Why Will People Hunger for the Word of God? Today's first reading is from the Prophet Amos. Israel, during Amos' time, is a land of wealth. It arrives at this wealth, in part, by demanding from the poor. Amos comes and issues a warning. He says, you need to administer justice. If you are not just, you will be punished. Amos says people are hungry for food, but the leaders are feasting. If this is not corrected, you will be poor and hungry. Stop oppressing the poor! The prophet goes on and says these leaders will not hunger for food. They will hunger for the Word of God! Why would they hunger for the Word of God? Because of some people's ways, God was silent. Have you ever talked to someone who doubted the existence of God? Someone who says God couldn't have created everything in our world?    Watch that same someone stare in wonder at a mountain range like the Rockies, the delicate bloom of a flower, or a sunset on a beach in Greece. It's pretty hard to deny God in such a moment.    In fact, all throughout scripture, we're told that God's majesty is seen in our natural surroundings. He made everything. Literally—all matter. He created the conditions for a waterfall, the light of the moon and the stars, and the horses that gallop across a prairie.    There's infinite beauty in our world, and He made it.   Amos 4:13 says, “He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and who reveals his thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn to darkness and treads on the heights of the earth, the Lord God Almighty is his name.”   The Prophet Amos had seen the beauty of the land, from golden deserts to lush pastures. He'd also seen the power of God even in earthquakes and storms. He knew it was possible to worship God without limitations, and the splendor of nature He'd created.    We have the same opportunity. Just stand in a favorite spot and meditate on the power and majesty of the living God. Take a walk in the fresh air to revive your spirit. There's something healing about connecting with your Creator in a spot that highlights just how much beauty is in our world.   The next time you hear someone question the existence of God, or if you encounter someone who's feeling a bit down, get them out in nature. Take time to soak it all in. Reflect on His wondrous works. It'll have a positive effect.   Let's pray.    Father, thank you so much for creating a world that we can enjoy. We're aware of you and know you made the lakes, and the valleys, and the mountains—all of it. You filled it with amazing animals and fresh air. We praise your name for all of this, Father. The Prophet Amos once asked the question, “Can two walk together unless they are agreed?” That is the same concept Paul has in mind here. We must stand firm in our agreement with the essential elements of the content of our faith. Without this basic agreement, we cannot move forward together to contend for the faith.

The Prophet Amos wrote, “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD” (Amos 8:11). Brother Sam sees these words indeed can apply to our nation in 2023. Preaching abounds—but the anointed word of God is a scarcity.   Yet we are without excuse in Gospel Assembly (GTA). Brother Singh is that faithful and wise servant our Lord has put in charge of this household {our assembly} to give us meat in due season! We are fed the messages necessary to save us from these evil days. The question is, “Do we digest our food, or leave it untouched on the plate?

Whether it is multi-million-dollar settlements where companies do not have to admit guilt, ministries hiding sexual abuse or covering up theft, or platforming the narcissistic pastor so that they can save face. We have witnessed the fallout from wrongdoing, both on a personal and national level. This is just how the world works, right? The Prophet Amos challenges this status quo and reminds the people of God that we have a role to play in bringing about justice.Now Dylan has a song called “God On Our Side” where he traces some of the moments from America's history and speaks about how he was taught that we won wars and had a right to manifest our destiny because God Was On Our Side. And one of the verses goes like this: Through many a dark hour I've been thinkin' about this That Jesus Christ was Betrayed by a kiss But I can't think for you You'll have to decide Whether Judas Iscariot Had God on his side. Am I a part of the problem? Am I contributing to ecological disasters? Am I caught up in the extreme consumerist attitude of the culture? Am I doing anything to help my city and my neighbors suffering from injustice? Do I have implicit or explicit prejudice? Does the change I want to see in the world need to start with me? Amos, like all prophets, is a messenger sent by God to call the people of God back to covenantal or relational faithfulness. Amos is advocating on behalf of the covenant God established with the Israelite people. Which is consistently broken by their sin, rebellion, and unjust treatment of one another resulting in a broken relationship between the people and God..." “Why do you see the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye' while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye,” (Matthew 7:3-5). Justice and Righteousness is THE key theme for the book of Amos. God has called us to change our hearts, not just our clothes. To be people who go through both outward AND inward change. Israel, however, thought changing their clothes was enough. Amos 5:21-24, I hate, I despise your feasts! I can't stand the stench of your solemn assemblies. Even if you offer Me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; I will have no regard for your fellowship offerings of fattened cattle. Take away from Me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice flow like water, and righteousness, like an unfailing stream. “What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? Absolutely not!” Romans 6:1 The prophets never separated themselves from the people of Israel. They led through their EMBODIMENT, not through political or social power. “Forgive US our debts,” Matthew 6:12 “Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew 5:44 “Seek God and live.” Amos 5:4 Spiritual Practice:Grieve/Lament Personal inventory Energization/Hope Luke 19:41-44, “41 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! Martin Luther King used it in his I Have a Dream speech where he quoted the verse “Let justice roll down…” from Amos 5:24. And in June 2023 Pope Francis chose “Let justice and peace flow” (citing the book of Amos) as the theme for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, which will be on Sept. 1. In this lesson we'll first look at the meaning of the word justice in the Old Testament and how it is far more than a legal term but about “giving people what they are due, whether punishment or protection or care.” We will confirm Amos as a historical figure through what archeology tells us and then look at his challenges to the people of his time and how they apply to us as followers of God today. In his time sadly there was a “famine for the Words of the Lord,” in both the land and in their religious observances. There was much religious observance and little true obedience to God—similarities we find in our world. Amos tells us how to live in the midst of these challenges. He was born of a virgin, so we are told.  The angel of the Lord visited Mary and divine conception occurred, so we are told.  The virgin birth is difficult for many to believe.It defies nature, biology.  It is simply not the way things happen.Conception and birth are as a result of the very best of female and male.  So, you either believe in the virgin birth or you don't.  Christians, real Christians do.  And so do I and I hope you. Bethlehem, where once HE was born was then Bethlehem of Judea.  It is now Bethlehem as part of Palestine.  It is so very different even though the place where he was born continues to be celebrated by the Church of the Nativity.  Jesus was Jew, fully Jewish and Bethlehem no longer reflects that.  That is most unfortunate and sad to see.  We are told that Jesus as child, teenager and young adult lived a sinless, blameless life.This God-man was able to do that even though so many find that hard to believe.  But Christians do believe that, real Christians do, and I hope you do.We know little of his early years.  The son of a carpenter, the Lord of Glory was a carpenter by trade.  Nazareth where he lived and built has like Bethlehem radically changed.  It is Arab and Islam influenced and in many ways dominated and so much that was Jewish of old is long gone.  It is difficult as the old hymn states to WALK WHERE JESUS WALKED.  Those little lanes have in fact changed and really not for the better. Perhaps the sweet peace that once filled the air was real then, but there is anything but peace as the century's old hatred between Arab and Jew festers and so often boils over.  Perhaps it is only this carpenter from Nazareth who built so many things could rebuild, restore and reborn peace, real peace between Arab and Jew through his love.  Nazareth, Bethlehem and the world sorely need just that.  The Galilee where Jesus of Nazareth conducted so much of his ministry and performed his memorable miracles has also radically changed.  It is modernized in so many ways.  The City of Tiberias which surrounds the Sea of Galilee is modern on the one hand, wealthy and thriving in part but on the other broken, poverty ridden and anxious.  The city seems very much in need of the carpenter from Nazareth who walked on the Sea of Galilee.  How wonderful it would be if those marvelous miracles of old could once again transform, born again the place where he lived and the people that he loved.So often, the carpenter from Nazareth and the CHRIST OF CHRISTMAS went up from to Jerusalem to fellowship and worship at the temple.  Much of the Jerusalem HE knew has changed.  Much is modern, commercial and much is not Jewish as he was.  There is significant Arab and Muslim influence.The Temple Mount where the temple of the great G-d Jehovah once stood is now controlled by Arabs and Muslims.  On that once holy Jewish site stand the mosques Al-Aqsa and the Dome of the Rock.  To visit the Temple Mount as I recently did is to feel the tension between Muslim and Jew, and in fact Muslim and all others.  The peace which passes all understanding which HE brought is nowhere to be found.  The love of the BABE OF BETHLEHEM has been replaced by war, hatred and vengeance, so much vengeance.  There is, as HE asked, no love for an enemy or even peace.  There is only détente, reluctant acceptance of a temporary truce enforced with tension and military presence.  The joy the three wise men felt as they gave gifts to him in Bethlehem is long gone. Watchmen on the walls watch not for HIM but for the coming of the enemy.  Gold, frankincense and myrrh have been replaced by uranium, chemical warfare and poisonous gas.  Love offerings have been replaced by suicide bombings.  The good tidings of great joy which once emanated from Bethlehem have been replaced by the sirens which trumpet more war at work.Jerusalem, like all of Israel has changed.  Yet Jews and Christians everywhere pray for the: PEACE OF JERUSALEM And Israel, and the world.  But THE PRINCE OF PEACE is nowhere to be found in the land or in their hearts.There can be no peace, sayeth the Scriptures, old and new without the Messiah.  Christians believe that Messiah has come, born in Bethlehem in Judea and faithful Jews wait for HIM to come for the first time.  What a different world it would be, and what a different Jerusalem it would be if mankind allowed the Prince of Peace to gather all under His wings, as he prayed and heal the world (Jews call it Tikkun Olam) as only HE can.  Christians, real Christians believe the Messiah has come and will come again.The Babe of Bethlehem, the Christ of Christmas is in fact that Messiah, so Christians believe. Anti-Semitism, as hateful as anything on this earth, is once again on the rise.  It is everywhere, even in our very own open-minded country.  Europe is awash in Anti-Jewish hatred and action.  Jihadist Islam is on the march, to exterminate the Jews once and for all, to finish as one a valid jihadist said the work that Hitler never completed.And of course, with the extermination of the Jews, so would jihadists exterminate Christians and all other religionists who would not convert to Islam and exchange the G-d Jehovah for that of Allah.  And of course, the exchange the Christ of Christmas for the Prophet Mohammad.  For, to exterminate the Jews is to eradicate Jesus of Nazareth, Himself a Jew.  Perhaps because Jesus was in fact Jewish there is now even more hatred and Anti-Christian sentiment the world over.  It is indeed a time for realignment, for standing together, especially for all things Judeo-Christian, so severely attacked and protect and defend the faith.In so much of the world, freedom of religion requires the protection of the military, as in Bethlehem of Judea.The Church of the Nativity and its environs are protected by Bethlehem police, Palestinian soldiers and even the Israeli Defense Force.  Guns protect and allow the giving of alms.  How ironic but a way of life in this day and age, in this Anti-Semitic day and age.  The love and the peace which emanated from Bethlehem 2,000 years ago seems long gone.But it is still there.  It can live among mankind or in their hearts.The power of the peace of the Babe of Bethlehem is still available and can change lives and even whole nations.If only, as little children, we could open our hearts to love and peace and to HIM, the world could in fact be changed.  That is the promise of His birth in Bethlehem. And so we watched the return of the Jews to Israel, so many of them, the great Aliyah.  There is the fulfillment of the words of the Prophet Amos who said: “I WILL BRING MY PEOPLE ISRAEL BACK FROM EXILE.THEY WILL REBUILD THE RUINED CITIES AND LIVE IN THEM.  THEY WILL PLANT VINEYARDS AND DRINK THEIR WINE.  THEY WILL MAKE GARDENS AND EAT THEIR FRUIT.  I WILL PLANT ISRAEL IN THEIR OWN LAND, NEVER AGAIN TO BE UPROOTED FROM THE LAND I HAVE GIVEN THEM, SAYS YAHWEH YOUR GOD.” That is now happening.  We should rejoice as the Scriptures are fulfilled, especially we who are Gentile.In fact, we should be reminded that God intends to use Gentiles to help fulfill that promise and we are reminded of the words of Isaiah who said: “SEE, I WILL BECKON TO THE GENTILES.  I WILL LIFT UP MY BANNER TO THE PEOPLES.  THEY WILL BRING YOUR SONS IN THEIR ARMS AND CARRY YOUR DAUGHTERS ON THEIR SHOULDERS.” What a privilege is ours as Christians and Gentiles to help return the Chosen People to the Promised Land.  The motivating force for the reuniting, the bonding and standing together of Christian and Jew is the love of the Babe of Bethlehem.  It is that love which started in a manger centuries ago which alone can unite and put an end once and for all to Anti-Semitism and in fact all evil and hatred.  So, it is the peace of God which passes all understanding and we should never forget the words from the Torah, the Book of Numbers which reminds us that only: YAHWEH Can bless you and keep you.  Only Yahweh can make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you.  Only Yahweh can turn his face toward you and give you peace. Only HE can. Love indeed came down at Christmas, love so divine.  Those who believe shout hallelujah, the Lord is come.  Let our hearts be filled with joy and praise at this wonderful season.  No matter the wars and rumors of wars, let us luxuriate in His peace, and His Love and like little children as He once was, open our hearts to that love divine so that we can in fact say with the angels of old: GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST AND ON EARTH PEACE, GOODWILL TOWARD ALL MANKIND Perhaps none on this earth want peace more than Israelis.  They live with the motto NEVER AGAIN.  They will protect and defend against any enemy.  They will never forget, never ever.  But they, like all mankind, should never forget what happened in Bethlehem, 2,000 years ago.  There was a man, a Jew who changed the world then and can do it now.  And that man was and is: THE BABE OF BETHLEHEM Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward all mankind at Christmastime and: ALWAYS

The Prophet Amos in Israel

God's people have a huge blessing AND a huge responsibility to the world. As we dive off into the Book of Amos, this prophet to the Northern Kingdom reflects back on God's call upon Israel to be a light to the Gentiles. Unfortunately, Israel conformed to the lifestyle and worldview of the world around them. Today, the church is guilty of the very same thing! Amos addresses the relationship between God's justice and mercy. He highlights the necessity of truth and obedience as well as the emphasized attribute of God's OMNISCIENCE. God sees and knows all things! Our sin cannot be hidden. Our sin will find us out! God is holy and he must be worshipped in holiness! Judgment is God's response, based on His LOVE and JUSTICE! The Prophet Amos Tells Us: Stop Listening to Lesser Voices! The Prophet Amos Tells Us: . . . In the first reading, the prophet Amos talks to those that oppose Israel, the enemy of Israel. Amos lived around 760 BC. He tells us about what will happen to the enemies . . . the consequences of what has been done wrong. Amos, after telling all what will happen, turns to those who are in the great Temple. Those that have come to pray. He addresses the king and to all of the people who have listen to what Amos said to the enemies of Israel. Amos turns to the people of Israel and proclaims the word of God. The people wanted wickedness against their enemies. Now they hear what else Amos has to say. The Lord sees the wickedness also in the hearts of the people of Israel. The reading we have today is directed against Israel itself. There is a note the Lord has reach the limits of His patience. The Lord has issued warnings previously that have provoked an empty response. The statements we now hear are remarkable. The Lord says it does not manner how often you come to the Temple. It doesn't manner how often you offer sacrifices. It doesn't manner that you make a show of observing the Feast Days . . . if you are going to leave all of that empty. . . . Stop Listening to Lesser Voices! In today's world, we experience the same thing. A person does what he wills during the week and pats himself on the back because he goes to Church on Sunday! If all of these things do not penetrate your heart, then praying or Mass attendance has very little value. Hear more in the Homily. Why is Amos telling his message to the people of Israel?
