But beyond the tabloid-fueled fame lies a far darker true story — the murder of Andre "Angel" Melendez. We explore how Michael Alig, once a self-proclaimed king of nightlife, built a celebrity persona in the early '90s underground party world alongside figures like James St. James. Fueled by fame, excess, and escalating drug use, the scene spiraled into chaos culminating in Andre "Angel" Melendez's brutal killing in 1996.Sources:Party Monster by James St. JamesGlory Daze: The Life and Times of Michael Alig https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/michael-alig-dead-club-kid-party-monster-1107737/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Melendez

"We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us." Three New York visionaries discuss the city's '90s heyday. '90s nightlife in New York conjures images of Party Monster, jacking disco house and a rotating cast of mega clubs that saw thousands of revellers pass through their doors each weekend. From Limelight and Sound Factory to Palladium and countless others, clubbing was hitting its stride in New York, while producers like Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones and Damon Wild were producing game-changing 12-inches. But it was also the beginning of a decline, catalysed by the rollout of Mayor Rudy Giuliani's discriminatory policies that slowly gutted the club scene and the communities that called it home. To honour Resident Advisor's partnership with Wire Festival in Brooklyn this weekend, we're revisiting a panel recorded at our 24/7 party at Nowadays in 2018. We tasked the beloved Brooklyn fanzine Love Injection with presenting discussions covering five decades of dance music history. In this panel, Strictly Rhythm cofounder Gladys Pizarro, DJ and producer Lenny Dee and drag superstar and vogue performer Kevin Aviance spoke with journalist (and former RA staffer) Max Pearl about the rise and fall of the city's club scene during its golden decade. They also discussed how the city was sequestered, forcing many artists at the vanguard of '90s-era techno to make music and throw their own parties as the scene grew and shifted beneath the weight of city-wide reforms. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us," said Lenny D. "So when we were doing it, we were making parties out in Brooklyn. A lot of music at that time was made here in Brooklyn—Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones, Tommy Musto, Damon Wild. So we had this scene where we're making great music, but no one's letting us play, so we're just going to do it ourselves." Listen to the episode in full.

This week on the show, we discuss the infamous case of Michael Alig, the 90's NYC club promoter known for his flamboyant pageantry and prankish antics that eventually murdered one of his friends, chopped them up in a bathtub and dumbed them in the Hudson River. Not only that, but it all quickly escalated into a full-on media circus as police failed to investigate, rumors ran rampant in the clubs and newspapers, and Alig himself joked about murdering Angel Melendez in public and in interviews. And this was all while Alig was hanging out with legendary icons like Ru Paul, and other zany characters like "James St. James", "Jenny Talia", and "Waltpaper". As grisly and flashy as this case simultaneously was, it's little wonder it was turned into a movie released in 2003 entitled "Party Monster", starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green (and receiving pretty bad reviews overall.) Dressing up in a punkish, sometimes-androgynous aesthetic in the vein of David Bowie, Boy George, Lady Gaga, or the aforementioned Ru Paul, this brash and artistic youth movement of the "Club Kids" began as a jabby satire of the club scene that artist Andy Warhol had produced, but quickly became its own cliche. What began as a vibrant and mostly-positive NYC club scene of alt-kids -- self-proclaimed "Freaks" that were minorities of all kinds (particularly of the LGBTQ+ variety) -- that weren't even doing drugs, eventually descended into an absolute drug-fueled rampage-of-sorts through the NY club scene that led to murder, hubris, blood-soaked club parties, lots of drugs, and a whole lot of regret for a lot of people. This story is absolutely bonkers on every level: to the incubation of a unique sub-culture, to the mind of a deeply flawed and troubled misfit murderer, the circus-like club antics, the proto-LGBTQ+ history, and the absolute abject failure of the NYPD to bring proper justice to the situation in due time. "Well, congratulations on getting out of the very dangerous world of haberdashery!" It's a Disco Bloodbath on the pod this week as we double featured both Party Monster movies with our friend Jesse Krempel host of the podcast Cult Cinema Circle. The documentary, or shall we say "Shockumentary" from 1998, and the 2003 film starring Macaulay Culkin, Seth Green, Chloë  Sevigny, Wilmer Valderrama, and Dylan McDermott. Michael Alig's saga of the murder in clubland always fascinated us as young gays, and spoiler alert, at least one of the two entries holds up in its revisit. Long before World of Wonder took over the queer landscape with RuPaul's Drag Race, they made a documentary that looked at the events surrounding the murder of Andre "Angel" Melendez by club promoter and all around sh*t head Micahel Alig, with the help of Robert "Freeze" Riggs that landed them both in prison for 15 years. Former child actor superstar Mac Culkin came out of his 9 year retirement to play Alig in the 2003 indie dramatization of the events. With Seth Green playing the larger than life "celebutante" James St. James, Party Monster felt like event-queer-cinema in the early '00s when represention of gay characters in film was scarse. We reflect on how suprisingly poor the 2003 theatrical version revisits. The casting of Mac and Seth (two cis hetro men) aside, did we just overlook all its flaws when first watching because we were excited for this story being told in a major movie? Topics discussed include the colorful characters chronicled in the Shockumentary, the club kids taking over '90s daytime TV, and did 2000s indie darling Chloë  Sevigny have better things she could have been doing than this thankless role? For better or for worse both Party Monsters are a unique snapshot of the club kid era of time gone by.  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

In addition to diving into the film, your favorite co-hosts also discuss their own deeply personal relationships to the film.

In this episode we are joined by Frankie Morello. Frankie recently completed 100 days sober after an extensive run being in her own words, a "little party monster". She shares facing adversity from her peers to decide to stop drinking, being presented with anxiety and discomfort entering the social arena without being able to reach for some liquid courage. In her time away from drinking, she was able to reevaluate her relationship with alcohol through a sober lens. She used this time to explore herself doing inner work with using tools like meditation and morning affirmations. She shares on becoming more open to having deeper conversations, with a little push from her best friend, going beyond the surface level chats she was once only capable and comfortable with. We thank Frankie for coming on the podcast, we hope those in early days of exploring their relationship with alcohol will be able to relate to her story. In this ep we reminisce, and talk about his amazing podcast Night Fever, fame obsession, and the future of creativity and art. Follow me: @peterbreezeSubscribe on SubstackThe Superficial Spirit is a podcast that explores how pop culture affects our spiritual experiences and seeks to uncover unconventional ways people experience the divine… Every episode explores a different area of spirituality including tarot, crystals, psychics, manifesting, plant medicine and modern new-age trends. In the podcast, we ask questions like is modern spirituality a cult? Is Ayahuasca really that profound? Are psychics and tarot even real? What about fame, money, sex and social media? How do they affect our spirituality? Can the superficial really be profound? Ultimately, we believe in one thing: spirituality is real but the tools we use to define it may not be magical at all.The Superficial Spirit is hosted by Peter Breeze, a former club kid and underground pop star who found success in queer clubs across Canada and America. He believes that his time as a fame-obsessed, hard-partying club-kid was a conduit for his spirituality and is passionate to connect with people who've also had unconventional or scandalous experiences exploring their own spirituality. Peter shamelessly explores the spiritual power of celebrities like Britney Spears, Courtney Love, Paris Hilton and The Real Housewives.Guests include RuPaul's Drag Race Superstars, Reality TV stars, Scientists, witches, psychics, tarot readers, naturopathic doctors and regular people who've been affected by modern Spirituality.Every episode includes a segment with @jessica.daily, Peter's Spiritual correspondent and a former reiki master and intuitive who's become passionate about sharing her own journey becoming disillusioned from the new age community. Michael Alig, or you may know him better as Party Monster, was crowned king of the Club Kids back in the late 80's/early 90's. You may have heard of the club kids, some famous examples today are Bjork, Amanda Lepore, and Ru Paul. They ruled the streets of Manhattan when the streetlights came on and partied the night away. Michael would throw these elaborate parties with crazy performers, wild themes and loads of drugs but it wouldn't take long for the Club Kid scene to come crashing down to the ground. By the end two club kids would become murderers and one of their own, Angel Melendez would be the one killed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Michael Alig was an American club promoter and convicted felon. He was the self proclaimed "King of the Club Kids," a group of young New York City clubgoers who became a cultural phenomenon in the late 1980s and early 1990s through their flamboyant costumes and their excessive use of party drugs. In March 1996, Alig and his roommate, Robert D. "Freeze" Riggs, killed fellow Club Kid Andre "Angel" Melendez in a confrontation over amongst other things, a delinquent drug debt. The pair then dismembered the body and disposed of Melendez's remains in the Hudson River, where they were later discovered by children playing on a beach in Staten Island.  A very special thank you to Levi for supporting our show as our highest tier patron!
