If you could go anywhere in the world to ride right now, where would it be? For Olympic gold medalist Annemiek van Vleuten, that answer is sunny Colombia. And while Ineos Grenadiers are in Mallorca and Deceuninck-Quick-Step heads to Calpe, other riders head to some unusual retreats. Sadhbh O'Shea and Ben Delaney discuss who is going where, and why. American Tokyo Olympian Gavin Hoover just won the men's endurance competition at the inaugural UCI Track Champions League, which had him and the other track stars traveling from Mallorca to Lithuania to London to race in front of sold-out crowds.

(totalwomenscycling.com)   Let's get into our interview with Marianne Martin!     Post interview discussion: Red Zinger / Coors Classic Didn't know anything about racing   Quote at 24 minutes and 45 minutes       From 1984 to 1989, the Tour de France Women was the curtain raising event for the men's event. It was organised by the Tour de France Society, organiser of the men's Tour de France. In 1990, the event changed its name and format, becoming the Tour of the EEC Women, which ran until 1993.   In 1992, a new race was created, the Tour cycliste féminin, organised in August by Pierre Boué. The race lacked stable sponsorship and with the location of stages determined by locations willing to contribute, there were long transfers between stages. Until 1998, it was the Tour Cycliste Féminin, but the Société du Tour de France, organizers of the men's Tour de France, said that infringed their trademark and in 1999 the name was changed.[2] It resumed under the name Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale, but was not held in 2004 because of organisational difficulties. It returned, smaller, in 2005. The previous tours were 10 to 15 stages; later ones had five and stayed in one region. The race also received a lower classification by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), and had a reduced field. In 2008, the race was six days and seven stages. However, in 2009 the race was only four days long with only 66 riders, after a planned race start and three stages in Britain fell through, leading winner Emma Pooley to joke that the race was "more of a Petite Boucle than Grande."[3][4] The race was discontinued after 2009.   France was left with no major women's stage race after the Tour de l'Aude Cycliste Féminin and the Route de France Féminine finished in 2010 and 2016 respectively.  For the last few years the race turned into a 1 day event titled La Course (La Course by Le Tour de France 2021 (cyclingnews.com)).   In 2022, the race is to return, with eight stages.  Zwift will be the main sponsor.     Our News is sponsored by Buddy Insurance. When being asked about trying to win the Tour, which he so nearly did in 2019, "Never say never," was the answer.   "Why not think about it before the end of my career?" he continued. "There are a lot of questions to be asked and I'd need to speak to the team. But I don't want to end my time with the regret of not ever trying."   In 2019 Alaphilippe led the race for 14 days, only losing the jersey twice, once to Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) - who took the jersey from the breakaway on stage six to the top of the Super Planche des Belles Filles before ceding it back to Alaphilippe two days later - and finally to Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) after the Colombian attacked solo on the Col de l'Iseran on stage 19. On that day the general classification times were taken at the top of the Iseran due to mudslides and extreme weather, which forced the race to be stopped before the final climb to Tignes.   "I've never raced a Grand Tour thinking of winning it," Alaphilippe said, "so there wasn't the same pressure. But I can understand why it's been difficult for [Thibaut] Pinot and [Romain] Bardet," Alaphilippe said.   List of all men's winners of the Tour de France https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tour_de_France_general_classification_winners     What's New in the 303:   Headsweats Debuts New Look with Updated Logo and Product BOULDER, Colo. Deceuninck–Quick-Step had an incredible 2021 which had the narrative of three comeback stories - Mark Cavendish, Remco Evenepoel and Fabio Jakobsen. Mark Cavendish managed to take 4 historic stage wins at the Tour de France to equal the all time stage winning record of 34 stage wins that only Eddy Merckx could match. Remco Evenepoel started his season at the Giro d'Italia after his Il Lombardia crash in 2020. The first of two very challenging weekend stages was a bit of a stalemate as far as the race between the overall contenders was concerned but there was an intriguing battle for the stage win. RIchard Moore and Lionel Birnie check in with our man in Spain, Daniel Friebe, to recap stage 14, which was won by Romain Bardet. The Frenchman was arguably the most dangerous of the riders in the 18-man break and we'll hear from another man in the lead group, Lotto-Soudal's Matt Holmes, who wanted to get away without Bardet but suffered two untimely punctures. We also clear yesterday's little local difficulty between Deceuninck-Quick Step's sprinter Fabio Jakobsen and his lead-out man, and eventual stage winner, Florian Senechal. Finally, we learn about Jose Maria Jimenez, who lit up the Vuelta around the turn of the century and was one of three high-profile tragic figures in professional cycling in the early 2000s. Tomorrow's stage visits Jimenez's home town and will pay tribute to El Chava. Sir Bradley Wiggins is joined by Orla Chennaoui and Graham Willgoss to get right up to speed with the Vuelta a España after Brad's time away at the Tour de France and Tokyo.Brad's backing an unrecognisably relaxed Primoz Roglic to make it three Vuelta victories in a row, and says his Jumbo-Visma team "might as well be in the jersey, because they're riding like they have it". Rogla seems happy to attack the last week, says Brad, but must now show his hand in the mountains to take the lead back from Odd Christian Eiking. Orla, meanwhile, is enjoying the new Jumbo leader's new laidback style: "He's perceptively giggled twice [in interviews], and it's an odd thing to listen to, because he's usually so monosyllabic!" In another Grand Tour that is not going Ineos's way, there's a warning from Brad not to write off Egan Bernal too quickly. Praise, too, for the calm head on young Tom Pidcock's shoulders after his Olympic gold and his focus on the road ahead. Plus, the trio pick over Fabio Jakobsen's extraordinary reaction to being dropped by his Deceuninck–Quick-Step sprint train. Just like that another Tour de France has come and gone. On the final episode of Aérogramme with La Course en Tête from the Grande Boucle, we take a look back at the good and the bad, the compelling and the not so from the 2021 edition. OJ Borg hosts as Peter Cossins and La Course en Tête contributor Nick Bull join in. From an opening week of tear-jerking stories and fan-favorite winners, coupled with a slew of horrific crashes, to a GC battle that some say got wrapped up before the first rest day, there's a lot to discuss. One of the biggest storylines of course is the return of Mark Cavendish. He was already one of the best sprinters ever before this year, but now with a performance that some are comparing to Tiger Woods at the 2019 Masters it's hard for anyone to say he's not the greatest sprinter of all time. And his Deceuninck–Quick-Step team deserves ample praise for their savvy, guiding him to an impressive four stages. Now the big question is whether Cavendish will return to the Tour next year. Then there's the man who denied Cavendish a record breaking 35th stage win on the Champs Élysées—after winning on Mont Ventoux and the time trial just the day before. Could Wout van Aert have a go at contending for the GC? In a Jumbo-Visma team that has two GC contenders already in Primož Roglič and Jonas Vingegaard, plus another promising GC talent in Sepp Kuss, is there room for him to pursue that? And speaking of GC contenders, now that Tadej Pogačar has won his second Tour, how far can he go in his career? And we look ahead to the Vuelta a España to the anticipated matchup of Pogačar, Roglič and Egan Bernal. Then there were the parts of the Tour we would rather leave behind. There was the police raid on the Bahrain-Victorious team, followed by Matej Mohorič's stage win with a zipped lips victory salute. And then there's the crashes from the first week which no doubt impacted the entire outcome of the race. Meanwhile, Sophie Smith and Jeremy Whittle check in with a road diary of their time on the ground at the Tour as they make the final transfer to Paris for stage 21. Aérogramme is presented by Hyperice.

Stage 18 of the Tour de France saw a second dominant victory for Tadej Pogačar in the clouds of the Pyrenees, on the summit finish of Luz Ardiden – where Sir Brad and Graham Willgoss are marooned in a traffic jam for their latest look back at the day's racing. Did a short and sharp stage – just short of 130km with two HC climbs – play into the champion elect's hands? “He didn't really have to blow his rivals away, he just did the last bit,” says Brad on Pogačar's supremacy. “They could have done with another climb in there really, instead of having 60-70km on the flat beforehand. “Stages like that, with climbs like that, almost need another two climbs in there to make it a proper Pyrenean stage. It lends itself to everyone being fresh at the end.”Questions, too, for Ineos, still empty-handed at this Tour. We saw the familiar Ineos (/Sky) mountain train of old going full gas on the final climb, but that just meant Pogacar willingly climbed aboard. “Is it worth doing that knowing they were going to get beat in the end? There was no way they were going to crack him.”Brad says it would have been a very different Tour had G and Roglic not crashed. But as things stand, Pogačar not only holds the Maillot Jaune but also the Young Rider's and Polka Dot Jerseys. But not the Points Jersey. Full of praise for Mark Cavendish's Deceuninck – Quick-Step team for guiding the Green Jersey through the mountains, Brad says his old friend is in the perfect position to make history with two more flat stages to come. "Merckx is the greatest cyclist of all time. Cav is the best British cyclist of all time, and the greatest sprinter of all time. And he's up there with Eddy Merckx in terms of tally..."Is anyone going to beat Cav's record? I don't think another sprinter will. Is anyone ever going to beat the record of Merckx and Cav as the greatest sprinter of all time and the greatest cyclist of all time?Brad and Bernie also pick the Cav stage wins they've been involved in that mean the most to them – and Brad believes his old mate isn't done just yet: "I wouldn't underestimate how well Cav is going, and it's not because other people aren't here."A tough road lies ahead, with five stages into the heart of the Pyrenees. But Bernie is sure Cav will make it through, given the strength of his Deceuninck Quick-Step team."I had to bring him through the Pyrenees on my own, with Mark Renshaw crying on the wheel!" he says. "Now he has four, five guys even, around him!"Bernie also solves the mystery of Cav's chain coming off at the finish every time.Elsewhere, there is praise for Omer Goldstein's combative day out in the breakaway – and for Simon Yates, who DNF'ed after hitting the road hard in a crash."Coming out of the Giro, your body and your brain are just like: 'How much more can you take?'" says Bernie. Brad and Graham Willgoss look back on another rip-roaring day at the Tour de France that saw AG2R-Citroën's Ben O'Connor solo to a brilliant stage win that cut Tadej Pogacar's lead on GC to just two minutes. One HC and two Category 1 climbs on the Queen Stage of the race took their toll on the peloton, decimating the field on Stage 9."The last two days, it's been hard to follow it," says Brad. "I've not seen a Tour de France like it. It was savage today, and there's not many riders who could have coped with those conditions and those temperatures like Ben O'Connor did. He did it in such style, as well."Tadel Pogacar again looked imperious, hitting the rocket boosters on the final climb and riding away from Team Ineos's Richard Carapaz. Pogacar's superiority has brought with it questions from some quarters that Brad believes are unfair."It's funny how it's always Ineos who face those questions when there's a performance like that, and people like Chris Froome after his performance on Ventoux," he says. "But they don't seem to be raised with Pogacar, and I don't think they should be raised. He's a phenomenon of the sport."One bright spot for Dave Brailsford's squad: it was a much better day for Geraint Thomas. "I'm really pleased for him," says Brad. "I don't think this race is over for G yet. It is for GC, but he can pick up a stage win the way he was going today."Brad was also impressed with Mark Cavendish and Deceuninck – Quick-Step's efforts to get Cav through what he called 'the one stage I was terrified of':"I saw him getting dropped on the first climb, and he had three or four teammates around him," says Brad. "It shows the difference that a team makes to you, committed to a cause and committed to Mark as well. And it shows he was lacking on the team front a couple of years ago, and he's back in his rightful place."Brad sums up the first week: "It's been savage, and I don't remember a Tour like it." A much-needed rest day, then – but lots to look forward to."We're on the race after that," says Brad.
