppliers, and end-users, Joshua addresses soil and water remediation with a collaborative team approach, positioning AAG as a global leader in sustainable agricultural solutions. Joshua advocates for a future where Canadian agriculture thrives sustainably. As a visionary leader, environmental advocate, and community builder, Joshua is steering AdvancedAg towards a future where innovative solutions coexist with the principles of sustainability. An unwavering advocate for environmental stewardship, Joshua's leadership extends beyond AAG. Recognized with the Honouring Excellence – Rising Star Award in 2020 by Lethbridge College, Joshua was later elected to serve on the Lethbridge College Board of Governors, contributing to the development of future leaders. In 2018, he received the Alumni Achievement Award from the Canadian Environmental Technology Advancement Corporation, solidifying his commitment to advancing environmental technologies.

Community television programming is considered an important source for information and provides a reflection of local realities that few other television services currently showcase. All programming on Rogers TV must be “Community Programming”, which is defined by CRTC regulations as programming that refers directly to the community, which could be defined as the station's contours, broadcasting distribution undertakings service area, municipality, census metropolitan area or census agglomeration; and is produced by the personnel of the local station, independent local producers or members of the community for the local station. The CRTC oversees broadcasters and television service providers and has determined that the role of the community channel should be primarily of a public service nature, facilitating self-expression through free and open access by members of the community. The speaker will delve into more of the details, but among other policy goals, the Community Television Policy states that the community channel should engender a high level of citizen participation and community involvement in community programming and provide a reasonable, balanced opportunity for the expression of differing views on matters of public concern. Speaker: Ryan Cradduck Ryan is an experienced producer with a demonstrated history of working in the telecommunications and retail industries. Skilled in Management, Customer Service, Voiceovers, Creativity Skills, and Knowledge Sharing. The Lethbridge Drug Treatment Court is contained within the criminal justice system and operates within the same legal framework that governs all adult criminal court proceedings in the Provincial Court of Alberta. The drug court operates based on a guilty plea with a delayed sentencing process (s.720 (2) of the Criminal Code) with entry being dependent on the consent of the Crown, Court, and the Accused. The Lethbridge Drug Treatment Court program is founded on national and international principles for drug treatment courts, is committed to community justice and restoration and are a support service program under the direction of McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association. The speaker will talk about what the court is, how it operates, and the expectations and model of the program.   Speaker:   Chelsey De Groot and Brett Carlson           My Blackfoot name is Naamiitaapii Aahkkoiyiiniimaki. I hold a Master of Arts in Leadership, Bachelor of Applied Arts in Justice Studies, and a Diploma in Child and Youth Care and General Studies. I have spent the past 15 years working with vulnerable populations in various capacities such as family preservation, youth mentorship, as well as with individuals experiencing homelessness. My career shifted to the Supervised Consumption Site where I created and lead a program called I'taamohkanoohsin, meaning “everyone comes together. This program was created in partnership with Blackfoot Elders and the Lethbridge Police to assist vulnerable, street involved individuals in re-connecting to their culture. This program also allowed us to travel to surrounding communities to share knowledge about the Blackfoot people. I'taamohkanoohsin expanded to our Hip Hop for Healing program which allowed vulnerable people to create, record and perform their music, creating a space for alternative healing through music. I am also an Instructor at the Lethbridge College, teaching inmates at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre and Medicine Hat Remand Centre and The Regional Director for Drug Treatment Courts in Southern Alberta.   Brett Carlson earned a BA from the University of Regina, later graduating with an LLB from the University of Victoria. Starring All-American legend John Wayne in full Fu Manchu make-up as Mongol madman Genghis Khan! Featuring sultry seductress Susan Hayward as his lover!  Killing John Wayne (Lyons Press, 2021) is the true story of The Conqueror (1956), the worst movie ever made. Filmed during the dark underbelly of the 1950s—the Cold War—when nuclear testing in desolate southwestern landscapes was a must for survival, the very same landscapes were where exotic stories set in faraway lands could be made. Just 153 miles from the St. George, Utah, set, nuclear bombs were detonated regularly at Yucca Flat and Frenchman Flat in Nevada, providing a bizarre and possibly deadly background to an already surreal moment in cinema history. This book tells the full story of the making of The Conqueror, its ignominious aftermath, and the radiation induced cancer that may have killed John Wayne and many others. Celia has also completed an additional bachelor's degree of Science in Horticulture, basically proving that her love of tea and plants is no passing fancy. With an encyclopedic knowledge of plants and their various impacts on individuals as well as the planet, Celia has committed most of her time to the proliferation of tea and plant knowledge. As a trained Tea Sommelier, she brings joy to those around her by sharing a cup of tea with anyone and everyone, at any time. Fun fact: she lived in Japan for three months studying matcha production and the Japanese tea ceremony, so quiz her, she loves it!

People increasingly spend a lot of time looking at screens and particularly so during these past two years of the Covid pandemic. Social media chatter and news on computers, phones and other devices have become a big part of our lives. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are two technologies that are changing the way we use screens, while creating new and exciting interactive experiences. Virtual reality uses a headset to place you in a computer-generated world that you can explore. Rather than transporting you to a computer-generated world, augmented reality overlays digital content on top of the physical world using a wearable headset of mobile device. The speaker will explain the exciting world of VR/AR and discuss the consequences of this ever-expansive technology.   Speaker:  Michael McCready   Mike McCready is educator and researcher with a focus on immersive technologies such as virtual and augmented reality. He has over 20 years of development and is driven to explore new technologies and understand their application within business and society. He introduced one of the first VR development course at Lethbridge College in 2016 when he taught students to develop mobile VR games. One of Mike's focuses is the social interactions made possible with VR and has planned and facilitated numerous social VR activities that have garnered national and international attention, included the world's first full-day conference held in VR – Merging Realities. Mike is also the Program Research Chair of the Spatial Technologies Applied Research and Training (START) centre at Lethbridge College. In this role he works with organizations to integrate immersive technologies to their workflow to improve organizational effectiveness.

Race is a central concept in the subordination of Black people in Canada and the United States (U.S.). Yet, race has not always been considered to be a vital research variable in studies in North America. The speaker will explore how and why storytelling and counter-narrative has emerged as a methodology to unpack race, racism, belonging, and power in a settler-colonial nation-state like Canada. In other words, Storytelling develops as a fundamental methodology in Critical Race Theory tradition exposing the daily encounters of racism experienced by people of colour in societies that are colour-blind and race neutral like Canada and the U.S.   Speaker: Ibrahim Turay              Ibrahim Turay is a full-time faculty in the School of Justice Studies at Lethbridge College and a Ph.D. Candidate in Cultural, Social, and Political Thought at the University of Lethbridge. In October 2020, the Federal Government announced its 2021-2022 Immigration Level Plan. The government is hoping to bring a targeted 1.2 million immigrants into the country to help the Canadian economy recover from the Covid-19 pandemic and drive future growth.   Canada is often referred to as a land of immigrants because of the millions of newcomers who have settled there since the first colonies were built by the English and the French on Indigenous territories. However, despite this history of immigration, many immigrants encounter discrimination and social exclusion upon their arrival.   Much of the discrimination and difficulty encountered originate in common myths and beliefs held by those already living in Canada. In this presentation we will visit the new Immigration Level Plan introduced by the Federal government to shed light on the different immigration categories and discuss the reasons for this increase to immigration targets. Along the way we will try to bust common myths about newcomers to Canada. We will also explore some of the challenge's newcomers face during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Speaker:    Najib Mangal               Najib Mangal is manager of Community Connections and Employment programs at Immigrant Services of Lethbridge Family Services. He is an accredited settlement practitioner with 15 years of experience in settlement and integration of newcomers into Lethbridge. He graduated with a degree in Information Technology in 2006 from the Lethbridge College and recently completed his Immigration Consultancy program through the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultancy.

Over the past two years, tenths of millions of public education dollars have been cut from Lethbridge's two post-secondary institutions budgets, resulting initially in hundreds of directly lost jobs and as well, hefty increases in tuition for students. Arguably, there are also many indirect economic and knowledge losses to consider in the longer term. The speaker will make clear that the myriad of issues related to these severe government cuts (more are promised in 2022) are not only about short-term economics, but also connected to the importance of great quality and affordable post-secondary education that will keep Lethbridge an attractive community for individuals, families and businesses to be located. (Photo courtesy of Cybera, and used with permission.) Merging Realities 2021 is just about to happen. Hosted by Lethbridge College, in Alberta, Canada, this free annual virtual conference is a groundbreaker. Speakers explore the latest developments in the virtual and augmented-reality fields. This year's conference, themed "Impact", will showcase different aspects of the use of these technologies in daily life. "(VR is) not just for gaming. It has many applications,"says Lethbridge College's Kris Hodgson-Bright, Kris is a faculty member in Digital Communications and Media, as well as Multimedia Production. He is also part of the organizing committee for Merging Realities. And Merging Realities is a trailblazer because, in 2018, Lethbridge College debuted it as the world's first conference hosted entirely in virtual reality. Since then, the pandemic has pushed immersive technologies to center stage. In our 2019 conversation, Kris explained that Lethbridge was planning two new certificate programs in immersive media. Those have now evolved into two intensive study programs, accessible all over the world. Kris offered an update of Lethbridge's work in immersive technologies, previewed Merging Realities 2021: Impact and discussed some of the ways he sees XR evolving to become students' future careers. On this edition of Over Coffee®, we cover: An update of Lethbridge College's two new immersive programs and the ways the faculty have put their applied research in XR to use; What attendees will experience, when they virtually attend Merging Realities: Impact; A closer look at some of the VR programs the conference will be covering; How Lethbridge College has put immersive technologies to work in different sectors; The ways in which some of the new uses are changing common perceptions of virtual reality; How to overcome the "intimidation factor" when introducing newcomers to VR; What students will experience when they enroll in one of Lethbridge College's one-year certificate immersive media programs; The career options available to students who enroll in these programs; Kris' own use of VR applications; What's next, for Merging Realities; How newcomers to XR can start using immersive environments in their fields; How Lethbridge College can help!
