Today With Julie Murphy: Welcome to this episode of "Window Treatments for Profit"! Today, I'm thrilled to have Julie Murphy with me. We dive into her journey from running a one-person workroom to purchasing a larger business—Designer Draperies of Boston. Julie shares her insights on navigating the complexities of buying a business, the importance of client relationships, and the lessons learned along the way. Whether you're considering expanding your own business or just curious about the behind-the-scenes of our industry, this conversation is packed with valuable takeaways. Let's get started! More About Julie Murphy I began my foray into the art of window treatment fabrication as the sole proprietor of a home-based business. It was only natural that my passion fed a desire to expand capacity to meet the needs of my growing clientele. With the merger of two successful businesses and the right team of skilled and experienced professionals, I could offer more interior designers a longer list of custom made fabrication products and services without cutting out what I value the most: Quality, Collaboration, and Exemplary Customer Service. Mary Phillips is the owner of Phillips Window Workroom, a custom drapery and soft home furnishings workroom in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Mary has been in the industry for over 40 years, first starting with upholstery with her Sister-In-Law, creating relationships with clients and vendors and then going off on her own out of the house. In 2003, Mary found a location in Chadds Ford and moved out of the house and the rest has been history! Mary has three children with her husband, Mike, a sweet dog Ruby and a huge loving family that loves spending time together and going on vacations to the beach or hanging by the pool. Callye is 26 years old and is Mary's daughter. She grew up in and out of the workroom. When Callye was 6, Mary moved out of the house. Through the years, Callye always appreciated that her Mom was able to come to all her sporting events, and could be there when she needed her since her Mom was her own boss. After going to West Chester University, and finishing right in the pandemic in May 2020, Callye didn't quite have a game plan. She spent a year and a half nannying before deciding to join the PWW team, and just celebrated three years with them. Callye enjoys the creative process, working with customers and designers and seeing their beautiful custom work come to life. Outside of the workroom, Callye coaches volleyball and still plays, (has a boyfriend), and loves spending time with family & friends and her three beautiful nephews! (Soon to be 4). Jeff Whiting is an award-winning director and choreographer, acclaimed as a 'director with a joyous touch' by the New York Times, Jeff Whiting specializes in work for theater, television, special events and concerts around the world, including James Taylor, Bette Midler, Steve Martin, Tony Bennett, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Sting. On Broadway, Jeff was the Associate/Resident Director for the Broadway productions of Bullets Over Broadway (6 Tony Nominations - Susan Stroman), Big Fish (Norbert Leo Butz), The Scottsboro Boys (12 Tony nominations), Hair (Tony-winner of Best Revival), Young Frankenstein (Sutton Foster, Megan Mullally), and Wicked's 5th Anniversary (Stephanie J. The Broadway Workroom is designed to showcase emerging artists' work by providing rehearsal and presentation space, including technical support, at no cost to the production in order to help the team further their creative goals along the developmental journey. At the end of each week, the public is invited, at no cost, to experience these dynamic new musicals in concert at Open Jar Studios (1601 Broadway). Tickets for each concert are free, and attendees are encouraged to make a donation to The Stage Door Foundation to help fund their programs. The Broadway Workroom Series provides a rare opportunity for Broadway enthusiasts to witness the evolution of new musicals, a process typically reserved for industry insiders during private "workshops" or "readings. The series' vibe is to present glimpses of shows in their development phases, with focus on the writing and performances and less attention to production value.

Today With Vita Vygovska: Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit! In this episode I'm joined by my good friend, Vita Vygovska, to discuss the differences between a full-service concierge workroom and a production workroom. We also talk about how full-service workrooms can respond when asked why they charge more than production workrooms. Either way, if you are a window treatment professional, you will learn all of the differences between the two types of showrooms. If you own a showroom, then you will learn how to answer that dreaded question. Pick It Apart [5:24] Vita explains the differences between a full-service concierge workroom compared to a production/track workroom. [9:31] The core skills a production workroom has compared to the concierge. [14:03] What a full-service workroom does during the estimate stage. [17:41] The process of the expediting stage for a full-service workroom. [24:58} You are at will to explain to a client why you charge more as a full-service workroom. LuAnn and Vita Vygovska's Ah-Ha Moments “A Full-service concierge workroom does everything a production workroom does, except their services extend through the last step of the window treatment.” - Vita Vygovska “I can say with high confidence that when you work with a full-service workroom, the amount of care, attention, and vested interest in the relationship is a lot higher.” - Vita Vygovska More About Vita Vygovska Vitalia (Vita for short) Vygovska is an award-winning author, speaker, business coach, and window treatment specialist. Her company, Vitalia Inc Window Treatments, is a comprehensive fabrication, measurement, installation, and project management service. Today, providing concierge-level, white-glove service exclusively to interior designers who are ready to fly first-class in the world of window treatments is what Vitalia Inc is renowned for. Interior Designers love working with Vitalia Inc because of the superb communication, tech-driven and meticulously detailed processes, and high-quality product. Deborah Cronin is the owner of Leatherwood Design Co is a custom window treatment fabrication studio, located in Ossining, New York, in the breathtaking Hudson River Valley. Deb and her team work to the trade and delight in fine fabrics and workmanship. It's an understatement to say they love what they do! Fabric and sewing has been Deb's life-long obsession and she considers it a privilege to be able to make a living doing what she loves. Deb has a blog that is dedicated to documenting what they do every day: they enjoy showing off the gorgeous fabrics they work with, and the window treatments they make from them; discuss the design and fabrication process; and share information about some of their resources, colleagues, and inspiration. Today Deb is sharing her journey to overcome pain in her body and to make it last longer so that she can continue to do what she loves! Summary In this episode, the hosts discuss the lip sync battle, Maya's confidence, post-elimination reactions, workroom dynamics, role assignments, the rusical challenge, and the strategy behind choosing roles. This episode of RuPaul's Drag Race Recap featured discussions about Miss America, the choreography segment, elimination day, the rusical segment, runway looks, the lip sync battle, and overall thoughts on the episode. Takeaways The lip sync battle between Maya and Megami was underwhelming, with both queens failing to fully capture the essence of the song. Maya's self-proclaimed title of 'lip sync assassin' may be premature, as her performance in this episode was not as strong as she believes. Plasma's behavior and attitude continue to rub the hosts the wrong way, with her lack of struggle and self-assuredness making her unlikable. The role assignments for the rusicla challenge were not evenly distributed, leading to some queens feeling overshadowed and others feeling overlooked. The hosts question the classification of the rusical as a true musical, as it lacks live singing and relies heavily on lip syncing and dancing. The contestants showcased their talent and delivered strong performances in the rusical segment. The runway looks were exceptional, with the queens stepping up their game. The choreography segment with Adam Shankman was well-received, and Melissa McCarthy's appearance provided a nice touch. The episode highlighted the importance of being true to oneself and standing up for what one wants, as demonstrated by the contestants' actions. Sue Parten opened her workroom in 1985. She found that To-the-Trade was the best fit for her so she could be home with her kids, and she didn't have to continuously find new clients. Sue hired a business coach in 2009 when the economy crashed. She was working a 2 nd job to make ends meet and knew she needed to change things up. Her coach helped her look at her workroom as a business instead of a paycheck. Together they built systems and set goals so that someday, Sue could hand someone else the keys to the kingdom and ride off into the sunset!
