Il 10 agosto, giorno in cui la Chiesa cattolica ricorda san Lorenzo, è una delle grandi feste dell'antica Roma cristiana. Dom Guéranger nel suo L'Année liturgique, ricorda le parole con cui sant'Agostino celebrava questo giorno «veramente trionfale, in cui san Lorenzo schiacciò il mondo fremebondo». Roma intera, aggiungeva il vescovo di Ippona, era testimone della «gloriosa e immensa moltitudine di virtù» che formavano la corona del martire. Pochi santi hanno avuto nella storia della Chiesa un culto così antico e universale. Già nell'Alto Medioevo, il 10 agosto, a Roma si celebravano due Messe in suo onore: una sulla tomba del martire e un'altra, più solenne, nella basilica di San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, fatta edificare da Costantino. Un'iscrizione di papa san Damaso, composta circa un secolo dopo il martirio, proclamava: «Sferze, ugne, fiamme, tormenti, catene, solo la fede di Lorenzo ha potuto vincerle».Lorenzo era uno dei sette diaconi della Chiesa romana al tempo di papa Sisto II. Il diacono non era allora soltanto ministro dell'altare. Assisteva il Pontefice e partecipava all'amministrazione dei beni temporali della Chiesa, destinati in larga misura al sostentamento dei poveri. Era dunque una figura eminente della comunità cristiana.

Fu un'epoca di defezione della fede in cui spiccarono figure di strenui difensori dell'ortodossia come sant'Atanasio di Alessandria e sant'Ilario di Poitiers. Sant'Atanasio, in particolare, è divenuto il simbolo della lotta contro l'arianesimo, penetrato fino ai vertici delle gerarchie ecclesiastiche. Nella attuale discussione sulle consacrazioni episcopali senza mandato pontificio, il nome di sant'Atanasio viene talvolta evocato come esempio di un vescovo che avrebbe consacrato nuovi vescovi al di fuori delle ordinarie norme disciplinari. Un esame rigoroso delle fonti storiche conduce tuttavia a conclusioni assai diverse. Per comprendere correttamente l'attività di Atanasio occorre anzitutto richiamare il quadro canonico del IV secolo. Nei primi secoli non esisteva la procedura giuridica di un mandato pontificio necessario per ogni consacrazione episcopale. Esisteva tuttavia una prassi consolidata, che il primo Concilio di Nicea codificò al canone 4. Questa prassi stabiliva che ogni nuovo vescovo dovesse essere consacrato da tutti i vescovi della provincia ecclesiastica o, qualora ciò non fosse possibile, almeno da tre vescovi, con la conferma finale del metropolita, che era il vescovo principale di una provincia ecclesiastica. Il metropolita possedeva una giurisdizione ordinaria sulla propria provincia. Il Papa esercitava invece un primato universale sulla Chiesa.  Atanasio divenuto vescovo della sede metropolitana di Alessandria l'8 giugno 328, aveva la responsabilità di una delle più vaste circoscrizioni ecclesiastiche dell'Oriente cristiano. Il canone 6 di Nicea stabiliva infatti: «L'antica consuetudine vigente in Egitto, Libia e Pentapoli rimanga in vigore, così che il vescovo di Alessandria abbia autorità su tutte queste regioni».L'OPPOSIZIONE ARIANA ALLA NOMINA DI ATANASIOL'opposizione ariana alla nomina di Atanasio si manifestò immediatamente. Il sinodo di Tiro del 335 depose irregolarmente Atanasio, mentre l'imperatore Costantino ne decretava il primo esilio a Treviri. La conseguenza di tali vicende fu la continua alternanza, nelle diocesi egiziane, di vescovi fedeli a Nicea e di candidati sostenuti dal partito eusebiano. L'attività di sant'Atanasio non si limitò alla difesa dottrinale del simbolo niceno, ma comportò anche un'intensa opera di ricostruzione della gerarchia ecclesiastica nelle province soggette alla sua giurisdizione. Dopo ogni ritorno dall'esilio, il vescovo di Alessandria trovava infatti numerose sedi occupate da vescovi filoariani insediati con l'appoggio dell'autorità imperiale. Il suo primo compito fu quello di deporli e sostituirli con pastori fedeli alla professione di Nicea. Lo studio fondamentale di Annick Martin ha ricostruito con precisione questa attività, dimostrando che le nomine operate da Atanasio riguardavano sedi appartenenti all'Egitto, alla Libia o alla Pentapoli, cioè territori sottoposti alla sua giurisdizione canonica (Athanase d'Alexandrie et l'Église d'Égypte au IVe siècle (328-373), École française de Rome, Rome 1996). Un'analoga conclusione emerge dalla ricostruzione del prof. Manlio Simonetti. Analizzando il ritorno di Atanasio nel 346 e quello definitivo del 362, Simonetti sottolinea come il patriarca procedesse alla restaurazione della gerarchia nicena nelle Chiese egiziane senza mai oltrepassare l'ambito della propria competenza ecclesiastica (La crisi ariana nel IV secolo, Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum, Roma 1975.) L'attività di Atanasio era assolutamente conforme alla disciplina giuridica dell'epoca, perché costituiva il naturale esercizio dell'autorità metropolitana di Alessandria. Le numerose ordinazioni episcopali attribuite ad Atanasio non furono mai considerate abusive dalla Chiesa del suo tempo, proprio perché avvenivano all'interno del territorio soggetto alla sua competenza canonica.Le consacrazioni compiute dal patriarca di Alessandria avvennero in circostanze eccezionali, ma non furono mai effettuate contro il Papa o in opposizione alla Santa Sede. Anzi, il riconoscimento romano costituì uno degli elementi essenziali della azione pastorale di Atanasio. Durante tutta la crisi ariana il vescovo di Alessandria cercò costantemente il sostegno dei Pontefici romani e ne riconobbe l'autorità.ATANASIO A ROMADopo la deposizione decretata dai sinodi orientali, Atanasio si recò a Roma, dove fu accolto da papa san Giulio I. Il sinodo romano del 341 dichiarò invalide le accuse formulate contro il patriarca alessandrino e ne riconobbe pienamente la legittimità. Nella celebre lettera indirizzata ai vescovi orientali, Giulio rimproverava loro di aver proceduto senza consultare la Chiesa romana, ricordando che le questioni di tale importanza dovevano essere sottoposte al giudizio della Sede apostolica.Negli anni successivi Atanasio mantenne rapporti costanti anche con papa Liberio. La temporanea debolezza mostrata da quest'ultimo durante l'esilio non modificò mai l'atteggiamento del patriarca egiziano, che continuò a considerare Roma come il centro della comunione ecclesiale. Ancora più stretta fu poi la collaborazione con papa san Damaso, il quale sostenne pienamente il ristabilimento dell'ortodossia nicena e confermò il prestigio della sede alessandrina.Il cardinale John Henry Newman nel suo libro su Gli Ariani del IV secolo (tr. it. Jaca Book, Milano 1981), ha ben chiarito il significato ecclesiologico della vicenda. Atanasio resistette agli imperatori, ai concili filoariani e alle pressioni politiche, ma non si oppose mai al principio del primato romano. La sua lotta era rivolta contro i vescovi eterodossi e contro l'interferenza del potere civile, non contro la costituzione gerarchica della Chiesa. Tutta la sua azione pastorale appare costantemente inserita nell'esercizio della legittima giurisdizione della sede alessandrina e nella ricerca della comunione con la Sede romana.Le consacrazioni episcopali promosse da Atanasio rappresentavano un atto ordinario di governo ecclesiastico, reso straordinario soltanto dalle condizioni eccezionali create dall'intervento dell'autorità imperiale nelle controversie dottrinali. Atanasio era il legittimo patriarca di Alessandria; le sue consacrazioni avvenivano nell'ambito della sua giurisdizione patriarcale; egli cercò costantemente il sostegno dei Romani Pontefici. Per questo l''esempio di sant'Atanasio rimane uno dei più alti modelli di fedeltà alla Tradizione nei momenti di crisi ecclesiale e non può essere in alcun modo invocato come esempio di disobbedienza alla autorità del Sommo Pontefice, senza contraddire la verità dei fatti e cadere così nella condanna della storia.

Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) represents the most advanced stage of peripheral artery disease. While many patients can be treated with endovascular or surgical revascularization, a subset of individuals remain ‘no-option' candidates when conventional therapies fail or distal targets are absent. Mark Anthony "Gator" Rogowski is an American former professional skateboarder who was convicted of murder. He was mainly prominent in the 1980s and early 1990s. Rogowski's career ended when he pled guilty for assaulting, raping, and murdering Jessica Bergsten in 1991. His life was chronicled in a critically acclaimed 2003 documentary titled Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator by American filmmaker Helen SticklerAugie Costantino was thespiritual advisor and mentor to professional skateboarder Mark "Gator" Rogowski during Rogowski's transition into born-again Christianity in the late 1980s. Spiritual Guidance: Costantino, an ex-surfer turned "skateboard minister," befriended Rogowski after the skater suffered a severe injury in Germany. Chef Dylan Costantino has prepared meals in kitchens from Colorado to Mackinac Island to Nashville. Here in Northwest Tennessee, we're lucky he's now calling Paris home.
