Darcy and Darcy welcome back Westlands Water District's Assistant General Manager, Jose Gutierrez and for the first time, welcome Kitty Campbell, Supervisor of Resources. Westlands has been doing some innovative groundwater sustainability efforts and in this episode, Jose and Kitty talk about their Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Program. This program works with Westlands growers to use their existing wells and convert them to dual purpose, meaning they recharge the deep aquifer beneath Corcoran clay layer when surface water is available as well as pump when groundwater extraction is permitted. Growers receive groundwater credits for each acre foot of water they store. Westlands has nine of these wells located throughout the District and over 70 have been installed by growers. Darcy and Darcy discuss the benefits for Westlands, the growers, and possibly for Southern California agencies looking for places to park water. Join the conversation! To learn more about Westland's ASR program, visit https://wwd.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/asr-information.pdf. Allison Febbo, General Manager of Westlands Water District joins Darcy and Darcy this week for a long-awaited recharge, culture change, and water supply reliability (or is that unreliable water supply ?!) conversation. Allison has been in water for over two decades and served a wide variety of leadership roles however has only been at the helm of Westlands for about a year. In that short of time she has gotten Westland's Groundwater Sustainability Plan approved, forged new partnerships (Including an historical one with Metropolitan), and worked with growers to recharge almost 400,000-acre-feet. That's almost half the capacity of Diamond Valley Lake reservoir people! In this episode there's lots of great questions, interesting water conversation, and as usual, Darcy and Darcy learn new things. We hope you do too. Today's guest, Marli Brown, is a speaker, author, musician, and phycologist, called by God to teach about a life of serving Him. Marli and her husband travel and serve throughout the United States and on today's podcast, Marli shares about what may be "your" next steps of following God in your life. **** Kimberly Hobbs Welcome to Empowering Lives with Purpose. And I'm your host, Kimberly Hobbs. I'm the founder of Women World Leaders. Ladies, we are so happy that you have joined in today. Ladies men may be listening to everybody's welcome. But we are just glad you're here to empowering lives with purpose through women, world leaders. Today, I'd like to welcome our guest, Marli Brown from Michigan. Marli Brown Hi, so nice to be with all of you. I'm so grateful for this opportunity. Thank you, Kimberly. Kimberly Hobbs Oh, you're so welcome. And it's just been a pleasure getting to know you, Marli. And as she's come in two women were leaders to be a part of this ministry. We're so happy to have her and today we're gonna be talking about saved what now? And sometimes some of us are just stuck in life, right? We are. We know Jesus is our personal Lord and Savior. But what do we do with that? Where do we go from here. So today's conversation is going to be talking about that. And Marlene is going to share a little bit about her life as well. And what she has done as she found Jesus as her Savior. So we believe that we're here to inspire you and strengthen you and encourage you. So that's one of our purposes. But we know God's Word says that God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him. So there is a purpose for your life once you come to know Jesus as your Savior. That Scripture is found in Philippians 213. And God also says that were his masterpiece, were created a new in Christ Jesus to do the very good things that he planned for us long ago. So listeners, there is a plan over your life. God has a plan for each and every one of you. So as we start to share about saved what now just listen and just see if God promised your heart in any way. Just listening to what Marley has to share. I want to share a little bit about who she is first before we get started. Marley is a gifted speaker. She's an author and a musician with an a unique style of communication. She's a dynamic storyteller using humor and everyday situations to describe the love, mercy and grace of God. Marley grew up in Michigan. She earned a BA in psychology and was ordained with the ECA. Marly has been married for 34 years and serves with Randy her husband and a full time worship concert and speaking ministry. She has a book out called riding shotgun, which recounts her eight year journey of living on the road with her family in an RV. I'm sure she has a lot of stories about that to share Marli Brown You end up with some stories. Kimberly Hobbs Yes. So today we're going to talk about saved what now? And what does it take to claim Christianity everybody? Have you really thought about counting the costs as a teen Marley was saved and she knew Jesus, but she was not by any means a sold out Christ follower. So Marlee, can you go into sharing a little bit about your story? Marli Brown Well, sure, I grew up in a pastor's home. My dad was a pastor of Westlands churches. And, you know, I was told that I gave my life to Christ at five years old, I don't remember that. I'm sure they're not lying to me. But I certainly don't remember that was not a life changing situation for me. But I certainly grew, I was so blessed to grow up in a Christian home, where I was continually told about the love of Jesus, and my parents lived that out before me. And so growing up with a church, I remember April 4 1984, I was a sophomore in high school. And I, I just knew, I mean, either going to believe this and live this or forget it. I've got to do one thing or the other. And, and it really how I understand it. And I don't fully understand you, but I just think that that was the time that Jesus became a word of my life where I said, Okay, you've saved me, my sins forgiven. I understand that in my head. But now I want to experience you as my Lord. And what does that look like? What does that mean? How does my life change? And so it was 11:20pm. I remember going to my dad and saying, Hey, I need I need some help here. I need to, I need to take the next step. There's got to be something more. And so we just knelt together and I just you know I really told the Lord, I want a relationship with you. I want something more. And so that's, that was the pivotable, the pivotal turning point in my life where I think I met Him as Lord. Kimberly Hobbs Amen. Amen. Do we want more? Are we looking for more? Through our relationship with Jesus? I hope we are and that that's beautifully said you wanted more. And so you gave your life to Jesus. So what happened in the following years, Marley? How did that play out in your life? When you you did seek Him you followed after him? Talk about your college years a little bit. And when you met your husband, because we were sharing about that off screen before and I thought that was very interesting, what you shared about that? Marli Brown Yeah, well, you know, I certainly in the years to follow, didn't live a sinless life. I don't think any of us have. And it certainly was a a, you know, progress of learning how God wants us to say no to are flush and, and seek him and all things. But interesting, my parents when I was about 10 years old, encouraged me to pray for the man that I was going to marry. And you know, I talked about this in my book at 10. You don't want to sit next to a boy, let alone pray for him. And you know, you just thought that they were stinky and engrossing. And but they said, No, you trust us. And so I began praying for my husband at 10 years old. And I remember my first prayer for him was that he wouldn't stink, and he would be very good looking. That was the all encompassing prayer apparently Kuva laid at that time for the man that I was gonna marry. But it was this incredible springboard to learn how to communicate with the Lord about things that were gigantic in my life. And then things that were just so small and seemingly insignificant, but really weren't to the Lord. And so I really learned how to talk to God, like I'm talking to you, because I didn't know how to put it into church terms that I wanted for this man that I was going to marry. And I really wanted him to, like nice shoes. What do you do with that in church, you know, that was so important to me as a teenager. And so, um, did just talk to God about everything. And I remember getting serious about my prayers and saying, God, if he's a musician, help him to practice well and develop his craft. Give him a heart after you that he would use everything in his life and all of his giftings and his abilities for you. So I always tease Randy, my husband was trained as a classical pianist, and he's very, very gifted. They wanted him to be a concert pianist. And he said, No, I want to go into ministry. But he's obviously got that gifting. And so I've always teased him and said, Whatever you can do on the piano, it's because I've read for you. It's not all the years of practice, it's because I prayed for you. Um, so my, my senior year of high school, I decided to enroll at a nearby Bible College. And I really felt a pull towards ministry. And so I went to audition for the current PR traveling music team. And the current team had to be in that those auditions. And so I walked into this room with six other people and a prof sitting there. And I took one look around the room and I saw this guy sitting at the piano, and I knew that's him. That's the man I've been praying for, for the last, you know, eight years. And I just, I don't know. I mean, I obviously didn't tell him that for a long time, but I think God just melted our hearts together. And, and I prayed for him so much and talked about him so much that I just recognized him. And right Lord was gracious enough to point him out to me, you know, so, funny enough. I went home, my sister also attended the college, I went home and she was home for the weekend. And she said, how did your audition go? And I said, it went terribly. I sang horribly, I'm sure didn't make it. I said, But I met the band I'm gonna marry. And she said, at the school, you met the man, you're gonna marry what's his name? And I said, I have no clue what his name is. But he's a piano player, and he's gorgeous. And he was, he's tall. And she said, That's Randy Brown. That's my piano teacher said Honey, you don't have a shot. So when I was walking down the aisle, and my sister was my maid of honor of course, I looked at her and I gave her that sister. I told you so look. Kimberly Hobbs I'm sure that was a great moment for you. Victory Yeah, moment of victory. So Oh, yeah. So you shared with me that you did marry Brandi. And that was awesome. God brought the two of you together, you recognize him because he was everything you prayed for, right? That's why it's so important. Ladies Pray, pray, pray. God hears every prayer we pray, and he wants to give us the desires of our heart. And Marli Brown One of the most important decisions you're gonna make in your lifetime because it literally who you marry, who you yoke yourself to, you are becoming one with and it is right, critical that you choose someone who loves Jesus, like you or more than you, Kimberly Hobbs Amen. Amen. Good word. So you met Randy, you're in college, but both of you are not spiritually mature yet. And you end up getting married. So now ladies are probably thinking about their life and how they're relating to you a little bit, some, some may, some may not. But when you need to know where to begin, God does speak to us, ladies. He says it in His Word that seek His will. And all that you do, and he will show you which path to take. That's proverbs three, six. So So Marlene is going to tell us about the decisions that were made together as husband and wife to take you into serving Jesus FULL TIME wholeheartedly. Can you talk about that right now? A little bit? Marli Brown Yeah. You know, when Randy asked me to marry him, my first question to him was, you're not going to be a pastor, right? Because I don't want to marry a pastor. I broke up with guys because they said they wanted to be a pastor. So I was serious. I did not want to marry a pastor. I wanted to marry someone who wanted to be in full time ministry, but not pastoral ministry. And Randy assured me I am not called to the pulpit. I'm not called to pastor a flock, but I definitely am called to full time ministry. Great, we're on the same page. God can use us as a team, let's go forward. And we've been married about nine years. And he was on staff as a church at a church as a worship pastor and associate pastor really in charge of worship. And that was fine for me, because that was different. It wasn't pastoral in the pulpit. And he came to me and he said, I need to talk to you. He said, I, I really believe the Lord is calling me to be ordained as pastor. And I told him, I said, Hey, we had a deal. But I fully, fully agreed that God was leading us in that direction, because here's the thing, especially in ministry, when God leads one, he's got to lead the other, you've got to go to God to be in agreement or just doesn't work. And throughout our 35 years of ministry, to congregations all over the United States, we have seen so many pastoral couples, where one did not want to be in ministry, and it was tragic. It was just really tragic and hard. So I knew that God was calling him and we were on the same page. And so he was ordained and, and really served that local church for a while in that, you know, in a kind of a associate position, and, and it just worked really, really well. Kimberly Hobbs Right, right. But I know I know, you talked about that. Your husband wanting to be ordained, threw you for a loop because of what you had said before. I don't want to marry a pastor, I don't want to marry a pastor. But that was your wants, not necessarily the plans that God had for your life. Marli Brown The vision was so small, I'm sorry. My vision was so small of what ordination and what God's calling on our life looked like. It was just so small Kimberly? Kimberly Hobbs Yes, yes, and I can understand that, and I'm sure we can all relate to some of those, you know, we have small vision, because we want what we want. So we're not looking with those wide eyes of what is God one and He is all knowing, all powerful can do the impossible. So we're looking at of our little vision, right? spectacles and but we all want to be confident about our decisions and our choices. And that's important. And the Bible says that if you need wisdom, ask your generous God and he will give it to you and he will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, Be sure your faith is in God alone. Do not waver for a person with divided loyalty is unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed into the wind. That's James. One, five and six. So God can change your heart if you pray to Him in the right way that it's his will not yours. And that's what he did with you. I mean, it was a beautiful picture when you were thrown for that loop. And now you had to say, Okay, now what do I do with this? You know, because you did become one. And so how did? So how did God change that heart develop that partnership? Marli Brown Yeah, you know, um, this is a really simple, simple answer. But when you walk with Jesus, when you pursue him intimately, he'll change your heart in any area that needs to be changed when you're really open with him. And I think that he changed my heart through simply, day by day crying out to Him saying, I want to know you, I really want to know you. And so then he, he, you know, and when you're submitting yourself, what good father doesn't help you make a change, right? Of course, he's going to do that. So you know, and what also threw me for a loop was a several years later, the Lord asked me to be ordained, and that really threw me for a loop, not to be in pastoral ministry, but to have a covering. And boy, I had to just really wrestle through that. And, and it it was just a step of obedience for me to do that. And so we had this, this stirring inside of us. I remember laying in bed one night, and we were just both laying there thinking you could hear us thinking almost and, and I said to him, I said, set aside the mortgage, set aside debt, set aside, the kids the house responsibilities, what do you want to do? What do you want to do with your life? What do you want to do? And my husband hemmed and hawed and just, it was so hard for him to, to verbalize what he wanted to do. And I sat up and I looked at him, and I said, it's okay. There's no judgment, say what you want to do. And he said, Marley, I want to travel the country, and I want to sing in churches. I don't want to be in a concert ministry. And I said, Good, so do I. Oh, wow. That said, Okay, Lord, you have revealed your plan for us. Now, you've got to make it happen. And and that's walking with Jesus day by day. Kimberly Hobbs Amen, day by day. So I love the fact that the two of you humbled yourself before God. It was so humbling that moment, because you were together, you were talking, you the presence of God was there and you humbled yourself, he, ladies listening, He wants our surrender, He wants our surrender. It on ties god's hands to be free to work for us when we give Him our surrender. And at that moment, I love that you look to your husband, to ask him what what he wanted as that, you know, leader in your home, and God had already lined your hearts up together for it to work perfectly. So that's what God does. And, and don't be afraid to surrender your control. People to God's control, give him your first render, he says, Don't worry about these things, saying, What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows your needs. And I love that seek the kingdom of God above all else, live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 631 33. And as you were starting out in this ministry together, Marley with your husband, and worshipping and traveling and, you know, being in all these churches and leading people to the Lord. I mean, how amazing is that? He gives us the desires of our heart. He says he will give you everything you need. So Marly talk to the woman out there right now who's made her own plan. She has control of her life right now. But things aren't going her way. How does she trust God she saved but what now? It's not aligning with her plan. Something must be up. So can you talk to her right now? Marli Brown Yeah, that's such a good question. Because I think you go back to the verse that you just quoted, you said, it gives us the desires of our heart. I think we've misunderstood that verse to mean if I please the Lord who gives me what I want and what I think that verse really means. The closer I get to the Lord, he actually takes his desire and he places it in my heart, his desire for what he wants for me. So I think to the woman who is really struggling, I think you go back to that moment and you say God, when I gave If you my wife, I said, I'm going to lay my agenda down. I want what you want for me. And I asked you to place your plan, placed the desire of your heart in the mind, so that I'm actually desiring what you want, and then helped me know, they helped me to walk that out. Because we all know it's in the walking out of what God wants that man, that's where we grow, because there are challenges. And it's hard. And it was not easy in especially in those first years, little kids life, we just got turned all upside down. And there were not easy answers for anything. And our, our faith muscle was stretched. We thought the point of breaking in it wasn't God was with us the whole time. But it was also fun. And it was exciting and new. And so it was all of those things kind of mixed together. But the excitement of saying, God, what do you want for us? Now we want to do that. And to be so excited for that. You know, I remember when I was growing up, and I would pray and I would say, God, will you carve out a niche for me that I fit into, I want to I want to use my life to serve you. And I can't imagine myself sitting in an office desk. I can't imagine that. I'll do it if you want. But I just I feel that you've got something different for me. And wow, did God answer those prayers? Kimberly Hobbs Amen. Yeah. Amen. Wow, he did. And he started putting things into your heart, as you said, what now God, you know, I know you. But Randy knows you. You know, you were immature. But he brought you to that maturity through asking him what you're Marli Brown And the fighting. I remember the just that wrestling, I say fighting but it's more of a wrestling with yourself and with circumstances and situations. I remember. Our first year when we were in concert ministry was just one test after another. We were actually in Florida. And we had no money. And we had no concerts. And we believed God had called us to go on this tour and nothing worked out. Like was planned. Nothing worked out, like we thought it was going to and it was just difficult. It was hard. And we're looking at these two little kids thinking how are we going to feed you? And I remember going for a walk by myself and just crying out to the Lord. And I said, God, what if we've made a colossal mistake? And the Holy Spirit was so present? He said to me, Marley with me, what is the colossal mistake? That I can't redeem? Wow, that's Kimberly, it took this backpack of rocks off of my shoulders. And I went back to where we were staying with no clear answers. Circumstances hadn't changed. I had no more money in my pocket. I had no more concert scant scheduled. The same two little faces are looking at me. But it's... Kimberly Hobbs Those were a lot of what now? Moments, right? Marli Brown Yeah. But God reminded me what now I'm with you. That is his answer for everything. I'm with you. So I think when we give our lives to Christ, we have a choice. Are we truly going to become disciples, because the people that sat at Jesus feet and said, We want to be your disciple? And he said, Hold on. You go back and you read it. He says, You can't be a disciple without counting the cost. Nobody goes to war without counting the cost. Nobody builds a tower without you have to look around either. What is this going to cost me because Kimberly, salvation is completely free. But discipleship cost you EVERYTHING. Wow, you want to become a disciple. You have to give up everything. You have to give up your agenda. You have to give up the pain of your past, you have to lay that down because you are not going to be I am not going to be the kind of minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ that He wants me to be. If I am not willing to lay down the hurt, the pain, the betrayal, anything that was done to me anything that I've done my sin, gonna lay down my fear. I'm gonna lay down everything before him so that we're truly focused on his plan. That's what's next. God, what do you have for me? I don't want you know, I think I think we talked about this. I love leaving people in a prayer of salvation. And I think it's crucial. There's a lot of controversy over that right now. I've heard different pastors speaking out about that. Oh, Um, that's how we talk to God. And when my husband asked me to marry him, I had to give a yes or no. He was waiting for an answer. And God is literally doing that. Will you be Botros? To me? He's, he's waiting for a yes or no. That's a prayer. But I think, what what God's really calling us to is relationship. I'm really quick, the the woman who was bleeding for 12 years, when Jesus, she gets healed. And then Jesus says, Who touched my role. And he basically calls her out, he could have let her go, it was an embarrassing situation than living a life of isolation, right? But he calls her out. And everybody was pressing around him, you know, and the disciples are probably thinking, who's not touching you, everybody's touching you. But it keeps He keeps looking around for. And she finally comes forward. And it says she was terrified and trembling. Because she's breaking Jewish law. She wasn't supposed to be out there. She's not supposed to touch anybody. But she risks everything. To touch the hem of His garment, that the son of righteousness as healing is wings, that word wings. When you look at the original translation, that means the hand of a garment. She's waiting for the sun of righteousness. And she finds him and she crawls through the crowd and she grabs his garment, and she gets healed. And then you think Jesus is so compassionate? Why didn't he just let her go? Why call her out in front of people? Kimberly, I have, I have thought on that for a long time. And I really think it's a couple of things. Most importantly, I think it's because Jesus is so much more about the relationship than he is the miracle. I think Jesus wanted to look in her eyes. And I think he wanted to meet that woman, so that she didn't just grab her miracle and run. I think he wanted her to meet him, and he wanted to meet her. And I think he wanted this relationship thing to happen. That's what we're doing. When we're giving Christ we're saying yes, not, not only to are my sins are all forgiven, and now I get to go to heaven. That's phenomenal. But we're saying yes to I get a relationship with you. Day in and day out. I'm walking with you on a Tuesday afternoon, when I can't pay the bills. Or when I get that terrible phone call. I fall to my knees and I begin to worship because you're my everything. You're my rock, and you're going to do life with me. Kimberly Hobbs Amen. I believe that's our what now. And I love how you said it Marley that we we become betrothed to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. That's the what now is that we are connected so deeply, so strongly. And as God says in His Word, we take up our cross and we follow Him. We let everything behind we are betrothed to Jesus now. And that is our what now and, and God is going to take care of you ladies, he's going to take care of you in your surrender to serve him over yourself. It's all about the surrender. And he's Word says, Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessings, you guard all things that everything that is mine, Psalm 16, five, and he's got it all taken care of. So what now we serve Him. We give Him our all, and he'll guard all that as yours. He said it. So let go and let God and just remember that scriptures. Psalm 16. Five, it's so so very important. So we have to close unfortunately, but I just want to ask you, Marley really quick. You talked about the or I talked about the book you had out shotgun and you think you referred to it as well. Can you tell the ladies how they may find you or get a copy of shotgun when you were riding in that RV all those years serving Jesus? Marli Brown Yeah, I wrote the book because I literally wrote in the passenger seat for eight years, and I get very carsick and I could not drive a rig that big. And so I sat in the passenger seat and rode for eight years. And so it's really my count up how God convinced me to ride with him on that journey. I'm your host, Yucca, Mark: and I'm the other one. Mark. And today we are talking about invented holidays and we're talking about adapting the Wheel of the year to really fit your needs and your climate and what's going on in your practice. Mark: Right, because one of the things that we do in Athe paganism, or generally in naturalistic paganism, is we. We focus on what's happening in our immediate surroundings naturally, rather than try to follow a calendar that's based on the climate of the uk, for example. Mm-hmm. , which is the more traditional wicked approach. What we do is say, okay, well what is happening in nature around us at the beginning of February? You know what? What creatures are around? What's happening in the soil, what's happening in the sky? What, what part of the life cycle is happening at this particular moment, and how can we best celebrate that? And that can be everything from the rituals that we do to what we actually name the holiday. Yucca: Right? And I would imagine for folks who live in a more urban environ, , they might bring in other things as well as, as the, their year is changing in different ways that isn't just about the soil or the animals, but what's happening within the city itself. So it's, you know, sure. Whatever your particular life is and what's really meaningful within your life. Mark: Right, right. For example, I could see if you live in a city the beginning of August holiday being something that was real would really focus around culture. It's hot out. Mm-hmm. , you may not want to be actually outside doing stuff cuz it's hot Yep. You may wanna be in museums or art galleries or music halls or. You know, or going to the ballet or the opera or the symphony or a punk club or whatever. Yucca: Or evening time activities. Mark: Yes. Yeah. Yes. All of that. That actually fits pretty well in with my concept of that holiday, which is sort of a celebration of both work and the achievements of humanity. So technology science, those kinds of things. But, we'll, we'll, we'll get to talking about that. The point is that if you're in a city, you know it. Some of the holidays may be more about the achievements of humanity rather than what's happening in nature. Mm-hmm. in your immediate area. Or Yucca: another way to approach that would be recognizing that the activities of humans I is an aspect of nature as Mark: well. Okay. That's a better way to put it. Yeah. Right. Yeah, for sure. Because we are natural creatures, right. We're. Quadra Pitt animals just like other Quadra Pitt animals on the planet. We just happen to have these large four brains and thumbs mm-hmm. and they lead us to do a lot of very creative things. Yucca: Yeah. And that's, you know, that's one of our special things about our species, so and so, and those things that we do. That too is is nature, right? Mark: Absolutely. So there ain't nothing That ain't Nature . Yep. Well, Lisa, that's what we Yucca: believe. That's, yep. I mean that's a, that's pretty foundational for us. So, now in addition to the Wheel of the Year, though, there sometimes are places in. Our seasons and our lives where it seems like, like a holiday or a celebration recognition. Seems very appropriate. And so that's one of the reasons we wanted to talk about this today is Mark, you have one coming up, which you've mentioned before. That is just such a delightful idea. ? Mark: Yes. Next Saturday, the third Saturday in January is when I celebrate Slog. S L O G G. All capitals. Mm-hmm. . It's not an acronym, it doesn't stand for anything. It's just I guess it's all capitals because it's this sort of repudiation of of what's happening in the, in the weather around us. By the, by the end of January it is, it's been cold and still quite dark and wet in most places. For a while. Mm-hmm. and all of the festivities of the December holidays are well behind us, and we're back at work or back at school, and it can just get to be kind of a drag. And so I invented this holiday slog because we're slogging through the dark and wet and so forth, . As a way of having a festive celebration at that time of the year. Mm-hmm. . And I mean, it, it, it just sort of struck me as a, as a sort of whimsical idea to start with. But I've been celebrating it now for five years and it's become a part of my seasonal routine. And slog is the, it's the winter, the deep winter, Demi sabba. So it's not quite all the way to the Sabbath at the beginning of February. But it's still deep winter and it's time to. Kind of come inside and do cozy things. Mm-hmm. . So it's a time when we wear festival, silly hats, , and we drink warm, cozy beverages like mold, wine or hot cider or even hot cocoa. Any of those things. Alcoholic or not. Mm-hmm. . Where your, your warmest, thickest pair of socks and Stay inside and play board games and just celebrate with other people. Mm-hmm. , have, have a little community and a little festivity. In a very relaxed, you know, wear your pajamas. It's . It's, it's the kind of thing where you shouldn't have to make any real effort in order to accomplish this. All you have to do is get together, pull on a good pair of socks, stick on a funny hat, and you know, heat yourself up some mold, wine at, at the stove, and you're there. You're, you're done. Yucca: What are those blankets that you can wear called, They're like onesies. Well, it's like a onesie, but it's like basically like a big sleeping bag, but you got arms like a Snuggie or so, anyways, whatever they're called. Oh, that must be, yeah, those, those sound perfect for slog, right? Just get that nice snuggie blanket on and Mark: Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. And And particularly the idea here is to, especially for people that are suffering from seasonal affect disorder, because this time right around now can be the very worst for people that become depressed seasonally. And that social interaction and that warm cozy feeling and sort of, you know, creating a warm nest away from. The cold of the outdoors. Mm-hmm. , becomes really important I think. And so, you know, drawing our our isolated friends out from their houses, people that, you know, are struggling with the season because, you know, a lot of people do mm-hmm. , Yucca: Especially the, the farther north you are. Yes. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, right? Yes. That it really, you know, we forget how far north some of our some of our cities are, but when you actually look at it in a globe, you go, wow, you're not getting much light, are you? Yeah, Mark: we're, we're pretty far up there. One of the things that I learned that really shocked me when I lived in Spain Yeah. Is that Madrid, and New York City are on the same parallel. It's wild. Yucca: Yeah, it Mark: is completely wild that those two cities are on the same parallel. Yeah. What that means is that Western Europe is very far north, way far north, equivalent to Newfoundland and on up into the Northwest Territories, you know, far, far, far up into Canada. There's a, there's a YouTuber that I love named Yana Yin. Mm-hmm. , who she lives in northern Sweden, in, in, you know, in adjacent to a forest. And she's an artist and does stuff, but she's also a YouTuber that, that does these wonderful seasonal. Celebrations of what her life is like at different times of the year. And I remember there's one which was in the deep of the winter and they finally had a day that was clear and it's just her sitting in the sun. And she said, you know the, when the moment when the winter sun first hits your face, it's like, it's like if you're really thirsty and you have that first sip of water, That's how powerful it is for folks that live that far north because they're so deprived. And this is after taking vitamin D tablets and Right. You know, you know, having full spectrum indoor lights and all that kind of stuff. And still there's nothing like the actual sun to Yeah. To stimulate that, that feeling in the body and. You know, long way of saying it, but Slog is about taking care of ourselves in that time. Mm-hmm. and doing it unapologetically, you know, and in a way that's a little silly. Mm-hmm. . So, it's, it's an opportunity for us to be playful and to kind of pull ourselves out of the muck of. Of the kind of climate conditions that can be happening at the third week in January. You can do the same thing in the Southern Hemisphere in the third week of July. It's, you know, exactly the same kind of principle. You can just plug it in at a different time of year. Yucca: Right. Well, or something else within your own environment. Right. That might, you know, for us, we don't have. That wetness, right? That what you're describing, the slog, it's for us, this is our cold. This certainly is our coldest month of the year. It's very bitter. But it doesn't have quite that same kind of slogging through. At least for me, I have this kind of, there's this quiet stillness to this part of the year still. Mm-hmm. right? Uhhuh. and I, but I suspect that a lot of that is simply because the climate. Are so different. Right? There's such sure, you know, we're so dry here. And I know you do get Dr. Quite dry very brittle in your summers. Yes. But your winters are, are quite different. Right. Yes. Mark: So there when, when we have a normal winter, we're, we're actually having a very wet winter this year. Mm-hmm. , we have a, a long series of these so-called atmospheric river storms. Mm-hmm. that are these giant conveyor belts of moisture from the tropics that whirl up into and up against the west coast of North America. . We've had six of them so far, and we expect four more over the next 10 days. So just wave after wave after wave of pelting, rain and then snow at the higher elevations. And this is more of what I remember from when I first moved here, God, 40 years ago. Longer. Mm-hmm. , Was that the winters January and February were consistently very, very wet. Mm-hmm. and we would have flooding every few years and it was just a really wet time. Yeah. And then we started having droughts and mm-hmm. it's been kind of on and off with drought ever. Yucca: When you describe your winters and you describe slog, the image that pops into my mind and the sound is, is having those, those big rubber boots on. Some people call 'em wellies. Yes. Squishing through the mud. You're just squish, squish through the mud until you get to the warm house and you can kick your boots off and put your nice blur fuzzy socks on. Mark: Right, right. Yeah. And, and even, even sort of, Walking through ankle deep water in a pair of wellies, right? Yeah. I mean, the wellies will keep the water out, you know, Yucca: but you gotta work twice as hard to get those feet up. Yeah, that's right. Mark: Yeah. And you, and by the time you get home, you're well ready to be in a place that's warm and isn't raining on you and. And where you can enjoy a hot drink and put on a funny hat. . Yeah, . Yucca: So we have a, a holiday that that my kiddos made up last year and they're very excited about doing it this year as well. So it's, it's probably gonna end up being a tradition for us. We'll see. But they made up snake. Snake day. Snake day. Yes. And where we live there are a lot of snakes and we do have rattlesnakes. So it's, and since they're so little, it is a big deal to really be very vigilant about that. Because you really don't want, you, you don't wanna be. In any situation, you don't wanna be bit by a rattlesnake. My mother was actually, she had this scar from it and, you know, apparently had, was not a very pleasant experience, but with a child that can actually be very dangerous or with an animal. So, but we also love the snakes and there's, and we have both snakes and, and non venomous snakes as well. We really only have the one kind of just rattle snakes that you have to watch out for. But it's something that is, that is exciting because when the snakes are back, It's summer, right? It's kind of, we talk about their, there's not really four seasons here. There's eight seasons or two seasons as I see it. Oh, . There's, there's the warm and then there's the cold. But when the, the snakes come back, it's the warm. But the, the, that day moves because the day that the snakes come back is. Is different each year. Um mm-hmm. , and I can tell you after decades there's the different species will come out at different times, right? You'll see the little fence lizards and things out weeks before the snakes are back. But when the snakes are back, you see one, there's 10, right? There's 20. They're all, I think they actually d together. And they, they come out interesting at the same. Even though they're interesting solitary animals usually, right? But when they, when they hibernate, they're not. So their idea was we draw pictures and make little clay snakes and make all of these things in preparation in the coming weeks. And we're looking for them and looking for them. And then the first day that we spot the snakes is when we bring out all the snake celebration, the pictures that they've been drawing over the weeks and put them up. And they've actually been bugging me about when do we get to. Prepping for snake day. I'm going, it's, it's January . Hold on for a while. We're not there. But that's really meaningful for, for our climate, but also for our particular family because somebody who lives in one of the cities doesn't have to deal with that. Right. Because they, they don't have, they've gotten rid of the snakes in the city, so they don't, you go out outside of it and Yeah, you'll find them, but not in downtown. You know, Albuquerque or Yeah. Or Pueblo or any of those types of places, you're just not gonna find them. Mark: Well, but, but this, this brings up some, an interesting thing because what you're talking about really is the seasonal indicator. that that's the beginning of the warm, right? Yeah. That, that's the true warm, yeah. Yeah. When, when the, when the snakes are confident enough that it's gonna stay warm, so they won't get marooned out in the, and have it suddenly freeze. and kill them. Yeah. That's, that's a turning point in the year for you. And there are other turning points in the year in various kinds of climates that would make total sense as holidays like I know that in Canada, First snow is often celebrated as as a thing, right? Mm-hmm. the very first snow, well, here it is, winter is here, you know, officially. It's, you know, because we don't get snow unless, So, unless it's winter, so this is the time in the tropics I could see holidays, like the first day of monsoon rain. Mm-hmm. , or the first day of the, the heat that follows in the dry season after the monsoon rains are gone. Or Yucca: the return of a particular bird. Right. Right. When that, when all of those birds are coming back in some areas that have The cherry blossoms. Right. And some of their more temporary areas of the, the spring, it's like, oh, yep, it's, it's spring, you know, when the, they start to bloom. Mark: Right? Yeah. Yeah. It's a big deal in Japan. Yeah. And and in Washington DC . Mm-hmm. . Yeah. Cuz they have the Japanese cherry trees. Yeah. So that is a way mm-hmm. , that we can augment the eight holidays of the wheel of the year with meaningful and and frankly practical celebrations that, that add to our celebration of living around the course of the year. Right. Yucca: Both of the examples that we gave each from our own environments, they really have that practical, yours is about, or at least part in, about the keeping the connection with the friends and, and, and looking out for your loved ones and neighbors and that, and getting through that time period. For us, there's a, a safety element of, okay, now we know we have to. more aware, like kids can't run off on their own. Like there's this, it's, there's the practical part, but we add that extra like kind of special meaning to it on top as well. Mm-hmm. , Mark: right? Yeah. So, I mean it doesn't all have to be practical. Some of it can just be celebration for the sake of it. Mm-hmm. Cuz you know, we're all about that. We think that's great. . But the, the I think the upshot here, the point here is that the cycle of your year doesn't all have to be about a, a calendar. Mm-hmm. , I mean, astronomy works on a calendar. We have a sun cycle, we have lunar cycles. Mm-hmm. , you know, those are predictable and we can put 'em on a piece of paper and then we can say, okay, day after tomorrow is when I'm celebrating the, the full moon. Mm-hmm. , that's great. And and it's a great thing to do, but it's not the only kind of holiday. Some of them are a movable feast, right? Mm-hmm. , some of them are. Or when it's just practical to, or, or when some indicator in nature in the world outside US says, okay it's, it's time to do this thing. Yucca: Yeah. Hmm. And then of course there's other ones like birthdays and death days and anniversaries and, and all of those. Mark: Yeah. Right. Yeah, because, and, and like, Yuri's night for example mm-hmm. , which is the anniversary of the first human going into space and orbiting the earth. Mm-hmm. , in April the April 12th, I think it is. I acknowledge it every year, but I never remember. Yucca: I'm pretty sure it's the 12th, maybe the 11th. I'm pretty sure it's 12th. 12th, so Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think it's the 12th and there's pie day, right? Mark: Pie three 14, and then there's TA day, which is 6.28, which is double pie day. Okay. Tau is is two pie. Yes. So Tu pi r is your circumference of mm-hmm. of a circle. Right. So, so Double pie Day is June 28th. Mm-hmm. . And you get two pies. So it's Yucca: okay. Mark: About Pirate day. Oh, go on. Yeah. September 19th, international talk, like a pirate day. We always celebrate it in our household . We have, we have P gear that we can put on and we can talk like we're From the Westlands in England, which actually has nothing to do with what Pirates talk like, but did have to do with what the actor who played Long John Silver in the original Hollywood production of Treasure Island sounded like. Mm-hmm. . And that's why everybody thinks Pirates talk that way now. . Yeah. So there you go. All right. Einstein's birthday, which happens also to be pie day 3.14. Mm-hmm. , celebrated by atheists A lot to celebrate science and critical thinking, and particularly a good one for atheopagan, I think because. Einstein rather, like Carl Sagan was of a philosophical mind. Mm-hmm. , he wasn't just a technician, he was also a thinker about, well, what does this all mean? ? Mm-hmm. , you know, where, where, you know, where did the universe come from and how does it work and what can we take away from that in terms of meaning for us as humans. And that is very much in line with our approach to the. Yeah. So why don't we talk a little bit about the, the formal wheel of the year the, the two equinoxes, two solstice, and then the four midpoints between those four stations. That was invented in the 1950s by Gerald Gardner and others. Mm-hmm. , many of these holidays have been celebrated traditionally for a very long time by various different cultures, but they haven't all been pulled together into a single map of eight holidays around the course of the year until the 1950s. Right. Which is one reason why in atheopagan we're comfortable drawing on it because it's not really cultural appropriation. It's something that was invented by a retired English civil servant in the 1950s. Mm-hmm. , that's, that's, that doesn't qualify as cultural appropriation. Yucca: Yeah. Well, I mean, I think that there's, there's more nuance to that discussion though, in terms of the choices that he made and how much of what he did was appropriating. I, I think that there's, I think there's more to be said about that and explored. But that today it is a very widespread approach and there's a strong. There's, there's a lot of logic to it, which is what I think makes it so appealing today. Yes, because those dates are built are based on real concrete. Things. Right. We're talking about the solstice. Right. That, I mean, humans have been doing, we talked about this a couple weeks ago, more than a couple, a few weeks ago with the solstice. We've been doing this for, we know, thousands and thousands of years at least. Mark: Right? Right. Yeah. These, the, the solstice is an equinoxes are astronomical facts. They're not cultural artifacts. Yeah. Yucca: They're the dates that we celebrate them. Yes. That's a little shaky there. Yeah. Yes, Mark: exactly. The, you know, if, if you celebrate your winter solstice holiday on December 25th, that's cultural. Mm-hmm. , because it doesn't actually happen then. Right? It happens on the 20th or 21st and that moment. Is simply an astronomical fact. And facts are available to everyone. Yeah. Yucca: Well, and also when it appears on a cal, like the Equinox, for instance or the solstice, if it happens at two in the morning at utc, when it gets so calendars, unless it says otherwise, they're always gonna give it basically in. Universal time. So you might actually be off technically by a day or two for what it is in your time zone when the, you know, but, but when we're talking about those, how important is being? Exactly the day onto you or can you be off by 12 hours or off by 15? Like each person has to decide that for themselves. I've set it an alarm cuz I think it's fun, , but, oh well. We actually celebrate kind of as, as close to the date that it is convenient to us. Mark: Right. That's, that's when I do my rituals. Mm-hmm. , as close to the date as is practical. And that's usually a weekend or something like that. Mm-hmm. . But on the actual, at the actual moment, I mean, I like to take a moment and go, oh wow. Okay. It's, it's the equinox, the, yeah. We're right at the point. Right at the point where we're crossing the ecliptic right now, which is we Yucca: set an alarm and go Woo and ray, shake our hands in this, in the air and then go back to what we're doing. Mark: Yeah. Uhhuh. . That's great. Perfect. But another thing that you can do is you can build traditions around the actual time and then, Do other traditions in the convenient time. Mm-hmm. . So just like you're, you're talking about my imagined celebration that I would love to do at some point in one of these events that is, It happens deep into the night. So like at two o'clock in the morning, you know, the, the solstice rolls around. What I would like to do is to do midnight margaritas, like in the movie Practical Magic I just think that would be a perfect thing. I, I just think that that would be a really fun thing to share with adults, obviously. I mean, you wouldn't do that with kids, but Yucca: Sure you would. I mean, depending on the kid's age, you might wake them up for the two. , you know, they can have the sparkling water or whatever it is that they particularly like, Mark: right? Yeah. Right. Yeah. So, that's, so that's basically how we approach the Wheel of the year. Do you want to talk a little bit about. Each of the holidays or how we Yucca: Oh yeah. Well, I think instead of, instead of going into each of them, because we, we do that throughout the year. We'll, pretty soon we have the February holiday coming up. We'll be talking about that. But I think what might be interesting to do is talk about how, so you and I are both established in our, in our places pretty well. But if we were to move. Our wheel. Wheel of the year would probably change the way it looked, because yes, if we were to suddenly go to another climate, then some of the things, some of the themes are gonna stay the same, but different things are happening in the different climate. So it, how would you approach an, let's say you moved to Miami. Right next week you got the Dream Job offer and you decided that you were gonna pick up everything and move to Miami. Wow. How would you start building your Wheel of the Year? Mark: Well, I think I would do it as we've talked before with a phenology journal. You know, I, I think I would have to start by doing a bunch of data collection about what's going on around me, because, you know, the, the South of Florida, that's the subtropics. Mm-hmm. and it's laden with insects, none of which I would be familiar. Way, way more insects than I'm really interested in , interested in contending with, but there they are. The insects are there. Yucca: Oh, there's some pretty amazing ones though. Mark: There there are. It's true. Yeah, it's true. There's Yucca: And it doesn't necessarily have to have to be Miami, but I would, you know, I was just picking something that seemed very different from where you are. I think Mark: that's a great example. Yeah. So, you know, being aware of. I mean, the sunrises and sunsets would be at radically different times there than they are where I am. I'm way farther north. Mm-hmm. than that. So the first thing would be gathering information about what's going on in the natural world and how those things cycle. And it might take me, you know, a year of gathering information before I started to make adjustments in. In my holidays I know that I know that for someone that I know who lives in Tampa there is a moment in September-ish when the temperature finally becomes tolerable. because it's so humid and so hot in the summertime that you don't really do outdoor things very much. Mm-hmm. , because it's just so hot and oppressive and so the time to go and do outdoor things is not in the summertime as it is where I am now. Mm-hmm. , it's, it's later on in the year simply because the conditions are, are different. Hmm. You know, when, when you get to the deep of winter and it's 70 degrees mm-hmm. That's just a very different kind of condition to, to set up. So I don't know. I would think that some of the things that I would probably end up celebrating might be, I mean, I might take on the carnival kind of, celebrations, you know, like Mardi Gra and so forth in. You know, the early wet parts of the year are still at a time when you don't collapse from heat exhaustion. Mm-hmm. , right? So it just, I don't know, but I would have to find out what it was like when I was there and then do my celebrations accordingly. Yucca: Mm-hmm. . It's a very similar approach that I would take, I think is just the really observing. And it would probably take a take some time because you don't know that what year is a typical year or not what you're experiencing. I mean, you can communicate with people who have been there longer and read and do all of that, but I think that I would probably still. Recognize the, the holidays as they came along, but would know that each year I was building onto them. Right. I might be thinking about the summer solstice more in terms of what's going on with Earth's orbit and just kind of keeping an eye out and an ear out for what's happening in my new ecosystem. Mm-hmm. and then incorporating a little bit more each year, kind of like. Like when you move to the new place, it would be like your first few years are you getting to grow up in that spot, even if you're an adult already, you, you know, your first few years you're kind of figuring out life just as a human. You move somewhere, you have a few years to figure out life in that new Mark: place, right? Yeah. That's, that. That's very similar to how I would approach it. I mean, I have a very mature. Cycle of celebrations now because I've been living in the same place for a long time and have been, you know, accumulating information and traditions around that for a long time. Mm-hmm. , and it would take a while if I moved somewhere else to, for that, that level of development to happen again. Mm-hmm. . Yeah. So. I guess where we're going with this for our listeners is first of all, to feel a lot of freedom around how you celebrate. You know, you do not have to celebrate the February holiday as in bulk, the time when we cast seeds out onto the snow. If you live in a place where there ain't no snow , Yucca: And or here, don't put any seed. Where I live. Do not put your seeds in the ground. They will die in the beginning of February. They won't work. Yeah. Mark: right? You do. Don't plant Yucca: until Mark: May. So . Yeah. So, you know, be aware of where you are and relate to that place. Initially I think. Well, okay. Nevermind. Let me, let me retract the beginning of that sentence, what Paganism has come to mean for many. Mm-hmm. is about a deep relationship with nature, right? I mean, the initial threads were things like free masonry and western ceremonial magic and, and a whole bunch of stuff that may not have had anything to do with that. But what modern paganism has come to mean for many of. Both naturalistic, paganism pagans and non naturalistic pagans is a deep relationship with reality, with, with the natural world. Mm-hmm. Earth based. In order to have that Yes, we're, we're earth's earth based. Yucca: Yeah. That's what the earth-based part means, right? Right. Yeah. Mark: So given. Once again, as we've talked about so many times, you know, the, the, the greatest pagan skill is simply to pay attention. Mm-hmm. , you know, to, to be connected with what's going on around you. And it's a, it's a hard skill to cultivate because in the routines of our life, we tend to just sort of skip over things and we may not notice that that tree now has leaves growing. it's been bare for months and, but now suddenly it has some leaves leafing out on it. Noticing when that happens, noticing that the buds were there before the leaves butted out. That's an important moment and it tells you something about what's happening with the season that's coming. So, feel latitude to adjust. Your wheel of the year to reflect what you're seeing around you, because ultimately what we're celebrating is life, right? Mm-hmm. , we're celebrating what's real, so we don't, we don't have to have a symbolic celebration about some other climate somewhere else that somebody experienced a long time ago and wrote down. Yucca: That's beautiful. We're accustomed, but that doesn't Yes. That's not necessarily your experience. Mark: Right? Right. Yeah. And we are, we are very accustomed in this culture because we are taught by the over culture to get our cult, to get our, our spiritual experiences prescribed by what's written down. in books, whether it's the Bible or the Talmud, or or you know, somebody's, you know, big book of witchcraft or whatever it is. And what we're seeing is you can get input from those kinds of themes, but ultimately the, the script of, of the nature path that's around you is written in nature. Right. And that's where you can, that's where you can find the deep wisdom about what living in your place is about. Mm-hmm. Yucca: Well, this was a good conversation. Thank you, mark. Mark: Yeah, yeah, you're welcome. And, and I hope that this, let me see this podcast will post. On the 16th and the following Saturday is slog . So if you find any appeal in the idea of suspending the dismal of winter, wherever you are for a while and having a celebration, feel free to take advantage of that holiday. And don't forget to wear a silly hat. Yucca: Right. And if you have rainbow toe socks, those sound great too. Mark: I need Yucca: some of those. They're, they're great. Then you can still pick things up with your toes. Fantastic. Ooh, . Alright, well we will see you all next week, so. Alright. Thanks everyone.

A tiny local election in the Central Valley caught our attention last month. A group of candidates promising change took over control of a big, farmer-run organization that delivers their irrigation water: Westlands Water District. It's an empire built on imported water and political power. But these newly elected Westlands board members – all farmers themselves – are now saying: We need a new strategy. A recognition that water is scarce, and large-scale farming will have to shrink. Reporter Dan Charles brings us this story as part of a collaboration with the Food and Environment Reporting Network. And we hear from author and disability rights activist Alice Wong, who's had a tough time trying to figure out how to get the care she needs to survive. Earlier this year, she was finishing the final edits to her memoir, “Year of the Tiger: An Activist's Life,” when she suffered several medical crises. She lost her ability to speak and started using a text to speech app, which you'll hear in her story. Plus, ever since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, California legislators have been passing bills aimed at providing abortion access for out-of-state patients. And last month, voters overwhelmingly agreed to enshrine the right to an abortion in our state's constitution. But in some rural communities in California – like Bishop, in the Eastern Sierra – access to abortion remains extremely limited. That's where Reporter Lauren DeLaunay Miller is from and she started hearing from women in her hometown about how hard it's been for them to figure out where to get an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy. And finally, California is home to so many immigrant communities who have their eyes glued to The FIFA World Cup in Qatar right now. One of those fans who's been rooting for his home country is KQED's Sebastian Miño-Bucheli.
A Bay Area member of Congress says federal immigration authorities plan to end their contract with a Northern California county jail, the last public facility in the state to hold immigrants fighting deportation. It comes after years of outcry over substandard conditions. Reporter: Tyche Hendricks, KQED A tiny local election in the Central Valley could have big ripple effects for farming, and water. The Westlands Water District produces crops like tomatoes, garlic, and almonds – and it's historically fought with environmentalists, who accuse the wealthy farmers there of hogging water. Westlands has just elected a slate of board members promising a new strategy - a recognition that large-scale farming will have to shrink. Cairhien, the birthplace of daes dae'mar, is given a more proper introduction, and we are given a taste of what we may expect as our journey takes Rand and the Horn of Valere toward the capital. Nyneave faces her fears in the White Tower, while Egwene, gets thrown for a loop when she meets not one, but two young women in the Tower wanting to know how Rand's doing. Thank you, thank you for joining us! Next week we will be doing our first Westlands 101 of 2022! We will be going through the history, people, and politics of Cairhien. With Derek lost in the Ways, John and Chris guide you through The Wheel of Time Episode 7 "The Dark Along The Ways" in full spoiler filled details. The Wheel of Time Episode 7 "The Dark Along The Ways" Synopsis and Details Based on the book series The Wheel of Time created by Robert Jordan Showrunner: Rafe Lee Judkins Episode Directed by: Ciaran Donnelly Episode Written by: Amanda Kate Shuman and Katherine B. McKenna Story Editors: Michael Clarkson and Paul Clarkson Staff writer Celine Song Long ago, on a snowy volcanic mountain a warrior Aiel defends herself against soldiers during the Battle of the Shining Wars as she attempts to give birth to her child. Killing the soldiers but mortally wounded an enemy soldier, named Tam Al'Thor, helps her deliver her new born son as she dies from her wounds. In the present Mat Cauthon is left behind as the group make their way through the Ways to Fal Dara, but they are not alone. The Ways have been corrupted and darkened by the Darkspawn who have used the ancient passages as a means of travelling through the world. At a vandalised Way guide, the group rest as Loial tries to decipher its directions to their destination, where they are attacked by a Trolloc. But the use of the One Power in the Ways unleashes the Black Wind or Machin Shin. As they race to make it to the Fal Dara Waygate they are enveloped by the Black Wind which speaks to them about their past, present and future. They escape the Machin Shin after Nyneave deploys her use of the One Power to hold it back and they make it to Fal Dara, an ancient fortress that defends the Westlands against the encroachment of the Blight and the forces of the Dark One. But after a drink at the local Inn, where Moiraine employs a gifted landlady, a Seer, to read the companions' weave, tensions begin to spill out between Rand, Nynaeve, Egwene and Perrin after Moiraine tells them she is unclear who among them is the Dragon Reborn and of the mortal danger they are in if they are not the Dragon. As they spend time with their own thoughts in Fal Dara, Nynaeve begins to get to know Lan's past staying the night with him, while Egwene and Rand make amends after their falling out over Mat and Perrin. The next day as the companions begin to assemble for their journey through the Blight to the Eye of the World two of their party are missing Moiraine and Rand. Earlier as the others slept and with the words of the Black Wind echoing in his head, Rand's memories and thoughts coalesce around those of his rescue of his wounded father at the Two Rivers, his escape from the Dark Friend in Breen's Spring and the attack in the Ways a single thought enters his mind, I am the Dragon Reborn. E 1 Westlands 101 Warders: Walking Death Warders are nearly as mysterious and feared as the Aes Sedai they are bonded to, and with good reason. In this episode we ask some crucial questions: what does a Warder get out of being bonded, how do Aes Sedai and Warders handle the trauma of a broken bond, and will Amber's idea for fan-cloth fashion cuts take off? First half of the show is spoiler free, second half is where the spoilers come out to play. Thanks for joining us! Short term stopgap to stave off the emotional trauma of a broken bond. The Gift, also known as The Ways, was a sincere form of gratitude from male Aes Sedai who had been invited by the Ogier to shelter in Steddings during the Time of Madness and the Breaking of the World. While the idea of fast travel for the Ogier who are attached to their Steddings was indeed a marvelous gift, centuries later it would become a place banned to all travelers, a death trap to those who attempted to use them anyway. This may be one of our nerdiest episodes yet, and a new surprising favorite. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did! This mythical artifact has been the catalyst for legend upon legend in the Wheel of Time series, shared by gleemen across the Westlands, but is it a legend based on fact or fantasy? Robert Jordan cleverly left hints of a more technologically advanced society that existed before the one we find in the series, making items that are science based seem like magic. SPOILER WARNING: In order to avoid any spoilers regarding our favorite gleeman, you should have read up to Chapter 26 in Eye of the World. Did you really think now that we are past Whitebridge we wouldn't have a few words to say about our beloved Thom? We dig into what it meant to be a gleeman in the Westlands and why Thom was so exceptional. As usual, the first half is spoiler free and the second half is more theories that lean on spoilers in the later series. The music at the beginning of the spoiler section was a fun little exercise in inspiration and the power of community. Thanks so much to James for giving us proper Thom tribute music. That’s right! It’s 101 time! Hopefully you are as excited as we are about taking a topic and pulling it apart for our mutual amusement and edification. This week we are focusing on some of the sentient creatures we have met in the Eye of the World as well as a couple that will be making their appearance by the end of Eye of the World. Our breakdown includes Myrddraal, Trollocs, Draghkar, Ogier (not to be confused with Trollocs), and the Nym. The first half follows our regular format; spoiler free first half and all the spoilers after the break. If you are able to join us into the spoiler section, we’ve included a mini 101 on two of our favorite, tricksy creatures that don’t make an appearance until later in the series. Tai’shar Manetheren! The true blood of Manetheren flows strong in the Two Rivers; but what does that mean? This week’s 101 is going to focus on the history of this great nation that formed after the Breaking of the World, as well as its crucial role in the series as a whole. The first half will be spoiler free for new readers, and after the break, proceed at your own risk! There will be spoilers! If you feel we glossed over Moiraine's mesmerizing tale of Manetheren in Eye of the World, it's only because we knew we would never be able to match the perfection of Recappa Sedai's Lego masterpiece retelling. Please, do yourself a favor, and go watch it if you haven't already. For anyone who may have missed it, we have a bone to pick with the White Tower, so next week we are putting it under a microscope and pulling out some of the main shortcomings of this centuries old institution. It’s not that we hate the White Tower, it’s just we think some of the things they do are...questionable. Join us if you’re down for a cynic’s guide to some of the unsavory antics of the Aes Sedai. Just a quick heads up, we did have a moment where a conversation started to take a bit of a spoilery turn in the first half and we found a...more creative way to “bleep” out what shouldn’t be heard. One word: sandwiches. We continue our exploration into the bare bones of the Wheel of Time series with another Westlands 101 episode and will be focused on ta’veren; what it is, who’s got it, and how it affects the plot line of the series. The first half will be spoiler free for new readers, and after the break, proceed at your own risk! There will be spoilers! Our conversation this week is enhanced with the insight and humor of Felicia James of Call Me Nakomi. If you want to check out the episode (and you do), Favorite Nyneave Moments, we kept mentioning, follow either one of these links to find it. We look forward to our next chance to work together. We do believe there do be a friendship here! Next week, we cover our first nation in the Westlands 101 series: Manetheren! We learned a lot about this nation and encourage anyone who may be looking for a little extra knowledge, or a refresher, to check out Recappa Sedai’s video, Cry Me Two Rivers. There are some characters in the WoT world who are written so well, you don’t realize what role they have played until the very end. This could indeed be said of today’s 101 subject, Verin Mathwin. Our first half is recorded spoiler free for our pals who are still in their early days of the series, while the second half is where we get to let loose and discuss Verin's role, and our appreciation of her, more deeply. If you have any particular feelings around Verin Sedai, we would love to hear them! Happy half-iversary to us! That's right! The Road to Tar Valon is six months old! Next week, Traci and Amber reflect a bit on what these months have been like, but then take time to celebrate this milestone with another one: Traci finally, after nearly three decades, finished the series. Our topic today was inspired by my dear friend Tim who has just started reading through the series for the first time. He’s been sending me a flurry of text messages as he races through the books with his ideas and theories and I have just loved it, but there was one in particular where I just was like “yes! That needs to be a topic for us!” and the message was this, “Boy. Them White Cloaks, eh?” Today, our 101 is dedicated to the Children of Light - converting to combat. Tim joins us for our spoiler free first half and takes his leave when Amber and I jump into full spoiler territory. There’s history, torture, favorite moments, and, as always, lots of laughs. Ah yes… Elaida “I am Tower law!” do Avriny a'Roihan. She is a very special character just because we can’t think of someone we love to hate any more than Elaida. This will be another Westlands 101 episode, so we will be keeping the first half of the episode as spoiler free as possible. There will be a few moments from Eye of the World, and New Spring included, but no major spoilers until after the break. Some of the best moments to come out of the WoT series are the battle scenes. We were incredibly lucky to be joined by the guys from the Black Tower Podcast to talk about our favorite battle scenes and we had a blast (pun intended?) discussing the epic showdowns as well as the plotlines that led us there. With this episode we prove our love and dedication to fully understanding this series by taking on a topic that, approached any other way, would make us glaze over like a batch of donuts, but our approach to the 101 series really felt like it would benefit from a deeper dive into the Prophecies of the Dragon. Everything up to the break is spoiler free and then we dive into spoilers, theories for the tv show and all the other bits of WoT things that float through our conversation. Next week, we continue our Westlands 101 series with a look at the role of saidin in the Wheel of Time. We’ve spoken quite a bit in past episodes about the use of saidar as well as the women who channel it, and now we feel like it’s time to give some of our focus to the male half of the true source along with the consequences and condemnation that followed the men who had the ability to wield its awesome power. WoT-A-Good-Time! Couldn’t resist. We also couldn’t resist a chance to promote a good cause...for the second time! We were able to grab the audio from our video segment during the WoT-A-Holiday fundraiser for The Lightweaver Foundation, the charity promoting literacy, filling up libraries and providing video games for those who benefit greatly from these services, that was started by Brandon Sanderson and his wife, Emily. Yep, that Brandon Sanderson. We were also given permission to use his audio giving more details into what the foundation is and how it does what it does. There were many spectacular people who put this together and participated in the content created for the fundraiser and we feel truly fortunate to belong to a group that cares so much about giving back. Thank you, everyone! Next week we are going to tackle our next topic in the Westlands 101 Series; The Prophecies of the Dragon. We would love to hear your opinion on the Prophecies. Do you love them? Hate them? Confused by them? All of the above? It’s safe to say we sit in all of the above categories and thought this would be a great opportunity to actually pay closer attention to the quagmire of prophecies in the series. We will begin with the Karaethon Cycle, as that is the most prevalent in the series, but we will focus a future episode on the rest of them at a later date. Feel free to drop your opinions to us on any of our social media sites. We love hearing from everyone! As always, thanks for joining us! This week we couldn’t resist the pull of Laras, Mistress of the Kitchens in the White Tower. We talk about her unknown history, do a little speculating, and fan casting in the first half, then push on to the nitty gritty details for our long time readers. With New Spring wrapped up we came up with the idea of launching a Westlands 101 series. So if you see a "101" in the title, we start each episode with a spoiler free first half for new readers then follow up with deeper discussions and theories in the second. We're going to go through a wide range of topics like characters, nations, and prophecies, to get reacquainted before the TV show starts. We are off next week for a holiday break, and after that we will tackle our next topic, "Prophecies of the Dragon". We would love to hear your opinion on the Prophecies. Do you love them? Hate them? Feel free to drop your opinions to us on any of our social media sites. As always, thanks for joining us! We did it again. As much as we try to be brief when chatting over these chapters we just get lost in the Wheel of Time world and end up talking for hours. We've trimmed it down, but there was just so much to still cover in those last four chapters that trimming this down too far felt a bit too challenging. That said, we talk about Black Ajah, the life-span issues of an Aes Sedai queen, the sad way the Tower handles failure, and many other things that span across the full series. We also had a really fun interaction around a question we posed on Twitter about who has read New Spring, why or why not, and we just had to share a handful of the replies we received. So much fun! We love every interaction we get to have with fellow WoT fans. Next week we are back to covering just two chapters at a time and we have arrived in the Borderlands with Lan and Bukama! These chapters were so beautifully written and so lively that it almost felt like reading a book from an entirely different series. There are some saucy bar maids and deadly fighting taking place, but what else would you expect from the most dangerous place to live in the Westlands? Make sure to join us! Let us know what you thought of our content, correct us, send us things we may have missed to our email: roadtotarvalon@gmail.com You can find Amber on Twitter @Road to Tar Valon and Traci @MistressLaras, or Laras, Mistress of the Kitchens. I have been renting office space in Westlands where my team works from. Since the pandemic started though, I asked everyone to work from home. I tried to negotiate with my landlord to waive rent until things picked up but he refused to listen. In fact, he sent me auctioneers and when I went to the office to meet them, they also took the car I was driving claiming that it would settle the arrears of K.Shs. 500,000 that we had. I don't mind settling the arrears but I bought this car for 1 million last year and it is practically still new. Is the auctioneer really allowed to sell my car at half price? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/swalanyeti/message

County Public Health Director Alice Harvey has been fielding almost nonstop questions since the new measures were released. We asked her about the best place to obtain information and recommendations. Here’s what she said. “Right now what we’re planning to do is continually keep the most recent public health orders posted right at the top at our website, the most recent one. So we’ve got a new tab that says ‘Reopening Guidelines.’ Underneath that is the graphic we created which matches that public health order, so for now, that’s going to be the simplest way for people to get that information. There’s another tab that says specific recommendations by sector so we will continually keep this live so that the most recent recommendations are on our website.” Read our story on PAGE 1A, and head over to rbc.us for real time updates on the public health orders and what they mean for you or your business.

Early Westlands chief test pilot and aviation historian Harald Penrose discusses some of the great figures he met during his career in the aircraft industry, including T. O. M. ‘Tommy’ Sopwith, Barnes Wallis and Sydney Camm. He also talks about Vickers test pilots E. R. C. ‘Tiny’ Scholefield and Joseph ‘Mutt’ Summers, together with their chief designer Rex Pierson, before going onto discuss working with test pilot Jeffrey Quill when Westlands built Supermarine Seafires and when he flew the prototype Supermarine Spitfire at Martlesham in 1936. Harald Penrose was interviewed by Rodney Giesler in 1983 and 1989 and the podcasts were edited by Mike Stanberry FRAeS.
Early Westlands chief test pilot and aviation historian Harald Penrose tells us his experiences of the very early days of test flying his career. He starts off talking about his early life and learning to fly, before telling us about test flying for Westlands between 1928 and 1953. Stories include accounts of high altitude flying in the Houston-Westland PV3 that was used to make the first flight over Mount Everest and his work on the tailless Westland Pterodactyl series designed by Captain G T. R. Hill. Penrose goes on to tell us the story of when he had to bail out of a Westland P7 after its wings came off, before moving onto discuss working with W. E. W. ‘Teddy’ Petter on the development of the Westland Whirlwind, as well as the Westland Welkin and Wyvern programmes and the English Electric Canberra. Harald Penrose was interviewed by Rodney Giesler in 1983 and 1989 and the podcasts were edited by Mike Stanberry FRAeS.

In his first podcast of "Tales of the Hydraulic Brotherhood" California water expert Lloyd Carter talks about the Westlands Water District, at 942 square miles the largest and most politically powerful federal water district in America. Westlands has a drainage problem caused by selenium, a trace element inherent in the soils of the western San Joaquin Valley in Central California, the nation's most productive farming region. Drainage water from Westlands poisoned ducks and shorebirds at the Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge in the mid 1980s triggering national headlines. Now Westlands wants to take over solving the drainage problem from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in exchange for forgiveness of a half billion dollar debt the water district owes the federal government AND control of the Bureau's state water permit which is annually worth $500 million.
