A 2023 report by International Data Corporation (IDC) found that an astonishing 96% of CIOs in South Africa plan to modernise their ERP applications using cloud services. Yet actual implementation has stalled. To discuss this, and what's holding South African organisations back from cloud modernisation projects, TechCentral was joined on the TCS+ business technology show by executives from NTT Data (formerly Dimension Data) and SAP: NTT Data Middle East and Africa head of enterprise applications and cloud Brent Flint and SAP Africa head of partner ecosystem (MEA South) Nazia Pillay. Reasons for slow uptake, Flint and Pillay explained, include a perception that the costs involved are exceptionally high and the dire shortage of the right IT skills to handle these types of projects. In this episode of TCS+, Pillay and Flint unpack: • The history of the relationship between SAP and NTT Data and how the two companies work together today; • Why there is a pressing need for companies to modernise their ERP systems and move to cloud-based solutions; • The benefits of and costs associated with moving to SAP S4/HANA Cloud – what the software offers that legacy ERP systems can't, and the benefits organisations can expect when migrating; • How best to deal with the critical IT skills shortage in South Africa, especially around these types of business application modernisation projects; • The risks associated with business application modernisation and how NTT Data and SAP help their clients address those risks upfront and during project implementation; • The role SAP S/4 HANA Cloud can play in modernising enterprise IT infrastructure and help organisations stay competitive; • The best practices companies should be aware of in achieving a successful migration to S4/HANA Cloud; and • What's coming next from S4/HANA Cloud that companies should get excited about. Well-known investor and businessman Duarte da Silva joins TCS Legends to discuss Jeremy Ord, Roux Marnitz, Alan Knott-Craig, Jens Montanana and Bill Venter. -- Well-known investor and businessman Duarte da Silva is the guest in the inaugural episode of TechCentral's TCS Legends, a new video podcast series focused on legendary figures who helped shape South Africa's technology industry. A two-part scene setter for the rest of the limited series, Da Silva – who knows many of the individuals who built businesses in the country's tech space after 1994 – shares his insights into the (often colourful) characters who helped define the country's ICT sector into what it is today. TCS Legends, which is powered by Mitel, has a great line-up of guests secured over the coming months. But in episode 1 – the first of a double header with Da Silva – we delve into the people, the deals and sometimes the scandal that helped define an industry. Da Silva, an avid investor who serves on a number of company boards, is a former director of Merrill Lynch – where his hefty analyst reports on JSE-listed tech companies in the 1990s had company CEOs lapping up his insights, and more than a little fearful about what he might write about them. He also founded Macquarie First South, among other enterprising ventures, and possesses encyclopaedic knowledge of business in South Africa. A legend in his own right, Da Silva shares often-amusing tales of deals (some of which went horribly wrong), corporate shenanigans and plenty more besides with TCS Legends. In the show, he chats about many people and companies, but the primary focus is on five individuals: • Jeremy Ord at Dimension Data (now NTT Data) • Roux Marnitz at Persetel (now BCX) • Bill Venter at Altron • Jens Montanana at Datatec • Alan Knott-Craig at Vodacom The show is hosted by TechCentral editor Duncan McLeod, who said of the interview with Da Silva: “If you are, or have ever been, involved in South Africa's IT industry, this is one show you simply do not want to miss!” Part 2 of the interview with Da Silva will be published on Monday, 4 March 2024. Big changes are coming to the way companies build and manage their network infrastructure. This is a key discussion point in the latest episode of TechCentral's TCS+ technology show, featuring subject matter experts from Dimension Data – soon to be NTT Data – and Cisco. NTT's 2022/2023 Global Network Report found that 70% of CEOs surveyed indicated that a lack of network maturity was negatively impacting business delivery. But what's the solution? To unpack that question in some detail, TCS+ spoke to four experts in the field: • Prashil Gareeb, vice president of MNCS, Dimension Data; • Paul Mende, director of managed networking product management, Dimension Data; • Adesh Baboolal, acting client partner director: managed services, NTT South Africa; and • Aadil Hassim, sales specialist for enterprise networking and software, Cisco South Africa. Gareeb kicks off the discussion on the brand changes taking place at Dimension Data – including the renaming of the company – and what they mean for the business and its clients. He also unpacks the longstanding relationship between both Cisco and Dimension Data and Cisco and the NTT Group. The panellists then unpack: • Why many companies have failed to pay sufficient attention to networking. Why is it important to get networking right in the modern cloud era? And what role does this play in digital transformation initiatives? • The advances in wireless networking compared to traditional cabled networks; • How Dimension Data – soon, NTT Data – can help companies with their network modernisation efforts, including a look at what Dimension Data offers the market in terms of managed network services through the NTT Spektra solution; • The relationship the Cisco and how the organisations are working together to solve customers' problems; • The advantages – and potential pitfalls – of a network modernisation project, including a look the security considerations; and • The benefits of outsourcing network management. The COVID pandemic required a rapid restructuring of corporate and business networks to include mobile and remote work-from-home network access. That 2-year network nightmare also highlighted the security holes accelerating a need for networking and security personnel to address the problems. Jacob Hess Don Witt, of The Channel Daily News, speaks with Jacob Hess, Chief Academic Officer, and Co-founder of NGT Academy, about their training programs. Jacob points out that both co-founders served in the Air Force teaching servicemen what they needed to know to be network and cyber security engineers.  They have implemented  the same style of training at NGT. For example, their Skills Qualifications Checks process proactively implements a verification procedure for the specific skills on the list.  The list was created from those known activities that are required to perform certain functions in their chosen NGT program. Jacob goes on to enthusiastically outline their new training program. If you are a carrier or enterprise, NGT can update and provide current information to your staff.  If you were in the military or not, NGT can prepare you for a new HIGH PAYING career. Listen in to Jacob and then give him a call to find out how you can hire his graduates! About: NGT Academy was founded by two Air Force veterans who have trained thousands of engineers for the military. They have combined the military-style training philosophy of job readiness with decades of network engineering and cyber security experience working at Cisco Systems, Arista Networks, and Dimension Data into an immersive program to get people into cyber security or networking careers faster and more effectively than ever! They believe they have the best program to equip anyone to be cyber security specialists in the fastest way possible. They believe in having a strong foundation in network architecture before students go into their cyber security training. Once the student masters the fundamentals in networking, they are better prepared to step into the NGT Academy cyber security training program along with real-world projects. The dream slowly became reality as Ryder banged on the door of the sport with only his vision and passion to sell. I'm your host, Nick Walker, and here along with Bill Yates.  We're going to be talking about, among other things, a project that brought together some of the greatest minds in technology to save a species. BILL YATES:  Yeah, this is so fascinating to me, Nick, because Doc is going to talk to us about wedding technology with a really serious issue, a very serious passion point for him.  And to hear him explain it, this is going to be great. Meet Doc NICK WALKER:  Well, let's meet our guest.  He's Doc Watson.  For 32 years he's been part of Dimension Data, a South African tech company.  Between 1998 and 2002 he was on the company's board of directors and was responsible for developing the group's global networking services operations, and all operations in the U.K. and Europe.  In 2015 he launched a groundbreaking project called Connected Conservation, which uses technology to help eradicate the poaching of endangered species.  Doc Watson, welcome to Manage This. DOC WATSON:  Thank you very much indeed.  Thank you. Rhino Poaching Problem NICK WALKER:  Before we get into the specifics of this project that we want to talk about, can we just talk about how big the problem of poaching is?  I mean, the figures are staggering.  Almost 6,000 rhinos have been killed by poachers since 2008.  At one point they were being killed at a rate of one every eight hours, a rate that, if it persists, means the extinction of the species in six years.  Why does this tragedy tug so fiercely at your heartstrings? DOC WATSON:  Okay.  So I come from the computer world.  My passion is wildlife and conservation.  To give you your specifics, rhinos are still being killed one every eight hours, which is three per day.  And if it continues at the rate that it's going, about 2025 we will have no rhinos left in this world, and certainly in South Africa.  And so I think from my point of view, being passionate about it, I think there was almost a calling, if I could call it like that, where I could marry technology to conservation and have a look at saving species.  And I'm sure you'll be aware that there are 7,000 species around the world that are endangered currently.  This is just looking initially at Africa, where we want to save, not only rhino, but also the elephant, pangolin – which is a scaly anteater – as well as lion.  And those are all highly endangered animals currently in Africa. Doc's Passion for Conservation BILL YATES:  Doc, this passion of yours goes way back; right?  I think I've heard you speak and say that you travel the world just to understand endang...

“You need to push yourself because when those doors open, they fling open and if it's not a door that's open, there's a window you can squeeze into usually.”- Gugu Malope, Ep98. The Monica Kade Podcast In Episode 98 of The Monica Kade Podcast we talk to Gugu Malope, our fourth conversation in the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls series.  My conversation 'Choose The Person You Want to Be' with Gugu was truly eye-opening. It forced me to take a deep look at my life, at the world around me and to remember that no matter where we come from, we have the power to choose. We can look at where we are and know there is something more for us and we can step toward it, or we can stay put. Our power lies in the way we choose to respond to what is. Meet Gugu Vivica Malope. She was born in the small town of Middelburg, Mpumalanga but raised by her grandmother in Johannesburg. She is part of the 2014 graduating class, The O'Paragons of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.  "Leadership isn't making people follow you and your ideologies—although that could be  a component—I don't think that's what it is. For me, at its core, leadership is leading yourself and then inspiring people around you to almost take what they can from the way you live, to implement it on themselves." - Gugu Malope, Ep98. The Monica Kade Podcast Gugu started her journey at OWLAG in 2008 where she was active in the leadership, sports and cultural facets of the school. She played netball, was part of the senior debating team, choir and Marimba ensemble. She continued her studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Media Studies. She is currently studying towards her Honours in Media Studies at University of South Africa (UNISA).  Her career in IT services began in 2018 through the Dimension Data Graduate Accelerate Programme and is now an Enterprise Client Manager at the Dimension Data subsidiary Internet Solutions.  This conversation will change the way you look at your life. You cannot walk away not appreciating what you have. If you do, you haven't truly listened to her story. Learn About What is was like to be raised by her grandmother? The upbringing and approach to life her grandmother imparted with her. Her funny story about applying to OWLAG? What it felt like and what it meant for her and her family to be accepted into OWLAG. What leadership means to Gugu. How Gugu fosters leadership in her daily life? The number one life lesson OWLAG taught her. What Gugu has learned about herself having achieved so much academically? Why she loves the possibilities in IT. Her big vision for her life? Who is one of her greatest mentors in life so far? What they supported her to realise? How Gugu yearns to change the world? Gugu's one piece of self-acquired wisdom for you about chasing your dream. Signature Questions 1. Sunset or sunrise, and why? 2. What she's afraid of? 3. The piece of wisdom she's been given that she lives by?
