Welcome back friends! In this episode we check in briefly with the women who fled the farm near Ebou Dar as it was attacked by the Seanchan. When everyone is healed and rested up, the party of Aes Sedai, Kin, Seafolk and other hangers on make their way to CaemlynWe then jump to Rand who has undertaken a massive task. He's planning on rooting out the Seanchan from the mountains between Ebou Dar and Illian, and he's doing it with a handful of soldiers, nobles plotting against him and around 50 half mad Asha'man. And things seem to be going well! For now. We're over half way through the season as we discuss The Wheel of Time Episode 5 "Blood Calls Blood" this week in full spoiler filled detail. The Wheel of Time Episode 5 "Dragon Reborn" Synopsis and Details Based on the book series The Wheel of Time created by Robert Jordan Showrunner: Rafe Lee Judkins Episode Directed by: Salli Richardson-Whitfield Episode Written by: Celine Song Story Editors: Michael Clarkson and Paul Clarkson Staff writer Celine Song All roads lead to Tar Valon as our heroes begin to converge on the White Tower. With a month passed since Logain's forces attacked the Aes Sedai camp, he enters Tar Valon as their prisoner to face judgement by the Amalind Seat. Moiraine, Lan and the other Aes Sedai and their Warders mourn the loss of their fallen brethren. But Stepin has taken the death of his Aes Sedai, Kerene, hard and his grief knows no bounds. While Lan attempts to comfort him, it all becomes too much for Stepin. As a glorious sunrise shimmers over Tar Valon the Warders and Aes Sedai must say goodbye to another of their ranks as Stepin releases himself of his grief and loss. Rand and Mat, having escaped the Fade, also make it to Tar Valon where they treat themselves to comfy beds at a busy tavern. But Mat has become more and more withdrawn and tetchy, and Rand gets increasingly concerned that he has brought his friend to great danger in Tar Valon, the stronghold of Aes Sedai power, as he realises that his friend could truly be a male channeler or Saidin of the True Source, as warned by Thom. But as Mat is tormented all day and all night of visions from the farmstead, Rand meets Loail, a Ogier, in the tavern library. Looking to help Rand, Loail brings a familiar Wisdom to see Mat as the two are reunited with Nynaeve. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of Tar Valon, Egwene and Perrin run into and are captured by a familiar face, the Questioner Child Valdor of the Whitecloaks. Believing Egwene and Perrin to be an Aes Sedai and her Warder, he coldly and clinically interrogates the two companions forcing an ultimatum on the two of them. Either Egwene confesses to channelling the One Power and will be killed, if not Perrin will be killed. With Wolves howling nearby in the woods, Valdor tortures Perrin and his eyes become a brilliant golden yellow. With the White cloak distracted Egwene attempts to use her limited control of the One Power to no effect. But as Valdor ominously approaches Egwene to take her hands, wolves start to attack the White cloak encampment and Perrin finds the strength to break his bonds and stand up to Valdor. In the ensuing chaos Egwene and Perrin escape their captivity protected by the wolves and Valdor lies stabbed in his tent. The Last Days of Loneliness is a locally produced film, avant garde in intention and profound in result. It is a collaboration between filmmaker Saidin Salkic and the incomparable John Flaus. This is a conversation I had with Saidin and John. A particularly enjoyable experience I must say given our present lock down. Enjoy.
I hope you like The Stone of Tear, because we're still here. Much to the frustration of Moiraine. The girls are having no luck squeezing information out of the captured Black Ajah sisters. And Moiraine is having no luck pushing Rand into action. Elayne is trying to process her feelings for Rand, so after she and Egwene take a crack at learning something about Saidin and Saidar and their differences, Elayne hangs back and declares her feelings for Rand. Sort of.Speaking of hanging, Rand is starting to consider it as a suitable treatment for the High Lords of Tear. Can't say I disagree. Then all hell breaks loose when Lanfear shows up and Rand's hand is forced to make a decision about what happens next. Exciting stuff indeed! We also reference two episodes of The Podcast of the Dragon. They are Episode 25: The Power of Nope and Episode 26: Thus Do We Sing the Beginning. Psychologists are turning away as many as 60 clients a month because they have no space to see them. They say the situation is heartbreaking and they worry about what is happening to those they can not help.Porirua and Wellington clinical psychologist Annie Talbot feared the lack of care in the community would lead to a tsunami of serious mental health problems."It is a daily occurrence of having to turn people away and me having to actually say 'I don't think I can run a wait list anymore' because I don't know when I am going to finish up with clients or when I'll have capacity," she said.Nelson psychologist Kris Garstang said demand was at an all-time high as the stigma about seeking help for mental health problems fell away. She struggled to deal with all the emails, phone calls and texts from people so had a phone message saying she could not take more clients.Wellington psychologist Giselle Bahr turned away about 15 people a week and said her colleagues tried to help where they could but it was hard because everybody else was full. The private psychologists, who work in the community, mostly dealt with people who were not acutely unwell but could be dealing with conditions like anxiety or depression that could have a big impact on their lives and their families.Talbot said they were incredibly courageous and tended to put their best foot forward."But often it's at home, or those quiet places where no one can see, that things start to fall apart. If that's left too long without a proper scaffold or support around it, it can really lead to that serious or risky end," she said. The College of Clinical Psychologists discovered the issue after surveying its members.Executive advisor Paul Skirrow said he was shocked at how many were having to turn people away, and the situation was a barometer for the overall state of the mental health system."The private system always used to be the overflow from the public system, but now we're getting to the point where the overflow is overflowing," he said. The government promised an overhaul of the country's mental health system but very little concrete has changed.A few more training places had opened up for clinical psychologists but not nearly enough, especially considering a lot of people were keen to do the training, Skirrow said.Training more would be a major practical step to helping solve the problem, he said."It's going to take three years at least to training a psychologist from graduate level so we need to start right now," he said.Anyone struggling to get help should put themselves on a wait list, even if it was a long wait, to get help when it became available or to look for other practitioners on the College's website, he saidIn the meantime, they could seek support from their GP.Where to get help:If you are worried about your or someone else's mental health, the best place to get help is your GP or local mental health provider. However, if you or someone else is in danger or endangering others, call police immediately on 111.OR IF YOU NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE ELSE:LIFELINE:0800 543 354 or 09 5222 999 within Auckland (available 24/7)• SUICIDE CRISIS HELPLINE: 0508 828 865 (0508 TAUTOKO) (available 24/7)• YOUTHLINE: 0800 376 633 ,free text 234 or email talk@youthline.co.nz or online chat.• NEED TO TALK? The presence of saidin and men who can channel in the Wheel of Time series is...complicated. Moving along in the 101 series and going into depth on the male half of the One Power. We feel like it’s time to give some of our focus to saidin along with the consequences and condemnation that followed the men who had the ability to wield its awesome power. Everything up to the break is spoiler free and then we dive into spoilers, theories and all the other bits of WoT things that float through our conversation. One of the Many bits of Lore in the WoT Universe we all find ourselves woven into is the One Power. Not to be confused with the True Power which is the power of the Dark One, the One power is the force that turns the Wheel of Time itself, the wheel that weaves the very Pattern of the Ages. While we learn a great many things about the one power over time, one thing is still shrouded in mystery and speculation: objects of the power. Specifically, Angreal and Sa’Angreal. We know what they do, we know why they are used, and we know they are uncommon; almost legendary in their scarcity even. But we know next to nothing of their origins, or their production. Thanks to the speculative minds of our WoT Spoilers discord members, a very in-depth and feasible theory has been compiled. In Book 14, Rand Al’thor, The Dragon Reborn, is making his final arrangements, as he is prepared to die for the salvation of his people. Before he goes, however, He bestows Parting Gifts on those he cares for the most. Amongst them, and the most relevant to this topic, is the Ter’angreal he Presents to Elayne Trakand. He explains that he has learned that she has a Talent and a passion for Ter’angreal. He then goes on to bestow knowledge from the Age of Legends upon her, explaining in the briefest of ways, how Angreal were once made in the Age of legends. The Ter’angreal he gave her, he named a Seed. He said that the Seed was channeled through to make angreal. And that is all we have as in-text-cannon. It has been decided -through much debate and inference- that while the Seed is needed to produce an Angreal or Sa’angreal, it does not become the (Sa’)Angreal itself. Rather, A chosen item is selected to be the (Sa’)Angreal itself. Elayne an Aviendha seemed to feel like some of the Angreal they found had a feeling of being sentimental or personal in some way. They even speculate that in the Age of Legends, when the making of such items was not a mystery, it wouldn’t be surprising to find that they were made specifically for a certain person as either a gift, a memento, or as a commissioned piece. The material and size of the object to be transformed seems not to matter, as we see a wide variety of items that have become (Sa’)Angreal throughout the series, with size never being a consistent indicator for the overall Strength of the (Sa’)Angreal. Amongst them jewelry, Ivory carvings, amber brooches, and carvings and statuettes of various other materials. It is to be inferred that he process that is undertaken to create (Sa’)Angreal changes the composition of the item, Making them stronger and more damage resistant, without changing the appearance. This seems to only be a rule for (Sa’)Angreal, as some Ter’angreal are changed from their original appearance after being completed. (Such as the Stone Ring Dream Weaver Elayne tries to recreate.) An Important thing to know about Angreal and Sa’angreal is that they are specifically attuned to one half of the One power, either the male half (Saidin), or female half (Saidar). One attuned to Saidin, will do nothing for a woman and vice versa. But that tidbit begs the question of how that attunement is determined. After some speculation and reasoning it has been reasoned that the half of the One Power being used in the process of manufacturing the Angreal or Sa’Angreal determines the attunement. If it is Saidin being fed through the Seed, the (Sa’)Angreal will be attuned to men, if Saidar, women. With materials and attunement now explained and determined, It is important to discuss the Actual making of the (Sa’)Angreal. It has been determined that the Seed acts as a Conduit or a middle-man in the process. A channeler, male or female will channel the Power into the Seed. The seed will then take the Power being fed into it and amplify it, before allowing it to be sent into the object that has been chosen to become the (Sa’)Angreal. This process is very draining on those who undertake it. It requires long durations of channeling at ones capacity and dumping their very strength into the Seed. Once the Seed has collected enough Power and strength from the Channeler, it will begin to emit flows of the Power that the channeler has to direct into the object that will be the (Sa’)Angreal. This adds to the difficulty, as the channeler is now pouring their raw Power and Strength into the Seed, while directing the flows coming from the Seed into the (Sa’)Angreal-to-be. Once the Channeler has poured their Power into the Seed until no more can be drawn from them, A final weave is placed on the Angreal that makes it safe to use. This weave creates a buffer that makes channeling with an (Sa’)Angreal safe to use from drawing in more of the One Power than a channeler can handle, even aided. The Production of Sa’Angreal is almost exactly the same. The difference being that a Circle is used rather than an independent Channeler. This allows Exponentially more power to be fed through the Seed and into the item that is to become the (Sa’)Angreal. When a Sa’angreal is made, the Attunement is determined by the one who leads the circle. If it is lead by a woman wielding Saidar, it will be attuned to Women, and if by a man wielding Saidin, then Men. As with the production of an Angreal by a single channeler, Once the Seed has drawn everything it can from the Circle, it will stop, and the Buffering Weave is then placed upon the Item, concluding the process. Whether making an Angreal or Sa’Angreal, the process leaves all those involved drained and exhausted, even to the point of being unable to channel for months. It does not permanently weaken those involved. There is no fear of having ones Maximum channeling capacity reduced by this process, only temporary exhaustion. If an angreal or Sa’Angreal is used in the production of another Angreal or Sa’angreal, it is believed that the (Sa’)Angreal in the process will be less effective than it was before, as the Seed will draw some of its Strength from it and transfer it to the new (Sa’)Angreal. There are other dangers beyond Exhaustion as well. It is believed that those involved can find them selves so drained that their bodies shut down on them, as in the case of those facing starvation. The complete depletion of energy can leave one on the brink of death, making eating and resting well immediately after the process and absolute necessity. These dangers and costs explain why even in the Age of Legends, (Sa’)Angreal were not common. Few would be willing to drain themselves so completely and render themselves essentially useless for so long with out good reason. As such, it is believed that they were only made when great prices were paid for them, or when great need presented itself.
Moiraine and Perrin have a conversation about the Wolfbrother Talent. She has almost no information for him, other than this Talent being strongly related to the World of Dreams. She reminds him that whatever he does, much of his future is likely laid out for him by the Pattern. Perrin goes to sleep, arrives in Tel'aran'rhiod, and there's a man there with him trapped in a nightmare. Perrin watches as the man is skinned alive. He will either wake up skinned, or be found that way, dead. He shifts and interrupts Lanfear at work in a basement somewhere. She shifts away, and Hopper arrives to shove him out of the dream, likely saving his life. Perrin wakes up horrified, covered in the blood of the unfortunate man from earlier. Rand hunts Darkhounds in the night. This is the first time we see him or anyone, use Balefire in the series. The Dark One's taint on Saidin is a powerful check on Rand. The wound in his side seems to break open whenever he's exposed to the taint, but he continues on, being driven eastward by the Darkhounds, toward Tear, the Stone, Callandor, and destiny. When does Rand start losing his mind? The madness creeps slowly. Rand and Perrin both fight against their destiny. Min predicts the Death of the Tinker woman, Leya. Perrin correctly predicts an attack on the camp, though he continues to ignore messages from the wolves, which are probably a warning. Rand and Moiraine argue over whether to wait or to go help the people fighting and dying in the name of the Dragon on Almoth Plain. Perrin follows Rand to a fissure in the mountain wall. Rand recites a portion of the Prophecies, and notes that he hasn't been marked with the Dragons yet. Rand knows he must face Ba'alzamon again. And as he speaks, he feels Saidin calling to him. He can't resist the urge to channel, and with a sad smile, causes in earthquake accidentally – a signal fire for those who are hunting them. Rand asks Perrin about his dreams, not knowing that Perrin is protected in a way Rand is not. Perrin goes back to the camp, and Rand stays behind. Kelsey and Aradia Host again for episodes 95 and 96. The party leaves Ingtar behind to redeem himself by delaying the Seanchan. He has Toh, and he settles it honorably. We talk about how lots of people had Mat grow on them. Post dagger Mat is much more lovable. Despite Ingtar's sacrifice, the party is slowly being surrounded. They discuss their options while they themselves now face death. It's Mat's idea to to blow the horn. No one objects. The sound it makes is as golden as the horn itself. Time Stops. A fog rises as the Whitecloaks begin their charge westward toward Falme, and the Seanchan march eastward toward the Whitecloak cavalry, with Rand and his party in between. Are the heroes horses heroes as well? After greeting Mat and the Dragon, Hawkwing tells Hurin that sometimes new heroes are added to their number. Who from this age might become join their ranks? Could Rand be one, or is the Dragon separate in each age? Lot's of interesting questions about the Horn of Valere, it's connection to the world of dreams, and whether or not Rand is always the dragon. We talk about some quotes from Robert Jordan about The Wheel of Time universe's cyclical timeline, and where his ideas for that came from. We also discuss the irony of Hawkwing leading the heroes against the armies of his own descendants. We spend some time on light and dark prophecy, on whether or not they're self fulfilling, and if they may sometimes be more trouble than they're worth. When Rand asks the heroes to help save Egwene, they laugh at him. Birgitte even points out that he's always having some trouble with a woman. When Rand battles Ishmael in the sky, he forces Saidin into his power-wrought blade. Is that Ba'alzamon is afraid of being struck and why he's eventually so badly injured by the wound Rand inflicts on him, and perhaps why the cloud of darkness enveloping Ishamael is said to scream when Rand strikes his opponent down. Hurin tells us a bit about the gossip in the servant's quarters. We talk about Rand’s creeping insanity, how that increasingly affects him as time goes on, and we speculate on when it begins. Hurin leads Rand and Loial to the stone enclosure that hides the Waygate. When Rand opens the gate to see if Hurin’s Talent works within the Ways, Machin Shin is there waiting for them, whispering Rand’s name. We talk more about how the interaction between Padan Fain and the Black Wind changed both. The Black Wind tries to escape the ways to attack Rand, but he manages to hold it back with Saidin while Loial closes the Gate. The party leaves Barthanes’ Manor, shortly before he’s assassinated. Who did it, and why? We chat about the X files and older sci-fi in the after show. WoTSpoilers is a twice weekly book-club, and you can join our conversations on Discord. Rand, Selene, Hurin and Loial see the Choedan Kal being unearthed. Being near it does something strange to Rand. We speculate on this strange resonance, whatever it is that happens to Rand here even frightens Lanfear. They finally arrive at a Cairhienin inn, called 'The Nine Rings” a definite head nod from Robert Jordan to Tolkien's 'nine rings of mortal men doomed to die'. We see Rand's first heron brand in this chapter. Don't panic! We'll go over this section of the Karaethon cycle for you. We talk about how time and distance work differently in the portal world, but Tel'aran'rhiod works the same no matter where you are, which is how Ishmael gets to Rand. Although, Rand 'wraps himself' in Saidin to escape. We speculate on when the timeline of this world diverged from Rand's, and what may have happened. Loial senses something strange and Treesings himself a weapon. Rand recognizes the song, it's in his blood after all. We talk about Ogier weapons, culture, and Talents a bit. Wheel of Time coloring book in the after show, and a few new Patrons to thank. Say hello to us and join the conversations on Twitter Facebook Instagram Discord
