What is Shame? What is health shame vs toxic shame? What if someone is unaware of their feelings, including shame? Can you heal from shame alone? These are the questions we will be asking Dr. Curt Thompson. Many of our neurodiverse relationships have shame- either about the diagnosis, about not having the perfect Christian marriage, or not meeting someone's needs- what do we do about that? How can clergy deal with their own shame of not knowing how to help neurodiverse couples?About our Guest:Psychiatrist, speaker, and author Curt Thompson connects our intrinsic desire to be known with the need to tell truer stories about ourselves — showing us how to form deep relationships, discover meaning, and live integrated, creative lives.--Curt Thompson, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist, author, speaker, and co-host of The Being Known Podcast. He has been in private practice for over 30 years in Falls Church, Virginia, graduated from Wright State University's Boonshoft School of Medicine, and completed his psychiatric residency at Temple University Hospital. He strives to help patients develop flourishing lives by telling their stories more honestly to become more deeply known for creating beauty and goodness in the world. With conviction and humor, he trains clinicians and speaks at workshops, retreats, and conferences, integrating neuroscience, human relationships, and Christian faith. He and his wife, Phyllis, are the parents of two adult children and live in Northern Virginia.--Psychiatrist Curt Thompson, MD, brings together a dialect of interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB) and Christian anthropology to educate and encourage others as they seek to fulfill their intrinsic desire to feel known, valued, and connected. Curt understands that deep, authentic relationships are essential to experiencing a healthier, more purposeful life — but the only way to realize this isto begin telling our stories more truly. His unique insights about how the brain affects and processes relationships help people discover a fresh perspective and practical applications to foster healthy andvibrant lives, allowing them to get unstuck and move toward the next beautiful thing they're being called to make.WEBSITE, PODCAST, and SOCIAL MEDIA****Website www.CurtThompsonMD.comPodcast www.BeingKnownPodcast.comInstagram CurtThompsonMDFacebook CurtThompsonMD@CurtThompsonMD

This week Steve and Yvonne interview Jordan Strokovsky of Strokovsky LLC (https://actionafterinjury.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here to Rate and Review View/Download Trial Documents Case Details: Jordan won his client a $30 million recovery against Temple University Hospital in one of the largest medical malpractice cases in Pennsylvania's history. Despite the hospital's denial of wrongdoing, Jordan refused their offer of $3 million and prepared tirelessly for court to ensure a just outcome for his client. The hospital admitted fault and the jury awarded $25.9M to Jordan's Mr. Parks ($6M for future medical costs and $20M for pain and suffering) after a comprehensive investigation and a hard-fought trial. The hospital hired three law firms in an attempt to overturn the verdict and offered a settlement less than the awarded amount. Jordan's client refused to settle, and Jordan won every argument against the big firms. The court refused the hospital's request to reduce the verdict, and $3.7 million in delay damages were added. The total recovery now exceeds $30 million, including over $600,000 in interest. No appeal was filed. Guest Bio: Jordan Strokovsky Jordan Strokovsky is a trial lawyer serving the catastrophically injured in a diverse range of cases, including medical malpractice, birth injury, truck accidents, fires, explosions, plane crashes, premises liability, product liability, workplace injuries, toxic torts, civil rights, car accidents, and sexual assault. His hard work ethic, integrity, and compassion earn him the trust of his clients and the respect of his opponents. These attributes have also helped him obtain significant verdicts and settlements. For good reason, many lawyers refer or seek to co-counsel their serious injury and wrongful death cases with Jordan. Jordan handles countless catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases and routinely handles cases pro bono to help his community. His volunteer work includes taking a civil rights case to verdict with the Volunteer Attorney Panel of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, representing victims of sexual abuse with the Support Center for Child Advocates, and successfully handling various cases from Philadelphia VIP. He has been recognized by the court for his service and was a featured volunteer by Philadelphia VIP. As an animal lover and dog owner, Jordan has also championed animal rights causes, helping establish that pets should not be viewed as property under the law. He also serves on the Pennsylvania Association for Justice Board of Directors and has previously served on boards for non-profits that help animals, homeless people, and refugees. Jordan is the former co-chair of the State Civil Litigation Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association and was proud to help implement town halls at the start of the pandemic, which allowed the court and legal community to communicate during those uncertain times. He now co-chairs both the Civil Rules and Wellness Committees at the bar association. Jordan has served as an adjunct law school professor and occasionally speaks at seminars to other personal injury lawyers. He is also regularly asked by news outlets to provide legal commentary. Jordan graduated from Widener University Delaware Law School as Valedictorian of his class, where several of his professors would comment that his academic performance and mind for the law were among the most impressive they had ever seen. While in school, he interned with three Philadelphia judges: the Honorable M. Faith Angell (E.D. Pa), the Honorable Arnold L. New (Common Pleas), and the Honorable Paul P. Panepinto (Common Pleas) and used these internships as opportunities to get in the courtroom and watch many trials. He was also a member of the Law Review. After his commencement speech at graduation, the Governor of Delaware declared that he would never want to follow Jordan in speaking again. While practicing law full-time, Jordan obtained a Master of Law in Trial Advocacy at the nationally renowned Temple University Beasley School of Law LL.M. Program in the Spring of 2018, where he received special recognition from the faculty for his trial performances and was a jury favorite—earning the highest scores from the jury at his showcase trial. Greetings, dear listeners. I hope you had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving to start this holiday season. For me, it's always a great reminder to count one's blessings, not only seasonally but also having a dedicated gratitude practice. Now without further ado, I'd like to introduce my next guest, with whom I share a mission to optimize your health in order to maximize your wellbeing. As working moms, we are all too familiar with the need to be superhumans - raising kids, taking care of families, and managing professional careers. I had a fascinating conversation full of similarities with Stephanie Smith, PharmD, CHC, who coaches moms to prioritize their wellness by tuning into their own bodies, resting and refueling, and building endurance through exercise and movement. After obtaining her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Stephanie began working with Pfizer as a medical education consultant. As her clinical experience grew, she eventually moved into a more patient-centered practice at Mount Sinai Medical Center before assuming another teaching role in the Pharmacy Practice Residency at Temple University Hospital. During the near-decade at Temple, she provided direct patient care in the surgical/trauma critical care unit and worked as part of a multi-disciplinary team, as well as mentored/precepted pharmacy students and residents, and served as adjunct faculty for Temple. During this time Stephanie saw countless patients getting acutely better but struggling with multiple chronic diseases and the endless medication list that goes along with it. She began to truly understand the roles that diet and exercise play in the trajectory of health inside and outside of the hospital. Her own health began to change as well. It was through her own personal experiences with Crohn's Disease and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis that it became clear just how challenging it can be to live with chronic illness and more importantly, how rewarding it is to defeat them through healthy lifestyle choices and practices. As Stephanie's health grew, so too did her family, and she learned firsthand the obstacles that other women face as her role expanded to spouse and mother of two beautiful daughters. These new responsibilities forced her to reconcile and realign her identity and passions. She left clinical practice to pursue a career in health coaching and functional medicine. This was the change that ultimately gave rise to Master Her Health, her business that applies a background of traditional Western medicine and pharmacy to an integrative program incorporating natural diet, exercise, and rest techniques to build a community of healthy and strong moms across the country. Long story short, Stephanie transforms women from hungry, stressed, and tired to fit, confident, and healthy. Who doesn't need some of that? Many midlife women that I work with, and are friends with, fear getting breast cancer more than heart disease. The focus on cardiovascular health is often not listed on my client's health history form as an area of concern. Did you know that heart disease is the #1 cause of death for both women and men? Over 60M women in the U.S. live with some form of heart disease. While there are many unique risk factors for women developing heart disease, which we are going to cover in this episode, one of them is the menopausal transition. All women will experience menopause, and while some develop worse symptoms than others, the door to the 4 horsemen of chronic disease states opens up: Alzheimer's Disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.Navigating one's risk of heart disease is almost impossible to do in the conventional medical healthcare model, which is set up to help you after you've had a cardiac event, not prevent it from happening. The amount of information on the topic, specifically as it relates to midlife women, is next to silent. Women are struggling to have conversations with their doctors about menopause, let alone heart health. In doing research to prepare for this episode, I was challenged to find articles and podcasts related to midlife women and CVD risk, treatments, and lifestyle interventions. I found plenty in the scientific data, but my clients, who are non-medical midlife women, don't look there for the latest science. Most of my clients are also not having discussions about nutrition, sleep, stress management, and exercise with their doctors.I am honored to have a very special guest today, who is going to help all of us midlife women understand what our CVD risks are, what we can do to prevent heart disease, what labs and tests to ask for from our doctors, and how menopause and menopause hormone therapy play a role in increasing or decreasing our risk.Dr. Garima Sharma, MD received her Internal Medicine and Cardiology fellowship training at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia. She was faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. and has served on the American College of Cardiology Fellow in Training Committee, Early Career Professional Committee, and the Women in Cardiology Leadership Council. Dr Carlos Moreyra is a orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in sports medicine. He obtained his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. After years as a Navy flight surgeon and a civilian clinical research consultant, he completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago. After fellowship, he voluntarily returned to active duty in the Navy for an additional 4 years, including a 7-month deployment to the US Navy-operated Role 3 Combat Hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Since transitioning back to the Navy Reserve, he has worked as a general orthopaedic surgeon in various areas around the country. He is now a Retired Reservist in the US Navy and is currently working long-term travel orthopaedic assignments in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Dr Moreyra has worked for three of the last five years in areas in the US with critical need of orthopaedic surgery services. During that time he realized that the vast majority of conditions he treats are preventible. He often discusses dietary and lifestyle changes in order to address chronic health issues that are not orthopedic in nature but that have orthopedic implications. Although individual dietary recommendations may be tailored for each patient, he generally recommends a wholesome animal-centered diet withe the elimination of sugar, refined carbohydrates, and vegetable seed oils. Where necessary, he would advocate for a carnivore elimination diet for the patient to learn what dietary aspect may be causing inflammation or pain. His treatment goals are to improve the musculoskeletal and overall health and longevity of his patients by advocating for wholesome food changes to patients diets as well as encouraging a more active lifestyle. According to the Mind over Money survey by Capital One and The Decision Lab, 77% of Americans report feeling anxious about their financial situation. If you are in this group, you need to listen to this episode. Do you know where your money goes or do you have an adviser managing it for you? If you feel stuck when it comes to your money then this episode is for you. I am excited to chat with Dr. Wagner about all things money, especially about physicians and their money. Dr. Wagner is a hand surgeon and a self-described Money Nerd. She used to be a Money Ostrich, and kept her head in the sand about all things money, until one day her interest was piqued by a stock trading webinar, of all things! She was drawn to learn more about stocks, investing, and ultimately all things Personal Finance. As she discovered how investing really worked, she took a look at her own investments (set up by a financial adviser) and saw that they left a lot to be desired. So she took back the reins, invested her own money, and created a simple system for managing her personal finances, so that she could keep on top of everything in just 30 minutes a month. Now she teaches other physicians how to master their personal finances, and she's on a mission to help as many doctors reach financial wellness as possible! She graduated from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, completed a General Surgery residency at Temple University Hospital, a Plastic Surgery residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Hand and Microsurgery fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. In this episode we discuss robotic simple prostatectomy for men with urinary symptoms due to an enlarged prostate (BPH). In prior episodes, we have discussed several treatment options for BPH including medications and a variety of procedures. But what if the medications don't work and the prostate is just too big to qualify for minimally invasive surgical procedures? Fortunately, robotic simple prostatectomy has emerged as a potential option for men in this situation. But, how does this procedure work? What are the risks? How long is the recovery? And how successful is it in relieving urinary symptoms of BPH for the long haul. To help us answer these questions, we are fortunate to be joined by Dr. Daniel Eun. Dr. Eun is a professor of urology and director of the Robotic Urologic Surgery Clinical Fellowship Program at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. He is also the chief of robotic surgery and the director of minimally invasive robotic urologic oncology and reconstructive surgery at Temple University Hospital. Aside from performing over 1000 robotic surgical procedures, Dr Eun has also extensively published peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and video teaching guides and travels nationally and internationally as an invited lecturer to present research and to train robotic surgeons.

Opioid use and dependency increased during the pandemic. At least 9 million Americans suffer from SI joint pain, which can have a dramatic impact on a person's quality of life and ability to conduct simple, everyday tasks due to reduced mobility. Dr. Azeem is a pain management specialist practicing in Tampa, Florida who strives to provide long-term pain solutions independent of opioids. For patients experiencing SI joint pain where appropriate nonsurgical interventions have failed, Dr. Azeem trusts LinQ by PainTEQ for its safe approach and fast recovery time. A clinical study confirmed that LinQ significantly reduces opioid use in patients following their procedure. Dr. Azeem wants to share with the medical community the results his patients have experienced with LinQ in addition to providing insight on the basics of how the procedure stabilizes the SI joint using a posterior approach. Dr. Azeem completed his undergraduate education at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and graduated from medical school, earning his Doctor of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine. After that, he completed an internship at Medstar Harbor Hospital Center in Baltimore and a residency at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Washington, DC, where he was the chief resident. After filling a faculty position at Medstar Georgetown University as a musculoskeletal medicine specialist, he went on to complete an ACGME interventional pain fellowship at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, under the guidance of internationally renowned pain physician Dr. Frank J.E. Falco. Dr. Azeem served as a board member for the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and held the position of director of neuromodulation in a multidisciplinary pain practice in New Orleans before moving to Florida. He recently developed the first successful non-opioid based interventional pain clinic in the Sarasota, Florida, area. His background helped shape Dr. Azeem's approach to treating pain, and he includes both patients and their families in developing treatment plans so that everyone involved understands the origin of the patient's pain as well as their available treatment options. Currently, Dr. Azeem is an associate assistant professor in the pain/neurology department of the University of South Florida, and actively continues to conduct research and author peer-reviewed publications in addition to treating patients, President, Florida Society of Pain & Neuroscience, Chair of Strategic Development for State Society Engagement and Advocacy, American Society of Pain & Neuroscience and Board of Directors, Florida Prescription Drug Monitoring Foundation. #LinQ #PainTEQ #SingleSolution

Dr Meltzer has also founded a nonprofit called Rheumatology for All - a continuing medical education course aimed at increasing access to rheumatology care in resource poor areas. Obstacles are inevitable. Dr. Michele Meltzer knows this best, as she's built a career based on perseverance. And today, she empowers us to put our personal obstacles in perspective—and she shares strategies for tackling them head on. Dr. Meltzer believes that our journey begins when we define what success means to us. And then, to chase after it. Along the way, she urges us to listen open-mindedly to our patients, to create more inclusive environments in medicine, and to slow down and enjoy the journey. Because when we're able to relax—we find that we can get more done. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. You can overcome obstacles to get to where you want to go. I love your perseverance and how you encourage others to do the same. 2. Listen to patients. Hear their concerns and act on what they have said. Be proactive in learning their names and details about their lives. 3. Know what you want to do and go for it. Define what success looks like for you.
