Justin is joined by John Michael Heath from EAP Society for a thorough examination of the 2008 album "Christmas Duets" which paired Elvis' original vocal tracks from 1957 and 1971 with 1:1 re-creations of the backing tracks and some of the biggest female entertainers in the field of country music at the time: Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Wynonna Judd, Gretchen Wilson and others, as well as bringing in a couple entertainers Elvis himself had been a fan of in the 70s: Olivia Newton-John and Anne Murray. Often written off as a mere cash-grab, the duo discuss the careers of the album's producers, the talented studio band brought in to replicate the original arrangements, and several other guests that reveal a more nuanced picture of a likely genuine tribute to Elvis that ended up trying to play things too safe and went awry in the process - and the guys ponder what makes artificial duets work or flop. They also discuss the exciting news about Peter Guralnick's upcoming book, now officially confirmed as "The Colonel and the King," releasing August 5, 2025. For Song of the Week, John's selection of "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago," the traditional folk song which Elvis used to link the 1970 concept album "Elvis Country," and the version by Brownie McGhee that Elvis is known to have taken inspiration from, suddenly opens doors that lead to the histories behind numerous other Elvis recordings that will blow you mind, including (but not limited to) our other Song of the Week, "Adam and Evil" from "Spinout." Holidays were hard for Roger Samples in 1975.He was living alone, just him and Josephine the Cat rattling around on Mount Union Road where he was house-sitting for Susan and David Peyton. (As reported earlier, the Peyton family had left town for six months in Lafayette, Louisiana, where Dave was researching Cajun culture for his Alicia Paterson Foundation fellowship project.)Nonetheless, that autumn was a fertile one for Roger and the fledgling Flood. That's because every few days, Joe Dobbs would come by to jam with Rog; when he didn't, Charlie Bowen did. In those waning days of the year, life-long friendships were formed.Holiday AdoptionAs the holidays rolled in, though, the pickings got slim. Busy with Dobbs family affairs, Joe couldn't drop by as frequently. As a result, Roger starting spending many of his evenings at the Bowen house with Charlie and Pamela.“Y'all take in strays?” Roger asked the first night he appeared on their doorstep.“Come on in, buddy! Pull up a chair.”A new routine developed. Getting home from a day of teaching at Mason County's Hannah High School in Apple Grove, Rog would have supper with Charlie and Pamela, then he and Charlie broke out the guitars. That year Roger was even there to help decorate the Bowens' Christmas tree, stringing lights and hanging tinsel while they listened to the new albums by Jackson Browne and David Bromberg, Steve Goodman and John Prine.Pamela usually was the only audience for the tunes Roger and Charlie worked out in those last weeks of 1975, songs like this one, which she recorded in the Bowen living room on Nov. 28, the night after Thanksgiving.About the SongOne of the first things Charlie and Roger learned about each other was their shared love for Bob Dylan songs. For nearly a decade by then, both had been listening to Dylan discs and working up their own versions of his songs.Quickly they found they each had a rendition of “Tomorrow Is a Long Time” which they had heard a few years earlier on the 1971 release of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II.Dylan wrote the song in 1962, including it as a demo for M. Witmark & Son, which became his publishing company at the time. (That particular track, incidentally, has long been available as a bootleg; so has an outtake from the June 1970 studio sessions for Bob's New Morning album.)Over the years, “Tomorrow Is a Long Time” has been covered by many Dylan friends and admirers. Most notably, Elvis Presley recorded it in the spring of 1966, appearing as a bonus track on his Spinout album.Elvis and OthersPresley was taken with the song after learning it from West Virginia's legendary harmonica player Charlie McCoy, who played it the previous year on Odetta's album Odetta Sings Dylan. Dylan has said Presley's cover of the song is "the one recording I treasure the most.”Besides Elvis and Odetta, others who have recorded the song include Joan Baez and Ian and Sylvia (1963), Judy Collins (1965), the Pozo-Seco Singers (1966), The Kingston Trio (1969), We Five and Glenn Yarbrough (1970), Rod Stewart (1971), Sandy Denny (1972).Stay TunedMeanwhile, if you enjoyed today's trek in the time machine, hang around. More of that late ‘75 vibe will be featured in a Flood Watch report next week, including a trio of Roger-and-Charlie originals and some vintage solos by fiddlin' Joe Dobbs. This is a public episode. It is believed that being more porous in nature will enable universities to create a talent pool of graduates with en entrepreneurial mindset and access to the very latest thinking, technology and innovation. But is this enough to stem the tide of talent leaving Malaysia for opportunities elsewhere?Featuring Professor Datuk Dr Paul Chan (HELP University), Professor Veronica Hope-Hailey and Professor Brian Squire (University of Bristol Business School)Find out more about the 'Open for Business' podcast series.
The government of Malaysia has set a target of making Malaysia a regional hub for startups by 2025. As of 2022, there were approximately 3,000 active startups in Malaysia, a stark increase from around 300 in 2013. However, whilst 30% of Malaysian startups have displayed consistent growth and profitability, about 1,800 startups struggle, with a 60% failure rate, especially within the first three years. The failure is majorly attributed to lack of market need affecting 42% or approximately 756 startups. How can universities provide a more robust route to market and accelerate a culture of research incubation and support for entrepreneurs?Featuring Ts. Mohd Roydean Osman (Taylors University) and Simon Bond (University of Bristol) Find out more about the 'Open for Business' podcast series.

Andre's new book, Spinout Ventures: Transition from Employees to Entrepreneurs, is a valuable guide for aspiring entrepreneurs and managers alike, offering practical advice on turning corporate frustrations into entrepreneurial success. --- Start a Spinout Venture with Andre Laplume Good day, dear listeners. Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint Podcast, and my guest now is Andre Laplume, professor at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University and the author of Spinout Ventures: Transitioning from Employees to Entrepreneurs. Andre, welcome to the show. Thank you, Steve. Thanks for the invitation. I look forward to it. So, Andrei, let me ask you, what is your personal Why and what are you doing to manifest it? Yeah, I mean, my personal Why, so I'm a researcher, right? That's my main profession, and I research startups, and entrepreneurship is my main topic of focus. And I've been doing this for about a decade. And what I found out and what led to this book actually is that most prospective entrepreneurs are not really being coached very well that I feel they're being coached down. Perhaps a more mythical path about what entrepreneurship really is and many of them think that entrepreneurship is something they can do at 19 years old or 20 years old, and sometimes it is, but, realistically, a lot of the startups that we're seeing today, the more sophisticated startups, they aren't founded by 19 and 20 year olds. Most of them are actually founded by fairly seasoned employees who have years of experience at a larger company and who have decided to leave and start a company. And I think that the more that I did research on this phenomenon, which we're calling spinouts or spinout ventures, where employees leave to create their own ventures, the more I found out that they were very prominent and also more successful than other types of startups. So that's really what led me down this pathway, that, okay, we're living in a culture where the wrong narrative about entrepreneurship is being pushed, and so my purpose in this is to try to change that narrative and to make it more realistic. And also, I think that that sets better expectations for real entrepreneurs so that they don't believe the myth. Yeah, that is so interesting that you mentioned this myth, because I think it has its uses, but it also has its drawbacks. I think the uses of it is due to a popular idea of entrepreneurship. I think it's not a bad thing. I do think that entrepreneurs need a level of dreaminess or ability to dream in order to get started because the flip side of it is that experts very rarely start companies because they see so many pitfalls and so many potentials to go wrong that it paralyzes them. So in some ways, I think there is a use in mythologizing it. But on the other hand, I do agree. And I think there are statistics that the average founder is actually not 23 years old, but something like 45 or 48 years old or something like that. That's right. I think it's 45. 45. And I remember when I first heard about Ray Kroc and that he started M...

We can all agree that creating a startup is hard but there is an easier way to become an entrepreneur with a much higher probability of success. In this episode of the Payback Time Podcast, Sean's guest Andre Laplume breaks down 5 reasons why a spinout is better than a startup. Andre Laplume is a Professor at the Ted Rogers School of Management and author of the bestselling book 'Spinout Ventures'. Starting a new business is undeniably challenging, requiring immense effort, dedication, and often a bit of luck. However, spin-out ventures provide an alternative path to entrepreneurship with a higher probability of success. They involve transforming an idea already developed within an existing organization into a separate, standalone business. This approach offers several advantages over traditional startups, making it a compelling option for aspiring entrepreneur Key Timecodes (00:35) - Show intro and background history (01:28) - Deeper into his career journey (04:39) - Understanding the spin-out venture definition (07:26) - Deeper into his business model (08:40) - Why spin-outs can be more successful than new startups (11:46) - Commercial break (TYKR mobile app) (12:28) - What an entrepreneur need to know to run that type of business (15:56) - How spin-out founders can work together with other companies (19:42) - Where spin-outs can find funding (22:42) - What are the benefits for the parent companies (26:11) - Guest hot tips (28:45) - One more key takeaway from the guest (34:15) - Guest contacts

We're closing out 1966 with Elvis Presley's third (and final) film: Spinout! We try to parse the plot of Spinout, which is at the same time both totally inscrutable and a re-hash of earlier films, and which Mike has a theory about. We find our first (?) actual good tagline for an Elvis movie, discuss the original pitch for this movie (which Col. Tom Parker shot down), and try to make sense of the creative team's lack of action around a soundtrack solution. Mike sees what this movie is really trying to do (which Joey totally missed). We wonder if food in 1966 was good, why Elvis is so susceptible to reverse psychology, and why they choose to describe women as a "smorgasbord." Elvis saves a marriage, then marries three women. We look ahead to Easy Come, Easy Go.
Elvis returns to Hawaii -- and Viva Pod Vegas is right there with him -- as we talk about Paradise, Hawaiian Style! After kicking off with some Graceland news, Col. Tom Parker drops by the podcast again before Mike recasts the Fantastic Four with Elvis Presley and associates. We run through this movie's mixed bag of taglines, explore the (more interesting than usual) backstories for the other actors in this movie, and lament Elvis's seeming resignation around the songs he had to sing for this movie. We talk about how weird it is that this movie starts with a cold open, find ourselves once again confused by Elvis's many lookalike girlfriends (of which there are more than ever before, but somehow there's no love interest?), and break down the "Elvis + Kid = Great!" streak snapper. We talk about the incredibly low stakes in Paradise, Hawaiian Style, the (truly wonderful) element of this movie we've never seen before, and its unmemorable soundtrack. We look ahead to Spinout.
I'm very excited to present this very special interview with Travis Jeffery, one of my favourite Australian actors whose work I have admired for many years. Travis is best known for his roles in Gallipoli, Angelina Jolie's Unbroken, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Danger Close, The Preacher, Frayed, Last King of the Cross, Heart Break High, and more recently Before Dawn and Planet of the Apes. Three of my favourite films that Travis has started in are Spin Out, Top End Wedding and Bloody Hell. Travis will also star in a stack of upcoming films including Zoe Pepper's Birthright, Myles Pollard's short film, Inheritance, and Adam Morris' Frederickstown. As well as those films I've just mentioned, Travis is also here to discuss his new short film, Dusty. An intensely emotional, moving, and often gut-wrenching film which follows the lead character Dustin, played by Travis. Unable to accept the death of his best friend, Ashely, Dustin goes into voluntary self isolation with a million beers and several bags of cocaine. Amidst the chaos of his grief-induced bender for one, he accidentally mixes his best friends ashes with a very generous line of cocaine, and to his complete and utter confusion, Ashleigh appears. Dusty is also written by Travis, and is direct Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, the veteran Australian actor's directing debut. Throughout this interview, Travis gives us a highly educational insight into the mechanics of being of actor, detailing his journey from growing up on a farm, to starring in major Hollywood productions.
This week's Pathfinder features Chris Taylor, CEO and founder of Aalyria, a Google spinout that specializes in advanced connectivity solutions. The company is developing what could be game changing free-space optics hardware and network orchestration software to meaningfully change communication speed and efficiency across air, space, land, and sea. A PhD student who sets up a spinout and becomes its CEO is 21% better at returning an investor's money than a serial founder would be if installed in the same spinout. Even more impressively, a PhD student turned chief executive is 46% better at making a venture capital fund money than a former CEO from a large company would be.

Kerry and Collin take a look at "The Family Stone," staring Sarah Jessica Parker, Diane Keaton, Craig T. Nelson and an impressive assemblage of actors who make up a family (the Stone family! Get it?) that might be the most annoying family to have to marry into. Who is most worthy of the audience's sympathies in this film? Who is least deserving? How should one dress when meeting a partner's parents for the first time and why should you never so such a thing during Christmas? All this, plus a big ol' pile of blu-rays to look at from the month of August for the Blu-ray Gift Exchange. Films covered in the Blu-ray Gift Exchange: Criterion: "Dim Sum: A Little Bit of Heart" (1985) "Akira Kurosawa's Dreams" 4K (1990) Paramount: "Roman Holiday" 4K Warner Bros.: "Enter The Dragon" 4K (1973) Warner Archive: "Father's Little Dividend" (1951) "Gay Purr-ee" (1962) "The Life of Emile Zola" (1937) "Little Women" (1933) "Spinout" (1966) "Wichita" (1966) Sony Pictures: "American Pop" Universal: "The Doris Day / Rock Hudson Collection" Music Box Films: "Other People's Children" "The Complete Story Of Film"
George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast for a fun and informative review of five of the August Blu-ray releases.

Justin and Gurdip take some time this week to spotlight some notable or interesting versions of songs associated with Elvis that have been covered by other acts, both during and after Elvis' lifetime. For Song of the Week, while Gurdip hops aboard the "Frankfort Special," from the 1960 flick "G.I. Blues," Justin relaxes with the more mellow but sweetly performed ballad "All That I Am" from "Spinout." If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Increasing levels of CO2 in our atmosphere are a big cause for concern. So what if we could find a way to not only remove some CO2 from the air, but turn it into something useful too? Happy birthday, Elvis! This week, we're taking a look back at the 1966 soundtrack for the movie "Spinout," one of the first Elvis albums Gurdip ever owned and therefore one he holds with great affection. Has it been wrongly maligned and lumped in with other movie soundtracks? Or has it earned a place as forgettable 60s fluff? And what to make of the bonus tracks? All that and more, but before that, we react to the single of Jamieson Shaw's fun new "Toxic Las Vegas" remix from Baz Luhrmann's film, mashing up Britney Spears and Elvis, as well as Rolling Stone magazine's placement of Elvis in their Top 200 Singers list. For Song of the Week, Gurdip dons his matador costume and faces down "El Toro," the "Fun in Acapulco" song about an unbeatable bull. Then, Justin delves into Bread's heartbreakingly beautiful minor 1972 hit "Aubrey" then tries to unpack one of the most obscure, rarely-heard Elvis concert recordings and speculate on what a seemingly minor lyrical tweak might have meant, if intentional. Playlist;(sintonía) ELVIS PRESLEY “Follow that dream” (1962)ELVIS PRESLEY “First in line” (1956)ELVIS PRESLEY “Don’t leave me now” (movie versión) (1957)ELVIS PRESLEY “Got a lot o livin to do” (1957)ELVIS PRESLEY “Crawfish” (1958)ELVIS PRESLEY “Danny” (1958)ELVIS PRESLEY “Fame and fortune” (directo en televisión) (1960)ELVIS PRESLEY “Pocketfull of rainbows” (laughing versión) (1961)ELVIS PRESLEY “Wooden heart” (1961)ELVIS PRESLEY “Summer kisses, Winter tears” (1961)ELVIS PRESLEY “Rock a Hula baby” (1961)ELVIS PRESLEY “Happy ending” (1963)ELVIS PRESLEY “Do the clam” (1965)ELVIS PRESLEY “Spinout” (1966)ELVIS PRESLEY “Clambake” (1967)ELVIS PRESLEY “Change of habbit” (1970)ELVIS PRESLEY “Twenty days and twenty nights” (1970) Escuchar audio

Alternate titles for this episode include: "SUVNL", "SNLUV", and "SNL is coming for our jobs". Anyway, SNL did a sketch entitled "Cars 4" last week. And folks, they got the man himself to participate. That's right, with the inclusion of Owen Wilson, it is officially close enough to canonical that we can do a whole episode of our podcast about it. How do we manage to do an entire podcast about a 5 minute comedy sketch? Well, we have to go some places with it, folks. We only hope you're willing to follow us to them. (Also sorry this is a day late, Future Lucas literally just forgot to edit and post the episode. Pobody's Nerfect!)
