Bina Gehres, Director, received her master's in education from Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD in 1972. She was a teacher of the deaf in Dayton, Ohio and after moving to Rhode Island, taught at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf for three years. Bina then went into the healthcare field in Rhode Island in 1979 and became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), where she worked in nursing homes, private duty healthcare agencies and doing home care etc. for 35 years. In 2007 she co-founded with composer and poet, Noreen Inglesi, a non-profit organization, Notable Works Publication and Distribution Co., Inc., which is dedicated to raising community awareness through the arts for environmental and social issues. Since 2004 to the present time (2024) and at the age of 75, Bina has been instrumental in organizing 3 - 5 original musical and poetic events a year in libraries, churches and open spaces specifically following the Notable Works mission concerning homelessness, domestic violence and especially the recent variances in our Earth's climate. Also, most recently Bina has collaborated with three others on a new musical called Sell Division: A Musical in Two Acts About Breaking the Chains of Perception which will be presented in the form of a live stage reading at the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick, Rhode Island towards the end of 2024. Noreen Inglesi, co-founder and Artist in Residence for Notable Works, taught music for the Town of North Providence and the Community College of Rhode Island. Noreen was twice nominated for Teacher of the Year and received her Associates of Fine Arts Degree at the Community College of Rhode Island and her undergraduate and master's degree in music education and composition at the University of Rhode Island. She's received much recognition for her music and poetry which has been featured both nationally and internationally by the Insight Quartet in Italy, the Dallas Songwriter's Association, the Contemporary Record Society, The Music Educators' National Conference, the Culver Music Series in California and on the Women of Substance Music Podcast. Locally, Noreen's music has been featured by The American Band, The Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island, The State Ballet of Rhode Island, The Colonial Theatre, Verdant Vibes, Vibe of the Venue, the Westerly Band and WaterFire Providence. Noreen is also proud to be a member of Ocean State Poets and her poetry has been published by Crosswinds Poetry Journal, Nobel House, the National Library of Poetry, Rhode Island Bards, Frequency Writers, The Poetry Loft and Notable Works Publication. Her music has been recorded and released with the Contemporary Record Society, Andreu Marc Publications, The Music Library, Platinum Records and Notable Works Publication and Distribution Co., Inc. And just recently, Noreen wrote the musical “Sell Division” with three of her colleagues. Marianne Quinn, B.A, has been not only an author on this project but has served as a consultant regarding social issues and the prison system. Her experience with diverse cultures has informed the content of the musical, lending validity to the characters. She is a retired social worker of 25 years from the State of Rhode Island. Mary Zema is a career vocalist, singer/songwriter and guitarist. She began playing guitar at the age of seven and singing and writing songs at age ten. A native of Warwick, RI, Mary has played throughout New England. Her style is eclectic, pop, rock, ballads, electronic, etc. Her debut release, co-produced by Richard Bone, “Songs of Early Paradise” was in the top twenty on DMX radio New York. Mary recently released my second album “Whistles, Dimes and Dragonflies” and a video of the same name. She taught music in the Fall River Public School system for 33 years. She is presently performing with her band, “Throwback,” playing music from the 60s -90s.
Welcome back to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. This week, I have some new recommendations, featuring a selection of neo-noir classics from the '70s and early '80s. These films capture the essence of the genre with their complex characters, intricate plots, and moody atmospheres. I grew up as a fan of original noir films that I would see on TV late shows and weekend film fests. So as I got older, my enjoyment of these made a lot of sense.First up is The Long Goodbye (1973), directed by Robert Altman. This film features Elliott Gould as Philip Marlowe, a laid-back private detective navigating a world of mystery and betrayal in contemporary Los Angeles. Altman's unique take on Raymond Chandler's classic character adds a touch of humor and irreverence to the story. Pay attention to the film's soundtrack by John Williams, which cleverly reprises the same theme in various styles throughout the movie.Next, we have Chinatown (1974), directed by Roman Polanski. This film stars Jack Nicholson as private investigator Jake Gittes, who gets entangled in a web of corruption and deceit in 1930s Los Angeles. Faye Dunaway and John Huston deliver unforgettable performances. Keep an eye out for the film's meticulous attention to detail, from its period-accurate costumes to its stunning cinematography by John A. Alonzo. This might be the most famous film that has a nose-slashing in it.Moving on, I am recommending Night Moves (1975), directed by Arthur Penn. Gene Hackman stars as Harry Moseby, a former football player turned private investigator. As he searches for a runaway teenager, Moseby finds himself caught in a dark and twisted conspiracy. Hackman's performance, as you might expect, is a standout, and the film's ambiguous ending will leave you pondering long after the credits roll (Seventies!) Keep an eye out for a young Melanie Griffith in one of her earliest roles.Lastly, we have Cutter's Way (1981), directed by Ivan Passer. This film features Jeff Bridges as Richard Bone, who becomes involved in a murder investigation with his friend Alex Cutter, played by John Heard. The film paints a sad/confusing picture of post-Vietnam America and explores themes of disillusionment and betrayal. The chemistry between Bridges and Heard is electric, and Lisa Eichhorn delivers a heartbreaking performance as Cutter's wife, Mo.These films are essential viewing for any fan of the noir genre or films of the seventies. While they have a lot in common, they each also bring something unique to the table and showcase some of the best talent of their time, both in front of and behind the camera. Richard Bone sees a murder but really wishes he didn't. His buddy Alex Cutter can't wait to go after the oil tycoon who probably did it. And A.I. made us check our millennial attention spans at the door to watch and appreciate this slow, methodical post-Vietnam allegory! Then, very special guest Julian Modugno gets trapped with us to figure out next week's outrageous movie choice! And A.I. is stuck in character and taking its martinis very dry.
Chalk it up to the German genius for music and technology, but technical innovations from the late 1960s and early 1970s like the "sequencer" (an early manual method of creating repeating rhythm patterns) have not only remained relevant — they've become an essential part of the language of electronic music. At the same time, the fierce, extended winters of Northern Europe created a context that favored clear, bright tones and vast, subzero atmospheres. It led to what came to be called "kosmische musik" or cosmic music. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another wintry journey on electronic waves, on a program called WINTERTRONIC 3. Music is by S1GNS OF L1FE, MICHAEL WHALEN, RICHARD BONE, HOLLAN HOLMES, LOSCIL, KEVIN KELLER, and LIQUID MIND. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]
In the early 1970s, English guitarist ROBERT FRIPP (of the seminal progressive rock band KING CRIMSON) began a series of experiments with tape delay echo loops that he came to call "Frippertronics." Fripp's collaboration with fellow electronic experimentalist BRIAN ENO yielded two influential albums of treated electric guitar and synthesizers. NO PUSSYFOOTING (from 1972) and EVENING STAR (in 1974) defined a new sound: the infinite spatial guitar. Whether endlessly looped or indefinitely sustained, Fripp transformed, expanded and dematerialized the electric guitar by feeding it back on itself — and created one of the foundations of today's ambient soundscapes. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE we borrow a term from computer programming, on a descending journey for fall called INFINITE LOOPS. Music is by HAROLD BUDD & CLIVE WRIGHT, ROBIN GUTHRIE, HAMMOCK, and RICHARD BONE. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

Of all the artists that have been featured on Hearts of Space, due to his wide influence, theoretical brilliance, and tireless innovation — no one has earned a celebratory retrospective more than JON HASSELL. An avant-garde composer and inventor of "Fourth World" music, he described it as "a unified primitive/futuristic sound combining features of world ethnic styles with advanced electronic techniques." Jon Hassell died this week at the age of 84. We'll work on that retrospective, but for now we'll use one of his classics to introduce a program of the kind of globe-trotting, culture-hopping, creative ambient he inspired. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a program called PARALLEL WORLDS. Music is by JON HASSELL, TRANCE MISSION, GREEN ISAC ORCHESTRA, RICHARD BONE, DARSHAN AMBIENT, DANIEL LANOIS & ROCCO DELUCA, ALEX HAAS, and FORREST FANG. A classic piece of electronic spacemusic from France by JEAN-MICHEL JARRE. With just a few notes, it creates a whole world of mystery and imagination. Slow, deep, romantic and sublime, it invites us into a place that's unknown and unpredictable, yet alluring. It's true that all good music takes you away, but since the 1970s artists have been using electronic tools to craft a sound that takes you to places far beyond the reach of ordinary music. Dark ambient electronics have become a vehicle...for transport to deep virtual worlds and exotic environments. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a journey on the dark ambient spaceways, on a program called MYSTERIOSO. Music is by JEAN MICHEL JARRE, A PRODUCE & LOREN NERELL, PAUL ELLIS, MEG BOWLES, RICHARD BONE, ERIK WOLLO, KIT WATKINS, and ANDREW LAHIFF. In the warm, bright days of summer, an ambient fan yearning for travel to exotic cultures will book a flight on Sequencer Airlines. With its steady pulse, it's a perfect rhythm for moving through space. The roots go back to 9th century Persia, but the music sequencer idea really got going in the 19th century after the Industrial Revolution, with popular devices like music boxes, mechanical organs, and player pianos. By the first generation of electronic synthesizers in the 1960s and 70s, the Step Sequencer was a machine that turned equal length notes into repeating rhythm patterns. They're simple, delightfully hypnotic, and fun to work with. Today things are more complicated, but a lot more powerful. We have audio sample sequencers, loop-based creative music software, phrase samplers, and digital audio recording software many times more powerful than the primitive sequencers of early synths—and hey! They're still fun to work with. On this transmission of Hearts of Space...a journey from kinetic sequencer patterns to exotic Southeast Asian ambient soundscapes—on a program called AMBIENT TRAVELER 2. Music by ATOMIC SKUNK, DAVID PARSONS, CHRISTEL VERAART, CHRONOTOPE PROJECT, LOREN NERELL, ALIO DIE & LORENZO MONTANA, RICHARD BONE.
