Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie are back to review the latest news and racing in the world of procycling, assisted this week by ace commentator Rob Hatch. ‘Opening Weekend' may not have lived up to all the hype but both Omloop het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne did serve up some juicy talking points. Among the hottest topics in the Belgian media were Visma-Lease a Bike's toils - and they're also on the agenda in this week's ‘Coorevits Corner', our weekly check-in with Flandrian cycling oracle Hugo Coorevits. In part three of the episode, we look ahead to Strade Bianche and Paris-Nice at the weekend. One of the favourites for overall victory on the Promenade des Anglais a week on Sunday, Pavel Sivakov, also shares some childhood memories of “The Race to the Sun” and discusses newfound confidence since joining UAE Team Emirates last year. Johan Bruyneel, George Hincapie, and Spencer Martin break down the big picture takeaways from the last weekend of racing, from Tadej Pogačar's dominance at the UAE Tour, Jonas Vingegaard's time trial masterclass to win the Volta ao Algarve, and Pavel Sivakov's win at Ruta del Sol before debating if Visma is losing ground to the absurdly deep superteam UAE has assembled over the last few off-seasons. The Odd Tandem Cycling Podcast with Bobby Julich and Jens Voigt
Pavel Sivakov has found comfort in change. After six years at Ineos and Sky he traded one super team for another - joining UAE Emirates for the 2024 season.A key lieutenant to Tadej Pogacar at the Tour de France and Il Lombardia he faced off against his teammate in national colours at the World Championships this year and was the only man capable of sticking with the dominant Slovenian in the middle phase of the race. Pavel shares the difference between two of cycling's biggest teams, why he made the change and why he chose to represent France instead of Russia on the international stage. The Odd Tandem is a Shocked Giraffe production. Hoe sterk is Fabio Jakobsen? In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, long-time Grand Tour diarist Pavel Sivakov joins us to reflect on his 2023 season and look ahead to his imminent move to the world's number one-ranked team, UAE Team Emirates. The winner of the Giro della Toscana in September and a top-10 finisher in six stage races, Sivakov enjoyed his best season ever in 2023 - and yet recognises that, in some pundits' eyes, his Grand Tour results are still used as the single measure of his career trajectory. He and Daniel Friebe discuss why that is while also looking back at his time at INEOS, examining that team's quest to build a new identity, dissecting his own issues with self-doubt - and casting thoughts ahead to the next phase of his career. RadioCycling will be offering three episodes a week during the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Our first Tour-themed show, backed by our new sponsor Saddle Skedaddle, offers a blitz of the latest news going into the world's greatest race.We start with the latest on transfer dealings at Ineos Grenadiers, where there's a lot of outward traffic but very little movement in the other direction. With Tao Geoghegan-Hart, Ben Tulett, Pavel Sivakov, Carlos Rodríguez and now Dani Martínez all heavily linked with moves away from the British super squad, we examine the Ineos transfer strategy. Is there a big signing in the offing?EF Education-EasyPost have named what's arguably their strongest ever line-up for the Tour. Team boss Jonathan Vaughters tells us about their strategy going into the race, why he's expecting team leader Richard Carapaz to come good over the next three weeks, and also offers some suggestions on how to improve rider safety in the wake of Gino Mäder's tragic death at the Tour of Switzerland.Fears that Tadej Pogačar might be forced to sit out the Tour after breaking a wrist in April have been allayed and the two-time champion is fit and raring to go. UAE Team Emirates head coach Iñigo San Millán has played a vital role in Pogačar's return to peak fitness and tells us about Pogačar's training regime during this period and also the UAE leader's love of a chocolate mousse. Most of the pre-Tour talk has, inevitably, been about the GC battle, but what's in store for the clash of the sprinting titans? We turned to Marcel Kittel for an expert's analysis of this contest. Winner of 14 Tour stages, Kittel also reveals why Mark Cavendish was always his biggest rival and who he expects to emerge as this year's Tourminator of the bunch sprints.Last weekend fan favourite Fred Wright took a highly emotional first professional win in the British road championship. The Londoner lifts the lid on what he expects to be an action-packed race for his Bahrain Victorious team, which will be aiming to contend on all fronts.Support the show

The Giro made its way towards Aprica for what many have dubbed this year's Queen Stage. Having set out from the western shore of Lake Garda, the peloton would scale the Mortirolo & the Valico di Santa Cristina - to name just two of the climbs on today's route - before finishing in Aprica, the scene of many a famous Giro exploit. We hear from Valerio Piva, who helped steer Jan Hirt to a surprise stage win, & Pavel Sivakov, who helped steer Richard Carapaz through a stage that solidified his position in the maglia rosa. There's also talk of citrons, Sforzato, pizzoccheri & - again - of local hero the Trout of Gavardo. Pavel Sivakov turned professional in 2017, signing a three-year contract with, then Team Sky, now team INEOS Grenadiers. Pavel finished ninth in the Giro d'Italia in 2019, which was his second Grand Tour. Pavel also competed in the 2020 edition of the Tour de France and the 2020/21 Tokyo Olympic Games. At the time of recording Pavel was sitting at the top of Sierra Nevada having just completed a monstrous training week that included 18,609m of elevation across 767kms 28:35 mins in the saddle. He was in the final stages for his preparation for the 2022 Edition of the Tour of the Alps, a five-day stage race set between Italy and Austria in the stunning Alps, a race which in 2019 offered Pavel his very first victory in the professional cycling peloton taking out stage two. Our review of the 2021 men's road racing season continues with a deep look at the three grand tours. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe weigh up the era of the galacticos in a year when the three outstanding stage racers – Egan Bernal, Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič – each won a grand tour. Transport yourself back to Italy, France and Spain with our greatest hits compilations, a selection of audio highlights from our travels this year, before we discuss each of the races in turn. We look back at the best days of racing, ask whether the Vuelta really is overtaking the Giro as the 'second' grand tour, revisit Mark Cavendish's record-equalling stage wins at the Tour and ask which of Bernal and Roglic is best placed to challenge Pogačar next season. We hear from Joe Dombrowski, Pavel Sivakov and Jonathan Vaughters on the Pog-nomenon and ask what threats there are to his dominance. And we speak to Toms Skujiņš about arguably the best day's racing from the grand tours – or at least the day which provided the least expected thrills. In our final episode of Kilometre 0 from the Vuelta a España we hear for the last time from our three audio diarists, James Knox of Deceuninck-Quickstep, Pavel Sivakov of Ineos Grenadiers and Joan Bou of Euskaltel-Euskadi. While Sivakov finished the Vuelta in good shape, and able, he said, to carry on for another week, for Knox and Bou the final week was about survival. Bou crashed heavily and, having been in several breakaways in the first two weeks, he was reduced in the last stages to merely hoping to finish with the gruppetto. With characteristic candour, Knox admits that he is struggling for motivation as the Vuelta draws to a close. He appreciates the places and the sights, and can reflect with satisfaction on his team's four stage wins, but wrestles with his own feelings of fatigue and low morale. In our latest episode of Kilometre 0 we hear about the second week of the Vuelta a España from two of our audio diarists, Pavel Sivakov of Ineos Grenadiers and Joan Bou of Euskaltel-Euskadi. Sivakov talks about getting his confidence back after the low of crashing out of the Giro d'Italia, while Bou tells us about how he is coping with his first grand tour and the longest race of his career. In the second instalment of our riders' diaries from the Vuelta a España we hear from James Knox of Deceuninck-Quick-Step, Pavel Sivakov of Ineos Grenadiers and Joan Bou of Euskaltel-Euskadi. Bou is from Valencia and when the Vuelta reached some of his local roads at the end of the first week he shone, figuring in a couple of breakaways, including the strong break on stage six, from which Magnus Cort held on to win. Knox has been part of a team that's won two stages with Fabio Jakobsen, whose return has given the Vuelta one of its feel good stories. On stage seven Knox also achieved his highest average heart rate for an hour – 186 beats per minute. And Sivakov went close to the win on stage seven, finishing third behind Michael Storer, who incurred the wrath of El Siv by apparently attacking when Sivakov dropped his chain. Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie dial up our man in Spain, Daniel Friebe, to discuss stage nine of the Vuelta a España, the final test in the mountains before the first rest day of the race. A couple of days ago we were hoping to learn more about the likely shape of the battle for the red jersey only for a number of riders to gain time in the break and muddy the picture at the top of the overall standings. Today we did get a sort out and with two weeks still to go the question for Movistar is, how do they crack Primoz Roglic? We discuss a thrilling stage, won by the Italian Damiano Caruso, whose Bahrain Victorious team was also celebrating the fact their rider Jack Haig moved up to fourth overall today. We hear from Caruso, Haig and their sports director Gorazd Stangelj too. Ineos Grenadiers, and Adam Yates in particular, tried to unsettle Roglic but succeeded only in putting their own rider Egan Bernal on the back foot. Meanwhile Roglic was left with only one Jumbo-Visma teammate, Sepp Kuss, for company at the crucial moment. We hear from Pavel Sivakov of Ineos and Kuss on the brewing tactical battle between the teams. The Vuelta a España burst into life with the toughest stage so far, to Balcón de Alicante. There was a desperate escape from the last chance saloon by Team DSM, a crash for one member of Movistar's trident and a clutch of dangerous riders climbed back into contention. Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie dial up Daniel Friebe in Spain to discuss the action. Richard wastes no time claiming the stage winner Michael Storer for Scotland. We discuss the impact Alejandro Valverde's crash and departure from the Vuelta will have on Movistar's other two leaders, Enric Mas and Miguel Angel Lopez. We hear from Pavel Sivakov about the timing of one of Storer's attacks, from Chris Hamilton about his victorious teammate and ask Roglic the burning question of the day – have you seen the Netflix documentary about Movistar? The peloton spent most of the fifth stage anticipating crosswinds which never blew but there was still late drama on the approach to Albacete. Daniel Friebe is still in Spain following the Vuelta a España, and he is joined by Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie to discuss the day's racing. We hear from Kenny Elissonde, who was talking down his chances of taking the red jersey before the stage, and discuss the crash which cost Rein Taaramae another day in the overall lead. We also hear from Pavel Sivakov about the crosswinds and Matt Winston on DSM's hopes after Romain Bardet was caught in the crash and lost more than 12 minutes. We also discuss Jasper Philipsen's second stage win and the brewing battle for the green jersey with Fabio Jakobsen. Knox, riding for Deceuninck-Quickstep, is riding for GC in his second grand tour of the year. Sivakov, of Ineos Grenadiers, is in a supporting role in a team that includes Egan Bernal, Richard Carapaz and Adam Yates.
Remco Evenepoel returned to racing at the Giro d'Italia, after nine months out with injury, and finished 7th in the opening time trial. What can we expect from Evenepoel, the 21-year-old Belgian phenomenon? Nobody seems to know, not even his Deceuninck-Quick-Step teammate Pieter Serry. We hear from Serry, from Jan-Pieter De Vlieger of Het Nieuwsblad and Renaat Schotte of Sporza. We also ask whether the top riders need racing to prepare for their major targets, speaking to Joe Dombrowski, Larry Warbasse, Pavel Sivakov, Team Bike Exchange sports director Matt White and Egan Bernal's coach, Xabier Artetxe. This episode of The Cycling Podcast starts with the most significant corrections corner ever following Daniel's assertion last week that Ineos Grenadiers rider Pavel Sivakov had climbed the equivalent of the distance to the moon... We also discuss the early races of the season, the big stories in the news and look ahead to Chris Froome's debut for his new team, Israel Start-Up Nation. Can he win a fifth Tour de France after his long recovery from injury? Or will age and the emergence of so many other grand tour contenders count against him. We also hear from Doug Ryder, the boss of the Qhubeka-Assos team which nearly collapsed at the end of last year. Having saved the team from extinction he was celebrating at the weekend as Giacomo Nizzolo got their first victory of the season at the Clasica Almeria. In this episode Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss the Ineos Grenadiers strategy for this season's three grand tours. With Geraint Thomas, Egan Bernal, Richard Carapaz and Tao Geoghegan Hart in their squad they have four grand tour champions to divide between three races – and that's before considering the ambitions of Pavel Sivakov, Adam Yates and others. So how will they manage it? And will Dave Brailsford's suggestion that he wants his team to rip up the established tactical handbook and race more freely be possible? Can they 'prepare like Germany, play like Brazil' as he put it? We also discuss the latest UCI rule changes which bans the so-called 'super tuck' descending position and seriously increases fines for littering. Episode 13: It's time to hear from our Tour de France diarists again. In this update, we hear from Simon Geschke of CCC who has featured in several breaks and is also helping his teammate Matteo Trentin close the gap in the green jersey competition. But what is the tactic? Geschke explains. Michael Mørkøv of Deceuninck-Quick Step is leadout man for Sam Bennett, who currently has the green jersey, so how concerned are they about Trentin's threat? We also hear from Ineos Grenadiers rider Pavel Sivakov and Connor Swift of Arkéa-Samsic. Despatches from our team of audio diarists will appear throughout our Tour de France coverage as well as in Kilometre 0. Episode 8: With back-to-back sprints coming up after the rest day and no win on the board yet, the pressure was beginning to mount on Deceuninck-Quick Step's Irish champion Sam Bennett. Being the designated sprinter for the Belgian squad at the Tour de France brings with it responsibility. The long line of sprinters who have shouldered that expectation includes Tom Boonen, Mark Cavendish, Marcel Kittel and more recently Fernando Gaviria and Elia Viviani. In this episode we tell the story of stage 10 to Îl de Ré, a day fraught with uncertainty over the coronavirus test results and the threat of crosswinds. But, as it turned out, it went perfectly for Bennett and his leadout man Michael Mørkøv. We also hear from Sunweb's Nikias Arndt and Life in the Peloton host Mitch Docker – who has experience as both a sprinter and leadout man – gives his tactical breakdown of the finish. Despatches from our team of audio diarists will appear throughout our Tour de France coverage as well as in Kilometre 0. The full line-up is Nikias Arndt, Sam Bewley, Simon Geschke, Ryan Gibbons, Jens Keukeleire, Michael Mørkøv, Lukas Pöstlberger, Pavel Sivakov, Connor Swift and sports director Tom Southam. Episode 7: Our team of diarists take us inside the Tour de France bubble again. We hear from Simon Geschke of CCC Team about being in the thick of the action in the Pyrenees and from Connor Swift of Nairo Quintana's Arkéa-Samsic team about what it's like to ride in the peloton in the mountains. We also hear from Ineos Grenadiers rider Pavel Sivakov about the Tour stage that went three kilometres from the home where he grew up and from Nikias Arndt of Sunweb about the spectactors who were – and weren't – wearing masks on the roadside. Episode 6: On Sunday The Tour de France stage started in Pau, home town of Nicolas Portal, who passed away suddenly in March aged just 40. This episode of Kilometre 0 remembers Portal with Vincent Lavenu, the AG2R sports director who helped him switch from mountain biking to road racing. We also hear from Team Ineos principal Dave Brailsford and CEO Fran Millar, who talk about the kind, sensitive person who leaves a big void in the team, and from Pavel Sivakov who Portal persuaded to join the team. Episode 5: We hand the mic to our Tour de France diarists again to get inside the race bubble. In this episode we hear from Connor Swift of Arkéa-Samsic who is riding his first Tour de France – in fact, his first Grand Tour – and has the job of looking after their leader Nairo Quintana. Swift gives us his first impressions of the race and talks about how he's settling into the rhythm. The coronavirus crisis has affected the Tour in many ways, some obvious, some less so. Riders are used to sharing rooms but on this Tour many are in separate rooms. There are fewer media demands – at least face-to-face ones with journalists, and a greater sense of being cut off from the rest of the world. So how are they passing the time away from the race? Jens Keukeleire of EF Pro Cycling talks about the books he's reading while away from home. We also hear from Ryan Gibbons of NTT Pro Cycling and Nikias Arndt of Sunweb, who have had a particularly good opening week. And there are updates from Pavel Sivakov, who crashed twice on the opening day and has been battling to regain his strength so he can contribute fully for Ineos Grenadiers later in the race. Despatches from our team of audio diarists will appear throughout our Tour de France coverage as well as in Kilometre 0. The opening stage of this most unusual Tour de France turned out to be a strange day, befitting this most peculiar year. Join Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau in Nice to recap a stage won by the veteran Norwegian Alexander Kristoff, who last won a stage on the Champs-Élysées a couple of years ago. With rain falling in Nice for the first time in a couple of months the roads were like glass and a number of crashes led to some of the riders calling for a truce – a truce that Astana briefly ignored. In this episode we hear from some of the audio diarists who will be taking us inside the Tour de France bubble. Pavel Sivakov of Ineos Grenadiers talks about his brutal introduction to the race, Lukas Pöstlberger reacts to the conditions on the road, EF Pro Cycling sports director Tom Southam on the Covid-19 protocols and Michael Mørkøv about tomorrow’s stage two. Plus we play out with Doctor Octave’s song Giants of the Road. In a bumper episode of The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe recap a thrilling and incident-packed week of racing and try to work out the implications for the Tour de France. The Critérium du Dauphiné is always an important warm-up race for the Tour but with the Grand Départ in Nice just two weeks away it was an even bigger indicator of form. Daniel was in France and reports back on the race, while Richard draws up his list of the week's 18 winners and losers. Jumbo-Visma started and ended the week brilliantly but suffered setbacks too. Primoz Roglic pulled out while leading the race following a crash and key helper Steven Kruijswijk also crashed out of the race. Meanwhile, it was far from plain sailing for Team Ineos. Egan Bernal also pulled out with a back issue and Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas were off the pace all week. Their only bright spot was Pavel Sivakov, who finished the race strongly. We hear from him in this episode. We then switch our attention to Italy and il Lombardia, where Jakob Fuglsang took his second monument victory following Liège-Bastogne-Liège last year. The Dane saw off George Bennett, who again shone for Jumbo-Visma, but there were questions for Trek-Segafredo, who got three riders into the final six man selection only to finish fourth, fifth and sixth. However, the race was marred by another serious crash, this time for Remco Evenepoel, and an incident where an public car got onto the course near the finish. Is it time for responsibility for race safety to be taken over by an independent body? The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science in Sport. Still up in Tenerife, we sat down with one of the Team's young stars Putin, aka Pavel Sivakov, to introduce you all to our flying Russian. A king of Zwift during lockdown, top-10 in the Giro at the age of 22 and set to make his Tour debut this year, there was plenty to talk about. Enjoy.
Pavel Sivakov chats to Matt Stephens about the new era of young professional riders, and how he tried lots of sports before taking to cycling like a fish to water, or more accurately, like the child of two professional cyclists to cycling. Also, guess that snack is back! But how will Mr International get on in our relatively localised corn and potato based snack trivia game?
In this episode of The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss the European Championship road races and the conclusion of the Tour of Poland. The theme of the episode is the continuing brilliant results being achieved by young riders – the latest being Pavel Sivakov's victory in Poland – and we ask why this generation of riders in their early 20s is making such a strong mark on the peloton. We also hear from another young rider, Tao Geoghegan Hart about his performance in Poland, the impact Bjorg Lambrecht's death had on the peloton and also the upcoming Vuelta a España. Geoghegan Hart is touted to be the Team Ineos leader in Spain later this month. "Speculation," is all he will say in response to that, though. Richard, Lionel and Daniel answer your questions on the 2019 Giro d'Italia for one last time before wrapping-up the final talking points. We also hear some reflections on the pink race from a handful of the veterans of the Baby Giro, including Pavel Sivakov, Mikkel Honore, Scott Davies and Jai Hindley. Finally, there are a few words from Mitchelton-Scott owner Gerry Ryan on Esteban Chaves' win at San Martino di Castrozza and the future of the team. The penultimate day of the Giro d’Italia and the final mountain stage saw a minor shakeup of the overall classification, with Mikel Landa leapfrogging Primoz Roglic to occupy the final step of the podium. But with only a small deficit to make up, Roglic should be the rider to finish behind Richard Carapaz and Vincenzo Nibali in Verona on Sunday. Richard Moore and Daniel Friebe discuss the stage and there are interviews with Nibali and Roglic’s sports director, Addy Engels. We also hear from two of the revelations of the race, Pavel Sivakov and Eddie Dunbar — and Sivakov gives us an eye witness account of an incident that led to Miguel Angel Lopez attacking a spectator. After a spring of near-misses in the one-day Classics, Jakob Fuglsang finally crossed the line first to win Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and to continue an extraordinary run of success by his Astana team. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss Fuglsang's transformation in 2019 and look at whether the new finish to La Doyenne made for a more exciting race. Lionel reports back from Belgium, where he watched Flèche Wallonne as well as Liège, while making a new episode for friends of the podcast. While there he also spoke to two Dutch sports directors, Aike Visbeek of Team Sunweb and Addy Engels of Jumbo-Visma, about the other revelation of the spring, Mathieu van der Poel, the winner of last week's Amstel Gold Race. We also hear from Tao Geoghegan Hart, who won two stages at the Tour of the Alps as his Sky teammate Pavel Sivakov won the race overall. The fourteenth stage of the Vuelta a España finished with a new climb to Les Praeres which provided the platform for Simon Yates to win the stage and reclaim the red jersey. Richard Moore, Fran Reyes and Daniel Friebe discuss the action and Yates’ chances of holding on to the jersey against the formidable looking Colombian duo of Nairo Quintana and Miguel Angel Lopez. We hear from Richie Porte, who complains about the influence of the TV motorbikes at the Vuelta and from one of the day’s protagonists, Ion Izagirre. There’s also a feature on the promising young Russian at Team Sky, Pavel Sivakov, who abandoned the Vuelta during the stage but is one to watch for the future.
