"Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." Matthew 6:21 Join John and Victor in the Lenten journey on the 7 Deadly Sins this week as they discuss the sin of Greed. Our possessions, time, and talents are gifts from the Lord and how often we allow our attachments to these things to control us and rob us of our joy and living a life of freedom with the Lord. Hoard not the things of the world, but virtue, prayer, time with Him. How do we combat greed? Charity. Generosity. Seeing everything as a gift. "The greedy man is really not rich, but poor. Wouldn't it be great if we could have advance instructions from God for the day? I mean, what if God could warn us in writing, guiding us to the right way to handle stressful situations that often catch us off guard? Wouldn't that be grand? God already does this. He gives us instructions in advance, but we don't always read or heed them. Instead, we try to live the Christian life on our own terms, making up solutions as we go along. We will have greater struggles by trying to live the Christian life without the Bible. Daily Bible reading provides us with instructions for daily living. This episode provides three examples of how God gives us instructions in advance. Why keep running into trouble or making unnecessary mistakes when we have better options? God can help us learn how to do life His way. His way is perfect. "As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him." Christmas Replay This episode, "Minimizing Strife at Family Gatherings" is one of the most-replayed episodes in our podcast library. There's something about "the most wonderful time of the year" that tends to bring out the some of the least wonderful qualities in people. How can we have gatherings with loved ones who have strongly held opinions that differ from ours without things turning into a war of words? Or what about the guests with the list of special requests? And how can we host when we're worn out from so many special events? Is a peaceful gathering even possible? Yes, but we need to be prepared. This season-ending episode shares three guidelines that I quietly employ when we're having large groups of family and friends. These three suggestions are not a guarantee that you won't have any issues at your next gathering. These are just starter ideas to help you prepare for hosting with a greater chance of having a pleasant and peaceful outcome. How many of you love it when things go according to plan? Most of us do, but real life inserts some strange changes when we least expect it. In fact, that's part of our problem: we expect things to go normally all the time. Things may go way off script: The wedding wasn't supposed to be called off, but suddenly it was. The doctor appointment was supposed to be just a routine check-up, not a frightening diagnosis. The car was running fine before you packed it for a road trip. You were supposed to be holding a newborn, not recovering from a miscarriage. And how could it be that a loved one has passed away when you just saw them? You were just talking with them… Add your unplanned situation, and whether it's better or worse, the outcome was the same: your plans changed. One thing that directly affects our responses to unplanned changes is the condition of our relationship with God. If we are close to the Lord before a crisis, we will tend to accept changes without becoming foul in our spirits. How close are you to the Lord in your life? It really makes a difference in how we respond to the events that we face. What can we do when the change of plans makes life harder? This episode covers three reminders. Welcome to Teachback Tuesday, where we replay the most popular episodes from previous seasons. This episode, The Empty Chair and Other Firsts of Grief is approaching the 10,000 download mark, which tells us something we already knew: grief is an ongoing rotation in life. Some of us are in the roles of comforters, while others need comforting. When it's our turn to grieve, we experience how deeply life changes with the absence of a loved one. If this is your experience, you have an empty chair and all the changes that come with the grieving process. Many people may try to be supportive and caring, but eventually they do have to leave us and return to their own lives. When no one else is around, God will not leave us alone. He is the Comforter Who abides with us forever. Here's a verse that reminds us of this truth: "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever..." Are you in a disagreement with someone you love because you stand on opposite sides of an issue where God's Word is clear? This is becoming increasingly common. It is challenging to live biblically in an antagonistic society that questions God's existence, let alone His authority. Proverbs 29:27 reminds us that "An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked." We could probably handle the strain if the division was coming from a stranger. But when the pressure is from someone we know and love, the differences of opinion can become painfully personal and superheated. This episode is for anyone interested in walking wisely with those who are living in rebellion against God. After this episode, pause to spend time in earnest prayer for your loved ones. Imagine you've been asked to a dinner party for the small company you work for. As you're waiting for dinner to be served and people are sitting and chatting, your boss has quietly gone to the corner of the room and stripped down to his underwear and with a jug of bottled water, starts going down the line of guests and begins washing their feet.Besides being the basis for a huge lawsuit – how would something like that make you feel? Would it unnerve you? Would you protest this action? We're going to be reading John 13:1-17 this Sunday, and the events described above sort of play out in our text. Sometimes we pass this strange display off as a cultural thing, something that everyone was accustomed to – but there is no evidence that supports that assumption. Actually, just the opposite. Foot washing happened, but by and large, guests at a home would wash their own feet. Jewish servants were not even required to do this sort of humiliating and intimate thing. Only gentile slaves were known to do something like this.John sets the stage for this event by saying that Jesus had become aware that all things were in his hands…that is, he wielded the supreme authority of God. So, with that knowledge, what was the first thing Jesus did with those hands?I don't have a lot of questions to prod you with this week – just that image to ponder. If Jesus is our greatest revelation of God…who IS God as we see him on display in this section? What is this God asking of us, based on the last part of the passage? This is humbling, challenging and potentially life-altering stuff. Hope to see you this Sunday.Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.
Title: God's Redemptive Love: John 3:16-17 Introduction: [Background music fades in] Anthony Wilson (Host): Welcome back, dear listeners, to another enlightening episode of the Love Thy Nay Bor podcast. I'm your host, Anthony Wilson, and today, I want to delve deep into the theme of God's redemptive love. As we explore this profound topic, we'll be examining John 3:16-17 from the New King James Version of the Bible. Join me as we uncover the boundless depths of God's love and its transformative power. [Background music fades out] Segment 1: Setting the Stage Anthony Wilson: To truly understand God's redemptive love, we need to lay the groundwork by examining these verses. John 3:16-17 states, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved" (NKJV). Lesson 1: The Extent of God's Love Anthony Wilson: In this passage, we witness the limitless extent of God's love for humanity. It proclaims that "God so loved the world." The word "world" here refers not only to individuals but to the entirety of humanity. God's love encompasses every person, regardless of their race, nationality, background, or sins committed. It's an unconditional love that surpasses any human comprehension. God's redemptive love also includes the creation according to Romans 8:20-21 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of [a]corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. Segment 2: The Price of God's Love Anthony Wilson: Now, we ask ourselves, what did God do to demonstrate this boundless love? The verse continues, "He gave His only begotten Son." God's love is not mere sentiment or empty words; it is actionable. He sacrificed His Son, Jesus Christ, who willingly came to Earth to bear the weight of our sins, paving the way for redemption. This act shows the extent of God's devotion, proving that His love surpasses mere emotions and extends into redemptive action. Lesson 2: The Purpose of Jesus' Mission Anthony Wilson: Moving forward, we discover in verse 17 that Jesus' mission was not to condemn but to save. God didn't send His Son into the world as a judge, prepared to deal out punishment for our sins. Instead, He sent Jesus to offer salvation, to reconcile humanity with Himself. This clarifies that God desires to redeem us, to restore that broken relationship so that we may have everlasting life. Segment 3: Embracing God's Redemptive Love Anthony Wilson: Finally, we must consider the implications of this redemptive love on our lives. Believing in Jesus is the key that unlocks the door to God's redemptive plan. By faith, we can experience salvation, eternal life, and a restored relationship with our Heavenly Father. This is not something we can earn through our own efforts but is a gift freely given by God's grace through Jesus Christ. Lesson 3: Embracing God's Love in Our Lives Anthony Wilson: As we conclude today's lesson, let's reflect on the transformative power of God's redemptive love. It is through this love that we find meaning, hope, and purpose. By embracing the love of God, we discover our true identity as His beloved children and are called to share this love with others. In doing so, we participate in God's mission of redemption. [Background music fades in] Anthony Wilson (Host): Well, folks, that brings us to the end of this enlightening lesson on God's redemptive love, based on John 3:16-17. I hope you found this exploration meaningful and inspiring. As always, keep loving your neighbors and remember, love conquers all. What is true love? The question has been asked forever. Not everyone agrees. There's a startling answer found in the Bible. The prophet Hosea marries a prostitute named Gomer. She's predictably unfaithful to him, but God tells him something that's strange to us. He told Hosea to take his wife back and restore her. 1 Corinthians 13:4–5 says, "Love is patient, love is kind. It doesn't envy, it doesn't boast, it's not proud. It doesn't dishonor others, it's not self-seeking, it's not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs." How often does this world seem interested in redeeming anything? Rarely. That's why we need God to model perfect love for us, love that restores and heals. Hosea did not keep score. He only loved, and that's a picture of how God deals with us, his chief creation. We reject him, cause pain, but always he's there waiting with open arms. I think we can do at least as much for someone in our lives. Let's pray. Lord, you're a forgiving God. Thank you for loving us in our sin, in our filth. You long to restore us and we love you for that, in Jesus' name. Amen.
The Book of HOSEA-- Podcast #89 God sometimes asks his people to do ‘odd' things… occasionally ‘irrational' things… and every now and then the Lord asks a servant to doing something downright ‘weird and almost offensive'. Welcome to the Book of Hosea!! As Jeremiah was Judah's LAST CHANCE Prophet, Hosea was the LAST CHANCE PROPHET of the Northern Kingdom known as Israel. The army of the Assyrians is on the way. Israel's King and people had abandoned Jehovah God and sought out 'false lovers'. So how was the Lord to get their attention and maybe bring them to repentance: he asks the Prophet to marry a prostitute named Gomer. The book of Hosea is a story of obedience, betrayal... and a REDEMPTIVE LOVE that seeks out the 'wayward' and brings them 'home.
