Who better to wrap up the cobbles and preview the Ardennes with than my old mates Luke Durbridge and Tom Southam right here on this month's Race Communiqué.   We kick this month's episode off by rounding up the Spring so far; from Pogačar's dominance at Flanders right through to Van Aert's redemption at Paris Roubaix, there's been heaps of racing to get stuck into. One race I didn't manage to follow too closely was the Tour of the Basque Country, where young Paul Seixas absolutely dominated from start to finish. Fortunately, Southam was there on the ground in the EF team car, so he gives us the scoop from Spain, and just how good Seixas really is.    The Ardennes classics have already kicked off, with Remco Evenepoel dusting Skjelmose in the sprint to win the Amstel Gold Race. Southam was in the convoy dealing with a unique….pretty gross situation that he's never come across in his career. Safe to say Remco's shape is ominous ahead of Liège - the 4th monument of the year - which is only a few days away. With Pog, Remco, and Seixas all on the start list it looks like we're in for an epic showdown. We go through the course and pick our favourites.   Durbo's just got back after a few days off the bike following Paris Roubaix, and that's what this month's PeloChat is all about; keeping mentally fresh and taking time away from cycling. As you all know by now, Luke's just announced that he's hanging up the wheels after national champs in January 2027. He's riding out a long, distinguished career of 15 years - so this advice is worth listening to.   Talking Tactics is all about that head to head to head we're getting hyped about at Liège-Bastogne-Liège; how do Remco and Seixas overthrow Pogi who, on paper, is probably the favourite. Southam gives us his thoughts.    Finally - of course - it's the Communiquiz; this month I'm quiz master and we're talking monuments. Who's DNF'd more monuments; me, Durbo, or Southam? Met Filippo Ganna bij de mannen en Marlen Reusser bij de vrouwen als winnaars. Voor Wout van Aert lijkt er een vloek te rusten op de semiklassieker met finish in Waregem. In 2024 moest er een streep door zijn voorjaar na een valpartij hier, vorig jaar verloren drie Visma's van Neilson Powless en nu kwam Ganna in de slotmeters voorbijvliegen. Het gevoel bij de Belg is nu alleen heel anders dan voorgaande jaren. Hoe komt dat? Het was een vertrouwd gezicht: Mathieu van der Poel en Wout van Aert samen vooruit in de finale van een klassieker. Het duel kreeg alleen geen échte climax, want onder de vlag van de laatste kilometer van In Flanders Fields – from Middelkerke to Wevelgem werd het duo teruggepakt door het peloton. En dus zullen we nooit weten wie vandaag de sterkste van de twee was. In een nieuwe aflevering van In Het Wiel besteden Niek Goedvolk, Roxane Knetemann en wielerverslaggever Daniël Dwarswaard uiteraard ook aandacht aan de overwinning van Jasper Philipsen, waarmee Alpecin–Deceuninck de bingo compleet maakt. Tadej Pogacar mag weer een vakje op zijn monumentenbingo afstrepen. Met Milaan-San Remo heeft de Sloveen het voor hem misschien wel moeilijkste monument nu ook in de pocket. En dat terwijl eigenlijk alles tegenzat: UAE kon hier niet met de gedroomde opstelling aantreden, de wind stond niet gunstig, meesterknecht Jan Christen viel al vroeg uit en toen ging Pogacar zelf ook nog tegen het asfalt. En toch was de schade op de Cipressa in no-time gerepareerd. In een nieuwe aflevering van In Het Wiel bespreekt Niek Goedvolk met Roxane Knetemann en wielerverslaggever Marijn Abbenhuijs hoe Pogacar het haast onmogelijke deed. Met Milaan-San Remo staat zaterdag het eerste wielermonument van het jaar op de kalender en daar is vooral de grote vraag: wat moet team UAE Team Emirates doen om ervoor te zorgen dat Tadej Pogacar een zo groot mogelijke kans heeft om Mathieu van der Poel te kloppen? In deze aflevering van In Het Wiel neemt Niek Goedvolk het tactisch plan door met Roxane Knetemann en wielerverslaggever Marijn Abbenhuijs. Een lekkere zondag met Mathieu van der Poel die nog even een training van 40 kilometer op kop van het peloton deed in Tirreno Adriatico, Jonas Vingegaard die niet van Lenny Martinez afkwam in Parijs-Nice en Karlijn Swinkels die Nederland een klassiekerzege bezorgde in Trofeo Alfredo Binda. Niek Goedvolk bespreekt met Roxane Knetemann en wielerverslaggever Daniël Dwarswaard de koersen van vandaag en de afgelopen week. Van der Poel maakte indruk met twee geweldige ritzeges: is dit de beste versie die we ooit van hem hebben gezien? En hoe komt Tadej Pogacar straks in Milaan-San Remo van de Nederlander af? De Sloveen krijgt daarbij in ieder geval hulp van Isaac del Toro, winnaar van het eindklassement in de Tirreno. Wout van Aert hoort niet meer bij de favorieten, maar toonde de voorbije dagen wel goede vorm. Nu nog durven gokken zoals MVDP. In Parijs-Nice zagen we een hele andere Jonas Vingegaard dan we gewend zijn. Heel gretig, haast amicaal en volop in de aanval. Waar zou die drang vandaan komen? En dan was er ook nog de misschien wel doorbraak van Swinkels. Zij bleef ijzig kalm met Anna van der Breggen in haar wiel en sprintte naar haar mooiste overwinning ooit. Wat kan ze straks tijdens de andere voorjaarsklassiekers? Rox sluit deze nieuwe aflevering van In Het Wiel af met een anekdote over een van haar deelnames aan Binda.
