Today we’re joined by Ashley Nell Tipton, the Season 14 winner of Project Runway!   Born and raised in San Diego, CA, Ashley has always had a passion for fashion, design, and the plus-sized community. She started her business out of her parent’s garage and slowly but surely transitioned into trying out for Project Runway where she not only dominated the entire season but also became the first plus-size designer and model to win! Since then, she has gone on to be the face of JCPenney’s plus-size clothing line and is continuing to be an advocate for the plus-size community through spreading self-love and self-care.   We had such an amazing conversation with Ashley today. Tears were even shed later on! She was incredibly vulnerable in opening up to us and sharing her story and we are so, so grateful for that — and we know you will be too, once you tune in to hear!   She shares lessons in self-work, self-care and healing, self-discovery, and how she’s learned to march to the beat of her own drum and become the best version of herself. We also talk self-love and mental health, redefining beauty standards, moving away from judgment and towards acceptance of ourselves and others, how we can begin to take back our power, breaking through barriers, knowing when to let go of things that are no longer serving you, sex as a form of self-care, and the importance of choosing yourself first. This is a jam-packed, insightful episode and we can’t wait for you to hear everything that Ashley has to share.   IGNTD Specials: IGNTD Live Online Groups (Free for 14 Days) IGNTD Subscription ($43 per month & 30 days of Live Groups included) IGNTD “Once an Addict” Campaign   Topics Discussed: [:35] Why Sophie started Philosophie Superfoods. Ashley has always loved fashion since she was a little girl, learning how to sew from her grandma who is one of her biggest inspirations. Growing up plus size, Ashley often felt very frustrated that there were no clothes out there to reflect her self expression of how she felt on the inside... she longed for clothes to wear that were fun, in fashion, and told the story she wanted to tell about her personality. So since they didn’t exist, she started making her own. That journey led her to Project Runway where she became the first person to win for designing plus size. After winning, she got her own line at JCPenny and was flooded with opportunities... at the same time she decided she wanted to get weight loss surgery to feel better and healthier. She said it was very difficult being criticized for this decision and losing deals on top of it bc people thought she was “selling out.” This led Ashley to a period of feeling lost and having to reevaluate. We talk about why she started teaching “self love” courses and how she has found her way in fashion making custom masks and offering sewing classes and flower crown courses to teach others how to design and create. Ashley’s story is one of determination, strength, beauty, inclusivity, creativity and paving her own way. Julia Rose Miller is a phenomenal budding talent that shows no signs of slowing down. This 20 year old from Texas had no idea things would change so drastically after winning the title of 2018 Face of Torrid. It is a huge responsibility that she is taking very serious. Her face will be in media worldwide. She has been a long time fan of Torrid so this match was absolutely made in heaven! Find out about this captivating beauty and how she plans on changing the industry with positive vibrations. Website: www.torrid.com Follow: @torridfashion About: Torrid, the hottest fashion brand for sizes 10 to 30, announced today that 20-year-old Julia Rose Miller is the winner of their 3rd Annual Torrid Model Search. A student hailing from Round Rock, Texas, Julia Rose was selected from a diverse pool of over 15,000 women from across the U.S. and Canada, and will serve as a Torrid brand ambassador for the coming year. As part of her new role as the 2018 Face of Torrid, Julia Rose receives a Torrid modeling contract and wardrobe. She will host Torrid store openings and events, star in seasonal fashion campaigns and appear on the brand's social media channels throughout the year. Julia Rose will also work with the brand on establishing an anti-bullying platform for the Torrid Foundation, which was established in 2017 to raise funds in support of non-profit organizations dedicated to helping women. A brand loyalist since the eighth grade, Julia Rose describes her first visit to a Torrid store as feeling like a dream. “To see women who looked like me on the walls and in the windows shocked me,” she says. “I was bullied a lot for my appearance, which made me feel powerless, but seeing how Torrid portrayed women of all sizes gave me confidence. I hope to use this opportunity, with the help of Torrid Foundation, as a platform to inspire other women who went through the same thing as me, to show them that being a size-14 girl is okay — matter of fact, it's beautiful.” The search for the 2018 Face of Torrid began last May with an online casting, followed by live casting events in four major U.S. markets – Los Angeles, Seattle, Houston and Atlanta – as well as the search's first foray into the Canadian market with a casting in Toronto. A panel of celebrity judges, including Project Runway winner Ashley Nell Tipton, celebrity make-up artist Priscilla Ono and supermodel Candice Huffine helped select the top ten finalists who would move on to the next big event: walking in Torrid's first-ever runway show at New York Fashion Week, which was heralded as a bold new move towards increased diversity and inclusiveness in the fashion industry. Following the show, Torrid narrowed the group down to the final four, and then let America vote for the next Face of Torrid. “From thousands of applicants, America chose Julia Rose and we couldn't be happier. She embodies everything about Torrid,” said Liz Muñoz, Torrid President. “She's fearlessly confident, loves fashion and, of course, she's drop-dead gorgeous. Julia Rose is exactly the kind of woman we celebrate every day at Torrid with fabulous-fitting fashion that makes her look and feel amazing. We're thrilled to have her represent our brand as the 2018 Face of Torrid.” Julia Rose joins the ranks of past Torrid Model Search winners, Lyanna Lynette and Maria Gimena, whose careers were jumpstarted after receiving the honor. Her debut campaign for Torrid will be the Spring II Collection, featuring looks straight from the brand's New York Fashion Week runway show. These styles represent key trends for the upcoming season, including bold florals and romantic silhouettes, with elevated details like hand embroidery and beaded elements. Hello listeners, we are back another week and this time we had a conversation with Ashley Nell Tipton. You may have heard of Ashley when she made history after becoming the first designer to win Project Runway with a final collection designed for plus-size women. Ashley was born and raised in San Diego, California. The youngest of four children she had an early passion for fashion. Ashley learned to sew on her grandmother’s sewing machine when she was just seven years old. One of her goals is to help full figured women feel good in what they wear and she hopes to be “THE” Full Fashion Designer. She understands what plus women want and would like to give curvy girls a chance to show their style with chic edginess. Ashley says: “I pictured my muse roaming the streets of Paris unabashed and feeling confident in their stride while wearing designs that are not seen in full figure fashions today. The finished line is filled with bold colors and finesse… just like me!” This one is a lengthy one, Ashley truly dives deep into her story and shares the criticism she's had to face from her family to people in social media, while creating her brand and also having so many women look up to her for being the first contestant to ever create a plus size women collection in Project Runway. Find Ashley on all things social: @ashleynelltipton Stay shining!
