Today I present to you the extraordinarily versatile, even chameleon-like singer and actor Marni Nixon (22 February 1930 – 24 July 2016), who is no doubt best-known today as the so-called “Ghostess with the Mostest.” Born into a musical family in California, she became involved from an early age with the movies, and by a marvelous set of circumstances became The Voice for a number of Hollywood actresses not known for their singing voices. Her skill in matching the vocal and speech characteristics of each of these performers is exceptional, but she was so much more than that. She pioneered the work of many 20th century giants, including Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Charles Ives, and Anton Webern. She hosted a local Seattle children's television program called Boomerang that netted her four Emmy Awards. She performed on opera stages and concert platforms around the world. She recorded widely, everything from Mary Poppins to Pierrot Lunaire, and in the mid-1970s was the first singer to perform and record Schoenberg's cabaret songs, his so-called Brettl-Lieder, works that are now standard repertoire. Reminiscences of Marni are provided by my good friend Thomas Bagwell, currently a coach and conductor at The Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, who was a colleague and good friend of Marni Nixon's for the last 25 years of her life. This episode features a cross-section of this stunning artist's extensive recorded output, recorded over six decades, including repertoire from Webern to Rodgers and Hammerstein. In between we have examples of Nixon's performances of songs by Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Debussy, Ives, Fauré and her former husband Ernest Gold; concert and song repertoire by Villa-Lobos, Boulez, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Copland, and Gershwin; plus a few outliers, from a live performance of Korngold's Mariettas Lied to the jazzed-up exotica of Buddy Collette's Polynesia to Mr. Magoo's Mother Goose Suite, not to mention a spoonful of Mary Poppins. Overall, “It's a Jolly ‘Oliday with Marni!” Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. In Episode 172 of the Fashion Crimes Podcast, host Holly Katz and special guest Abby Young dive deep into the world of fashion, style, and color analysis. Abby is a personal commercial and fashion wardrobe stylist hailing from the sunny shores of California. Together they explore the significance of color analysis in fashion! LISTEN HERE! KEY TAKEAWAYS: Fashion Styling and Self-Image Transformation Abby shares her remarkable journey from being an eighth-grade teacher (UM WHAAT) to transitioning into the world of fashion styling. She attributes her passion for fashion and her love for teaching as the driving forces behind this transformative career change. Abby also highlights her move from the chill vibes of Minnesota to the vibrant fashion scene of California, appreciating the state's relaxed, bohemian atmosphere. Holly and Abby then take a deep dive into the importance of style and self-expression, especially for mothers who might feel they've lost their fashion mojo after having children. Abby's personal journey may resonate with many listeners who have considered reinventing themselves through fashion. Color Analysis and Personalized Styling As personal stylists, Holly and Abby discuss the art of guiding clients through a personalized style journey. Holly emphasizes the importance of analyzing a client's silhouette and body type, enabling a strong foundation for personalized shopping with elite clients. Abby explains how the aging process can impact color choices, with colors generally remaining consistent every 10 years due to changes in pigmentation of one's complexion. Abby underscores that high-level executives and entrepreneurs should invest in color testing to optimize their appearance and how they're perceived by their audience. She employs various techniques to determine a client's undertones, examining their skin tone across all four seasons and evaluating the contrast between their skin and the colors they wear. Color Analysis and Fashion Advice Holly and Abby explore the intricacies of color analysis, emphasizing that it goes beyond personal preference. Understanding how colors interact with different skin tones is crucial. They urge listeners to seek out trained professionals for in-person color analysis, as digital tests can be unreliable. Color Analysis and The Personalized Styling Process Holly asks about the specifics of Abby's color analysis testing process, including duration and cost. Abby explains that her process typically takes around 30-45 minutes, with clients receiving their reports within one to two weeks. Clients can choose to work with Abby for clothing, makeup, or both. She also provides insights on selecting makeup colors that complement one's skin tone and facial structure. Abby's Mantra: “At the end of the day - or when in doubt on what to wear - wear something that brings you confidence, whether you are sure or not that it looks good, or it's the right color. Wear something that you feel confident in when you leave the house - because mentally - you'll feel more confident, and people will see that.” And that's the short story on this week's episode. Be sure to get the full episode and all our exclusive fashion insights wherever you get your podcasts. We are so grateful for Abby's fabulous fashion insights! If you have a petite body type, finding your sense of style might land you a seat on the struggle bus. Basically, it's about proportion and finding the right balance. One thing is for certain though, there are some common petite pitfalls you need to know to avoid making critical fashion mistakes! In this episode, Your Favorite Personal Stylist Holly Katz answers fashion questions from one of our loyal listeners, and now a Fashion Bestie - about “What to Wear if You are Petite.” One key thing to know: If you are petite, you have special accommodations that you need for a cohesive wardrobe. It's important for you to know that setting yourself up for success is of utmost importance to elevate your style as you age. #TRUTH First, the definition of petite is 5'2”/ 5'3"or under, and wears a Size 2 or smaller. (Be aware that all body types can be petite, so you can add curvy or plus-size to this definition as well. You are still considered petite, but your wardrobe needs will be different.) For the purposes of this conversation, we are going to be talking about very small sizing. The struggle for a petite person to find a good fit is real. It's even harder to find fashionable clothes that fit well. You are most likely spending your life savings to have clothes altered to fit, or worse, buying just about anything that fits off the rack. When styling a petite client, Holly starts with her Wardrobe Checklist: What are the essentials you must have in your wardrobe, regardless of style, body shape, age, or profession? You need a copy of this Wardrobe Checklist! #nonnegosh Please go to this link: https://mailchi.mp/1d6670bb70d8/the-only-wardrobe-checklist-you-will-ever-need Regardless of your size or body shape, you still need the fundamentals and the foundations of well-fitting and intentional wardrobe, and this mostly means undergarments. Don't let your petite status trick you into thinking you don't need a proper bra (after a proper bra-fitting) and shapewear. A petite person has the extra-added step of trying to create the illusion of curves or shape where there might be none, and these can help. PETITE FASHION CRIMES: Wearing oversized or baggy clothing to hide your small size or lack of shape. You also are not required to wear body-con or tight-fitting clothing just because you are petite. Sophisticated slacks, layering pieces and jackets are a great way to give you the illusion of some curves where there are none. You want to balance your bottom half with the top half so you look proportionate. Dressing too young. There is a very fine line between wearing something that makes you look like you're in your 20s instead of your 40s because you are petite. Make sure your aesthetic is “polished and put together.” No shopping in junior's and no shopping in the kids section. #never This lends itself to the saying: Just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD. Case in point: When you are smaller size, you may think you can wear younger style trends, for instance, cut-off jean shorts. HOWEVER, at a certain age, you need to have a 7 or 8-inch inseam, with no cheeks hanging out. If that is your jam, you must have a sophisticated look to go along with it: Add a summer sweater, chunky jewelry, maybe a kimono (to cover your butt). And then continue to add your grown-up accessories, like a stellar handbag and shoes. That is Holly-approved petite style. WHERE TO BUY STYLISH PETITE CLOTHING: As always, go to Holly's Pinterest board to see all of the styles and brands mentioned in this episode: https://www.pinterest.com/hollykatzstyling/top-petite-size-clothing-picks/ The key to fashion success is to try on your clothing before you buy it! Many stores and brands carry smaller sizing or petite options: Anthropologie: https://www.anthropologie.com/petite-clothes Banana Republic: https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=1178236&nav=meganav%3AWomen%3Amore%20sizes%3APetites Lovers and Friends: https://www.loversandfriends.us/?navsrc=main Moda Operandi: https://www.modaoperandi.com/ Etro: https://www.etro.com/us-en/women/ Edited Pieces: https://editedpieces.com/ Aritzia: https://www.aritzia.com/us/en/home Chiara Boni, Le Petite Robe: https://us.chiaraboni.com/ Petite Studio NYC: https://www.petitestudionyc.com/ Levi's: https://www.levi.com/US/en_US/ ASOS: https://www.asos.com/us/women/petite/cat/?cid=4177 YSL: https://www.ysl.com/en-us/shop-women/ready-to-wear/fall-23-looks KEY TAKEAWAY: Just because you wear a small size does not mean you can stay stuck in a style rut becuase you have been the same size forever. In fact, you may have to work harder to try new things and find items that fit you well so you can elevate your style. Buying off the rack is a privilege if you can wear a straight size. Just know that MOST people in the world, petite or not, have to make the clothes work for them by using a great alterations person on the regular. But YOU CAN DOOOO IT! Getting the right ingredients when cooking or baking is pertinent in a successful recipe. Building an outfit is no different. When you get dressed every day, you should be wearing the correct-fitting undergarments to support your outfit. #please Join us on this episode as Your Favorite Personal Stylist, Holly Katz, outlines the “Top Undergarments You Need to Own!” Listen Now Here: https://apple.co/2XXKHfC When you are deciding what to wear, choosing the correct undergarments can make or break how you feel about yourself in your clothes. That's what your clothes should be doing for you: serving you and making you look your best. Because when you look your best, you feel your best. #trademark! Backstory: When Holly is working with clients to help solve their closet chaos, her rule #1 is: “The older and out of date your undergarments are, the more unsexy and unflattering you feel.” So, to rectify this problem, you need to take inventory every year or so, and clean out your underwear drawer. You know which underwear and bras make you feel the best. So, keep those (as long as they are in good condition) - and get rid of the rest. HOT TIP: Follow along on Holly's PINTEREST Board for all these amazing suggestion and where to buy them at https://pin.it/3Yh0nsd THE TOP UNDERGARMENTS YOU NEED TO OWN: Seamless Underwear Correct-Fitting Bras Boob Tape, Nipple Covers and Backless Bras Shapewear Bottoms Shapewear Tops THE WEAR AND CARE OF YOUR UNDERGARMENTS: Underwear, of course, you wash after every wearing (which means you replace more often, too). Bras can be worn many days in a row before washing is necessary – because you don't work out in your regular bras. (Sports bras, you wash). Shapewear can be worn more than once, as well, as long as the support stays strong. The key to laundry care is to not be overly aggressive in your washing machine cycles or with detergents. AND, you never put undergarments in the dryer. Heat breaks down the stretchy fibers you need for support. Also, do not hang your bras to dry by the straps (again, all the stretch is there). Just lie flat to dry. HOW MUCH TO SPEND ON UNDERGARMENTS: Holly has a tried-and-true formula: CPW which is the ‘Cost Per Wear' that she swears by. If you are going to wear an item 100 times, is $100 too much to spend? You do the math that makes the most sense to you, but that is not expensive when you consider the CPW. The adage of ‘you get what you pay for' really makes sense when you spend money on workhorse items like supportive undergarments. HAVE YOUR ARSENAL READY! Take the time to get professionally fitted for bras of all sorts, try on shapewear items and purchase the ones that solve your support issues best, and try boob tape and nipples covers to see what works best for you. #likedoitnow Then, when you have an occasion or a new outfit, you will be ready to go with the strong foundations you need to look and feel your best. You won't be scrambling at the last minute. This is key to having a succeful wardrobe. WE INTERUPT THIS PODCAST FOR A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! We are back this week to talk about swimsuits. And not just any suits, but Swimsuits for All! #slayallday Shopping for swimsuits can be a stressful, vulnerable, and frustrating experience. It's doubly so when your favorite store doesn't carry a cute style in your size, or when all the ones in your size were clearly treated as afterthoughts. #rude As the online swimwear leader since 2005, Swimsuits For All is known for swimsuits with superior construction, expert fit and innovative designs. Today they continue to push the boundaries of style and size in the women's swimwear space. The brand makes stylish, size-inclusive women's swimwear in sizes 4 through 44. Yes, you read that right. Your favorite personal stylist – Holly Katz - has been a fan, a customer, and a big promoter of Swimsuits for All for many years. Its lineup includes one-pieces, bikinis, swim dresses, tankinis, and cover-ups, and most of its suits cost less than $100. #amazeballs Even for the ones that cost more, you can usually get them at a generous discount during one of the brand's many online sale events. Through perfect-fitting swimwear catered to EVERY BODY, Swimsuits For All inspires women of all ages, shapes and sizes to be confident and carefree in the swim they're in. Join Holly for an exclusive interview at the NYC headquarters of Swimsuits For All with their Director of Design, Kristina Guilmain and VP, Brand Manager Bryan Bance. MEET KRISTINA AND BRYAN: As the Director of Design, Kristina and her team create swimwear that fits well, looks beautiful and encourage confidence through masterful design and construction, cutting edge fabric technologies and size inclusivity. Kristina is a swimwear expert and is a passionate swimwear lifestyle person who, she says, was basically born on the beach. Bryan serves as VP, Brand Manager, and comes to the brand from Levi's (did you listen to our last episode??). Bryan brings his experience of understanding the personal fit issues of jeans to the very personal fit issues of a swimsuit. Both are fashion areas that are hard to fit and require a deep understanding of how the customer feels about their body. Knowing their core customer and learning about their “pain points” when considering swimsuits is key to the brand's success. Once they understand the issues or concerns of their customers, the real design and construction work begins. THE ANATOMY OF A SWIMSUIT: #veryimportant Interior Components: The interior of the suit is what gives your body the support it needs. Swimsuits for All uses a power mesh layer that firmly holds you in from the inside. This lining lets the fabric on the outside be bump-free and smooth while supporting, slimming, or lifting from the inside. “The support of the swimsuit is within.” Other Key Elements: Underwire is your friend, especially when it is wrapped and made to be comfortable. Added to this support area is the “bust band.” The straps are not what hold your boobs up it's the band. Truthbomb: One size does not fit all. Customers often need different bra cup sizes for each swimsuit size, and adjustable back clasps. Adjustable shoulder straps are the last line of defense for support. They should never dig into your shoulders, and they are not meant to hold the full weight of your breasts. BUTT COVERAGE: Depending on when and where you are wearing a swimsuit, your desired butt coverage may vary. Swimsuits for All offers 3 main coverage options: Cheeky Cut: shows your cheeks! Full Coverage: covers your cheeks! Modern Coverage: in-between full and cheeky and offers a cut that is still sexy and modern. SIZE RANGE: Inclusivity sizing means just that: sizes for everyone. They offer swimsuits in sizes from 4-44. But not every suit is for every body. So, providing a multitude of styles is critical to offering a wide range of sizes. IN CONCLUSION: The success of Swimsuits for All is based on meeting their customer's needs in the swimsuit category: Bust support: they offer the most options. They serve a segment in the market for women who cannot find the fit or the product they are looking for. They offer a wide range of real sizes (XL at a box store is not Plus Size), inclusive sizing and mix-and-match sizing. STYLE MANTRAS: Designer Kristina: “Swimwear is not a “throw-away” piece. It can be an investment piece. Buy something that serves more than one purpose. We achieve that with the versatility of our pieces.” Marketer Bryan: “We want to give you the gift of confidence. We want to make sure that, when you are out and about in a swimsuit, you don't care what someone thinks about you. You are not thinking about what others think because you love the way you look and feel" Connect and support brands the brands we love, starting with Swimsuits for All. Did you know that it's the 150th Anniversary of Levi's 501 jeans? We are betting that no matter how old you are right now as you listen to this podcast, you probably went through an era of wearing the iconic 5-button-fly, unisex classic style. AMIRITE!? These jeans date all the way back to 1873. The original 501 jeans by Levi's have stayed true and timeless for well over 150 years. And they're not stopping anytime soon. From rebels to rockstars to factory and millworkers and farmers alike, 501 jeans have been a staple for everyone. In fact, 501 jeans just get cooler and hipper, the older and more worn they appear. Throughout their history, there was no social class, gender, religion, or creed that 501's did not fit. So, when you wear 501s, you are not pigeonholed into any demographic other than being part of Levi's revolution - and what a revolution it is. The style is still true today to the original 501 core values of price, craftsmanship, and durability. And it's now coupled with Levi's modern sustainability efforts. We mean, you literally cannot destroy these things! THE HISTORY: 501 jeans are the oldest style of the Levi's brand. Back in the late 19th century miners and factory workers needed a pant that was sustainable enough to withstand the harsh elements, in addition to keeping their shape and durability over time. Levi Strauss was a Jewish immigrant who sailed to New York City in pursuit of the American dream from Bavaria, Germany. He joined his family in the dry goods business where he was selling what was called “waist overalls,” which was the name for denim pants. He then worked with a tailor from Reno, NV who added copper rivets to reinforcement to the pocket corners. From there, they were awarded a patent for the process of adding the rivets and started to manufacture them in San Francisco, where Strauss was living. Eventually, ladies and children's styles followed, but it wasn't until the 1960s that baby boomers adopted the name “jeans.” LEVI's TODAY: Today, the company boasts a collection of over 400 styles and rinses (colors). The Levi's company is using its birthday to bring forth its efforts on becoming more sustainable and use less energy and water to produce and dye their products. Expect to hear about the release of the plant-based 501s that are made from 97% renewable resources. Now, we don't even know what that means, but we're gonna find out because Holly is gonna get a pair and we are going to learn about this company and its practices! #Yay! HOT TIP: Please look up all of the work Levi's has done to help make the planet a better place! We didn't know how extensive it has been, and now that we do, we love them even more. WHAT JEANS ARE BEST FOR YOU? Obviously: FIT IS FIRST. Not a price point. The 5 Factors: the rise, stretch factor, support, rinse, and price. Don't go by inseam. Most of the time, jeans will be too long. (Note: check out Holly's Pinterest board for all of the recommendations on this episode at: https://pin.it/7fyf8ip) THE RISE: The rise is the distance from your crotch up through your seat to the top of your waistband. So, if you go in between your legs, it is at that point where all of the panels connect. The rise determines where the pants sit on your body and can create, or alter, where your perceived waistline is. You will see “high rise,” “low rise” and everything in between. Based on your body type, the “rise” you choose depends on the fit you are looking for. The Brands Holly Recommends: Mother: https://www.motherdenim.com/collections/denim L'Agence: https://lagence.com/collections/denim Frame: https://frame-store.com/collections/denim-women Paige: https://www.paige.com/women?filters=%7B%22PRODUCT%20TYPE%22:%5B%22DENIM%22%5D%7D&page=1 Rag and Bone: https://www.rag-bone.com/womens/jeans/ Guess: https://www.guess.com/us/en/women/apparel/jeans-and-denim/view-all/ NYDJ: https://nydj.com/collections/nydjs-women-jeans Wranglers: https://www.wrangler.com/shop/women-jeans Levi's: https://www.levi.com/US/en_US/clothing/women/jeans/c/levi_clothing_women_jeans HOT TIP: Do not get hung up on what style is in style. If skinny jeans are your best fit, wear them forever. What jean fit your body best never go out of style. WHAT TO WEAR WITH JEANS: Any. Thing. Jeans are the new black. They are high fashion. They are low fashion. They are high-low fashion. That is what makes them fabulous and acceptable in most places these days. And, you can never have too many, or too few. But they are a staple, and you need to have some. Style them with everything from cowboy boots to sandals. Dress them up with a nice top and jacket or be fun with a rock-n-roll T-shirt. BOTTOM LINE: Style your jeans up: Accessorize, accessorize, accessorizes. A nice handbag, killer shoes, and statement jewelry can transform any jean into a stylish outfit. We are so honored and thrilled to have our Fashion Bestie, Supermodel EMME, back with us on the podcast this week! She is here to share her favorite summer fashion picks and give us a short recap from our last show where we interviewed the winner of her “Fashion Without Limits” competition, Nina Chen. Go back to EP 152 and have a listen! EMME's Favorite Summer Fashion Picks: Our BFFF (best fashion friend forever), EMME spent some time in Mexico this summer at Rancho La Puerta, a wellness resort in Tecata on the Mexican border - and as you can imagine - it was HOT and SUNNY! So, what are her secrets for beating the heat while staying in style? A large reed beach bag that she cannot leave home without. A large sun hat, long sleeves and clean-ingredient sunscreens! Anything linen. She says breathability is key, so go with the wrinkles if you are hot! Smocked Tops (you may even be able to go without a bra if you do it right). Any sort of tunic which will provide cool and stylish coverage – think Morocco. NYDJ skinny jeans. Gladiator sandals. Fresh pedicures (due to a “hiking toe”). Bathing suits that will stay on her body because she likes to move around in the water. Favorite swimwear brands include Anne Cole and Nautica – whose designs bridge the gap between coverage and style. Hot Tip: check out Swimsuits for All* for the best selection of women's swimwear! *As we speak, Holly is wrapping up an interview at the SWIMSUITS FOR ALL headquarters in NYC. Stay tuned for that episode! EMME's vision for Fashion Without Limits Design Competition To recap: Supermodel Emme is a Division 1 college athlete who put “athletic curvy” on the map and rose to fame in the mid-1990's as the world's first plus-size Supermodel, and is once again shedding light on size inclusivity in the fashion industry. After beating cancer a few years ago, EMME felt strongly about creating a legacy project. The result of this vision was the creation of the Fashion Without Limits Design Initiative. Teaming up with her alma mater Syracuse University and online plus-size retailer OneStopPlus (OSP), the nationally recognized advocate for body positivity, health and wellness is promoting fashion inclusivity in the classroom with the 8th Annual Fashion Without Limits (FWL) Design Competition. Emme enlisted the help of fellow advocate and veteran plus-size fashion designer Zahir Babvani, head of design & style for OneStopPlus, to inspire a new generation of up-and-coming fashion designers to put their talents to work for the silent majority -- the estimated 70 percent of American women who wear sizes 12 and up! #FACTS Emme says that she created this competition to galvanize the design school community around the exciting career opportunities in one of the fastest growing, yet most under-served, segments of the fashion industry. The 1985 Syracuse University grad, athletic Hall of Famer, and Fashion Without Limits founder says, “Learning from successful designers like Zahir Babvani shows young designers that this is a rewarding career path. Syracuse University is at the forefront of making inclusive design an exciting area of concentration, giving tomorrow's designers the skills, and ability, to enact real change on the fashion landscape. We hope this program will become a template for other schools moving forward.” According to Emme, curvy women are professionals, celebrities, mothers, daughters and sisters. “All women want to feel special, confident, and secure in their clothes. At Fashion Without Limits, we believe that love, happiness, and success have no size limits. Our goal is to offer fashion design students an inclusive curriculum that enables them to provide women of all shapes and sizes with the apparel they want and deserve.” – EMME It has been so fun catching up with the delightful EMME. We will continue to follow her Fashion Without Limits program, and her mission to change fashion for the better with size-inclusive styles. #YAAASSSS! Thank you, EMME! VOTE FOR US! We are so honored to have a very special guest for our Designer Spotlight series this week! Introducing Marrisa Wilson, of Marrisa Wison NY - an up-and-coming fashion designer you need to know - and the recent winner of the 2023 Fashion Group International Rising Star Award, Ready-to-Wear Category. #YYYAAAAASSSS As you know, one of Holly's passions is supporting new designers, small businesses, and especially women entrepreneurs that are changing the fashion industry for the better. This series in our podcast gives us the opportunity to learn about how fashion is created, and to peek behind the seams (pun, get it? ha!) to learn about the art of fashion and the artists who create it. Have you ever wondered how someone becomes a fashion designer? A painter? Or any sort of creative producer? Of course, it takes raw talent. And it usually presents from an early age. We hear this often, as is the case with Marrisa. But it takes an extra spark. And grit. And courage. And, of course, hard work. If anyone tells they got lucky in the fashion business, don't believe them. ABOUT MARRISA WILSON NY: Marissa Wilson, New York is a contemporary women's wear brand based out of New York. The idea behind this brand is that they want their customers to “wear their soul.” Marrisa, the creator and designer, is a first-generation Guyanese-American who uses the natural influences and inspiration of her Caribbean home as she hand-draws and hand-paints the prints that are eventually transformed into her unique designs. She puts a lot of love into each print she develops, as she really wants the wearer to be able to bring out their own personality through her bold colors and soft, easy silhouettes. Her company first launched in 2016. But in 2021, they started to show at New York Fashion Week and things really started to really evolve. HOW IT STARTED: Marissa wanted to be a fashion designer from a really young age. Her mom is a creative person, and she comes from an entrepreneurial family. She was raised in a family-owned business growing up. So, it didn't seem crazy to get out of school and start a business right away. When she was in the second grade, her mom was upholstering the cushions and curtains around their house, so there were little scraps of fabric all around and she started playing with them. Surrounded by her Barbies, she started draping and pinning and that's when her mom first taught her how to hand sew. She eventually went to school to study fashion, majoring in fashion design with a double minor in fashion merchandising and product development. She then went on to study under some of the best in the business, doing internships and undergrad work in the industry and gaining a lot of experience as she was building the idea of her business. She worked for companies such as J. Mendel and Oscar de la Renta, and has the affiliate experience, as well, with mass brands like DKNY, Calvin Klein, and hip brands like Rag and Bone. Having all these experiences in her back pocket, she made a point to take in everything that she could learn along the way for her own business. This really put her on the path to entrepreneurship. From being present in the design room, the fabric rooms and onto product development, she was able to really understand the entire supply chain process. “So, going from that process from how do you take a concept that you've developed into a design? How do you bring it to life, not just in that first sample, but also how to make it production-friendly, and how to make it so that other people can actually wear those clothes? This is what I learned early.” – Marissa Wison THE TARGET AUDIENCE: The MARRISA WILSOIN NY client is anyone who feels like they want to push the bounds of what they add to their wardrobe. This woman wants to wear something different, but they don't want it to be fussy, or have difficulty figuring out how to do that. Marrisa likes to make sure that the wearer feels they can be themselves and bring out their own shine and their own light through her clothes. She is intentional to design without ego. It's not about her creating a perfect archetype of who she wants to wear her clothes. What she really enjoys is when someone is trying on an interesting color or print they might not have tried before, and then there's a sort of ease when they think: Hmmm, this kind of thing works for me! The art is really through the textiles, she feels. Marissa loves interesting prints, embroidery techniques and beading. You might have a favorite pair of jeans or a favorite blazer that you might be able to pair her designs with. She hopes her clients can incorporate Marrisa Wilson NY into their existing wardrobes by allowing people to have the freedom to step outside the box by adding something really special, without the fear of going too far. DOWN TO BUSINESS: As an artist, Marrisa can always create spectacular print designs. But as a business-owner, she must consider production, supply and demand, and what customers are looking for. Issues like sizing, style trends, manufacturers, textile suppliers, sustainability, buyer demand, and buyer purchasing habits all factor into each and every creation. Marrisa credits a Made-to-Order business model on a part of her success. By allowing customers to choose which designs they want before they are manufactured allows her to collect information what her clients want. Why produce an entire season of styles without knowing what customers will buy? Instead, she puts her designs out there, and produces what her customers are indicating they want via pre-orders. Through this process she has learned things like the importance of deep sizing options. Her buyers have indicated size trends and demand well before production, so she knows exactly the size range she needs to produce. They have partnered with an agent overseas, who makes sure that all their brand values are carried throughout the product development. MARRISA WILSON NY works with factories that do small batches. These not massive factories. They work with mills that can take their smaller batch runs. Marrisa loves these relationships, because these are partners who are looking to grow with them, and who are doing it in a small, controlled, and sustainable way. WHAT ELSE? Marrisa and Holly spend the rest of this episode discussing her latest collection, with influences from her Guyanese heritage: think of tropical trees and palm trees, and an easy-breezy lifestyle. She is also planning her upcoming wedding (in Seville) and she in is NOT designing her own dress. #YASSSGURL And finally, Marrisa is already working on her 2024 collection, and consider what Fashion Week might bring. We cannot wait! In her final thoughts, Marrisa shares her truth bomb, and that is to “Dress for Your Soul.” We couldn't agree more. That's what we preach. Wear what you love and make sure it's Holly-approved..(duh). Please follow and support our new Fashion Bestie Marrisa Wilson NY on Instagram and on their website at www.marrisawilsonny.com. This week on the FASHION CRIMES PODCAST - new to our Designer Spotlight series: Hila Weinberg, creator of @biliblond swimwear. Hila is the owner and head designer behind the label BILIBLOND. BILIBLOND's vision is to make women feel beautiful and comfortable when they are most exposed. Hila creates swimwear for the real woman, styles that sculpt and flatter a range of body types. As a native of the Mediterranean city of Tel Aviv, Hila and her design team draw huge inspiration from the city's ethnic mixture and its warm and sunny climate. “We make luxury, high-quality swimwear that shapes, tones, and compliments your body without compromising on our edgy look.” You are going to LOVE this body-positive conversation with your favorite personal stylist, the hostess with the mostest, and the ONLY Holly you need to know: @hollykatzstyling. Be sure to watch the video of the interview on our youtube channel here! About Hila and the beginnings of Biliblond: After the birth of her second child, Hila Weinberg was looking for swim styles that would suit her as a mom, but she still wanted to look and feel cool. Like many women, she had a new body to navigate after pregnancy. Many of her body areas had changed, and she found she needed more support in the bust, the stomach… you know, everywhere! When it came to a swimsuit, she wanted something that looked great, accentuated the curves of her new shape, but wasn't matronly. And, she was not willing to compromise on design. So, like many entrepreneurs, she founded her business by fulfilling a need in the marketplace – primarily her own! She soon found she was not the only woman who was looking for quality fabrics, fit and style when it came to women's swimsuits. “Sometimes you are lucky to find the right niche. You think you are creating for yourself, to solve your own problem. But then I found a whole segment of women who couldn't find the right swimsuits, especially online. They were just like me!” - Hila Weinberg Hila thinks of her design like it is architecture – she loves angles and straight cuts. Although our bodies very fluid and round, the goal of architecture is to frame things. Her designs are cut to frame as well, in a way that is very flattering to the body, with shapes that frame the curves. And when it comes to fabric for her designs, Hila looks for sustainable recycled fabrics. She works with several companies that make recycled fabrics, and always looks for a fabric that is heavier than the usual swimsuit fabric. Sometimes she will use double the fabric, although that is often more expensive, but it really does the job. Hila tells us that there is so much technology now for swimsuit fabric, she can use a wide variety to support her designs and her customer's body shape. So, what about fit? What sizes does she design for? Of course, Biliblond designs the usual sizes, but Hila found that she can easily adapt her designs to fit today's women in larger sizes, too. “I never want someone to be embarrassed, to feel badly, when they shop for my product and can't find their size. We create styles for every size.” – Hila Weinberg Biliblond's suits run in the price range of $100-200. Hila stresses that when she younger, and without a lot of money, that was the goal she set in her mind for spending on fashion. She still feels you can have nice style in that price range. It is important to her to give this access to more women. Biliblond designs are created in Tel Aviv, Israel, where Hila is from. The factory she uses is in the north of Israel, and while she says it is not a very big village, it is like a family to her. Even though her own business is not extremely large, the factory has great capacity, and they work together all year long. They produce together all year long because it is important to Hila. She is their biggest customer, so she feels the need to take care of them and to make sure they have enough business to keep them in business. In this episode, Hila shares some of her favorite designs, as well as some fresh, new designs to the line! She and Holly discuss sun protection for your skin, and how to extend the life of your swimsuits through proper care and laundry practices. And of course, Holly sneaks in some FABULOUS ideas on how to expand on a swimsuit investment by wearing a gorgeous Biliblond suit beyond the beach! Love a certain swim top? Wear it under a jean jacket or blazer! Think beyond the beach! Bililblond has not hit the fashion runways yet, but we think this is a rising star! The design and fabric choices are perfect for ANY body, and can give you the confidence to enjoy wearing a swimsuit, even when you aren't sure you want to. #YouCanDoIT Please support this small business and female-owned designer! We love to highlight the talent of new designers that can problem-solve fashion for the over 40 gang – and we mean – wayyyyy over 40! Thank you to Hila for being our guest this week! Please visit BILIBLOND at www.biliblond.com and on Instagram here. That's it for this week! Got fashion questions? Send them to Holly! Then, join us, follow us, and hang with us every Friday! Are you in the market for a new bathing suit? Swim season is just around the corner, so if you are starting to think about a new suit this year, then you are in luck! #yourewelcome Holly has been on the lookout for the what's new for 2023 – and as always – how to shop for swimsuits that are CORRECT FOR YOUR BODY TYPE, not just for the latest fad. During this style recon, not only did Holly check out her tried and true brands (Miracle Suit), but she has taken all the work and fear out of finding new bathing suits brands that you need to know (Biliblond)! Designer Spotlight: Hila, founder of Biliblond coming up next week! HOT TIP: Go to Holly's curated Pinterest board for this episode. #facts This week, Holly starts out with a big fat truth bomb: ACCEPT YOUR BODY FOR WHO YOU ARE TODAY; not 10 lbs from now, not 20 lbs from yesterday. Let's not focus on how to be skinnier, or how to be more in shape. We need to thank our bodies for everything it does for us each day. Let's celebrate it instead of shaming it. Take a good look, folks. This right here. This is as good as it gets. Okay? This is it. This is the way my body looks. AND THAT IS OKAY! What you ARE going to do is embrace your body type, and where you are in the moment. You do not need to be perfect to find the perfect-fitting swimsuit. #fashionfact So, instead of missing out on family vacation time, or girls' trips, or just some fun in the sun, EMBRACE who you are and what you've got. Because there IS a swimsuit for that. #fashionforeveryone “This will bring you to better bathing suit karma, and help you find what you are looking for.” - Holly Katz HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT BATHING SUIT If there is something you don't like about your body, or don't like wearing a bathing suit – we can work on that. Problem areas: Do you like to hide your stomach? Do you need more coverage on your backside? Big boobs? No boobs? This is where you start. If you know your problem areas, then you can find solutions. But this doesn't come easy. You must try on swimsuits. You can even go to specialty shops and be FITTED FOR A SWIMSUIT. Just like your foundational pieces, like a bra, go get professional help if you can, to help you learn about the right fit. HOT TIP: The only people who can shop for swimsuits at Target or other big box stores are 14-year-olds who don't have body and fit issues. The styles in those stores are not for women who need to manage their body type. #PERIOD! On the flip side of that, don't give up and end up in your Grandmother's Swimming Outfit. Matronly-fitting suits are not the answer to finding a swimsuit that helps you with your body type. More fabric is not fashion. Just like clothing, don't hide behind a suit that's "safe" because its the only one that you will be seen in public in. Shop for fit first. Get a bathing suit that fits and gives you the support you need and solves your problem areas. Even if you have to look a little longer, or a little harder. Buy the suit that FITS, regardless of the color. If it fits well, the color doesn't matter. You aren't shopping for price or color. You are shopping for fit first. Don't take the easy way out. Look for quality fabric. If you can see through the fabric, it's a No-Go. Is it stretchy? Are the seams reinforeced and durable? Are the straps adjustable? Will it compliment your figure? Is this something you can feel confident in? Holly's favorite swimsuit brands: Norma Kamali Dolce & Gabbana Johanna Ortiz Miracle Suit Trina Turk Biliblond DO NOT SKIMP ON PRICE FOR SWIMSUITS #sorrynotsorry Please do not skimp on a bathing suit because of price. Don't do it. You can fight Holly on this if you wish. People often want something quick and cheap because they don't wear a bathing suit very often, or they're only in a bathing suit once a year. A quality bathing suit can last several years. If you take care of them properly, maybe 3-4 years! If you go on vacation once every few years, please get a decent bathing suit for around $150 to $200. You will love the way you feel in it! HOT TIP: If you splurge on a bathing suit that looks amazing for your body type, you're going to want to wear a bathing suit more. Just like clothes. The better you feel, your self-esteem only goes up from zero. #facts DON'T FORGET A COVER UP AND ACCESSORIES! A cover up provides you with sun protection and allows you to walk around in public without any body parts hanging out. You need a transitional fashion item to get you around until you are pool or beach side. You don't have to be matchy-matchy, but your bathing suit and cover up should coordinate somewhat. Holly LOVES a kimono or a knit dress – something that allows your fabulous-fitting swimsuit to be seen, but with a bit of mystery. #yyyaassss HOT TIP: An oversized T-shirt from your kid's school carnival is NOT a cover up. #nogirl You want to think about putting an outfit together when you're going to the beach! Part of the cover-up area is a stylish hat! A big sun hat just makes you look more fabulous. In addition, you need a fun tote bag. This is your ‘handbag' for the beach. Don't skimp here and walk around with plastic bags, book bags, canvas bags - and god-forbid – the rubber CROCS tote bag. Make your husband carry the over-loaded beach bag. Get yourself something chic and super cute for your sunglasses, sunscreen, and beach read! This does not need to break the bank. CARE FOR YOUR SUITS For the care and maintenance of your bathing suits, you can wash them with your regular wash - but do not dry them in the dryer. There are specialty or delicate detergents you can use, if you like, too. Lay your suits flat or hang them to dry. Bathing suits should not lose their color. They should not get stretched out. With the right care, your swimsuit should last for a few years! Ok, that is it for this week fashion besties. Don't let your body issues stand in the way of looking fabulous this summer. We believe in yooouuuuuu! Shout Outs of The Week! Thank you to Beth who asked about clogs (uhm, no.), and to Vickie and Jenny who wrote in this week! Are you a packing procrastinator? Or do you start planning your trip outfits the second you buy airline tickets? Regardless of how (or when) you pack, there is zero debate on “what to pack.” This week, your favorite personal stylist – Holly Katz, aka The Hostess with the Mostest – gives you the run-down on her “Vacation Must-Haves Packing Checklist.” You do not want to leave home without it! What to pack, how to pack, when to pack, forgetting to pack…. All this drama can totally ruin your vacation vibe. #GOODVIBESONLY So, if you've been planning the trip of your dreams, or just a weekend celebration like a graduation, a wedding, the in-laws 50th wedding anniversary (sorry) – then the best way to ensure you will enjoy every minute of your trip is to know what to put in your suitcase without even blinking an eye, or scrambling for last-minute outfits. #FASHIONCRIME PRO TIP: Holly has curated a perfect Pinterest Board with easy to find and pack travel wardrobe examples. She also has a FREE Travel Wardrobe Checklist – available only to our podcast listeners and newsletter subscribers. THE PACKING PLAN: If you are going away on a lovely vacation, or just taking a long weekend for an important life event, you need stuff to wear for multiple occasions. Even just a ‘beach trip” requires specific outfits and multiple items – from shoes and jewelry to casual and formal wear. Do not kid yourself that all you need is a bathing suit. #BadPlan Pick your suitcase. Holly does not advise the “carry-on bag” plan. Grown-up people need multiple outfits, shoes, accessories, and toiletries when they travel. If you are going somewhere where you need to “show up,” do not plan on re-wearing outfits or wearing clothing that has been stuffed into a carry-on. #NotOK #YouWillCheckABag Don't forget about your carry-on bag: critical for personal travel items you will always need access to during travel. Laptop, headphones, medicine, etc. Once you know your event, your location, your travel schedule, and the weather forecast of the places you will be visiting, start planning your outfits: daytime, evening wear, sleeping clothes, swimming, activities and traveling. That's a lot of outfits. Too much for a carry on. #sorrynotsorry HOW TO PLAN OUTFITS Start in your closet and think logically – from your drawers for the little things all the way up to long dresses hanging in your closet, Holly has a methodical process that works every time! Travel items: AirPods, book, jacket or wrap, sunglasses, medicines, jewelry, makeup, your computer and device chargers. Intimates: Underclothes Sleepwear Socks Shapewear Workout clothes Swim wear, coverups, hats, sunscreen Makeup, perfume, toiletries Daytime: Shorts T-shirts Jeans and pants Sweaters Bodysuits Jackets Casual shoes and accessories Evening: Dresses or evening wear Slacks and pants Jacket, wrap or coat Jewelry, evening accessories Evening shoes You CAN pack without stress, without panic buying, without over-packing AND without forgetting one single item once you learn Holly's magical trick to vacation packing. Be sure to listen to this week's episode - we can't give away all the secret sauce here! Plus, it always sounds like so much more fun coming directly from Holly! #FACTS Also: Join us, Follow us, Review us, DM us, Share us and Find us on social! Please leave us a REVIEW on Apple podcasts.
