Christianity and Secularism in America, with Jonathan Rauch

”I grew up thinking that Christianity was basically cruel and hypocritical.” “The core teachings of Jesus align very well with the core teachings of James Madison.” “That's why we need Christianity. It's not because we don't have reason to fear. It's because we do.” —Jonathan Rauch, from the episode We're at a crossroads, where Christianity and secularism in America are both operating at cross-purposes, and both need a critical reassessment of their role in democratic public life. In his new book, Jonathan Rauch “reckons candidly with both the shortcomings of secularism and the corrosion of Christianity.” He “addresses secular Americans who think Christianity can be abandoned, and Christian Americans who blame secular culture for their grievances.” Jonathan Rauch is senior fellow in the Governance Studies program at the Brookings Institution. He is the author of several books, including The Constitution of Knowledge: A Defense of Truth and his latest book (under discussion in this episode),  Cross Purposes: Christianity's Broken Bargain with Democracy. Follow him on X @jon_rauch. He is also a celebrated essayist, a contributing writer for The Atlantic, and a recipient of the 2005 National Magazine Award, the magazine industry's equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. In this episode Mark Labberton and Jonathan Rauch discuss: Republican virtue What Jesus and James Madison have in common The political idolatry of secularism The differences between the thin church, sharp church, and thick church The political orientation of the church in exile Tyrannical fear The Morman church's example of civic theology “of patience, negotiation, and mutual accommodation” The promise of power in exchange for loyalty About Jonathan Rauch Jonathan Rauch is senior fellow in the Governance Studies program at the Brookings Institution. He is the author of several books, including The Constitution of Knowledge: A Defense of Truth and his latest book (under discussion in this episode),  Cross Purposes: Christianity's Broken Bargain with Democracy. Follow him on X @jon_rauch. Show Notes Cross Purposes: Christianity's Broken Bargain with Democracy The Constitution of Knowledge: A Defense of Truth Reasonable, civic mindedness “Graciousness toward a faith you don't share.” “Of course I knew I was Jewish. I also knew that the idea of God seemed silly to me. I just never, never could believe it.” The Rev. Dr. Mark McIntosh 2003 Atlantic article: “The dumbest thing I ever wrote” celebrating secularism in America (”Let It Be,” The Atlantic, May 2003) “ It turned out that when Christianity started to fail, people started looking for substitutes, because they were looking for a source of identity and values and transcendent meaning.” Political idolatry of secularism “A major reason the country is becoming ungovernable is because of Christianity's crisis. We can no longer separate the two, and that's why I, a very secular person, am writing a book about Christianity.” “Moving away from the teachings of Jesus…” “The core teachings of Jesus align very well with the core teachings of James Madison.” Mark's description of his father: “ My dad used to save certain neck veins for the discussion of religion because he felt like it was something that should be avoided, at that time, at all costs, particularly its most zealous kind. And his primary critique was that what religious people do is that they take great things and make them small. …   What shocked me when I became a Christian was this discovery that Jesus and my dad had this same theme in common, that Jesus often objected to the small making of various religious authorities of his day.” “God's capacious grace, creativity, purpose, and love” Will the church live in its identity as followers of Jesus? “Christianity is a load-bearing wall in our liberal democracy.” “Republican virtues” (not the party): lawful, truthful, civic education, tolerant, pluralistic Christianity's role in upholding the unprecedented religious freedom “When Christians begin demanding things that are inconsistent with those core values, that makes everything else in the country harder.” “The thin church is a church that blends into the surrounding culture and it becomes diluted.” “The sharp church is …  where the church takes on the political colorations of the surrounding environment, aligns itself with a political party.” Divisive and polarizing “The third is the thick church. And there, the challenge is that you want a church to be counter cultural. You want it to have a strong sense of its own values. Otherwise, it's just not doing the work. So it needs to ask a lot of its followers. It needs to give a lot back in exchange. That's what sociologists mean by, by thick communities and groups. At the same time, it needs to be reasonably well aligned with our constitution and our liberal democratic values.” Church of fear Fear of demographic decline Cultural fear and losing the country to the woke Left Fear of emasculation Plain old political fear: “Our side needs to win.” Fear as a major theme of the Bible Fear of God as “the beginning of wisdom” “A communion of unlike people. … A workshop in which the character of God … is meant to be learned.” Immaturity and lack of wisdom in the church “The chief defense of the faith in the world that Jesus died and rose is that unlike people find communion with one another in a union that only Jesus Christ's death and resurrection could actually accomplish.” “Tyrannical fear”—a drive for dominance “Fear is part of the human condition. Yet what's so countercultural about Christianity, is its teaching that you can't be governed by that fear. You can't let it run your life and go around in a state of panic. And that Jesus Christ himself had lots to be fearful of, as we know from the end that he came to, and yet comported himself in this calm and dignified way, did not let fear triumph over him. That's why we need Christianity. It's not because we don't have reason to fear. It's because we do.” “Fear casts out love.” Trump administration['s] … demonstration of a capacity to have literally no compassion, no empathy.” The paradigm of Exodus versus the paradigm of exile Isaiah 58: “ Now as strangers in a strange land in Babylon, I'm going to ask you: Who are you now? Who do you trust now? Who are you going to put the full weight of your life on now?” “Exilic Church” “ Christianity is not about owning the country or winning in politics.” “It can't be a coincidence that at a moment when (at least) white Protestantism in the United States is obsessed with political influence and has mortgaged itself to the least Christlike figure possibly in American political history (in any case, right up there) that its numbers are shrinking catastrophically.” “The irony of the cross always is this self emptying power.” [Trump] is saying, “I will give you power, and in exchange, you will give me unquestioning loyalty.” Comparing Trump's transaction (at Dordt University in Iowa) “If you vote for me, you will have power” with the temptation of Christ in the desert: “All of this will be yours if you bow down to me.” Transactional relationship with power The Mormon church's “ civic theology … of patience, negotiation, and mutual accommodation” Jesus: “Don't be afraid, imitate Jesus, and forgive each other.” Madisonian liberalism: “Don't panic if you lose an election, protect minorities and the dignity of every individual, and don't seek retribution if you win, share the country.” “When Gandhi was asked what he thought of Western civilization, he said, ‘It would be a good idea.'” Black church and MLK Jr.—”emphasis on Reverend” “You accept the stripes and the crown of thorns. You turn the other cheek.” Profoundly counterintuitive countercultural example Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment magazine and Fuller Seminary.

When I was a teen, I had a paper route delivering the Washington Post. My paper route wasn't near my house so the route distributor, that's the person that delivers the papers to the paperboy, would drive me and my friend Charlie up to our routes. After we were done, he'd come back and pick us up and take us home. But while we were waiting for him to pick us up, we'd read the paper as there was sometimes a paper or two left over. Of course, we always went right to the comics and when the comics were done there was a syndicated column by investigative reporter Jack Anderson. Anderson, a Pulitzer prize winning Morman republican muckraker, was equally hard on the left and the right. After that we'd turn over to the editorial section to decrypt the latest political cartoon from Herblock. Then, we'd seek out the latest Art Buchwald column. Art was kind of the printed version of Jon Stewart. A more political Dave Barry, if you will. Growing up in the DC area would have a profound effect on my worldview and sense of humor.I try not to be political, in a “I'm this party or that party” sense. I try to be apolitical, which is becoming harder and harder as the world changes. I am a proud registered independent waiting for candidates to convince me to vote for them. I try to vote for the person I like who tells me what they are going to do, in real terms, not in vague generalities. I'm much more interested in why I should vote for someone than why I shouldn't vote for the other candidate. That I can decide for myself. I'm Tim Rose and this is the Tim Tunes Podcast. In this episode we'll cover three songs that are arguably political in nature. The first song satirizes the US government's involvement in South America in the 70s, the next song is my reaction to our post 9/11 invasion of Iraq, and the last song laments our loss of liberty because of these events. So, get comfy as we delve into the world of politics.Support the showPlease consider making a one time donation via the Paypal link aboveOr, consider becoming a monthly subscribing patron of the show here:https://www.patreon.com/timtunesAnd get lots of extra documentation and music associated with the show.

Today is Satursday, October 14th and happy heavenly birthday to President Dwight D Eisenhower. ***EISENHOWER – FAIRWELL SPEECH*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Cobb Schools Wants to Rejoin Map Lawsuit as Elections Board Settles Police Investigate Double Homicide at South Cobb Drive Cobb Commission Moves Forward With 2 Trails in County Master Plan All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb Schools Wants to Rejoin Map Lawsuit as Elections Board Settles The Cobb County School District is seeking to rejoin a lawsuit challenging a school board map that's alleged to be racially gerrymandered. In July, a federal judge ruled that the school district couldn't be held liable but didn't rule on the map's merits. The Cobb County Board of Elections, the only remaining defendant, is settling with the plaintiffs, declining to defend the map. The school district alleges collusion between the elections board and the plaintiffs to favor Democrats. The lawsuit accuses the map of discriminating against communities of color. The school district is appealing to rejoin the case, and it's uncertain who will ultimately defend the map.......…….Get more stories like this from mdjonline.com     STORY 2: Police Investigate Double Homicide at South Cobb Drive The Cobb Police Department is investigating a double homicide at the 4800 block of South Cobb Drive. Initial findings suggest a lone suspect approached the establishment, shot and killed two individuals, and then fled in a vehicle. The suspect's vehicle was tracked using Flock cameras. Officers located the suspect's vehicle, and the incident ended when the suspect took their own life. This appears to be an isolated incident involving known individuals, and there is no current threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Cobb County Police Tip Hotline at 770-499-4111.   STORY 3: Cobb Commission Moves Forward With 2 Trails in County Master Plan Cobb County is progressing with its Chattahoochee River Trail Pilot project, with the Board of Commissioners approving the start of engineering design for the second phase of the two-mile trail. The $3 million allocated for this phase includes $620,000 for the design of a one-mile section by engineering firm Thomas & Hutton. The first phase is already under construction, set to be completed around spring 2026. Commissioner Keli Gambrill opposed the project, citing concerns about funding from a 2016 special-purpose local-option sales tax. Additionally, the commission approved the concept for a four-mile trail connecting Powder Springs to Austell, expecting funding from grants and SPLOST funds. This trail will enhance the county's greenway and trail network. ......................…..(pause) We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. The National Weather Service predicts the rest of the weekend staying dry and featuring partly cloudy skies. Temperature-wise, it will be mild, with temperatures ranging from the low 60s to low 70s. Loose Cannons: A Memoir of Mania and Mayhem in a Mormon Family with Diana Cannon Ragsdale Diana Cannon-Ragsdale was born into a Mormon dynasty. Her father Ted Cannon was a local celebrity in Salt Lake City, and her family's ancestors were contemporaries of Brigham Young—and they had many dark secrets to keep. Growing up at the mercy of her mother's depression and father's undiagnosed schizophrenia, Diana and her five siblings were left to fend for themselves as their mom and dad rotated in and out of psychiatric hospitals and police custody. In Loose Cannons, Diana traces her rebellious 1970s girlhood—amidst her father's multiple suicide attempts and remarriage to her mother's sister. As she and her siblings barreled into adulthoods they weren't ready for, they tried to rely on each other while reproducing broken relationships of their own. Diana Cannon Ragsdale is an author, retired physical therapist, and mental health advocate for survivors of abusive and dysfunctional families. Diana attended Utah State University on a dance scholarship and then several years later received her degree from the University of Utah. In retirement, she has dedicated herself to travel and creativity. Clayton M. Christensen died back in 2020. He was a 67-year-old Harvard Business School professor and management guru. He authored books, “The Innovator's Dilemma” and “How Will You Measure Your Life?" Clayton had leukemia. The title of today's show was taken from a Wall Street Journal article about him. He was a man of faith, a Morman. While attending Oxford University, where he also played basketball, he refused to play in a championship basketball game (he was 6' 8"). Wrote Clayton, “Had I crossed the line that one time, I would have done it over and over in the years that followed." Professor Christensen observed that in the next life God wouldn't likely ask him about being a Harvard professor, but would instead inquire, Can we just talk about the individual people you helped become better people? His 2012 book, "How Will You Measure Your Life?" bespoke how he was driven by faith...not just business. Evidently, he believed helping others was a large component of living a good life. That's our topic in this episode of Leaning Toward Wisdom. It's also on my mind because today is June 10th - my wife's birthday. She's the single most important person in my life and has definitely helped me become better. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! During these difficult and dark days, when most of us were isolated from family, friends, our parishes, and even the Sacraments themselves, this channel was started as a statement of standing against the tyrannical mandates that many of us were living under. Since those early days, this channel has morphed into an amazing community of friends…no…more than friends…Christian brothers and sisters…who have grown in joy and charity.Avoiding Babylon does not criticize the hierarchy or institutional Church, especially Pope Francis. We recognize there is an unprecedented crisis in the Church, but we feel that there are other shows that address these issues that are more qualified than us. Instead, we try to remind ourselves and those who enjoy the channel that being Catholic is a joyful and exciting experience. We seek true Catholic fraternity and eutrapelia with other Catholics who, like us, are doing their best to live out their vocation with the help of God's Grace. Above all, we try to bring humor and joy to the craziness of this fallen world, for as Hillaire Belloc has famously said:“Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,There's always laughter and good red wine.At least I've always found it so.Benedicamus Domino!”https://www.avoidingbabylon.comTelegram Chat:  https://t.me/+0Y7wFEkoovg1NTcx Support the showCheck out our new store!

Betsy Gaines Quammen is a historian and conservationist, and she's also the author of the excellent book "American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God, & Public Lands in the West." Betsy has enjoyed a long career in the conservation world, working on issues ranging from grizzly bears in the West to fish in Mongolia to wildlife in East Africa. She also holds a doctorate in Environmental History from Montana State University, where her dissertation focused on the Mormon settlement of the West and public land conflicts. With such a depth of expertise on such a wide range of subjects, I was thrilled to have Betsy join me for a conversation about her book, public lands, and the West. - "American Zion" has been recommended to me numerous times since it was published in early 2020. Many of my most knowledgeable friends told me it was a must-read for anyone trying to make sense of the present-day threats to public lands here in the West. Well, I finally read it a few weeks ago, and I can confirm that my friends were correct– the book provided me with much-needed, nuanced context for understanding both specific public lands controversies and broader political threats. It also provided fascinating insights into the mindsets and goals of the Bundy family– the people behind the infamous occupation of Malheur Wildlife Refuge and the Battle of Bunkerville. I was also fascinated by the beliefs of the Bundys and their ancestors, and how their ideas about everything from religious texts to the US Constitution have influenced public discourse in the West and beyond. - Betsy and I connected last week and had a fun and educational conversation about everything from her career as a conservationist to her in-person interactions with the Bundy family. We started out discussing how she became interested in the West and why the Morman settlement of the West became the focus of her work. We discuss the Mormon prophets Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, and how and why Mormons settled in the West. We talked about how perceived persecution by the US government has served as a faith-building experience for the Bundys and their followers, and whether or not the Bundys truly believe the prophesies that they preach. We discuss the Sagebrush Rebellion, the Malheur takeover, the Battle of Bunkerville, and how Betsy thinks about her personal safety when writing about potentially violent people. She also talks about how "American Zion" was positively received by her Mormon friends, describes her current book project, and recommends tons of books that you'll want to check out. Links to everything are in the episode notes. - It was great to finally have the opportunity to chat with Betsy, and I sincerely appreciate her taking the time.
