King Herod's life teaches us how the denial of God has so many destructive consequences. Despite his power and authority, he succumbed to moral compromise, driven a desire to please others, resulting in the cruel beheading of John the Baptist. Rejecting God not only distorts our understanding of right and wrong but often leads to a life marked by irrational decisions and a disconnection from truth. Turning away from our Creator leads to chaos and emptiness. Turning to Christ brings abundant life and joy.

As humans in a fallen world, we desire to be autonomous. We want to be a law onto ourselves. This, of course, is a distortion of the authority that God granted to Adam and Eve in Eden. We must be mindful of our desire to rule over a kingdom we have no authority to rule.

Though American's think freedom, joy, and life are found in being the rebel, Numbers 16 shows the tragedy and destruction that comes from rejecting God's authorities. Pastor Mollenkopf opens this sobering reality in God's word.

In exploring the distinct characteristics of God, theologians often define “grace” as receiving what one doesn't deserve, and “mercy” as not receiving what one does deserve. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar remind listeners that every breath is an unearned mercy, reinforcing the concept that grace is not guaranteed.
