Send us a textA plate of pancakes became the catalyst for a nationwide veterans support movement in this remarkable story of love, legacy, and service. After Susan Combs' father, Major General Roger Combs—who served 39 years across three military branches—developed Agent Orange-related cancer, one poignant morning changed everything. Unable to eat due to his feeding tube, he simply stated: "I want pancakes for breakfast." This heartbreaking moment eventually sparked what would become Pancakes for Roger, a nonprofit creating pathways to improve veterans' lives.Susan shares the raw emotional journey from personal grief to purposeful action. What began as a social media tribute evolved into an annual February campaign where pancake photos trigger donations supporting veterans' causes, most notably the University of Missouri Veterans Legal Clinic providing free legal services for VA claims. Their latest campaign generated an impressive $13,000 and drew participation from all 50 states and six continents.Beyond fundraising, Pancakes for Roger partners with smaller veteran organizations where modest financial support creates outsized impact. From construction projects for disabled veterans to mental health crisis support through QRF Up, these collaborations address immediate needs without bureaucratic delays. Susan's philosophy resonates throughout: "Small nonprofits can change lives with $2,000 that would barely register at a large foundation."The organization's future looks promising with weightlifting competitions dubbed "Dragon Slayer" events, community outreach initiatives, and plans to establish an endowment for veteran micro-grants. Susan's book, "Pancakes for Roger: A Mentorship Guide for Slaying Dragons," furthers her father's legacy through wisdom and life lessons while generating additional support for veterans' causes.Want to transform breakfast into meaningful change? Visit pancakesforroger.org to learn how you can host a pancake event, donate to their mission, or connect veterans with crucial resources. Together, we can ensure veterans receive the support, recognition, and community they've earned through their service.

Susan L Combs, Gen X, is the founder of Pancakes for Roger, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving those who have served our nation. She joins us today to talk about the non-profit that emerged from a humble request by Susan's father, the late Major General Roger E Combs, during his Hospice care. His simple wish for pancakes sparked a movement, which became a book and a keynote address. Now, it stands as a non-profit organization. While the pancakes themselves couldn't be served due to care constraints, the essence of his request transcended the breakfast table. It's a touching reminder to cherish life's small joys and express gratitude for them. In 2005, Susan L Combs embarked on her entrepreneurial path, founding Combs & Company at the ageof 26. Combs & Company has evolved into a trusted ally for businesses that diverge from the conventional profiles favored by insurance carriers, catering particularly to sectors like entertainment, food, and international companiesestablishing operations in the U.S. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Susan's background for her book and why she wrote her bookThe 3 facets of life.Monetary worth.Elements of a good relationship.Seeing signs.February is pancake month. Quotable Moments:“Have some pancakes for Roger and remember all the blessings in your life.”“If is helped you in your life, it'll help someone in their life, too.”“No is a complete sentence.”“My plate is as full as I like it.”“Nothing wrong withsaying no to someone to say yes to yourself.” Three Episode Takeaways: 1. There are 3 facets of life Susan's dad offered that can make an impact: The person you're with The thing you do for a living The place you liveAnd if you're happy with 3 out of 3 or 2 out of3, you're living the golden life but if you're only happy with 1 or none of those things, you're the only person that can change it. 2.   Susan encourages all of us to know our worth and when it's time to walk away. She's talking about our monetary worth per hour to help us determine your working hour. Saying no is so much easier because you know the cost.3.  At the end of the day, all women need to know they're enough. As Viola Davis said: “You need to be the love of your life.”  Episode Resources: Book, Pancakes for Roger:A Mentorship Guide for Slaying Dragons:https://www.amazon.com/Pancakes-Roger-Mentorship-Slaying-Dragons  Special Events Coming Up: Annual February pancake campaign. Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - LK 15:1-10 - The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This Man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”  So Jesus addressed this parable to them. “What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.'  I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance. “Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it? And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.'  In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Bishop Sheen quote of the day 2, 3, 4) Dr. John Woods on his book series: FACING, FIGHTING, and DEFEATING the 7 Deadly Dragons, by TAN Books

With a drive to ‘Do more, better' we discuss the three facets of life that her late father taught her: 1. The person you're with 2. The thing you do for a living and 3. The place you live. And the lessons she learned from her Midwestern upbringing to the two-plus decades in New York City. Susan reminds us that it's the little things in life that can make a huge impact.

Susan is the youngest National President of Women in Insurance & Financial Services in the over 80 year history of the organization, a “4 Under 40” by Advisor Today, and one of the “Women of Influence” by New York Business Journal.  She's also the founder of Pancakes For Roger Inc.,a not-for-profit corporation that unites veterans with opportunities to help address the unique challenges they face during and after their service…and she does that by asking folks to enjoy a simple pleasure in life…eating pancakes. Here's the backstory: Susan was extraordinarily close with her father, Major General Roger Combs, a Vietnam War veteran who was diagnosed with throat cancer due to Agent Orange exposure, and had to be put on a feeding tube. One fateful morning, Roger expressed a simple wish: he wanted to have pancakes for breakfast, but couldn't, due to his physical condition and limitations. After having a pancake breakfast with her family in her father's memory, Susan decided that she would create a movement to honor and give back to the brave men and women that serve their country.  It started with a grassroots effort. Then it became a best-selling book. Now it's a global endeavor that's making a big difference. For every pancake picture posted or tagged on social media with the hashtag #PancakesForRoger, Susan's non-profit makes a donation in Major General Combs' name  to the Veterans Clinic at the University of Missouri in his hometown. Are you prepared to confront the spiritual battleground hidden in everyday life? Join us on a journey through the unsettling expansion of the occult in today's world, as revealed in this Catholic Corner segment of the Theory to Action podcast. With insights from Charles Fraune's "Slaying Dragons Part 2," we peel back the veil on the deceptive innocence of Ouija boards, fortune-telling, and witchcraft. Exorcists and former occultists share harrowing accounts, highlighting the urgent need for the armor of faith and the intercession of Saint Michael the Archangel. Key Points from the Episode:This episode is a clarion call to recognize the spiritual warfare around us and arm ourselves with unwavering faith and the wisdom of Scripture. We also delve into the dark undercurrents of popular practices like yoga and their insidious influence on Christian values. The occult's subtle erosion of identity and morality, especially within the context of the cultural sexual revolution, is laid bare through the poignant stories of those who've escaped its grasp. Hear how embracing Christ's teachings has transformed lives, pointing towards redemption and truth. As we engage with the spiritual warfare that surrounds us, the episode reinforces the Church's irreplaceable guidance for the youth and the imperative to illuminate the path towards the light of Jesus Christ for those entangled in the shadows of the occult.Other resources: More goodnessGet your FREE Academy Review here!Get our top book recommendations listGet new podcast episodes dropped into your email box easilyWant to leave a review? Step beyond the veil with us  through the unseen battle that encircles us, a clash as real as the air we breathe. On this journey within the Catholic Corner of our Theory to Action podcast, you'll grasp the profound truths of our faith and the gripping reality of spiritual warfare. We're dissecting the rise of occult practices among the youth, as spotlighted in "Strange Rites," and diving into Charles Fraune's "Slaying Dragons" to understand the critical role of Catholic exorcists. This episode is a conversation about just that. First we begin by discussing Exorcism and what the Exorcist priest sees and the battle he fights.  We will also discuss the rise of the occult. Joining me along the way is Charles Fraune, Author of two outstanding books that discusses both these topics. “Slaying Dragons” and “Slaying Dragons II The Rise of The Occult” both books are fascinating and for me eye opening. It's not often you see a book with “pancakes” and “dragons” in the title, but this is one of the many intriguing thoughts produced by this week's guest. We interview entrepreneur, speaker, advocate, and author Susan L Combs. Yes, this week we have the opportunity to view parenthood through the eyes of an adoring daughter. In her new book inspired by her father's passing (the late Maj. Gen. Roger E. Combs.), Susan reminds us of the impact fathers and chosen mentors can have. Raised in Missouri by a two-star general of historic note, Susan talks about her book “Pancakes for Roger: A Mentorship Guide for Slaying Dragons” in which she recounts stories of her upbringing and lessons gathered, all while healing and processing the loss of her father. Pancakes, a requested meal during her father's health decline, now hold special significance and serve as a symbolic reminder to enjoy the simple things in life.
