Mare Island Mare Island used to support the town of Vallejo, which fell on hard times after the base closure. The city has supported a lot of reinvestment and development of new businesses including the brewery. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Episode 5: We hand the mic to our Tour de France diarists again to get inside the race bubble. In this episode of The Cycling Podcast from the Tour de France, we recap a seventh stage that had everything. There was an aggressive pace set by Bora-Hansgrohe to drop all the sprinters at the start of the stage, then crosswinds caused havoc at the end of the stage. The quietest day in modern Tour de France history had an unexpected twist in the tail and Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau were on hand to discuss the stage. It was expected to be a sprint but it was surprising that there was no breakaway all day. Anyone in the music scene in and around Indianapolis know the name Ben Cannon and are aware of the many great things he’s already accomplished. I'm hard-pressed to find another booking/promotions outfit that has done as much for the local music as those boys from Shine.  People like Ben Cannon are those rare individuals who think about local music and what they can do to make it better practically 24/7.  Their continuing efforts show an on-gong dedication to quality and putting the artist and the music first and foremost.  These are the people who slap their name on event and then not even show up, figuring that the mere fact that they acknowledged you elevates your standing and their indie credibility.  Shine is first and foremost a team, and you can rest assured, they will do everything they can to make sure you succeed. Surviving in the fickle realm of the local music scene is pretty tricky.  Expanding yourself year after year with more frequent offerings and entirely new services is very impressive.  The fact that they can do this for multiple years now without anybody having a bad thing to say about their experience working with them is an unprecedented and monumental feat. Ryan Gibbons, familiar to many of you as the producer/writer/musician behind such bands as Thursday Book Club, Black Market Binary, and Half-Life ... as well as his own solo work.  By adding Ryan's undisputed talents to the Shine arsenal, Ben Cannon has upped the ante on what Shine can do for an artist by adding a high-quality, physical product to supplement the magic of the live performance.  For today's show, Ryan brings us six (technically, seven) tracks that he has had a hand in and that showcase the breadth of incredible artistry from our local scene that Shine has partnered with. Not sure what it is about winters, but it seems like the local music scene appears to go into hibernation between October and February around here, at least as far as the bigger, more popular acts go.  Normally, I would use this time to take a nice holiday break, maybe catch up on some old editing of live shows, network with bands and arrange some guests for Spring.  With any luck, I get a chance to hit a few coffee shops (perfect with the cold weather) and hunt down some new singer/songwriter talent, those guys seem to work all year 'round.  This year, however, it seems there are fewer and fewer new entrants into that circle.  Maybe I met all off them courtesy of the myriad Shine series from the last couple of years, I really don't know.  Complicating this is the fact that the rapid loss of live music venues that has plagued us for the last three years has now has extended to the coffee houses with many, such as Hearthstone, closing due to extensive competition, and others simply giving up on live music altogether to avoid the increasing presence of ASCAP fees and fines every time a performer slips in the occasional cover tune during their set of originals. One new find for me this year has been Ms. Emily Myren, an up-and-coming, very in demand player who has given us no shortage of opportunities to see her perform in the second half of 2014.  Bringing a new style and voice to the singer/songwriter scene, Emily has quickly become an in-demand favorite at most of our usual haunts, from the Shine series to Sabbatical to the newly added front room at the Alley Cat to a stellar appearance in the final round of Birdy's One Guitar competition.  Now for the first time we get her on Indy In-Tune to play a few tracks from her new CD, Found, and to give us the story behind the songs and the songwriter. Obviously I pretty much live for new music, especially live music, and most especially live music from people I know on a personal level. I say "obviously" since why else would anybody do this for almost seven years? This week's guest, Black Market Binary, holds special significance for me since, indirectly, it turns out Indy In-Tune is partially responsible for the genesis of the band.  Angela Jackson, a drinking buddy of mine and regular performer at one of my favorite open mic nights, heard local band Thursday Book Club on Indy In-Tune Radio, and when she saw them play live, used this as an "in" to strike up a conversation with one of their principal songwriters and producers, Ryan Gibbons.  A few weeks later, when that band went its separate ways, Ryan and Angela began a collaboration that was in a slightly different direction for both of them, but led to a great first set of tracks and put them well on their way to putting out their first full-length album. While it's equally exciting to get a new band in to Studio B to do their first interview, it also makes for a rather free form conversation, since you can't really fill an hour with stories from a band that has only been together for a few weeks and has never played a live gig ... there just aren't a lot of stories to be told.  Combine that with the fact that Angela and I sort of devolve into giggling teenagers after a couple of beers, and next thing you know I owe Ryan a huge apology for completely trampling on half of the really cool, insightful things he had to say.  Still we got some really cool insights into their process, a great feel for the dynamic personalities at work in this band, and best of all, an exclusive live-in -studio version of "On the Horizon" to add to our "Monday Night Live" collection ...
