Formed in 1981 and hailing from Downey, California (the birthplace of the mighty Hetfield), thrash masters DARK ANGEL unleashed a darker, faster, more aggressive sounding brand of thrash, with a sound initially reminiscent of the death metal aesthetic present in Slayer's early work and later evolving into a more progressive, technical thrash sound resembling the latter part of Death's catalog.    Prepare to learn more about “the outer balloon knot” (‘the yurt' as it ‘twere)” and remember that when it comes to old school thrash, those guys “got a LOT to say” and a very short time in which to say it. Enjoy a spirited debate regarding cover songs relative to the originals that was 100% “from the heart”, learn more about the benefits of “The Express Package”, and don't forget to “microwave your melons” after you JOIN US as we learn more about the technical thrash genius of “The L.A. SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE, the 2nd beautifully bizarre edition of “the Sunday funny papers of metal”, brought to you by El Sobrante, California's genius weirdo trio, PRIMUS, is the gold standard of the eccentric sound of “boxless” progressive, funk metal overtones filtered through a heroic dose of psychedelic infused absurdity and combined with an ample sized bowl of surreal silliness.   With drum beats that are right, smack dab ”in the pocket”, bass lines that defy the laws of music and reality, orchestrated, atonal, guitar noise that's always a tad off, and lyrics covering a vast array of peculiar and unusual topics, ranging from promiscuous cats to reckless race car drivers to weird time signatures to sheer luck, SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE is one of those recordings that every metal head with a well-defined sillier side (and a “sophisticated palette”) must possess.     Grab a handful of relaxation and enjoy “a positive Applebee's experience” while also noting that this is our 2nd PRIMUS episode featuring a story about Applebee's (seriously, what are the odds of that happening almost 3 years later!?). Discover the reason McDonald's is diabolical and why it's exactly like something else that's “not even the same ballpark”, understand that it's perfectly okay to have “different tastes” with regard to entertainment shown “in slow motion”, and brace yourself for a first time Steve Harvey impression that morphed into a Katt Williams impression that was followed by an even better, more impressive Katt Williams impression when you JOIN US as we gear up to go snorkeling through the caverns of queso while SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182   Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts. This week: a sister-cast episode to a series we have called the Inbetweeners where we on the bands straddling the 80s and 90s in rock n' punk n' metal. This is more specific to metal in the 90s after feeling the impact of the overwhelming shifting of sounds during the decade. Metal became a dirty word by the mid-90s as grunge and alternative took over the rock world, but a new movement in the metal genre blended all of these influences with the heavy. Thus, we give you - 90s Alternative Metal! What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover mostly bands that have been forgotten including some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the heavy metal 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and metal bands that began during this time put it all in an industrial-strength metal blender. Hope ya dig! Songs this week include:Quicksand – “Thorn In My Side” from Manic Compression (1995)Fragile Porcelain Mice – “Brown Nickel” from Frostbiddin (1996)Therapy? – “Nasuea” from Nurse (1992)Corrosion Of Conformity – “Clean My Wounds” from Deliverance (1994)Prong – “Unconditional” from Prove You Wrong (1991)Fight – “I Am Alive” from A Small Deadly Space (1995)Life Of Agony – “This Time” from River Runs Red (1993)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Let's rewind to 1988. Metal underwent a massive transformation, with flashy glam metal and its catchy hooks coexisting alongside darker, more intense sounds on MTV's Headbangers Ball. Enter Glenn Danzig, fresh from his work with Misfits and Samhain, who was about to turn the metal world on its head with his new project. This shift was catalyzed by the involvement of legendary producer Rick Rubin, who signed Danzig to his label, Def American Recordings. Rubin, known for his work with diverse acts from Slayer to the Beastie Boys, recognized the unique potential in Danzig's vision. Released in 1988, Danzig's self-titled album brought a brooding, blues-infused metal sound unlike anything else. Recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York City, the album blended raw power and dark, occult themes, setting a new standard for the genre.

While we acknowledge “we can't judge entire albums” by just a sample of songs from each one, there's no denying the consistent sonic salvation found throughout the entire METAL CHURCH discography.   Find out which riff may have influenced the mighty Slayer and discover the reason why turning on the blacklights in the Bunkerpoon bears a striking resemblance to a planetarium. “Sure, God's all-powerful, but does he have lips? Whoa…” It was the early 90's, and the landscape of metal was undergoing a transformation. Hair metal was effectively dead and gone, the popularity of thrash was rapidly approaching its zenith, and ALICE IN CHAINS were well on their way to becoming one of the most recognized bands in the world, thanks (in no small part) to their slot supporting The Clash of the Titans Tour, opening for 75% (or ¾ if you prefer fractions) of The Big Four as perhaps the most obscure, unknown, and “out of place” band on a bill packed with the biggest names in thrash.   While ALICE IN CHAINS brought their own unique brand of metal to a brand-new (and oftentimes “highly resistant”) audience as the “odd ducks” relative to their legendary thrash counterparts, AIC's “baptism by fire” granted them the opportunity to prove their mettle while winning over new legions of metal fans and helping pave the way for the next evolutionary wave of metal which would soon be rising to prominence.   Get ready to learn the answer to “Where?” and prepare to get “sucked in” as we unveil the actual reason why glam bands wore make-up and remember why “It's gotta be clean and it's gotta be huge” if you “won't be taking baths this year” whenever you JOIN US for some “third eye gravy” as we go INSIDE THE METAL of a band sharing more in common with Slayer than you'd think and journey to the rainy, perpetually moist, Pacific Northwest (where one might “hunt for some Squatch”) with Seattle's native sons, ALICE IN CHAINS.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast

If you're an American gen-xer or millennial, there's a better-than-decent chance you were heavily influenced by MTV growing up. Launched in the early '80s, culturally crescendoing in the '90s, and still highly-relevant into the 2000s, MTV's brand of so-called 'music television' helped define a succession of generations' musical tastes, fashion, and the wider spectrum of entertainment full-stop. Today's episode of KnockBack is dedicated to MTV through the eyes of two people born in 1973 and 1984, both loyal viewers of the network not unlike millions upon millions of their respective contemporaries. There were the music videos, yes. And they were glorious. But there's so much more to delve into, too: Programming (120 Minutes, Headbangers Ball, TRL), spin-offs (VH1, MTV2), the rise of reality television as we know it (The Real World, Road Rules), and on and on and on. We definitely wanted our MTV. Did you? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Is there a more polorizing band in metal right now than Motley Crue. The band that gave us "Public Enemy One" has become Public Enemy Number One. Theres allegation of lipsynching, fake playing. Mick Mars is out of the band. Theres law suits and a lot of smack talking. On this episode of the Cathouse Hollywood Podcast. Former Headbangers Ball host and Cathouse owner reveals some old stories from Motley Crues past. One event that led to the end of a friendship between Riki and Nikki. This is not the typical Cathouse Hollywood podcast. Riki is a little more opinionated  and I'm sure there will be some backlash. If Motley Crue is damaged can they be repaired?
