Our guest today is Kelly Dempsey – a sustainable fashion designer and Project Runway Season 14 runner-up. She has become a leading voice for sustainability and equitability in the fashion industry and has been featured on Good Morning American and in Marie Claire.Born and raised in Munsen, MA, Kelly taught herself to upcycle when she was 9 years old. Bullied in school, she used these experiences to eventually launch a terrifically successful career. Her passion for upcycling has led her to numerous opportunities - several of which are her courses on sewing and upcycling. When not teaching or creating, Kelly loves to be in nature. She currently lives in Boston with her boyfriend of 10 years.(1:34) How did Kelly learn to sew? As a 9-year-old she started to experiment! As a kid she would shop at the secondhand store two doors down and since she was in a small town…she inevitably ended up buying her school mate's clothes. This led to some pretty intense bullying. So…she experimented and learned to make her own clothing.(3:45) In the bullying she experienced, Kelly said it ignited her to be strong. Listen as she gives advice to those who are being bullied today.(5:17) And then there's “Kelly from the Deli” who stared on Project Runway. Here's her story about this adventure. And…she got a surprise email to be on the show.(7:10) While on Project Runway, Kelly took Tim Gunn to the Deli where she had worked. She had often dreamed of this…and 10 years to the day she first thought of it…he was there!(8:00) How did she finally get to be on the show. Well after sleeping in her car many times…she never gave up. She takes us on the journey.(9:30) She was he only self-taught designer on the show…she explains how this felt and how it motivated her!(10:28) Kelly takes us behind the scenes of Project runway and shares with us the different requirements. And how she had to put her life on hold for the duration of filming the show.(13:30) Kelly talks about fast fashion and how it adds to pollution worldwide. 1 in four people in the world are garment workers…and most are women. She describes the conditions they work in. (18:20) What can we as consumers do with the clothing we no longer need? Kelly explains the theory of shopping our closets. She also talks about her “Mittens for Good” initiative sponsored by BERNINA.(20:58) Kelly explains upcycling and how to get started.(22:44) Mettler Thread https://www.amann-mettler.com/en/ and Kelly just completed one of her very favorite upcycling projects. She talks about this and some of her other favorite projects.(25:06) She takes us through the process she follows to create her courses.(26:11) Kelly's heard “NO” many times…she tells us abut how she worked her way through a few of these times. Starting with sending 50 emails a day! What you're seeking is seeking you!(28:14) So, what's next? How about being an ambassador for the New York Fashion Act?! https://www.thefashionact.org/ But wait...there's more!(30:00) What's her dream?!(30:28) And what didn't I ask? Well, how about her being on a billboard in Time Square during New York Fashion Week?! There was definitely Karma involved!(31:55) To reach out to Kelly go to her Face Book and Instagram. Have you sometimes felt stuck trying to move forward in your career or business? Have you struggled to figure out what you wanted to do when times got tough? Loving and choosing to live your life isn't one that should be dictated by life's circumstances but by intentional action and internal clarity. My guest today is someone who chooses to live life intentionally and creatively with some unexpected twists and turns she leveraged for the best. Merline Labissiere started from humble beginnings, following her passions into the world of fashion design and ultimately being awarded a spot on the Emmy Winning Show Project Runway for 2 seasons. In this episode, Merline discusses her secret to designing the life you want and overcoming some unexpected roadblocks. We also dig deep into other topics such as strategic pivoting, clarifying your goals, and how to uncover new streams of income. You don't want to miss this energetic, inspirational, and highly informative interview. About Merline: Merline Labissiere, a Miami- based designer, fell in love with the idea of marrying architecture and fashion design at an early age. The young Haitian-American designer graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a bachelor's degree in Fashion Design in 2011. Although pursuing a degree in architecture brought her to SCAD, Merline discovered fashion was the fuel to her creative passion. Her architectural background continues to inspire her designs and other avenues of art. As a Project Runway Season 14 contestant airing on Lifetime, Merline got the opportunity to design a winning look that was manufactured and sold nationwide for Heid Klum's intimate's line. Along with her passion for fashion, her brand “Merline Labissiere” started a non-profit teaching fashion in inner-city youth. Recently, she has given presentations on her journey in entrepreneurship and starting a non-profit to students and alumni at the SCAD Museum of Art. Merline's passion to combine fashion and architecture and show the world a new perspective appears in every piece designed for the creative woman working in a professional environment.

A decade ago, Nancy Volpe-Beringer's growing professional success resulted in her creativity being stifled. Inspired by her sons' drives to follow their own creative dreams, she decided to pursue her own. Growing up, she always loved sewing, and her interest in vintage and thrift shopping ignited her love for fashion. At age 58, Nancy took a risk and left her career at the pinnacle of her success to enroll in a master's program at Drexel University in hopes to reignite her passion for fashion. Since graduating in 2016, Nancy has been designing under her label and defines her all-inclusive aesthetic as wearable, androgynous art for all shapes and sizes, working out of her Philadelphia studio. Her designs have been featured at Philadelphia Fashion Week and regularly in Philadelphia's iconic fashion concept store, Joan Shepp. Her collections have shown throughout fashion shows including the March 2019 Wharton Fashion Show, December 2018 Joan Shepp Holiday Pop Up, and the October 2018 Libertae Fashion Show. Her desire to “pay it forward” results in her being the featured designer at many community-sponsored fashion events, including the 2018 and 2019 Salvation Army Garbage Bag Gala. She has mentored for the Refugee Women's Textile Cooperative (RWTC), a program that empowers refugee women with sewing and textile skills. Nancy currently sells her pieces online, in local boutiques, and custom designs couture for private clients, including 2019 Grammy nominee Tierra Whack; which won her a “Best in Philly” fashion design award. Nancy takes pride in her craftsmanship and artistry, turning fantasy in to fashion with her unique designs. She hopes that her appearance as the oldest contestant ever to compete on “Project Runway” will jump -start the expansion of her brand, and help her inspire others to follow their passion, regardless of age or circumstances. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/steven-cuoco0/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steven-cuoco0/support

Ashley has always loved fashion since she was a little girl, learning how to sew from her grandma who is one of her biggest inspirations. Growing up plus size, Ashley often felt very frustrated that there were no clothes out there to reflect her self expression of how she felt on the inside... she longed for clothes to wear that were fun, in fashion, and told the story she wanted to tell about her personality. So since they didn’t exist, she started making her own. That journey led her to Project Runway where she became the first person to win for designing plus size. After winning, she got her own line at JCPenny and was flooded with opportunities... at the same time she decided she wanted to get weight loss surgery to feel better and healthier. She said it was very difficult being criticized for this decision and losing deals on top of it bc people thought she was “selling out.” This led Ashley to a period of feeling lost and having to reevaluate. We talk about why she started teaching “self love” courses and how she has found her way in fashion making custom masks and offering sewing classes and flower crown courses to teach others how to design and create. Ashley’s story is one of determination, strength, beauty, inclusivity, creativity and paving her own way. In 2000, he was accepted to the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC where he gained an extensive knowledge of design, draping, illustration, pattern making, and sewing. Kayne graduated magna cum laude and won the acclaimed "Critics Choice Award "for evening wear.Upon returning to Nashville after graduation in 2002, he opened Kayne's Clothing boutique where he created custom designs for pageant clients, dancers, and country music artists. A year later he moved his custom design business to Norman, Oklahoma and bought an established formal wear boutique. He quickly gained a following of devoted pageant clients which put his custom designs under the spotlight and in front of judges. This strengthened his focus on the fit, silhouette, flow, and movement of his designs. As a successful fashion designer and business owner, Kayne was selected to compete on Project Runway Season 3 in 2006, where he placed in the Top 5 designers. This experience, his charming personality, and eye for glamorous style propelled Kayne to his own celebrity status. He launched the Johnathan Kayne dress line and award winning shoe line produced by Benjamin Walk Corporation in 2007. Kayne starred on the TLC special Gown Crazy in 2009, and has also appeared on E!, ABC, NBC, Bravo, and The StyleNetwork. In 2012, Kayne competed on the second season of Project Runway All Stars on Lifetime television where he developed a friendship with competing designer Joshua McKinley. This spawned a collaboration collection “Johnathan Kayne by Joshua McKinley” marking the first time in history that two Project Runway alum have collaborated on a collection. Kayne also moved his home and business back to Nashville, TN with a focused plan to be the Red Carpet Designer of the South.Kayne continues to design the Johnathan Kayne dress and shoe collections. He also serves as a fashion expert for Country Weekly, Zuus Country, and NStyle Country. In episode 160, Kestrel welcomes Nathalia JMag, the designer behind her eponymous label, to the show. Nathalia is a luminary at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and was part of Project Runway Season 15. In addition to running her made-to-order brand Nathalia JMag, she is currently finishing her Masters degree at RISD in Nature Culture and Sustainability. “Overall, fashion needs to be more inclusive, but because we’re doing sustainable fashion, we should be ahead of the game. Like we’re already ahead of the game in fashion, so we need to get ahead even more in the sense that we need to be more inclusive of everyone.” -Nathalia JMag, designer On this week’s show, Nathalia shares more on her background, how she got exposed to sustainable fashion, her time at Project Runway, and what’s driving her as a designer today. We talk more about how she brings upcycling, zero waste and made-to-order approaches into her design process. Also, Nathalia shares her thoughts on whether today’s shopper is gaining more patience to be able to “wait” and “appreciate” made to order garments. When it comes to what’s currently holding the sustainable fashion industry back, Nathalia says it’s inclusivity. “It’s not sustainable if it’s not inclusive. And how are we going to get more people interested in what we’re talking about if they don’t see themselves represented?” The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: RISD’s Nature–Culture–Sustainability Studies MA program: the program Nathalia is finishing this year “When you’re designing and zero waste garment, you don’t start with a sketch like you usually do. You kind of just let the fabric do its thing and you figure out what you can do with the fabric, which it’s a different creative process.” “I was actually really upset because I finally found the industry I want to be in, but then it turns out it kind of goes against all of my values and morals.” “It’s not sustainable if it’s not inclusive. And how are we going to get more people interested in what we’re talking about if they don’t see themselves represented?”
