WIth summer's arrival, tens of thousands of teenagers are itching to descend on holiday locations up and down the country. While it's no doubt a time of excitement for those young people, it's also a busy time for our emergency services and can be nerve-wracking for parents. But there is a group of people who will be out and about making sure everyone is keeping safe while they're out partying. The Red Frogs are a voluntary outfit who play a role in looking after young people in alcohol-fuelled environments. Red Frogs Central Otago and Queenstown Coordinator and spokesperson Shannon Thomson joins Mark Leishman.
Since the 1970s, young Aussies have marked the end of their schooling career by descending on beaches across the country for a week of drinking, partying and hooking up – an annual event known as schoolies or leavers. After making headlines for all the wrong reasons, police and organisers started clamping down on celebrations, especially on the Gold Coast. This year's official event has gone so far as to ban booze altogether. But even with the changes, and with Gen Z drinking less than any generation before it, many teenagers are steering away from a week of debauchery and are instead prioritising quality time with their friends at more laidback spots. So has the face of schoolies changed forever? On this extra episode of The Briefing, we're joined by the founder of Red Frogs, Andy Gourley, to dig deeper.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Continues our Series on 1 Peter: “Here for Now”. From his “Red Frogs” experience, John Batten tells how "doing good" can point people to Jesus. This sermon discusses some difficult ideas presented in Peter's letter to the exiles. Peter tells them to submit to the earthly authorities, including the Emperor, (Nero), as we submit ourselves to God. Show respect to all people. To slaves he says, "Submit to your masters, both to the considerate but also to those who are harsh". There are implications for our modern day. Christ's example is that though he did no wrong, yet he suffered for our sakes. His example is for us to follow. John urges us to choose Christ, not comfort. To follow Christ's way, not just choose comfort! Speaker: John Batten.
