POPULARITY
Dr.s Kay and Ray dole out their 8 awards to any reality television shows they watched in the months of April & (half of) May, 2025: The Valley, Summer House, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Southern Charm, Below Deck Sailing Yacht, and, on Netflix, Battle Camp and Million Dollar Secret. If you haven't heard of Netflix's shows, Battle Camp & Million Dollar Secret, they each offer a new premise for challenge-focused reality television–the former a mix between The Challenge and Perfect Match, and the latter a mix between Anonymous and The Trust. The players from Squid Game: The Challenge stole the screen time on Battle Camp, although for different reasons for each. Which of these shows did you watch? Which awards would you give them? For example, our “TESTosterboned” award is given to a reality TV castmate or moment where testosterone boned the acting party and led to a particularly patriarchal (racist, heterosexist) result, in any variety of ways. We call the opposite award, “The Bechdel TEST” (each award has “test” in the name, given our show's name!), which we give to the most feminist, anti-racist or queer moments or castmates of a given month. To whom or what moment might you give these two awards? To whom or what moment might we have? -------------------------------------------------------------------Listeners! This Double Stuf FINAL recap episode of season 3 of The Traitors is more like Mega Stuf, as Dr.s Kay and Ray recap the strategy-packed FINALE & action-packed REUNION! A variety of psych-related topics from gaming reality tv shows show up, such as “your psyche is showing”, where Dr.s Kay and Ray pick a moment or interaction that revealed something about any castmate's mental health or way of being in the world. However, in this episode, Dr.s Kay and Ray spotted more sociopolitical moments than ever, from (internalized) sexism and heterosexism, to pop culture and Bravolebrity references! Who was your sloppiest player of the week? Most strategic? How about from the reunion, specifically? -------------------------------------------------------------------Listeners! In this special discussion, Dr.s Kay & Ray share their highlights from The Real Housewives of New York, season 15, reunion episodes, after discussing the big breakup in Bachelor Nation of Rachel Kirkconnell and Matt James. Matt, the first Black bachelor, and Rachel, his final rose winner (whom he did not propose to, but instead started dating), have broken up after 4 years together. At the end of their season, photographs emerged of Rachel dressed in costume for a southern plantation-themed party, a type of party that glorifies and embraces a time in history marked by white enslavement of black individuals. The RHONY Reunion raised numerous painful topics, including those facing Jessel & Pavit, Brynn & Ubah, and Racquel. Dr.s Kay & Ray discuss these painful topics from a trauma-focused perspective, which leads to both support & constructive criticism of each castmate. For example, in just the backstage scene between Raquel & Brynn, both castmates, while well-intentioned, said implicitly disrespectful things to one another. So, check out what they said & how it was disrespectful, as well as numerous other painful examples of the poor treatment of one another, on this episode of Reality Test!Listeners are invited to visit the Patreon for free atpatreon.com/RealityTest & check out some of the benefits of a free membership & the paid tiers! In this special recap episode, Dr.s Kay & Ray recap the finale of Real Housewives of New York–the episode heard round the world! Brynn & Ubah's reactions both make complete sense, while the bystander reactions (including those of the other women on the show &, now, the public) make much less sense. What can we learn from applying a trauma-sensitive lens to the events of that night? Dr. Kay's MHCU from earlier in the week takes a deeper look at what applying a trauma-focused lens tells us about Brynn–the sad truths & the hard truths–as well as what could've been handled differently and what we can learn, at large, from how audiences have reacted to the finale. Check it out!The Traitors recap episode will still be coming out later this week! Every other week, Dr.s Kay & Ray review any and all of the reality TV they watched over the prior two weeks, awarding moments and/or castmates with their 8 Reality “Test” awards, while discussing the titular topics and more! Three very important topics were raised in the Real Housewives franchises this week. Although not handled perfectly by production, this collective of topics is incredibly, and sadly, relatable for more viewers than not. Thus, some powerful themes and common reactions are raised in ways that allow viewers to learn they are not alone in facing similar themes with similar reactions. Dr.s Kay & Ray discuss the strengths & growing edges of how these themes were handled by Bravo. Castmates and moments are given awards, including the TESTosterboned award (most patriarchal) and the Bechdel TEST (most feminist). Check out the episode to compare their choices to your own! This week, awards went to moments & castmates from the latest seasons of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Real Housewives of New York City, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, and Survivor.—----------------------------------------------------------Reality testing is when we check an emotion or thought we're having against objective reality. This episode is all about the Housewives franchises! Ongoing female friendship drama is revisited in the premiere of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, while the drama focus shifts to different friendships in both New York City and Salt Lake City franchises. And the TESTosterboned (most patriarchal) award gooooes to… whom? Or, what? Hint: the Salt Lake City men bring the patronizing energy we typically get to avoid with the drama focus being on female friendships! What about the opposite award, the Bechdel TEST (most feminist)? Or the TESTimonial award (best confessional)? To which moments or whom did the remaining 5 awards go? To whom would you want them to go?Check out the episode to compare their choices to your own! Dr.s Kay & Ray begin by checking in about their responses (and self-care) in the wake of the election, before they recap ep.s 7-9--both parts of the season finale & The Men Tell All--of the inaugural Golden Bachelorette season. Dr. Kay has been consistently concerned with Chock's crassly controlling & “chocky” comportment, concern that continues through the comprehensive collective of crowning chapters. Dr. Ray pulled out of primordial, patriarchal, precognition that Pascal may prefer pre-60s (pre-50s?) for his primary partners. A little, alliteration, as you'll allow… :) Dr.s Kay & Ray explore their 8 psychology-focused segments while recapping the Golden Bachelorette finale episodes, including what they imagine producers would do differently, if they were psychologists, and the fact there is NO mention of therapy (??) despite this group being perfectly suited to grief work and self-exploration (among other clinical activities). Although cohort effects suggest these castmates are not as comfortable discussing or attending therapy as the generations that follow, that makes it all the more powerful for the Bachelor franchise to normalize seeking therapy--particularly as they waded through so many psychologically-painful, traumatic themes this season. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reality testing is when we check an emotion or thought we're having against objective reality. The Award Show is BACK, baby! After a few weeks of strictly recap episodes, Dr.s Kay & Ray bring back their realiTV awards! They review any and all of the reality TV they watched over the past few weeks, awarding moments and/or castmates with the same 6 awards (all with “test” in their titles)! The topics in the title came up in these episodes of reality television, providing us with fodder for accessible application of our understanding of them to funny and/or problematic interactions and representations.Dr.s Kay & Ray also discuss their emotions, thoughts, and self-care suggestions associated with the election last Tuesday for their check-ins portion at the beginning of the episode. Should you be happy with the outcome of the election, feel free to fast forward through the check-ins to about 20mins in.And the TESTosterboned (most patriarchal) award gooooes to… whom? Or, what? Dr.s Kay & Ray recap episodes 12-13, reviewing the weddings and the reunion of season 7 of Love is Blind. Tim saying, “Y'all want men to take you seriously and then act like this” (as if women don't, at baseline, deserve to be treated equally), Nick Lachey telling Marissa not to date men who think her energy is too much (as if it were her fault that Ramses thought she was too much), Vanessa Lachey asking Monica if Steven's cheating was a red flag (as if she should've known better than to date him, if she didn't want him to do what he ends up doing), and all of the castmates repeatedly naming the cruel things Nick said about Hannah (while trying to get Nick to admit he said them, when there are other ways to hold him accountable) are just SOME of the problematic, victim-blaming & sexist statements that were made on the reunion. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reality testing is when we check an emotion or thought we're having against objective reality. Dr.s Kay & Ray recap episodes 1-6 of season 7 of Love is Blind, after a brief update about yet ANOTHER Bachelor nation castmate who should have been weeded out in the casting process and yet remains in episodes that continue to currently air. Across this and the following podcast episode, Dr.s Kay & Ray incorporate the six psychology-focused segments, such as what sociopolitical topics arose in the episodes and what they would say to a client with a presenting concern that app. For example, they explore Leo's use of power and control in his communication with others, as well as the microaggressions in Taylor and Garrett's discussion about her ethnicity, referencing internalized racism, Anti-Black racism, and the model minority myth. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reality testing is when we check an emotion or thought we're having against objective reality. Dr.s Kay & Ray recap the premiere episode of Real Housewives of New York City (RHONY), season 15, incorporating their six psychology-focused segments. Segments include what would be different if producers were psychologists and what Dr.s Kay & Ray would say to a client with a presenting concern that appears in the episode. For example, producers seem to be promoting Brynn as a villain, despite her having been (seemingly) relationally bullied by the other castmates-- including at the past two events that she hosted (e.g., her self-hosted birthday party!)!
