It's essentially impossible for financial advisors to build top practices by themselves. You've got to surround yourself with the right people, and put them in the right roles, to truly elevate your business. That goes double if your goal is to build a world-class advisory business and reach the pinnacle of financial advisor success. You surely don't need me to tell you how difficult it can be to hire, train, motivate and retain great people. But it's probably helpful to understand why the process can be so tough—and, more important, how you can take specific action steps to create a “dream team” of talent that can help bring your practice to a higher level of success than you may have ever thought possible. With that in mind, we asked Kirk Hulett for his best advice. For more than three decades, Kirk has guided elite financial professionals to transform their advisory teams into high-performance engines that drive 58% more revenue than traditional solo models. What helps us stay connected to ourselves and our identities even when we're patients in a healthcare setting? This is the second episode in a 2-part series inspired by listener Debbie Margulies' powerful question about maintaining control in medical settings and managing unhelpful pity from others based on your medical condition. Elizabeth interviews oncology social worker Samantha Hulett about her experience working with patients and their families. In this conversation, Sam shares the importance of identifying for ourselves what our priorities are in life. In addition, she speaks to the importance of slowing ourselves and our providers down in order to ensure that our needs are getting met and we are getting the clarity we need. Key TakeawaysKeeping a journal by the bed can be a useful way to record any thoughts that arise when the distractions aren't as prevalent before bedtime. This can become a tool to help later formulate questions and concerns to take to the doctor. Value-based decision making can be helpful in determining your non-negotiable priorities in your life, even while undergoing medical treatment. Slowing ourselves down before, during, and after medical visits can help us remain clear about the questions we need answered, and to help us remain grounded and centered. Her group utilizes the three-banded panther worm, Hofstenia miamia, which Dr. Srivastava has developed as a new acoel model system. Ten years ago, a Schenectady man and three of his young children died in a horrific house fire in Hamilton Hill. A 5-year-old child named Sa'fyre Terry miraculously survived the blaze, albeit with severe, disfiguring burns. She would go on to make national headlines two years later, when her aunt's social media post asking for Christmas cards on behalf of her niece went viral — cards came in from President Barack Obama and Beyoncé, among many others. Investigators say the fire on Hulett Street was arson. But after 10 years, and a great deal of perjury convictions by players involved with the Terry family, there are no official culprits. On this episode of "The Eagle," cops and courts reporter Robert Gavin looks back at the case. Also on this episode, reporter Larry Rulison gives us an update on the first week of Nauman Hussain's trial in Schoharie. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The pandemic didn't create the need for workplace transformation, but it definitely accelerated it. Listen as two experts in industrial organizational psychology discuss the importance of creating an employee experience that fulfills the evolving needs of the 21st-century worker, and how purposeful employee listening can have a powerful effect on an organization's ability to create a superior experience for their customers. Episode details:What is industrial organizational psychology? It's the study of how business shapes humans and humans shape business — or how to maximize systems and experiences across all parts of the talent lifecycle to encourage people to be their best at work. [3:30]Why is the employee experience so important right now? A huge portion of the workforce is now actively thinking about what's important to them at work, what motivates them, what brings them joy and satisfaction. Employers need to understand these desires — in terms of culture, environment, career development, etc. — so they can keep the employees they have and attract those outside the organization who are looking to make a change. [6:00]Is this all because of the pandemic? The big trends affecting the workplace now — with people wanting more flexibility, inclusion, diversity and autonomy — have been bubbling up for years. What the pandemic did was drive the need for solutions. [7:30]Where does the customer come in? The experience you provide your employees directly affects the experience they provide for your customers. Investing in employees and listening to them helps you embed your mission as their North Star, and results will follow. [10:00]What does “employee listening” really mean? Employee listening is the process of collecting, paying attention to and responding to feedback from your employees. Employees will only invest their time in providing feedback if it is acknowledged and if you respond by taking what actions you can. You must also be sure to communicate the actions you've taken. [13:30]What are some best practices for implementing an employee listening program? Generally, employee listening takes the form of employee surveys. You need balance the frequency of your surveys with your ability to take action. As your process matures, you can increase the frequency, or add in feedback from the entire employee journey. Be sure you understand your infrastructure for feedback and taking action, as well as your culture. These will determine how quickly you can effect change. [18:00]Featured speakersAnna L. Are the most successful companies just the luckiest ones? Why is it that some companies scale quickly while others never really seem to take off? Today's guest highlights the real secret to success, and the secret is leaders who are willing to ACT! Matt Hulett has driven more than $2 billion in value creation as a four-time public company CEO and president and a two-time private company CEO. He is a seasoned technology executive with more than thirty years of experience building and leading world-class SaaS and consumer companies. He has had multiple turnaround successes in the public and private sectors, including Rosetta Stone, RealNetworks, and Expedia. Matt is also the author of Unlock: 5 Questions to Unleash Your Company's Hidden Power. Matt is a man with a particular set of skills, and those skills have taken him far. Rosetta Stone was his most satisfying turnaround, with a clear opportunity for market leadership and increased relevance within a premium market. By looking at technology trends and focusing on a core customer, Rosetta Stone was able to successfully dominate a segment of — but not the entire — market share. By following the same model, Expedia grew from zero to a billion dollars in just three years. Matt may have suffered a bit of imposter syndrome along the way, but he took advantage of the opportunity to learn from the best in the industry and quickly scale Expedia to the powerhouse that it is today. He highlights some of the leadership tactics that he has developed over the last two years through the pandemic, and underscores the importance of maintaining a strategic mindset while also managing “team capital.” No matter your position, if you want to do something big, you have to be able to work with other people. Serendipity, perseverance, network, and capital all play a role in the kind of success that Matt and so many other market leaders have experienced. Zoom's success did not happen by total chance; neither did Slack's nor will any other business. The entrepreneur who understands the edge of the business and is willing to pivot makes all the difference. If you're ready, Matt's new book is the place to start changing your company's destiny.
